On July 4, 1939, six-time World Series champion and a retiring
Yankee legend made one of the most memorable speeches
in the annals of sports. Lou Gehrig proclaimed himself to be
“the luckiest man on the face of the earth,”
yet he would pass away in less than two years
from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the disease
which now bears his name.

BART Stops Here
Here's a headline I hadn't expected to read: Everybody Loves Bart! Of course it's in the Sports Section and is about the second overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, San Francisco Giants' catcher JOEY BART! He has developed into the player Giants fans had anxiously waited for.

Manager Gabe Kapler deserves a lot of credit as he has carefully selected how, when and where to play Joey. Bart's on time, and on track for a great season.

Two-pronged Unicorns -- Note to File
I'd read the articles and Sports Haikus in your publication about alleged two-pronged unicorns at Oracle, and had dismissed them as mere fantasy. However, after two recent victories -- one a walk-off grand slam and one a WVB -- (Win Via Balk), I'm ready to join the party.

With all the time which the Home Run Derby and the All-Star game will allow for our two-pronged friends to graze unfettered on Oracle greens, The G-Men may actually be in for a strangely successful World Series run.

World's Greatest Athlete
Sorry to disappoint, but no, this is not an article about me. However, it is an accurate caption: it describes Jim Thorpe, who was named the greatest athlete of the first 50 years of the 20th century by The Associated Press in 1950, and third-greatest of the entire century in 1999, behind only Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan.

The International Olympic Committee has reinstated Jim Thorpe as the sole winner of the gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics. This decision fully reverses a controversy which has festered for more than a century. Jim Thorpe, beloved in the Native American community, is an American hero and an injustice has finally been corrected.

Giants End First Half of Season with a Flourish

by Bruce Macgowan
The last thing a team wants to be doing going into the All-Star break is playing lousy baseball. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Giants were playing some terrible baseball. Numerous runners were left stranded on the bases, the normally reliable bullpen coughed up leads in alarming fashion, the hitting disappeared for days on end and the defense was minor league quality with the infield routinely kicking the ball around in alarming fashion.

The Giants dropped 14 of 18 games and one began to wonder if this team was going to have a realistic chance of being one of the three wild card playoff teams. There were even reports of dissatisfaction among the players with the effort and energy. Left-Handed ace Carlos Rodon as well as Manager Gabe Kapler both admitted publicly that the team needed more spark. Clearly what was needed was a clutch performance to jolt the Giants out of their malaise.

A little over a week ago, the Giants were clearly up against it. They had lost the first two games of a series to the Padres in San Diego and seemed to be perched on the precipice of disaster. Then Rodon stepped forward and had his best effort of the season, a complete game 3-1 win in which he shut down the Padres on just three hits, striking out 12 while reliable Wilmer Flores bashed a tie-
breaking two-run homer in the eighth inning to give Rodon enough support.

The next day the Giants’ offense exploded for 17 hits in a 13-0 rout as Flores smashed two more homers and drove in four runs in support of Alex Wood who cruised through seven innings and allowed just three hits while striking out eight. After those two wins, the Giants got a little strut back in their step.

Winning two of three against Arizona back in San Francisco kept the good vibes going, but then on Thursday night, the Giants wasted a 2-0 lead and lost in extra innings to Milwaukee. This was the kind of a game that Giants’ fans had been seeing all too frequently.

However, the next night the Giants played one of their most exciting games of the year. Well, we should say that for eight and a half innings this one was as dull as dishwater as the Giants appeared to be on their way to another dreary loss. Milwaukee led 5-2 and the Giants again looked punchless. But that would change quickly in stunning fashion when catcher Joey Bart slammed a solo homer to make it 5-3, and a ripple of hope surged through the crowd. But then Flores flied out and it looked as if Brewers’ relief ace Josh Hader was going to finish this one off in typical fashion. However, Darin Ruf then jolted Hader as he launched a mammoth 430 foot shot deep into the bleachers in left
center field and suddenly it was 5-4. Only about half of the crowd, probably around 12,000, were left to watch this eventful ninth inning and now everyone was on their feet. Hader’s stunning fall continued when the Giants best hitter, Austin Slater, singled and stole second base. Perhaps a bit unnerved, Hader then hit Yermin Mercedes with a pitch and then gave up a bloop single to Thairo Estrada, loading the bases.

Now the crowd was screaming its lungs out as Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of the great Boston Red Sox’ Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, strode purposefully to the plate. Yastrzemski has been a clutch hitter during his brief major league career but on this at bat, he had his most memorable hit, a game-winning grand slam that he crushed over the centerfield fence as the crowd went absolutely nuts! A shocking six run explosion gave San Francisco an 8-5 win.

I’ve watched enough baseball over the years to know that wins such as that one can jump start a team. The next two games seemed to indicate that as the Giants hung on for a gritty 2-1 win behind some terrific starting pitching from Alex Cobb on Saturday, then got five runs on a pair of homers from LaMonte Wade Jr. and Brandon Belt in a 9-5 win against the NL Central Division leaders on Sunday. Logan Webb went six solid innings and struck out five Brewers on his way to his ninth win of the year.

The second half will open with the most challenging series to date, a four game set against the mighty Dodgers in L.A. The Giants will need all of the elements that have been working recently to gain a split against their rivals. In their first series at LA, the Giants lost two but just a few weeks later SF took three straight from their rivals, so they certainly know they can give the Dodgers plenty of problems again.

This is a very flawed Giants team but if their two aces, Rodon and Webb can remain steady, if the bullpen and the defense can shore up a bit and the hitting can display some consistency then perhaps this 2022 Giants edition can squeeze into one of the three wild card spots.

There are certainly no guarantees, but seven wins in nine games just before the break was exactly what the Giants needed.

Nine Inning Inanities

by Andy Dolich
Now that July 4th Fireworks shows are shot and you still have ten working digits, I thought it might be time to take a poll of the most inane, overused, hypnotizing, lobotomized, bloviated terms and phrases spoken while you are listening and watching your favorite ball club on multiple media platforms.

We are in the Dog Days of Summer, including these banalities of baseball broadcasts:

  • That was a loud out
  • One swing can tie it up
  • That doesn’t look good
  • That ball was smoke
  • That was a great take
  • He just missed that pitch
  • What a rope
  • That ball would have been a homer in 29 other parks
  • He threw that at 99 mph
  • His Velo is down
  • I think he tweaked something
  • He’s trying to find himself
  • Adding "Y" to every player's first name, Don to "Donny"
  • Adding "ster" to many first names, the "Rickster"
  • He’s a five-inning guy
  • He’s rocking a cool lid
  • That was an outstanding at-bat, he walked
  • That is a great spoil
  • It’s crushed
  • That’s a mile-high popup
  • He is filthy
  • Just a bit outside
  • That was smoked
  • He has a rubber arm

One other point that I fail to comprehend is the mound conference where we see gloves over pitchers' and catchers' faces while talking on the mound. Don’t they know the advances in directional microphones are picking up every word back to the opposing dugout?

What and who is on your list?

Way back, way back, way back, tell it "Goodbye!"

The Giants selected lefthander/first baseman Reggie Crawford with the No. 30 pick in the 2022 Draft

A two-way standout from the University of Connecticut who hit 13 homers as a first baseman and logged 7 2/3 innings on the mound, Crawford got the scouting industry excited in his left arm when he touched triple digits over the summer while pitching for USA Baseball. The thrill was dashed in the fall when the Huskies star hurt his elbow and required Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out for all of the 2022 season.

In 1976, at the age of 14, Nadia Comaneci was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10.0 at an Olympic Games.

I had a friend in the early 2000 who worked for York. He invited me to a company ceremony and Nadia Comaneci made a guest appearance. She was gracious enough to autograph photos for everyone and what I remembered most was looking into her eyes as she looked up at me from her table and she smiled and said “Nice to meet you.“

If the Red Sox,
currently 14.5 games behind the Yankees,
came back and beat the Yankees to win the AL East, the Red Sox would set a new record for greatest comeback after mid-season.

Which team currently holds that record?

TWO-PRONGED UNICORNS

Return to the Land of Giants

The unicorn continues to hold a place in popular culture, as a symbol of fantasy and as an extremely wild woodland creature; a symbol of purity and grace whose horn has the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness. Now, from a place unknown, a family of two-pronged unicorns graces the greenery of Oracle Park, occasionally observed on days off or in the early A.M. hours. A true only-in-San Francisco phenomenon, they are here to infuse the Giants with the power and ferocity of the wild.

When readers and others have questioned the existence of two-pronged unicorns my standard reply is, "So you do believe in unicorns: thank you,
and drive safely."

The Giants are ready. The magic of our two-pronged friends has slowly begun to penetrate and awaken the inner powers of the Team.

Harvey Joins Stanford Sailing

The 2022 College Sailor of the Year joins Stanford's coaching staff as an assistant coach ahead of the 2022-23 campaign

STANFORD, Calif. Chris Klevan's staff will feature new assistant coach Shawn Harvey to start the 2022-23 season. Harvey replaces Greiner Hobbs who departed the program in June.

Harvey brings a wealth of experience to The Farm as he earned multiple prestigious sailing accolades during his time at Yale. Harvey also finished his bachelor's degree at the Ivy League school in 2022.

"Shawn is a phenomenal sailor from a historically great program," said Stanford head coach Chris Klevan. "I think we can all learn a lot from him and his experiences, and I'm excited to see what he adds to our group next year."

In 2022, Harvey was named the 2022 College Sailor of the Year, the same season he helped Yale to national titles in the ICSA Team Race Championships and a second place finish in the ICSA Open Fleet Race Championships. Harvey also led Yale to a national title in the Team Race Championships and Open Fleet Race Championships in 2019, making him a three-time national champion during his time in New Haven, Connecticut.

"When Shawn came on the scene, you could tell right away he was going to be an All-American," said Klevan. "What set Shawn apart from the rest, to me, was his dedication to his own development."

A three-time All-American and the 2020 NEISA Sailor of the Year, Harvey has also spent time on the national stage, racing in US Sailing events. In 2021, Harvey finished second in the Hinman Trophy -- the US Sailing Team Race National Championship.

"I'm excited to be back working with Shawn after our time in the 470 together," said assistant coach Augie Dale. "His experience as a college sailor and team racer will add a great resource to our team."

Shawn will help coach a Cardinal team that had one of the most successful spring seasons in program history, with a top five finish in each of the four national sailing events. Michelle Lahrkamp will return for Stanford after she became the first sailor in program history to earn All-American honors in both the Coed and Women's divisions in 2022.

"Last year, Shawn put together a historically great season that exceeded even the lofty expectations set by his first year in college sailing," added Klevan. "That's a hard thing to do. I think Shawn knows how to become great.

SJSU Athletics Announces Head Coaching Extensions

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Director of Athletics Jeff Konya announced extensions for women's gymnastics coach Joanne Bowers, baseball coach Brad Sanfilippo, men's soccer coach Simon Tobin and men's water polo coach Bruce Watson last week. Bowers just completed one of the most successful seasons in program history and signed a four-year extension, while Sanfilippo, Tobin and Watson each signed two-year extensions after strong seasons.

"All four of these coaches have and will continue to build champions in the classroom, in competition and in the community," said Konya. "These programs witnessed high levels of success, and I am very excited about the opportunity to continue working with these head coaches in the future."

Bowers finished her fourth season as the head coach of the women's gymnastics team and will lead the program through the 2027 season. The Spartans won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship with a meet record score of 196.425, third-highest score in program history, and went on to nearly upset Stanford in the NCAA Seattle Regional with a program-best regional score of 195.150. San José State set a school record on Senior Day inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center against UC Davis with a score of 196.625 to close out the home meets for the regular season. Jada Mazury, the MPSF all-around, bars and floor champion, was named College Gym News Breakout Performer of the Year.

"I want to thank Jeff KonyaRob Clark and Mary Quintanar for all the help and guidance through this process," said Bowers. "We are building something very special here at San José State University and I am thrilled and honored to know that our administration sees our value. Being able to coach our amazing gymnasts and work with an elite staff is very inspiring to me. This contract extension is comforting to our team and to our recruits as we move forward together. I love it here and am excited to keep building this program!"

Sanfilippo led the Spartans to their best season in over a decade with a 30-win season this year. The Spartans made their first-ever appearance in the Mountain West championship game and set the single-season school record in home runs. Charles McAdoo became the first SJSU baseball player to garner All-America honors by earning a spot on the Collegiate Baseball All-America season team, setting a new school record by reaching base safely in 44 consecutive games. Sanfilippo's extension runs through the end of the 2025 season.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to build Spartan Baseball back to prominence," said Sanfilippo. "I want to thank Interim President Steve Perez, Athletic Director Jeff Konya and his administration, in particular Rob Clark and Scott MacDonald, for their support of our efforts. Our players have stayed extremely loyal and dedicated to SJSU, their teammates, and this coaching staff and their performance on and off the field has been tremendous. I also have to acknowledge Thomas Walker and his work in recruiting and the development of this Spartan Baseball family. My family and I are so excited about our future at San José State."

Tobin enters his ninth season as head coach of the men's soccer program, earning WAC Coach of the Year in 2021. The Spartans rattled off a nine-game unbeaten streak midway through the season, including their first win over a top-10 opponent in 16 years, defeating then-No. 10 Grand Canyon, 2-1, at the Spartan Soccer Complex. SJSU picked up results against a pair of top-20 teams for the first time in 21 years during the season, and made a run to the WAC semifinals before a depleted squad fell to eventual champion Grand Canyon.

"I am excited and honored to lead the SJSU men's soccer team through fall 2023," said Tobin. "My thanks go to SJSU Interim President Dr. Steve Perez and Athletics Director Jeff Konya for their support," said Tobin. "As I reach the home stretch of my career there are still some beautiful soccer games to coach and many wonderful young men to assist in achieving their dream of a SJSU degree."

Watson took over the reins of the men's water polo program when it was reinstated in December 2014 and is currently signed through the 2024 season. The Spartans finished inside the top-10 in the final Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings, finishing at No. 9.

SJSU picked up a pair of wins over top-15 Santa Clara (16-6 and 15-6), No. 9 San Diego (14-13), No. 10 Pepperdine (10-9 and 11-9), No. 12 Princeton (11-7), No. 14 UC Irvine (12-10) and picked up its third win over Pepperdine in the quarterfinals of the Golden Coast Conference championship, 10-8, to advance to the semifinals.

"I'm very excited and honored to be able to continue building and leading the men's water polo program here at San José State, my alma mater," said Watson. "We are very proud of the progress we have made, and looking forward to even more exciting things in the seasons to come. Go Spartans!"

Saint Mary's College Gaels
Gaels Returning to Jerry Colangelo Classic in 2022

PHOENIX, Ariz. — For the second year in a row, Saint Mary's Men's Basketball is included in the field for the Jerry Colangelo Classic. This year's version of the event will take place over the span of two separate days, beginning on December 10 and concluding on December 21.

The Gaels will play on both days of the classic, first taking on San Diego State on December 10, and then returning to face Wyoming on December 21. The Jerry Colangelo Classic will return to the Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns, giving the Gaels two opportunities to play in an NBA arena in an 11-day span.

"We are excited about returning to the Jerry Colangelo Classic in 2022," mentioned head coach Randy Bennett. "Neutral-site games at venues like Footprint Center are great experiences for our players, and help prepare us for where we want to be in March. It will be a good test for our team."

The Gaels and Aztecs have met in each of the past two seasons on neutral floors, including last year at the Jerry Colangelo Classic. SMC dropped last year's game by a score of 63-53, and the Gaels lost the year before when the two teams met in San Luis Obispo. Perhaps the third time is the charm for Saint Mary's, looking for their first win against San Diego State since 2009. The Aztecs were a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament last year, falling to Creighton in overtime in the opening round.

The matchup between Saint Mary's and Wyoming will be the first meeting between the two programs since 1956, when Saint Mary's scored a 73-53 road win against the Cowboys. This will be their first matchup against Wyoming on a neutral floor, as all three previous meetings took place in Laramie. Wyoming is coming off their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2002, as they were awarded an at-large bid to play in the First Four, where they eventually lost to Indiana.

Additional matchups in this year's Jerry Colangelo Classic feature Grand Canyon and North Texas (Dec. 10), USC and Colorado State (Dec. 21), and UC Santa Barbara and Appalachian State (Dec. 21).

The Jerry Colangelo Classic is one event in the Hall of Fame's series of collegiate events, which continues to grow in an effort to celebrate the game outside the museum walls. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to continue its relationship with LEARFIELD for sponsorship representation of its portfolio of collegiate events.

Tickets for the 2022 Jerry Colangelo Classic will go on pre-sale on Monday, July 25 and will be on-sale on Tuesday, July 26. Tickets will be available to purchase online at ticketmaster.com and in-person at the Footprint Center Box Office. Game times and television broadcast details will be released at a later date. Bouyea, Heat Agree to New Deal

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Former University of San Francisco guard Jamaree Bouyea has officially signed with the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association, the organization announced on Thursday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bouyea has appeared in six Summer League games (one start) with the Heat between the California Classic and the Las Vegas NBA2K23 Summer League while averaging 6.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.50 steals so far.

Capping off his career in grand fashion this past year, Bouyea guided the Dons to a 24-10 overall record and USF's first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997-98. At the conclusion of the season, he was named First Team All-WCC for the second year in a row while also being selected to the NABC District 9 First Team. Notably, Bouyea was also honored by being selected as a finalist for the Lou Henson Award, which honors the nation's top student-athlete at the mid major level.

In 2021-22, the Seaside native dominated throughout the season as the two-time WCC Player of the Week finished in the top five in the conference in total minutes (1,230, first), minutes per game (36.2, first), total field goals (219, second), steals (62, second), total points (587, third), points per game (17.3, third), three-point field goals made (72, fifth) and assists (135, fifth). Additionally, the versatile guard also finished in the top ten in total blocks (29, sixth), defensive rebounds (153, eighth) and free throws made (77, ninth).

After his five years in the green and gold, Bouyea left USF as one of the most accomplished athletes in program history as he is now the program's all-time wins leader (98 wins) alongside being first all-time in games played (160). Overall, he also ranks in the top six in program history in steals (208, third), assists (422, third), three-pointers attempted (531, fourth), field goals made (657, fifth), total points (1,718, fifth) and three-pointers made (179, sixth).

Santa Clara Broncos
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Jeff Alzina has been elevated to the head coach of the Santa Clara beach volleyball team, Bronco indoor volleyball head coach Erin Lindsey announced recently.

Alzina completed his third and fourth seasons, respectively, as an associate head coach with SCU indoor and beach volleyball while Lindsey headed both programs. The move will allow Alzina to focus solely on beach volleyball.

"It is an honor and privilege to lead this new era in Santa Clara Beach Volleyball," said Alzina. "I want to thank Coach Lindsey, Director of Athletics Renee Baumgartner and our Bronco administration for their faith and belief in not just me, but the potential of Bronco Beach volleyball. We've grown and improved at light speed the last couple of years, and this investment has paved the clear path for that success to continue."

MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 1, Houston Dynamo FC 2
Quakes’ home unbeaten streak snapped at eight

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Houston Dynamo FC 2-1 on Sunday evening at PayPal Park. The loss, which was San Jose’s first at home since the season opener on Feb. 26, snaps the club’s eight-match unbeaten streak at PayPal Park.

Following a scoreless first half, the Earthquakes broke through in the 53rd minute courtesy of team captain Jackson Yueill. Cristian Espinoza played a free kick into the box, which was headed goalward by Tommy Thompson. The slow, looping ball bounced off the crossbar before falling to Yueill for the first-timed finish.

Houston then scored the equalizer in the 71st minute.

San Jose appeared to re-gain the lead when Jeremy Ebobisse’s right-footed shot from close range beat goalkeeper Steve Clark, but a last-ditch goal-line clearance kept the score tied. Houston then took the lead moments later through Thor Ulfarsson.

Despite several opportunities to find an equalizer late in the match, the Quakes couldn’t find a second goal.

The Earthquakes will now prepare to host Spain’s RC Celta de Vigo in an international friendly on Wednesday, July 20. The match will kick off from PayPal Park at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO
On the mistakes committed tonight:
“I think the mistake [on the first goal] was an individual mistake, and on the second goal we had to keep the ball out when there wasn’t a clear moment to build up, and that’s it. I don’t think it was because we were building up in the back that Houston had those opportunities. I think we committed individual mistakes and that’s why it’s a very simple analysis today.”
On why he didn’t make more substitutions:
“When you look at the team that we finished with, we had Jebo [Jeremy Ebobisse], who has 11 goals. You have Jamiro [Monteiro], an amazing quality player. We tried to be more offensive by bringing Jackson [Yueill] back as a ‘six’ and putting in Jack Skahan in his place, and with Cade [Cowell] and Cristian [Espinoza] trying to find crosses or individual actions on top. Shea Salinas has a Covid situation. We missed Marcos Lopez [due to yellow card accumulation]. Judson is injured because he has an old injury bothering him. So that’s all we have.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER JAMIRO MONTEIRO
On what Houston did to shut San Jose’s midfield down:
“I didn’t feel like they were making it hard for me. They were really compact, so we didn’t have a lot of space in the midfield, but it wasn’t like they were hard on me. We didn’t have enough space in this game and a lot of our balls were coming from the side instead of the midfield.”
On how he will move past this result:
“I just forget this game. It already happened. We lost. Now we’re onto next week. We still have 14 games. Tomorrow is a new day. We have a new week, new chances. Every week is a new chance for us.”

11th goal of 2022

CARSON, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the LA Galaxy 3-2 on Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. The victory also sees San Jose earn back-to-back road wins over the LA Galaxy for the first time in the storied rivalry.

Moments after the ensuing kickoff, Jeremy Ebobisse doubled the team’s advantage with a right-footed shot from inside the 18-yard box. San Jose then pushed their lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute when Marcos Lopez played a give-and-go with Benji Kikanović, eluded goalkeeper Jonathan Bond, and scored from a narrow angle along the touchline.

The LA Galaxy began their comeback attempt with a goal by Dejan Joveljic just minutes into the second half before Joveljic added a second in the 88th minute. Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, Major League Soccer’s saves leader, made a season-high eight saves to close out the victory for San Jose.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO
On the 3-0 lead in the first half and adjusting to the remainder of the match:
“I think we played two different games today, one first half where we played amazing, one of the best halves that we have played during this season. Then in the second half I believed it was important to break that barrier physiologically. It’s our first win [on the road]. Yes, we were up 3-0 and played amazing, the Galaxy though made some substitutions right away in the second half and scored early. We knew that we had to suffer. We said at the beginning, we need to enjoy it to win it and suffer to win it. We suffered but we got the three points today. In the second half though I think we suffered too much and stopped playing a little bit.”

On what stood out in tonight’s performance and building off of this win:
“The players are the most important people playing here. They started with a lot of personality, we were able to circulate the ball and get in from behind. We were able to find and get in those pockets that the Galaxy allowed us to play in. Each game is different, and we have to prepare for the next one against Houston Dynamo FC. Sometimes we will be able to play like that and other times we will suffer a little bit more, but we need to try to play the way we did in the first half. In the second half, they [LA Galaxy] pushed us and we had JT [Marcinkowski] come up with those amazing saves again today. He is growing a lot and is also us defending crosses into the box. Tonight was phycological, it was important to get this victory.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD JEREMY EBOBISSE
On his thoughts on tonight’s match:
“I think the offensive transitions were sharp and people were decisive when it came time to make decisions, whether it was the decision to press out of our shape, the decision to engage a defender in the box, like in Benji [Kikanović]’s case, or whether Jamiro [Monteiro]’s pass and the weight of that pass understanding what was around him. I don’t think our buildup in the first half was where it’s been in other games. We struggled to break certain types of lines. But as team, our defensive line was excellent in the first half and made it difficult for them to play out and ultimately resulted in some good chances and some good combination of play throughout that half. Second half was a different story, but you know that when you are on the road against this team [LA Galaxy], that’s a better team than others, you know that they’re going to try to lead an onslaught opening up that second half. To concede a goal as early as we did was challenging and made it a little bit more difficult than we wanted, but I thought we managed the minute 60, 80, 83 pretty well, we started to suck some of the life out of the game to give them life again in the 85th minute when it was not what we needed but it’s a character moment for this team. I’ve seen this team come back from behind so many times about how many times we have seen us maintain the lead, no matter how secure we’re on the road, not many times since I’ve been here and definitely none this year. So it’s a step forward to build off from.”

On the coaching staff’s recent impact on the team:
“I think Alex [Covelo] and the coaching staff have worked really hard to put us in this position and they have given us license to go out and express ourselves, kind of caring on the foundation that was built on this club and it’s something that we appreciate. They are demanding but that’s only because they understand what we can do and achieve how high we can climb. For him to note our personality tonight is energizing, especially when we look at some key fixtures coming up. But the respect has to go back to the coaching staff because they have put in a ton of work and it’s been hard, it’s never easy coming in and transitioning, but we have been ready in basically every game we’ve played. It’s one step along the way, hopefully an energizing one, one that leads to more wins on the road and more security at home and then we’ll see where we can go from there. It’s one step at a time for myself, for the team, for us as individuals. We can’t get caught up in the success of tonight. We have work to do."

Oakland Trounces El Paso 4-0 at Laney College

Roots got off to a hot start on Saturday night at Laney College against Locomotive in its 22nd game of the season. In the 21st minute, winger Edgardo Rito received a long ball from deep and lasered a low cross into the path of Óttar Magnús Karlsson, who buried his shot home. It was Karlsson’s 14th of the season, good for the league’s top scorer.

10 minutes later Rito was at the races again, driving into El Paso’s box before getting dragged down by an El Paso defender. Óttar Magnús Karlsson buried the penalty for his 15th of the season.

Just two minutes later Rito was attacking down the right flank again, winning a 50/50 header, keeping the ball in play and delivering a sumptuous cross to a charging Dariusz Formella who followed up on his saved header from point blank range and giving the Roots their third of the evening.

Five minutes before the half ended, midfielder José Hernández pounced on a loose ball in El Paso’s half, took a couple touches and buried his shot into the upper corner pocket.

With victory all but secured, the second half played backdrop to cameos from reserve players from both sides. The game ended 4-0 to Oakland. Roots return to Laney College on Saturday, July 23rd to face the Las Vegas Lights.

Talking to Head Coach Juan Guerra
What fueled the players in this big win tonight?
We've been doing this many times and my speech stays the same. We're performance oriented. We created a lot of chances and the ball went in the back of the net. This is all because of the players and the hard work they put in — how resilient they are and how they believe in what we're doing.
Tonight was a complete performance — everyone understood what they needed to do. We adapted in a few ways and the boys did that well. The fans can go home happy tonight, the players go home happy. We know what we're capable of. I know what we have in that locker room. Now we need to keep pushing. It's only three points and we have to start thinking about the next game.

All four goal scoring opportunities were really good — pretty much unstoppable. What was it about tonight?
I respect and admire our boys. I do this because of how resilient and humble they are week in, week out. Even when results don't go our way or games where we don't do well — the boys wake up on Monday and show up to the training ground ready to work again. They tie their shoe laces, ask what we want them to do, and try to execute it. Tonight, what we worked on during the week was executed very well on the field offensively and defensively against a very good team in this league.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
Unprecedented Exhibition of Overall and Class Winners from 24 Hours of Le Mans Destined for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Historic Races Features Cars Spanning 1909 to 2007

MONTEREY, Calif., July 15, 2022—Ninety-nine years ago, a handful of employees at the French automobile company Chenard & Walcker, a major supplier of taxis in Paris, had a hope. A hope of racing their Type U3 15CV Sport in the inaugural marathon race called the 24 Hours Grand Prix of Endurance. In May, on a rain-soaked, muddy and rutted course on public roads, the French team finished 1-2, besting 32 others from the likes of Bentley, Bugatti and Delage.

Through the years after the race’s humble beginning, the 24 Hours of Le Mans evolved into a magnificent sports car spectacle that is equally respected and feared by competitors. It’s a unique balance of skill, luck, endurance, and an unwavering desire to excel by stepping beyond what one thinks he or she can do. For automakers and suppliers, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the ultimate high-speed technology testbed.

To honor the French Classic’s historic significance and to kick-off the yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a very special Le Mans Legends Heritage Display, presented by Motul, has been curated exclusively for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Aug. 17-20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The display features overall winners, class winners and interesting or significant cars that have raced over the century. These are the actual cars from museums and private collections that forever etched their place in history. While no longer raced, owners have been invited to take exhibition laps each day so they may enjoy their cars at a safe speed and to share the sights and sounds of these historic machines with everyone visiting.

Together with the cars racing in the four Le Mans-specific run groups, it is arguably the largest such gathering of authentic Le Mans cars ever assembled in America.

Among the incredibly diverse highlights are:
  • 1929 Bentley Speed Six - Driven by the original “Bentley Boys” to consecutive overall wins in 1929 and 1930
  • 1951 Porsche 356/2 063 - The very first Porsche entered in the 24 Hours and class winner
  • 1952 Mercedes 300SL W194 - The first German car ever to achieve an overall victory at Le Mans and is, to this day, the only Mercedes factory-built car to win Le Mans
  • 1955 Jaguar D-Type XKD - The 1956 overall winner, second of three consecutive overall wins for the D-Type
  • 1965 Ferrari 250 LM - The last Ferrari to capture overall honors in 1965
  • The original Ford GT40s that dominated by winning overall in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969
  • 1984 Mazda Lola T616 - The first class winner for Mazda
  • 2005 Audi R8 LMP1 – Overall winner and part of the string of Audi performance mastery
  • 2007 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP – The most recent overall winner displayed

Augmenting the 50-plus Le Mans cars in the display will be nearly 400 authentic, historic and period-correct racing cars competing in 14 race groups. Spanning from oldest to newest is the 1909 Locomobile Model “I” with its 40-horsepower engine, to the 2007 Pescarolo LMP1 that produces 700 horsepower. The range of cars—and they will be on track—truly is an evolution of motor racing history.

“Bringing the best of the best together for visitors to experience these incredible cars at speed is a mind-blowing experience,” said John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “These are not static displays, but moving museum treasures whose owners enjoy sharing.”

The four-day celebration, which begins on Wednesday, Aug. 17 and concludes on Saturday, Aug. 20, is preceded by two days of the Monterey Pre-Reunion, Aug. 13 and 14, where many of the same cars compete.

Some seats still may be purchased in the Legends Club VIP Pavilion (formerly the Flagroom). The Legends Club comes with expansive views from high atop Turn 1 and features catering by local favorites Baja Cantina and Turn 12. Camping, car corrals, and individual and multi-day ticket packages are available by visiting WeatherTechRaceway.com or by calling the tickets and accommodations specialists at 831-242-8200.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
