TWO-PRONGED UNICORNS

The Extraordinary Comes to Oracle

The unicorn continues to hold a place in popular culture, as a symbol of fantasy and as an extremely wild woodland creature; a symbol of purity and grace whose horn has the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness. Now, from a place unknown, a family of two-pronged unicorns graces the outfield greenery of Oracle Park, occasionally observed on days off or in the early A.M. hours. A true only-in-San Francisco phenomenon, they are here to infuse the Giants with the power and
ferocity of the wild.

The Giants are ready.

Letters to the Editor

Exquisite Coverage
While the San Francisco Bay Area is reveling over our beloved Golden State Warriors’ fourth title in eight years, no one delved as deeply into this accomplishment as did Pete Elman, a sports chronicler for the last two-plus decades.

His article in last week’s Sports Today revealed the guts of their triumph, the hills they climbed and the resistance they met from naysayers, past teammates and the misbegotten media.

The Warriors win on Celtics' ground on Thursday, June 16th, was their greatly deserved reward; a reward for their trust in each other, the mutual respect they share, the talent they possess and for the outstanding leadership they have.

If you haven’t read Mr. Elman’s column, It is not too late! Here's the link: It Was More Than Just A Game, by Pete Elman

Grab Some Pine, Meat!
Thanks for that clever feature on Grove Market in Pacific Grove in the June 13th issue (#437) and the very appropriate Mike Krukow reference. https://conta.cc/3xLYKrp

After Kruk chalks up a Giants opponent's strike-out with his signature "Grab Some Pine, Meat," the victim can head to Grove Market for the meat and the pine, where owner Charlie Higuera, at 85, will be happy to fill the order.

I've been there many times and agree, it's a great deli-plus, and sports talk fills the air year-round. That's a cool HQ for Sports Today -- well played. Krukow Country on the Monterey Peninsula!

Say hi to Kristie when you go -- she's the QB there!

Cal Trio On 2023 College Football Hall Of Fame Ballot

IRVING, Texas – Tony Gonzalez, Marshawn Lynch and Ron Rivera are on the 2023 ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame announced Monday by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. The Cal trio is looking to join 22 Golden Bears already enshrined in the esteemed Hall with Steve Bartkowski's induction in the Class of 2012 the most recent.

"It's an enormous honor to just be on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot considering more than 5.54 million people have played college football and only 1,056 players have been inducted," said NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hall's requirement of being a first-team All-American creates a much smaller pool of about 1500 individuals who are even eligible. Being in today's elite group means an individual is truly among the greatest to have ever played the game, and we look forward to announcing the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame class early next year."

Gerhart On 2023 HOF Ballot

IRVING, Texas – Legendary Stanford running back Toby Gerhart is on the 2023 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced on Monday. Gerhart is one of 80 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision on the ballot, along with 96 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks. Gerhart aims to become Stanford's 20th inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame after Andrew Luck gets inducted later in 2022.

Winner of the Doak Walker Award and runner up for the Heisman Trophy in 2009, Gerhart was a unanimous first team All-American after rushing for 1,871 yards and 29 touchdowns. He earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year honors and is Stanford's all-time leader in career rushing touchdowns, with 44.

A 2010 graduate with his bachelor's degree in management science and engineering, Gerhart returned to The Farm to earn his master's of business administration from Stanford in 2020. A two-time All-Pac-10 Academic Team honoree, Gerhart earned the 2010 Al Masters Award from Stanford, given to the Cardinal athlete attaining the highest standards of athletics performance, leadership and academic achievement. Gerhart was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the 2010 draft and played with the Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars through 2015.

Saint Mary's College Gaels
Kuhse Agrees to Play in NBA Summer League
with Orlando Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. — According to multiple sources, Tommy Kuhse has agreed to play in the NBA Summer League with the Orlando Magic. Following the conclusion of the 2022 NBA Draft, Kuhse is the first Gael to sign with an NBA organization for the Summer League.

Breaking out into a leading role on the Gaels over his final two seasons, Kuhse capped off his Saint Mary's career by being named the West Coast Conference's Sixth Man of the Year, in addition to First Team All-WCC honors. He joined the 1,000-point club at Saint Mary's and finishes his career 26th overall in points scored (1,138), fifth in assists (477), ninth in steals (119), and as the program's all-time leader in games played (149).

His performance on the court continued to rise throughout his collegiate career, culminating in his final two seasons, where he averaged 12.4 points per game over his final 58 games. He maintained his excellence in the classroom simultaneously, continuing to lock up WCC All-Academic honors as a senior, and most likely again as a graduate student this season.

Kuhse is the first Gael to join an NBA program in any capacity since Jordan Ford and Malik Fitts both were scooped up in the summer of 2020. Fitts eventually made it to the NBA and played the 2021-22 NBA season with the Boston Celtics, champions of the Eastern Conference.

USF Dons
Jamaree Bouyea scored 14 points as the Dons defeated the Davidson Wildcats, 65-60, on Nov. 13, 2021 at Chase Center.
Bouyea Signs Summer League Deal
with Miami Heat

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Jamaree Bouyea, a three-time All-WCC selection, officially signed a Summer League contract with the Miami Heat following the 2022 NBA Draft on Thursday evening.

"Jamaree is a tremendous basketball story," said current USF men's basketball coach Chris Gerlufsen. "To go from virtually no Division I scholarship offers to now putting himself in a position to play in the NBA is truly remarkable. It is a testament to his work ethic and who he is as a person. Our entire university and basketball program here at USF could not be more proud of him."

Bouyea will join the Heat, who finished first overall in the Eastern Conference in 2021-22 with a 53-29 record under head coach Erik Spoelstra. Capping off his five-year career on the Hilltop with an NCAA Tournament appearance this past spring, Bouyea becomes the first Don to sign a professional contract since Frankie Ferrari and Nate Renfro in 2019.
Santa Clara Broncos
NEW YORK, N.Y. - It's official! Jalen Williams, a two-time All-WCC selection, has become Santa Clara men's basketball's 27th NBA Draft pick after being selected 12th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft. Williams becomes the program's fourth first round selection and the first overall selection since Steve Nash was taken 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 1996.

Williams is the program's highest drafted prospect of the modern era and the second-highest drafted prospect in program history behind only Ken Sears, who went fourth overall in 1955. He is also the first first-round draft pick from a West Coast Conference program, outside of Gonzaga, since 2001 (Pepperdine's Brandon Armstrong).

Williams turned heads with his performance at the NBA Combine to shoot up teams' draft boards. This, of course, came on the heels of what would prove to be his best season of his three-year collegiate career with the Broncos. His 2021-22 campaign was one to remember with the sharpshooter establishing himself as one of the premier athletes in the WCC. He earned first team All-WCC honors after averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He was the only player in the nation to average those numbers while also shooting 56 percent from 2-point range and 41 percent from beyond the arc. Williams finished the season with 594 points, the eighth-most in a single season in program history.

Williams joins the elite company of Ken Sears (4th in 1955), Bud Ogden (13th in 1969) and Steve Nash (15th in 1996) as first round selections to come out of Santa Clara.

Baseball is truly a game of stats.

Over the next few weeks I'm going with mostly obscure stats one would probably not discuss between innings at a ball game...

What player holds the record for being hit by a pitch during his career and how many?

Hint: He played for the Baltimore Orioles when the franchise was in the NL and for other teams as well. He was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame for much more than this in 1945.

Roots take down Atlanta, 3-1

It was Soul Night at Laney College, where Oakland celebrated its new women’s soccer team, Oakland Soul. Special game day jerseys will be auctioned off to raise funds for gender justice and reproductive rights. After a scoreless first half, goals from Mikael Johnsen, Óttar Magnús Karlsson and Johnny Rodriguez paved the way for an Oakland win against Atlanta United 2.

Roots took the lion’s share of the possession early on and peppered the United net with shots. Forward Charlie Dennis had three big chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.

In the second half, it only took four minutes for the Roots to notch one; defender Emrah Klimenta played a ball out wide to Memo Diaz who curled a cross into the far post. Mikael Johnsen, for his first goal of the season, headed it home. Atlanta responded ten minutes later when they cut through the Roots defense and put one past goalkeeper Paul Blanchette tying the game at one apiece.

In the 73’ minute on a Roots counterattack, Mikael Johnsen was pulled down by an Atlanta defender in the penalty box. Ottar Magnus Karlsson dispatched it with ease for his league-leading 11th goal of the season. Thirteen minutes later, Johnny Rodriguez scored off a breakaway to ice the game and cement the win.

Roots continue their playoff quest with a trip down south to Los Angeles where they play the LA Galaxy II on Friday, July 1st.

Talking to Head Coach Juan Guerra: Very important win tonight. What was your message to the team before the game?
Juan Guerra: I told the guys this week that we're going to put ourselves in a position that we have a necessity to get the three points. The boys put in a good shift tonight. We could've put the game away earlier but it was a good game. A lot of things we worked on during the week out on the field; as a coach, that's all I can ask for. We put together a game plan, we give the players information and over the week it becomes knowledge, and then we see if we can execute it on game day. Today was a positive day for us.

How'd you want the team to react in the second half after having four big chances in the first half but ending it scoreless?
Juan Guerra: The boys reacted as we wanted to. They started the second half as we finished the first one: on the front foot, running behind and taking shots. At some point, when you don't put teams away and you have these young guys that are very talented, technically gifted — you're going to get burned. It was good for us — we have to keep learning and pushing forward.

Bill Warner to Serve as Chief Steward for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Group Stewards Announced

MONTEREY, Calif., June 22, 2022—The hallmark of the annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is car authenticity, period correctness, provenance, and well-mannered driving. Part of its success rests on the expertise and guidance of group stewards, who also drive in the event.

Expanding the stewardship program to provide further support this year will be Bill Warner, founder of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and a member of the Monterey Motorsports Advisory Council, who will serve in the newly established role of Chief Steward.

“The goal is to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience where the car is the star,” Warner says. “The stewards are the eyes and ears of the group, class historians who are passionate about the era of car and the spirit of historic car racing. Their knowledge of the cars in their group, as they ran in period and as they are configured today, is critical in verifying historical significance, authenticity and period correctness. They also know that there’s nothing to win but the pleasure of driving well and sharing their car with automobile enthusiasts. Besides, retirement doesn’t suit me.”

Warner is an accomplished driver himself. He has frequently been behind the wheel of his ex-Bob Tullius’ Group 44 1971 Triumph TR6 and TR8. He has raced in multiple Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunions and won the Presidential Award. Additionally, he was co-grand marshal with Dr. Wolfgang Porsche at Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI in 2018 and is a member of the Road Racing Drivers Club.

Warner will work closely with the following participants who were selected for their knowledge, enthusiasm and desire to keep the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the top of its class in featuring the best cars and drivers.

2022 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Group Stewards:
Jonathan Feiber, 1955-1969 Saloon

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
