The PAC-4
Yes, it sounds more like a pop-culture band than a Football Conference.
We've had of The Gruesome Twosome, The Three Amigos, the
Jackson Five, Six Flags, 7-11, Eight is Enough and Nine Inch Nails.
Now, we have the PAC-4, as in Washington State, Oregon State, Stanford and Cal.
The rest of the 100-year-old Pac 8/10/12 Conference schools have left it behind for the privilege of traveling 3,000 miles (x 2), to play Rutgers. How the players and their families must be thrilled.
What happened? What will happen? Nobody really knows. Three mega-conferences have formed, wildly transforming college sports as we have known it.
In the words of the immortal Jed Clampett, "Pitiful. Just Pitiful."

Politics: The 49er QB Primaries
First, let me state that I will heartily support any QB selected from the list of candidates, and with the potent 49er offense, any QB will start with plenty of weaponry.
Let's start with Brock Purdy. With training camp tickets sold out, the TV clips we, the fans receive, bother me. If he is doing badly, I want to know. Give me a full session and, if not that, how about more than hand-picked mini highlights. We need to know about consistency. Yes, Brock has more composure and command, but it is likely too soon for him to start after his elbow issues.
Trey Lance, which many forget, was last season's starter before he got hurt. People now say he's a bust. I say Trey has a brighter upside, is more athletic and has a better arm. Trey adds more variety and
gives defenses more to think about. Brock can run, but generally does so only if under duress.
So, I cast my Vote for Trey Lance, but will root for any of the four candidates: Brock, Trey, Sam Darnold or Brandon Allen, as long as he knows the Offense.

“I’m sad and disappointed,” said former Pac-12 commissioner
Tom Hansen. “It’s more like a family breaking up.”

|
Pac-12 Conflagration
by Dave Newhouse
| |
Ah, the Pacific-12, the Conference of Champions, which began playing sports in 1916, and is the very essence of dominance, with 553 NCAA men’s and women’s titles, 200 more than the next conference.
What’s that you say, USC and UCLA are moving to the Big Ten next year, with Oregon and Washington joining them? Oh, my, it’s now the Pac-8, the conference of crumbling.
Hold on, there’s more abandonment? Yes, Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State are all headed to the Big 12. We’ll be left with the Pac-4, the conference of capsizing.
Only Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State would then remain in the biggest conference upheaval in, perhaps, college athletics history.
“I’m sad and disappointed,” said Tom Hansen. “It’s more like a family breaking up.”
Hansen had a 33-year Pac-12 relationship as a staff member in the 1960s and as its commissioner from 1983 to 2009, when the Pac-12 took flight in achieving both men’s and women’s team and individual national titles. He is disheartened by the conference’s disintegration.
“I feel badly about the four (universities) that were left behind,” he said,” because they feel left out in the cold.”
| |
Pac-4, the conference of capsizing
That’s not to say Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State are beholden to what’s now the Pac-4, because conference “shifting" is the new watchword in college athletics, and who knows where any college will be affiliated down the road, not when television money is the driving force.
“There’s never enough dollars, and that’s what has happened,” Hansen continued. “The (Pac-12) conference went to the (TV) market at a most unfortunate time (for conference survival). But the dollar figures are dramatic, and the appetites of the athletic departments are voracious.”
Voracious enough that college programs, Hansen fears, will wind up gorging on themselves?
“I have many concerns,” he said, "but there are many activist groups who wish to treat student athletes as employees. I worry that it will become so expensive that only a few conferences will remain in business.”
These same student-athletes now receive corporate-like offers to jump conferences, parading as professionals in what formerly was amateur competition. Hansen believes there’s a possibility that only three or four major conferences will survive this blatant money game, where football pays the freight — and air fare — for the other sports.
“Football teams fly charter,” he noted, “but the Olympic sports teams fly commercial.”
And commercial is more expensive, especially when, say, a women’s tennis team from USC flies to New Jersey to play a Big 10 Conference match against Rutgers. Flight, lodging and meals that must be paid for, likely with little attendance to help foot the bill.
And we haven’t even gotten into the likes of volleyball, swimming and crew, with larger traveling parties. Even an Economics 1A professor can see the financial risks forthcoming.
Hansen, who still lives in the East Bay, is a Washington alumnus who “hasn’t gotten there yet” in terms of emotionally seeing his Huskies playing conference games in the Midwest and on the East Coast. He’s more concerned about the Apple Cup rivalry, Washington versus Washington State.
“Hopefully, that won’t be lost,” he said, his voice suddenly saddened. “I don’t see how they deal with all these issues.”
“They” are the money-grabbers who’ve tilted college athletics off its axis, never to return to normal orbit.

For some reason, Buster Posey came to mind.
A catcher like Posey is what is needed to increase the chances of the Giants advancing deep into the postseason. As I started to look at this now-retired great, I found I didn't even know his full name. This will be easy for some. Born in Georgia, on March 27, 1987, "Buster" was given the full name of...
I couldn't even get it right on a multiple-choice question below, but I'm not a Giants fan, either.
Answer below.

US Women’s National Team --
The Knockout Round
by Howard Pearlstein
First of all, they won the last two World Cups, meaning, as all Warriors fans know: They have a target on their back. Every team, every sport has a Plan B if “Win it All” isn’t in the cards -- “At least beat the reigning champs.”
Second: They don’t have the same team with which they won the last two World Cups. Among the ones who moved on: Morgan Brian, Samantha Mewis (the sister team with Kristie – broken up when Sam needed knee surgery), Tobin Heath (one of the best players in the world), Christen Press, Carli Lloyd (hero of 2015 championship team).
And third, just using the word “threepeat” brings to mind the old TV show You Bet Your Life… “Say the Magic Word and the duck comes down...” Nah, not this time. Say the magic word and all the old gods come down, pointing a finger with a rueful smile, saying "HUBRIS." Just makes that target on the back that much larger and flashing neon colors.
“Threepeat” dares everyone to bring it with everything they’ve got.
George Mikan’s Lakers did it, Bill Russell’s Celtics, damnit (my 1950s Philly boy talking), Michael Jordan’s Bulls did it—twice, and the Shaq and Kobe Lakers did it in Y2K, when Pat Riley coined the term.
The Yankees did it. The Islanders took the Stanley Cup three in a row. NFL? Nope. Green Bay won the title, and THEN won the first two Super Bowls. Not the same.
And to do it in three-four-year intervals… gravity and age are also lined up to take their shots. So wow.
I don’t know what’s missing to make them seem so inept, so discombobulated this year. Nine players have played together before on one of two teams -- Washington Spirit, the D.C team, and the Seattle OL Reign. Plus some major players from other clubs – Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Alex Morgan, and the amazing Megan Rapinoe – all of them major forces. Julie Ertz? One soccer analyst put it this way: “Julie Ertz? She can have my back any time, any place. Zombie Apocalypse – I want Julie Ertz to cover my back.”
So what’s wrong? Where’s the plan?
It’s the coach. I see him as a cigar store Indian, standing tall, looking tough, but carved out of wood.
He chose these players but he doesn’t seem to have any plan at all. As smart and athletic as these women are, with decent coaching and a working plan, they could easily fix the problems -- synchronize off ball movement and dominate with short quick passes. But they’re not getting it. England is literally kicking the crap out of other teams with those tactics.
I’m writing this on Friday, so we’ll see.
Sunday is the knockout game with Sweden. Everyone is doom and gloom except Lindsey Horan: “It wouldn’t be a major tournament if we weren’t facing Sweden. We always find a way to play them in these big tournaments…”
They’ve got the players, they’ve got the heart.
Saturday Simone Biles returns to competition -- I’ll be watching that.
And then -- despite everything, I have hopes that on Monday I’ll be looking up the knockout schedule for their next game, instead of checking the 9ers training camp news to see that I’m spelling J’ayir Brown’s name correctly. (Well, I’ll also do that, but later.)
I have hopes. I know these players can do it, and when they do, I’ll be muttering mirable dictu on Monday, because with this coach, it might take a miracle.
* * *
Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Tommy Moe -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
I met Olympic Downhill and Super G Gold and Silver medal winner Tommy Moe at a sports show he attended in Los Angeles. The one thing I remembered most when I met him was that he had a lot of incredible action photos to sell at his table. I had a chance to chat with him and he showed me his gold medal. Very nice guy

The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, was a guest on The Steve Allen Show, (a syndicated Filmways, Inc. revival of the original Tonight show), for which my father, Lee Moselle (above), was executive producer.
He had been an entertainment attorney in New York, and clients included Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rod Serling, Katherine Dunham and major Broadway talent. Filmways was also a client and persuaded him to move to Los Angeles as legal counsel and president.
Filmways would later acquire Sears Point International Raceway, now Sonoma Raceway, and my dad was asked to help revive it, and was named president. He got it back on the motorsports map, and it was subsequently sold by Filmways just when Laguna Seca (in Monterey) needed new leadership. Laguna Seca asked him to take the helm, which he did as Executive Director of SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Association of Monterey Peninsula) for 13 years.
With a lengthened track and numerous upgrades, he was able to attract NASCAR, international motorcycle events with Kenny Roberts and other MX luminaries, CART (now IndyCar) and other major attractions. He helped SCRAMP raise millions of dollars for local charities and elevate Laguna Seca into the elite facility it is today. To my knowledge, he is the only person to have been chief executive at both Sears Point and Laguna Seca.
James Brown graciously accommodated my father’s request for an autograph, complete with sage advice for my Washington & Lee brothers. When James brought his show to Roanoke, VA, we all made the pilgrimage to watch the hardest working man in show business work his magic -- cape, band and pure dynamite energy.
The Godfather was a Class Act!

Oakland Secure Shutout Victory Away
in Charleston
Charleston Battery took early control of the game through possession but never seriously threatened the Oakland net in the first 20 minutes. The Battery continued on the front foot, with players like Austine Williams, Fidel Barajas, and Beto Avila creating danger in front of Oakland’s goal. However, against the run of play, Oakland eventually scored when Memo Diaz curled a perfect cross to Danny Barbir, who headed Roots into the lead in the 41st minute. Oakland maintained that 1-0 advantage into the half.
In the second half, the Battery came out in control again as Roots' center back, Emrah Klimenta, cleared one off the line to keep his side in the lead minutes into the half. While Charleston maintained possession, Oakland created the best couple of chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half through Johnny Rodriguez and Jeciel Cedeño. In the 63rd minute, Nick Markanich had the best chance for the home side, but he pulled it wide, much to the relief of Oakland. Paul Blanchette was forced into a big save in the 79th minute to preserve the lead. Oakland was forced into a few substitutions but were able to hang on in the end for a hard fought shutout victory on the road.
Oakland Roots will now have a week off before returning home on Saturday, August 19th to host Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
