Giants Claim NL West crown!

With the 11-4 rout of the San Diego Padres in Sunday afternoon’s regular season finale at Oracle Park, the Giants ended the Dodgers’ eight-year reign atop the National League West and captured their first division title since 2012.

Giants
Roar Into The Post Season

By Bruce Macgowan
The roar of the fans at Oracle Park was deafening as the players enjoyed a special celebration on the field Sunday, following an impressive 11-4 rout of the Padres. But clinching the NL West Division title was a grind.

It took a franchise record 107 wins and they had to go to the last day of the regular season to do it, but the determined Giants held off the Dodgers in one of the most compelling pennant chases ever between these two longtime rivals.

All season long most of us so-called ‘experts’ in the media kept expecting the Giants to falter. LA was just too good and the Giants were relying on too many journeymen and youngsters to hold off a team most figured would be the best in baseball once again.

And in fact, the Dodgers may end up repeating as World Series champs, that is IF they win the wild card game later this week against the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals and then knock off the Giants in the NLDS.
I’ve been covering the Giants since 1975, and watching them as a fan since they arrived here on the West Coast in 1958, but I can’t remember any Giants club quite like the 2021 edition.

In the spring, most baseball insiders predicted a .500 record at best for the Giants. After all, to win you have to have solid pitching and a productive offense and the Giants appeared to have mediocre quality in both departments.

Kevin Gausman was a little regarded journeyman at the start of this year. Logan Webb had not even pitched a full season. Anthony DeSchiafani and Alex Wood were not exactly world-beaters. And the bullpen? A mish-mash of unproven and mostly unknown players such as closer Jake McGee, sidewinder Tyler Rogers, and little known minor leaguers such as Dominic Leone, Jose Alvarez and hard throwing Camilo Doval.

But Gausman turned into one of the game's premier starters in the first half of the 2021 season because he developed a devastating split-finger fastball, Webb was the Giants’ best pitcher from the All-Star break on and DeSchiafani and Wood were fairly steady and reliable most of the season.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that the Giants kept winning consistently. They never went into a slump. They led the division almost the entire season. Of course no one expected them to pull away from LA, but they didn’t give into the pressure. They not only beat the rival Dodgers 9 out of 17 times but they also won a bunch of one-run games in the late innings.

Perhaps most significantly, the SF bullpen carried much of the load in the season’s second half. With injuries and illness depleting the Giants’ starting rotation, manager Gabe Kapler relied on his relief corps in a number of ‘bullpen games’ and that unit came through big time.

What might be just as amazing is the performance put on by the Giants’ three long time stars. Brandon Crawford had his best year ever, Brandon Belt, (before he broke his thumb,) was one of the game’s most dangerous power hitters, and Buster Posey reached back into his past to put together his best season in five years.

Then there were the youngsters and journeymen. A motley collection of unknowns. ‘Late night’ LaMonte Wade Jr, Darin Ruf, Alex Dickerson, Donovan Solano, Mike Yastrzemski, Austin Slater, Curt Casali, Thairo Estrada and Wilmer Flores all delivering clutch hits or superb defensive plays time and again.

As the wins piled up, the team’s confidence grew and the ‘one for all and all for one’ attitude in the clubhouse became infectious. No one complained when they weren’t in the lineup or were taken out of the game for a pinch hitter or for defensive purposes. No one created waves.

As a Bay Area native, I can only really remember two other local teams that came out of nowhere to stun the experts. In 1975, the Golden State Warriors shocked the NBA by winning their first West Coast NBA title. That club had a cast of unknowns with the exception of star Rick Barry.

In 1981 the San Francisco 49ers, just two years removed from a two win, 14 loss season swept their way into the playoffs behind young quarterback Joe Montana and then stunned Dallas and Cincinnati on the way to five Super Bowl titles over the next 14 years.

It’s much too early to predict the 2021 Giants will pull off some kind of similar surprise. But after watching what this team has done this season, it would not come as a shock if the Giants win their fourth World Series in 12 years. After all, who expected a season such as this one?

Letters to the Editor

A Tale of Two Cities
As the San Francisco Giants clinched the National League West on Sunday in a display of power, pitching and team chemistry, with a mix of newbies and veterans, future Hall of Famers, natural leaders and those eager to learn how to win, I decided to milk the game and festivities for as long as I could, not only for the love, but because I knew I might be tempted to tune into the 49ers, who were also on TV.

Normally, this would be an approach-approach conflict: two
good choices. But the sense of dread I have about Shanahan and his slow and steady destruction of the 49ers made this an approach-avoidance conflict. I milked the Giants Locker room for as long as I could, and when the party had ended, I caved and put on the DVR on the chance I might be wrong. I watched Jimmy G. zip the ball around and march the Niners downfield to take the lead.

Unfortunately, the euphoria didn't last long. By the time I had fixed a sandwich Jimmy was gone and so were the Niners' chances. But at least wunderkind Lance got into double figures on his total number of passes thrown in the last two years.

Let's face it, Shanahan disseminates more disinformation than a Macedonian troll. His constant deception has created an environment of mistrust, although he has helped Santa Clara become the "High-Ankle Sprain Capital of Sports." Jimmy G. was 24-8 and took us to the Super Bowl. Jimmy didn't play safety as the Chiefs roamed free through the 49ers secondary. That was "Three-quarters Shanahan's" blunder.

The 49ers need a new coach with fourth quarter smarts and media and team credibility. Some new shoes would also help. Lynch, do what you can, asap.

A Changing Landscape
If You Thought It Was 'Mickey Mouse' to Wager on Sports, You Were Right!

By Robert A. Moselle, Esq.

When he alerted voters of the 'giant sucking sound' of NAFTA, Ross Perot was ridiculed as alarmist in 1992, but his warning turned out to be prescient. Now that same sound is back, like a bad echo, except now it is the sound of family budgets getting sucked into casinos, pro sports franchises with in-arena betting parlors, state coffers as taxes and the home of Mickey Mouse himself, DISNEY/ESPN.

The world of sports betting is heating up, and the Walt Disney Company is considering making a wager. In an article in Newbreak, "Why Disney is Betting on an Expansion into Sports Gambling" writer Samson Amore notes: "It could also eventually use betting to drive viewership to its more traditional channels, including creating more TV shows, podcasts and written content around gambling. ESPN publishes some betting odds and has a handful of sports betting podcasts and TV shows, but it's directly avoided facilitating any bets on the platform."

Amore notes that CEO of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek, has stated that Disney intends to break into a world that has long been associated with vice. "Strategically, what sports betting gives us is the ability to appeal to a much younger sports fan viewer." That's VICE, not MICE!

In an article in Bloomberg News by Timothy L. O'Brien, Disney Wants to Build Sports Gambling's Future on ESPN, O'Brien notes: "At least one of ESPN’s most high-profile employees is interested in gambling, too.

Adam Schefter, a prominent on-air analyst designated by the network as an “NFL Insider,” recently invested in Boom Entertainment, a maker of sports and casino gambling apps that is also developing what it describes as “real money gaming products.”

One of Schefter’s co-investors in Boom is Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots football team and other sports ventures. Current and former gambling, sports and broadcast executives and companies are also investors.

Schefter’s stock in trade are football scoops such as new contracts, trades, injuries, starting line-ups and the other gossipy stuff that gives viewers a sense of who’s up or down, and who might win or lose. That information is also valuable to gamblers — or anyone who might own, say, a sizeable stake in a newfangled gambling company interested in digital sports betting. Viewers, and Schefter’s 8.5 million Twitter followers, might end up wondering whether he will shade his opinions or bury important information if he directly or indirectly has money riding on games and athletes. It gives a whole new meaning to “NFL Insider,” but ESPN seems unconcerned."

Sports is in transition. Suddenly, it's all about Odds, Over-Unders, putts made or missed and more and more wild and extreme GAMBLING choices which permeate every sport. Guess who loses. The casinos? Nooooo. Disney/ESPN? Noooooooo. Some Joe-six-pack who secretly opens an account and suddenly can't find enough dough to put food on the table? Oh Yeah! That's the ONE SURE BET as gambling continues its takeover of Sports.

Ain't that the truth? At this writing, the 2021 San Francisco Giants have tied the franchise record of 106 wins in the regular season, set by the 1904 New York Giants.

Franchise records are different from MLB records. 106 wins is far from the MLB record held by two teams. Which two teams are tied for the record of 116 wins in a regular season?

Roots Concede Late and Settle for a Draw

In front of just over 5,000 faithful at Laney College, the Roots battled the Lights to a draw on Saturday night amidst their playoff hunt effort. The Lights drew first blood early when Julian Vazquez got behind Oakland’s back line and crossed it into Daniel Trejo who bundled it home in the fifth minute, but the Roots responded well with a penalty kick opportunity 10 minutes later. Quincy Amarikwa was unable to beat Lights goalkeeper Alex Rando from the spot, but he wasn’t fazed, scoring just eight minutes later with an exquisite diving header. Tied at one apiece, the Roots began to control the tempo of the match and were rewarded with a Lights own goal after a dangerous cross into the box in the 28th minute, giving the Roots the lead.

The second half was a seesaw affair as the Lights sought an equalizer and the Roots pushed to score. Momentum shifted in the Roots’ favor in the 73rd minute when the Lights went down to ten men after a nasty foul on Memo Diaz, but they were unable to take advantage. It was Las Vegas that stole the show late when captain CC Uche buried a left-footed volley to salvage a point for the Lights and deal the Roots a blow in their playoff push effort.

The Roots look to bounce back on Wednesday at Laney College against Sacramento Republic in what will be a pivotal Norcal derby.

"It ain't over 'til it's over." -- Yogi Berra

The 1906 Chicago Cubs and the 2001 Seattle Mariners are tied for the record of 116 wins in a regular season, yet
neither team won the World Series!

The 1906 Cubs (116-36) lost to their crosstown rivals, the Chicago White Sox. The 2001 Mariners (116-46) didn't make it to the World Series, losing to the (95-65) New York Yankees. The Yankees lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks in an emotional World Series with much of the MLB fan base hoping for a Yankee victory because of the events of 9/11/2001. World championships top regular season records.

I could provide lots of links on this subject, but https://bit.ly/3B4BfZO is the best showing the winners of 100 games and whether or not they went on to the championship.

Until Boston is fully out, congrats to the success of the Giants, but GO RED SOX!

Navigating a career in any business is highly complex, especially in the world of sports and entertainment. Knowing how to separate the logo on your business card from your personal identity is a valuable skill for creating your own career path. Building a career in the sports industry is easier said than done, especially since the business is extremely addictive. Cool corporate logos and titles should never control your true sense of self; your name on the card is much more important! Welcome to the world of LOL, or “Loss of Logo.”
Written for aspiring sports professionals, current sports industry professionals, and any career enthusiasts who are chasing the fancy logo and corner office, LOL, Loss of Logo: What’s Your Next Move? offers valuable takeaways for everyone. Comprised of powerful perspectives from 38 multitalented industry professionals, this book will give you the tools to succeed in the industry, with or without your logo.
The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
