Richard Nixon and the NBA
The Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy
Awarded by the NBA to the winner of the NBA Finals
Yes, without Richard M. Nixon there would be no Larry O'Brien
NBA Championship Trophy (or Title IX).
How is this possible?
It was O'Brien's office which was the target of the Watergate burglars, as he had been elected Chairman of the Democratic Convention in 1970, and had received an office in a Washington D.C. hotel called "The Watergate." The investigation of the Watergate break-in eventually unraveled Nixon's presidency and forced him to become the only president in American history to resign the office.
Post-Watergate, O'Brien took the job vacated by Walter Kennedy as Commissioner of the NBA, a position he held from 1975 until 1984. During his tenure the league saw many changes, most notably
the merger with the American Basketball Association and the first major TV contract, hence the name of the trophy. So, as you watch one of the two equally unlikable teams, Dallas or Boston, claim the Larry O'Brien Trophy, remember old Tricky Dicky, who by modern day standards, would be considered a paragon of virtue.

Yuka Saso Wins the U.S. Women's Open
Yuka Saso of Japan won the U.S. Women's Open, with a "How to Putt under Pressure" demonstration. Hinako Shibuno, also of Japan, finished second, with Andrea Lee and Ally Ewing of the U.S.A. tied for third. Only two of the 30 top finishers were Americans.
As we head toward the Olympics, let's hope the U.S.A. can field a strong team, as the competition will be intense.*
* This * is more than an asterisk. It is for Asterisk Talley, a 15-year-old amateur from Chowchilla, CA, who finished 44th. Way to go!

Saddened
I was not shocked but extremely sad to hear about Jim Otto's passing last week. (Issue #539: https://conta.cc/3UWDw4s)
Jim was a one-of-a-kind in many ways. More than a great football player, he was a very good person who would give and give to the community, if it benefited that community. Not himself. I was pleased to induct him into our Hall of Fame and he was always there when I needed him. I visited him at his home and I knew it was going to be a good visit each visit.
God only created one Jim Otto, and I am so happy I had the opportunity to know him well as a friend and an unbelievable athlete. But a better person.

“George Selleck is one of those rare individuals who is as good a person as he is as an athlete, so it is no wonder that he has taken up sportsmanship as his cause.” – John Wooden
|
College, Pros:
The Decline
Of Sports
by Dave Newhouse
| |
Dr. George Selleck is a man of letters, not medicine, though he does believe in curing. And his current “patient” is the world of sports, which he views as unhealthy. His diagnosis is wedged between slippage and sick bay, but stopping short of calling for a hearse.
Selleck knows a great deal about athletics as a basketball and baseball star at Stanford in the 1950s, rejecting professional possibilities after being drafted in both sports. He was more interested in education, and received his doctorate in religion. He turns 90 in August, but he’s still tuned into sports, and is working diligently on an engaging book project: “The Magic of Sports: An Athlete’s Journey.”
He took time off from his daily writing to tackle an assignment I gave him, listing the five things he likes and dislikes about professional and collegiate sports, both of which he has observed since the 1940s.
Beginning with his dislikes, he disapproves of the “dominance of athleticism in today's game; I respect and appreciate it, but it undercuts a more complete player and game….making the game all about individual skills at the cost of team play and development.” In other words, more flash than substance.
Selleck’s not some old-timer complaining about today’s modernized game. He disapproves of the 24-second shot clock, of which he said, “There’s not enough time to utilize traditional skills to work as an entire team; there’s only enough time for pick-and-rolls. You have five seconds to in-bound the ball, and 10 seconds to get it past half court, which leaves you nine seconds. I think 30 to 36 seconds makes more sense on the shot clock, maybe even 40 seconds.”
He isn’t happy either with the referees, though he once was a Pac-12 referee himself. “A significant amount of them might have played only in high school, so they can’t make the blocking or charging call.” He doesn’t fault them entirely, because with a seven-foot center, "It’s hard to see his feet and the basket at the same time.”
Selleck finds the transfer portal “ridiculous,” and paying college athletes (beyond scholarships) has its problems. “I understand that colleges are making money off these kids, but where does that put athletes in minor sports? These are not simple issues.”
| |
George Selleck, class of 1956, was inducted into the Stanford
Athletics Hall of Fame in 1958
As for what he likes about sports today:
No. 1 is a blending of those “old fashion skills with today’s athleticism,” wherever and whenever he sees it.
No. 2 is "Mental outlook, which can make or break you, like life itself. Giving up, getting mad, being lazy, feeling cheated, pouting, being jealous, lacking team unity and spirit, feeling hesitant and inferior, getting nervous in the clutch….all these are excuses that can turn success into forgotten dreams.”
He used Draymond Green as an example of someone's temper becoming “an unconscious excuse for his poor play.” Green didn’t get one vote on the NBA’s All-Defensive Team. “They’re seeing what I’m seeing,” Selleck said.
He added teamwork, selflessness, all-around skills, the economic advantages for poor kids, and the international aspect as positives on his list, with one caveat: “European players are much more developed (when they get to the NBA than Americans).”
Selleck had some closing remarks about basketball, the game which made him one of Stanford’s all-time greats.
“I see the game like so many things in our culture — I see its potential, but I also see it failing to protect its values,” he said. “Basketball is losing its punch for me because, once again, it’s focused too much on the individual, not the team. It’s succeeding in business at the cost of the beauty of the game. Nobody is talking about supporting the aspects of the game which make it beautiful. All the emphasis is on marketing."

Dog Days Getting Hotter and Team Owners Getting Wooftier
by Howard Pearlstein
We seem to be stuck with a lot of post-COVID changes, some by the pandemic that killed off a million people in America, some that have been long-term long-time coming events, especially climatic norms shifting around in season and location like Scrabble tiles between games – rain, drought, cold, hot, storms, hurricanes and
tornadoes. (We still seem to be the world capitol of those twisters -- something like 90% in the USA portion of North America. And for those who find our past slipping away too soon, that means another generation or two will still understand the plot basics of Wizard of Oz.)
Unfortunately, the devastation of that pandemic has left us with closed businesses and unemployed skilled workers and a damaged economic reality in which everything costs around 20% more than before. No one’s fault -- not Biden’s or Trump’s – it’s a virus.
What goes on unchanged is the annual whine-fest of the billionaire team owners over how much to pay those uniquely talented humans who make the teams worth watching. Given the difficulty most fans have of handling the 20% price-bump in life-needs, the owners’ breast-beating angst about paying up to the people who put
their asses and lifelong health on the line is no longer as tolerable or amusing as it once might have been.
The players are the reasons that make us want to watch, like the Purdy-to-Aiyuk magic as part of the overall Deebo, McCaffrey, Kittle, third-and-Jauan magic. Any moment of those can amaze and thrill, but when those things become nothing more than price points, then something important has just lost its essence. The moment a
player says in an interview: “I know it’s a business,” may be one of the saddest because it’s about an athlete knowing he or she has become a commodity.
And the owners? Same as was once said about Pawn Shop owners – “They know the price of everything and the value of nothing.” Some of them love the game, and some of them just love the, “Hey, kiss my butt -- I own a team.”
Here in the Bay Area we’re really fortunate to have teams like the 9ers and the Dubs owned by people who love the game. (I don’t know about the Giants – don’t pay much attention to baseball, although we once had a feisty team, the A’s, who had a great owner or two. No longer. Now they’re owned by one more spoiled brat
heir to a fortune who thinks sports teams belong in Las Vegas, the whorehouse of America, where the only product they sell is a myth that you can beat the house.)
Meanwhile, in the world of sports played for the love of the game, we have USWS Bay FC – a first year soccer expansion team who lost their primo drafted player, Alex Loera, to a season-ending injury in her first game. But with a powerful “nonetheless” attitude, they’ve continued on, winning a game against San Diego Wave on May 27. Scarlett Camberos kicked a 15 yard goal from an assist by wonderfully soccer-named Kiki Wickett, to tie at minute 56. The win came at minute 87
when Racheal Kundananji put it in the net, breaking the Wave’s 15-0 record of wins when leading at half-time.
Bay FC games are on ION TV, available on cable and satellite on KKPX.
COMCAST: Channel 711, 1065, SPECTRUM: Channel 5, AT&T: Channel 1065, DISH: Channel 250, DIRECTV: 305 HD

Vol. 82: The Antitrust Fun For College Sports Isn't Over Yet
| |
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
by Darren Heitner
Founder of HEITNERLEGAL
My colleague Marc Edelman recently wrote that the NCAA "may negotiate for anything it wants. However, absent a union and thus the application of the non-statutory labor exemption, you can’t really negotiate away future antitrust liability."
He added, "The fun isn’t over yet, friends."
Edelman's comment was a reply to Nicole Auerbach noting that "the NCAA negotiated for significant protections that allow it to enforce its existing rules," under the settlement terms that it reached along with the power conferences to put an end to some pending antitrust litigation including House v. NCAA.
Auerbach also said, "details to come on that."
That seems to be the standard rhetoric from the plaintiffs' lawyers who hinted at "mechanisms" to route pay-for-play from the system and largely regulate NIL collectives, which have gained immense power and leverage in a short window. Yet, no details have emerged and, once they do (assuming this is a prong that remains in the proposed settlement agreement), it may be time to revert to Edelman's comment, if you find litigation enjoyable.
Without collective bargaining, which the NCAA and major conferences will continue to resist, the NCAA and those conferences will need a lifeline from Congress to push forward new restrictions that do not avoid antitrust scrutiny.
While Sen. Ted Cruz recently said that there is an "urgent need for Congress to act," that sentiment is not shared by all on Capitol Hill, which means that it is more likely than not that no NIL bills will be passed before the end of the 2024 calendar year. For instance, Rep. Lori Trahan said that instead of asking Congress to "turn back the clock, college leaders should take this opportunity to embrace a future where athletes have a seat and a voice at the table when decisions are made about the industry build on their hard work."

Earthquakes 1, New York City FC 5
Quakes head into international break, return to MLS play June 15 at home vs.
FC Cincinnati
NEW YORK – The San Jose Earthquakes fell 5-1 to New York City Football Club on Friday at Yankee Stadium in front of 20,188 fans.
After a scoreless first half, the hosts struck first when Hannes Wolf finished a Santiago Rodriguez feed in the 50th minute. San Jose would answer three minutes later when outstanding holdup play from Jeremy Ebobisse and a subsequent through ball from Hernán López led to Amahl Pellegrino’s fifth goal of the season. However, in the 80th minute, Santiago Rodriguez scored from the edge of the box for the go-ahead goal. Alonso Martinez would subsequently net the third through fifth in the 85th, 92nd and 95th minutes to put the game away.
The Quakes now head into the international break before resuming MLS play on Saturday, June 15, in a home match against FC Cincinnati. Kickoff from PayPal Park is set for 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, as well as on local radio via AM 810 The Spread (English) and AM 1370 La Kaliente (Spanish).

Oakland Conceded Early,
Fall in Colorado 1-0
Colorado Springs Switchbacks got on the board first against Oakland Roots when Delentz Pierre struck perfectly for the home side as they stormed out to the early 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of the game.
Less than ten minutes later, Oakland was awarded a penalty kick, but the assistant referee overturned the call, taking away the penalty for the Roots.
Oakland pressed on the front foot after the unlucky call for the majority of the first half. The best chance of the half for the Roots came on a curling effort from Trayvone Reid, but his 42nd minute shot came off the crossbar.
Despite Oakland’s best efforts, it was Colorado Springs who held onto the 1-0 advantage going into the halftime break.

Oakland Soul Win 3-2 At Home Versus Pleasanton Rage
It was a back and forth contest in the Oakland hills on Thursday night, but in the end Soul earned all three points versus Pleasanton Rage thanks to three second-half goals, reaching the final whistle with a 3-2 lead.
Despite sustained pressure from Soul, it was Pleasanton that would open the scoring in the 14th minute when Rage’s Elise Ziem took a shot in close which was initially saved, but whose rebound would find Marivic Lek-Miro with an open net to shoot on to give her side a 1-0 lead.
Oakland remained aggressive and was rewarded with the next two goals of the match. First was a skill shot from Soul forward Jordan Geis, who shook a defender near the edge of the box and put a charge into a shot that found just enough open space next to the Rage keeper to find the back of the net and knot things up at 1-1.
In the 61st minute, Geis would get involved again, this time pushing up the left side of the pitch and slotting a pass through the box to Cecilia Gee who buried the one-timer into the twine to give Oakland a 2-1 lead.

Ferrari Racing Days Rolls into Monterey
for an all-Ferrari Motorsports Festival
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Welcomes Visitors for Third Consecutive Weekend
of Activities
MONTEREY, Calif., May 16, 2024—The hillsides of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca take on a decidedly Italian flair this weekend as one of the most famous luxury brands in the world brings its storied history and automobiles to Monterey for Ferrari Racing Days. The three-day gathering of racing and road cars begins ticketed entry Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19.
The histories of Ferrari and Laguna Seca have been intertwined since 1957. The first of many memorable moments came at the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Race at the “new” Laguna Seca. It was here that Pete Lovely, driving a Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa, upset the star-studded field to win and forever cementing Ferrari’s place in Monterey history.
“The Laguna Seca Recreation Area has shifted from Trans Am muscle cars, to ultra-advance IMSA prototypes and sports cars to the Prancing Horses of an all Ferrari gathering in three weeks’ time,” commented John Narigi, president of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “These three events are providing a significant boost to Monterey County’s local businesses with a steady influx of visitors during a traditionally slow visitation month.”

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff
This video shows the Oakland A's turned one of only 15 unassisted triple plays, in all of MLB history,
against the Yankees.
Only 735 triple plays have
occurred in MLB history.
One site has every triple play which has happened.
If not for a man left on base, pointed out to me by someone with me at a ballgame,
I would have been a witness to one of them.
