Overlooked Hall of Fame Candidates
I spent an enjoyable and delightful time reading Dave Newhouse's piece regarding the absence of certain athletes in Baseball's Hall of Fame. I strongly disagree with the nomination committee and question overlooking each of the athletes he mentions: Steve Garvey, John Brodie, and Curt Flood. I am amazed at the dedication, devotion and discipline it took for these athletes to perform to the level they did and not make the Hall of Fame. But I am delighted to report that I inducted Curt Flood and John Brodie into the African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame.

However, it does not surprise me, because I know the nomination committee has a different agenda and should be ashamed for overlooking these incredible and deserving athletes. Every professional athlete who benefited from Curt Flood's sacrifice should send a letter to Major League Baseball supporting his induction. By sacrificing his career for others shows the kind, gentle, and thoughtful spirit he had. His ability to overcome adversity after losing his case with grace and dignity is a testament to his inner strength.

2021 Ryder Cup
Easy Ryder:
The Defeat of the Spanish Armada

By Robert A. Moselle, Esq.

The Ryder Cup is golf's pre-eminent event, biennially bringing together 12-member teams from the U.S. and Europe for glory and pride on a three-day worldwide stage. Spanning 91 years and now 42 competitions, the Ryder Cup also is among the last great professional sporting events where winning, and not prize money, is the reward.

This article is NOT about the Spanish fleet, "The Spanish Armada," which sailed against England in 1588 and was brutally defeated in a battle which altered European history.

Instead, let's Fast Forward to September, 2021. Media had created a new Spanish Armada, one which would also go down in flames, this time as millions of people around the world watched the battle unfold in a far-distant land, Wisconsin, USA.

The new Armada consisted of Spaniards Sergio Garcia, the golfer American fans most love to hate, but who had become the European with the most points ever won in Ryder Cup competition, and his countryman, Jon Rahm, who had played his way this year to earn the position as the #1 ranked player in the world. Surely with these two leaders, Europe would continue its dominance of the last several decades of Ryder Cup competition.

Instead, the USA inflicted the largest defeat in Ryder Cup history on the Spanish Armada, which could now sail back to Spain on the SS WTF, while their Brexit quasi-compatriots returned to Britain, Norway, and Austria. Both Garcia and Rahm LOST their final round matches, to complete the Defeat of the Spanish Armada, 2021 style. The domination by Team USA was the largest in Ryder Cup history, 19-9 points.

Kudos to USA team captain Steve Stricker who mixed, matched and motivated the Americans to a level of which Dr. Phil would be proud, and to the entire team, which put aside gossips or feuds, real or imagined, and produced a unified and potent powerhouse.

Also, a tip of the cap to sportsmanship, as players from both sides came together as the ceremonies concluded in friendship as they tried to digest what had happened and what future Ryder Cup contests may hold for each side.

The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and
Hall of Fame: September Inductions

By Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
September is Hispanic Heritage month, as designated officially by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting September 15 and ending October 15. Originally, the observation started under President Lyndon Johnson and was later extended by Reagan. The Hispanic or Latino population, which includes people of any race, was 62.1 million in 2020.

The Hispanic or Latino population grew 23%, the largest ethnic minority in the country. Many publications have emphasized that there are at least 11 to 15 million Hispanics who are undocumented today in the country. For obvious reasons, if those numbers are accurate, they were not included in the recent U.S. Census.

The official U.S. Government Census only uses Hispanic or Latino, not LATINX to classify the largest minority. The term, LATINX, is used mostly by academia and activists.

The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, founded in 1999 as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization in San Francisco, announced inductions in the month of September. The following players were inducted: Saturday, September 11 at Progressive Field, Cleveland: Candido (Candy) Maldonado, Sandy Alomar and Carlos Baerga. Sunday, September 19 at Fenway Park, Boston: José Santiago. All these inductees were born in Puerto Rico.

The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame have 78 members, which includes the above inductees. http://www.hhbmhof.com.

Roots Lose at the Death in Orange County

Oakland Roots controlled long spells of the game taking a lead through Ariel Mbumba who picked up his fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute. Following a number of first half chances for Oakland Roots, Orange County scored late in the first half through captain Micheal Orozco, who was unmarked at the back post. The sides went into the half level despite multiple chances for the Roots to score a second before the Orozco equalizer.

The second half was a battle as both teams had chances to win the game. Orange County found the best of those chances as they won the game on another set piece in the dying moments of stoppage time to give the home side all three points. Oakland Roots return home for two important games at Laney against Las Vegas and Sacramento.

Winners selected in London on November 18

MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 21, 2021 — The Historic Motoring Awards, presented by Octane magazine, today announced that the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2021 Motorsport Event of the Year category. The historic racing and lifestyle event was held August 12-15 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and celebrated the 55th anniversary of Ford in Trans-Am as featured marque.

Now in its eleventh year, the Historic Motoring Awards brings together the elite in the world of classic cars to reward the people, events, museums, clubs, series, books and films that have marked the year in a wide range of categories established by the experts from Octane and an international panel.

The winners in each of the 16 categories will be announced at a gala celebration to be held at the Rosewood Hotel in London November 18. To view all the finalists, please visit Historic Motoring Awards.
“It is an honor to have such an esteemed international organization and panel of judges select the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion as a finalist for this recognition,” said John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It is particularly gratifying to have it be the only U.S. gathering nominated for the Motorsport Event of the Year. Our entire team appreciates the many participants who shared their incredible race cars with guests, and a worldwide audience who watched the daily live coverage.”

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion returned in 2021 with a fury from a pandemic-laden year to bring historic race cars and new features. More than 400 authentic race cars competed in 14 different race groups over the four days that was highlighted by a full field of historic Trans-Am cars. Complementing the elaborate Ford display, which was adjacent to the highly-regarded Rolex Drivers Club, was a special exhibit of the original five winners of the Pebble Beach Road Races, a colorful Indy Car Heritage Display, pre-1920 Ragtime Racers staged in front of a purpose-built 1920s working garage, and cars from La Carrera Panamericana.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is one of the cornerstones of the acclaimed Monterey Car Week, held annually in August.

Written for aspiring sports professionals, current sports industry professionals, and any career enthusiasts who are chasing the fancy logo and corner office, LOL, Loss of Logo: What’s Your Next Move? offers valuable takeaways for everyone. Comprised of powerful perspectives from 38 multitalented industry professionals, this book will give you the tools to succeed in the industry, with or without your logo.
The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
