Losing the Super Bowl is worse than death.
You have to get up the next morning.
-- NFL coach George Allen
Pro Football Hall of Fame, 2002
|

After an unexpected and highly successful season, the San Francisco 49ers fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, 31-20. Behind in the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs' uber-talented quarterback, converted every opportunity for 21 points and another dramatic playoff win. "After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the media: 'We'll lick our wounds, and we'll get over this,' Kyle said a few minutes before in a makeshift press conference tent a few yards outside of the stadium. He was patient and honest, seemingly in no hurry to fast forward through the public dissection of a loss. 'We'll be fired up for next year.'"

NBA Legends Kobe Bryant and Jerry West |
On Saturday evening January 25 I was at Solano College watching some of America's finest high school basketball players exhibiting their skills at the "Crush In the Valley Basketball Showcase." Their athletic abilities might take some to a college scholarship and even propel a very select few to the fantasy of a pro career.
.
I can only imagine what many of these young men, their coaches, friends and families experienced the next morning trying to process the gut-punching news of the helicopter crash in Calabasas that took one of sports most competitive athletes, his daughter, and seven other precious lives in horrific fashion. For some this was the first and most significant public death in their lives.
In just a few weeks the NBA has lost two giants, former Commissioner David Stern and Kobe Bryant. Stern helped create the global business map of basketball but it was the Black Mamba's style, skill and competitive DNA that resonated with fans from Beijing to Buenos Aires.
Jerry West and I worked together in Memphis with the Grizzlies from 2002 to 2007. If there is an
NBA Most Competitive All-Star team
Jerry West would be selected as a starter by anyone who knows the game. West's 20/20 vision on what makes youthful abilities turn into greatness is always at work. He saw that in a young player from Lower Merion High School in suburban Philadelphia.
Millions of basketball fans watched Kobe grow up with a relentless pursuit of excellence which rubbed some raw. Many of those close to him were impressed on how the Mamba was maturing. He was figuring out what he could do away from the court, which was his canvas.
Like all mortals he had missteps which matured into a fierce commitment to his family. Girls and boys who love basketball have seen how the game brings people of all backgrounds together. In an age of increasing divides, Kobe Bryant's memory should be celebrated in his message, "We are more than what we do."

Master Baker Fernando Padilla with football breads
SONOMA, Calif. -- To address the winter doldrums among American sports fans in the weeks leading up to NASCAR's Daytona 500, FOX aired a football contest on Sunday involving teams from San Francisco and Kansas City. The head honchos of Sonoma Raceway and Kansas Speedway sparked interest in the game via a small wager involving signature
regional food products.
For his part, Steve Page, Sonoma Raceway president and general manager, put up a package of Boudin Sourdough, including a Kansas City team logo made entirely of their gourmet sourdough. Kansas Speedway president Patrick Warren countered the wager with a selection from local favorite Jack Stack's Barbecue.
"
I've told the folks at Boudin they can take the day off Monday because our 49ers are going to be all over South Beach Sunday night celebrating the new hardware they'll be adding to their trophy case," said Page before the game, whose facility will host its annual NASCAR event, the Toyota/Save Mart 350, June 12-14. "We'll be loving us some KC barbecue around the Sonoma Raceway
conference table." (Editor's note: Final score -- KC 31, SF 20.)
Once the clock runs out on Sunday's game, the official countdown to the Daytona 500 begins. The NASCAR Cup Series season opener will be televised live on FOX on Sunday, Feb. 16.

Sports Prep Star -- Mike Mitchell
Archbishop Mitty-San Jose - Basketball - Junior
Mike Mitchell, considered by some to be the best all-around player in the vaunted West Catholic Athletic League, the Pepperdine-commit helped lead the Monarchs to a 16-3 overall record through the end of January. The quick and agile point guard is just fine being a lockdown defender while playing the role of facilitator on offense but Mitchell can take on a scoring role when his team needs it. Mitty's 59-55 win over Bellarmine-San Jose -- a matchup of two Top 5 teams in the SportStars NorCal Top 20 -- was a prime example. Mitchell led the Monarchs with 18 points and added seven rebounds. Mitty entered February one game back of SportStars No. 1 Riordan-S.F. in the WCAL standings. The two teams meet on Feb. 11.
