Third string quarterback C.J. Beathard (#3) replaced second-string quarterback Nick Mullens late in the game, as the San Francisco 49ers tried to righten the ship and catch the Philadelphia Eagles at Levi's Stadium on Sunday evening, Oct. 4. Their pursuit was unsuccessful and the Niners fell to the visitors, 25-20, to drop to 2-2 in the early season. Mullens had replaced first string quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, out with an injury, but was ineffective for most of the game. Mullens committed three turnovers, including losing a fumble on a strip sack and throwing an interception which was returned for a TD. Beathard, pictured above with fullback Kyle Juszczyk in an earlier game against the Los Angeles Rans, led a late TD drive and got the Niners to the Eagles 33 before his desperation pass fell short in the end zone as time expired. George Kittle had an outstanding game, with a career-high 15 catches for 183 yards and a score to lead the Niners. The 49ers remain at home for a matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Levi's Stadium starting at 1:05 p.m.

Total Team Win Sends A's to ALDS
It was a total team effort for the Green & Gold on Thursday in Oakland, as the A's secured a 6-4 win over the White Sox in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series. The team will face the Houston Astros in the AL Division Series beginning on
Monday, October 5.
"It's really a close-knit group that’s been together for a few years," manager Bob Melvin said. "It's a team that expects to win. When we came into Spring Training this year, we expected to be in this spot. That's part of the battle. It's not easy to do. You have to have a little confidence to have success, and that’s built up the last couple of years and finally broke through this year."

Pablo Sandoval, third baseman, Atlanta Braves
"The Panda." From Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Who transforms pink bubblegum into spherical works of art and makes a cross in the dirt with the handle end of his bat during each approach of home plate. In the hearts of many Bay Area sports fans, this switch-hitting third baseman will forever be a San Francisco Giant. Originally a catcher, Sandoval was signed in 2002 by the Giants during a scouting tournament in the Dominican Republic. In addition to seeing duty behind the plate, he played first base and third base from 2004 to 2008 in the Giants' minor league system. The call up to San Francisco came from the Giants on August 13, 2008, and teammate Barry Zito soon gave Sandoval the nickname "Kung Fu Panda," after the popular DreamWorks Animation movies. Sandoval continued playing defense at the same three positions and was named the Opening Day starting third baseman on the Giants' 2009 roster. In 2011, he was selected to his first National League All-Star team and hit a ground-rule double which assisted in the victory for the National League. His heroics continued in the following year's Midsummer Classic when Sandoval hit a bases-loaded triple off of American League pitcher Justin Verlander in the 2012 All-Star Game. But The Panda was not yet finished with the Detroit Tiger. A few months later, during the 2012 World Series, Sandoval hit three home runs, two of them off of pitches thrown by Verlander. The final out of the 2014 World Series was a high, pop foul that Sandoval caught, securing his third World Series ring with the Giants. As a free agent the following off-season, Sandoval signed with the Boston Red Sox for 2015 and in the summer of 2017, he signed for a second time with the Giants. In 2020, The Panda bid a final farewell to San Francisco, and signed with the Atlanta Braves, who will battle the Miami Marlins this week in the 2020 NLDS.

Rudi Petschek, a treasured member of the USG family, has reached back to his Argentinian childhood for memories of motor racing, which then ruled the land and brought grand legends to life. Pictured above are national heroes Oscar Galvez (left) and Juan Fangio and below is an excerpt from Driving at the Slowest Possible Speed, authored by Rudi, which recounts a highlight from the longest auto race ever run. (The year was 1948 and five participants died.

Driving at the Slowest Possible Speed
by Rudi Petschek
(The snippet below picks up at the finish of the Gran Premio
de la America del Sur, the longest auto race ever run...)
Meanwhile, Oscar's car (Oscar Galvez) had stopped, surrounded by a large pool of oil. He received push-and-tow assistance; then coasted the final downhill stretch toward Caracas, crossing the finish line pushed by a private car with barely thirteen minutes to spare. The jubilant crowd mobbed Oscar's car, extracted their idol and jubilantly carried him away aloft.
An official who happened to lean against the car noticed the hood was cold. He asked whether Oscar raced with special water? It wasn't about Oscar getting push- and-tow assistance, as earlier in the race he, as well as several others, had profited similarly without consequences. But the rules stated that cars must cross the finish line under their own power, and Oscar's had obviously not.
Oscar was nowhere to be found. Acompanante promptly started the engine to prove it still ran. He then drove the car back a short distance, returning across the finish line under its own power with barely moments to spare. But the rules also stated that the driver himself, not a substitute, must be at the wheel. Oscar, the crowd's idol, was disqualified.
Marimon crossed the finish yelling, “I came in second! I came in second!” before being told he had won the race and its huge prize equivalent to twelve brand new automobiles. Despite Fords having dominated the race from start to finish, except for Stage 5 won by Fangio, Chevrolets filled eight of the first ten positions, including the win and second place. Marimon later acknowledged not having deserved to win, but noted that he had lost many races he deserved to have won. He honored an agreement struck with Fangio beforehand, to share equally all expenses as well as all rewards.
|
|
Oscar's car was mobbed as he crossed the final line
When Oscar was informed of his disqualification he was distraught. Appeals were made, but the rules would not yield. He never overcame having lost the most important race of his career after having dominated it from start to finish, a race which to this day remains the most famous in Argentina's motor racing history.
|
|
This is how the two-door sedan of Oscar and Juan Gálvez remained after their tip-over in the Gran Premio of 1938. The incredible thing is that they righted the sedan and continued with the race stage. (It was the Gálvez brothers first big wreck. Photo from the Gálvez family’s private collection.)
His nephew Ricardo (Oscar's) wrote: “But I want to state clearly what kind of a person Oscar was. During the race he was awarded an emerald by the Peruvian president in recognition of his achievements. Considering it a disproportionate gift, he decided to raffle it among his peers. The lucky winner was popular Tadeo Taddia. The Venezuelan Touring Club, attempting to compensate Oscar for his sorrow, organized a collection that raised a sum equivalent to what Oscar had lost. He refused to accept it and donated it all to the poverty stricken children of Venezuela. Without a doubt, Oscar was the moral champion of the event, and also...a Gentleman of Life.”

Fan Controlled Football (FCF)--
The Time Is Now
by Andy Dolich
|
|
For the past three years I have been part of the management group at Project Fanchise which created Fan Controlled Football (FCF).
Our team has worked on synthesizing the best of sports from yesterday and today into creating tomorrow. On September 22 FCF became the only professional sports league which enables fans to call the plays for their favorite team in real time. The Inaugural FCF season begins in February, 2021.
I understand the need for cardboard cutout fans and ambient noise piped into the Covid coliseums and arenas in today's world. FCF has focused on creating a more interactive and immersive fully engaged environment for fans who are the fuel of spectator sports, even if they can’t visit the venues which their teams play in. We have placed the stands into the fan’s hands.
FCF’s premiere season will feature four teams stacked with pro-caliber athletes battling it out over a six-week schedule and will be live-streamed exclusively on Twitch, a premier, live, interactive streaming service with content that spans gaming, sports, entertainment, music and more.
“We are pushing for more immersive sports which will be a seismic shift in the worlds of sport and entertainment," said Sohrob Farudi, co-founder and CEO of Fan Controlled Football. “For the first time in sports history, fans call the shots for their team, from team branding, player selection, and real-time play calling, which is decided by the fans. This is the future of sports and we're excited to co-create history with the fans."
|
|
FCF has an array of heavyweights involved, including Quavo, Mike Tyson, Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, Greg Miller and Twitch
FCF has partnered with some of the most impactful names and personalities in the world of sport and culture as team owners. Hip hop mogul Quavo of Migos is joining NFL Super Bowl champions Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch, world boxing champion Mike Tyson, YouTube and podcast empire Kinda Funny (led by Greg Miller), and some of the biggest content creators from Twitch's community.
"We are building a brand and something different in our league – with our fans. They are in control and get to pick the team names, colors, logos, and more," said Quavo. "I'm really excited because FCF is fast-paced, high-scoring 7-on-7 football and fans are in control. You go from sitting on the couch watching TV and pressing buttons on the remote to actually pressing the buttons on the plays."
Combining the passion of live sports, the competitiveness of fantasy sports, interactivity of video games, and the global reach of esports all into a live-streamed, real-life experience, FCF is the first professional sports league to place fans in the general manager’s role. Using a custom Twitch Extension, FCF has developed an innovative interactive video overlay for desktop and mobile, allowing fans to call the plays natively on top of the Twitch video player. As the first professional sports league to be fully integrated with Twitch, FCF has an exclusive, multi-season agreement that will bring FCF to Twitch's community of millions of global fans.
Michael Aragon, SVP of Content at Twitch, said, "FCF is breaking new ground by giving fans the ability to literally be a part of the game and we're thrilled to partner with the league for what will be a defining moment, not just in football but for the sports industry at large."
Featuring elite athletes from NCAA Division I and II programs, the CFL, XFL and IFL, Fan Controlled Football is a fast-paced, high-scoring 7-vs-7 style of football played on a 35-yard x 50-yard field with 10-yard end zones. The six-week season begins in February 2021, with four regular-season weeks, playoff week and the Championship designed for the digital audience and held at FCF's state-of-the-art facility in Atlanta. Each game will be 60 minutes in length and live streamed on Twitch.

Quavo brings it home...
Fans can register at www.FCF.io to align with their favorite team owner, then start building the teams from the ground up. Throughout the season ramp-up, fans will have the opportunity to determine team names, colors, logos, uniforms, hire team coaches and other team branding and building opportunities.
During the season fans will help determine which players make the roster via a weekly fan-run draft, call plays in real-time, make the calls on rule changes and more.
FCF is backed by industry-leading venture partners who are helping drive the innovation and ideas of the future. FCFs lead investor, Lightspeed Venture Partners, is at the forefront of launching technology and interactive consumer companies, including Snapchat, Blue Nile, and Epic Games. Verizon Ventures invests in entrepreneurs connecting society and furthering the 5G future. Correlation Ventures, Basecamp Fund, and Next10 Ventures are participating, as well as sports and technology industry veterans Dave Finocchio, co-founder at Bleacher Report, and Alexis Ohanian, co-Founder at Reddit.

Are you still skeptical on how this works?
In 2017, the concept of fan controlled sports took flight when Project FANchise purchased an expansion franchise in the Indoor Football League and immediately let the fans started running the show. The fans shaped the new franchise from the ground up as they picked the city (Salt Lake City) and team name, the Screaming Eagles. They designed the team's logo, uniforms and voted on which players made the final roster. Once the Screaming Eagles took the field, the fans called every offensive play through the team's mobile application and directly on Twitch, the Amazon-owned streaming platform which brought the team to a worldwide audience.
Fans from more than 100 countries called plays and guided the Screaming Eagles' offense to a top three spot in the league rankings as the team's quarterback, Verlon Reed, took home IFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. The Screaming Eagles and their fans earned their place in history by proving the concept of fan controlled sports. And now, Fan Controlled Football (FCF) will take it to the next level.

Football Schedule Released:
Cal faces ASU in Crossover Game
|
|
By Dave Bush
The Pac-12 announced the abbreviated 2020 football schedule Saturday morning and in a mild surprise, Cal will play at Arizona State in their lone matchup with the South Division. It was expected in many quarters that Cal’s scheduled game against the South would be either USC or UCLA.
The Big Game will be the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 27 in Berkeley.
The Cal season opens at home against Washington on Nov. 7, followed by the trip to ASU on Nov. 14, at Oregon State Nov. 21, the Big Game on the 27th, Oregon at home Dec. 5, and at Washington State Dec. 12. Starting times and the television schedule will be announced later. Not playing one or both of the LA schools interrupts at least one of Cal’s longest rivalries. The matchups against USC began in 1912 and UCLA games date back to 1934.
The seventh game, a crossover matchup against a team from the South on the weekend of Dec. 18-19, will be announced that week.
In a news release, Cal said: “Under current guidelines from both the state of California and the conference, no fans will be permitted to events on Pac-12 campuses out of health and safety concerns, although the policy will be revisited by the Pac-12 in January for future events, should conditions allow.”
The conference schedule includes eight Friday games along with the Championship Game set to take place on a Friday evening. The road team for the regular season Friday games is assured of a home game the preceding week. Updated tie-breaking procedures for determining division champions and Football Championship Game participants for the 2020 season will be finalized in the near future.
Every game through the first six weeks of the season will be televised nationally by a combination of ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox and FS1. Fox will televise the Football Championship game on Friday, Dec. 18.
Cal’s 2020 Schedule
Sat., Nov. 7 – Washington
Sat., Nov. 14 – at Arizona State
Sat., Nov. 21 – at Oregon State
Fri., Nov. 27 – Stanford
Sat., Dec. 5 – Oregon

Who Am I?
49ers cornerback K'Waun Williams
|
|
In 2014, the Cleveland Browns signed K'Waun Williams to a two-year, $930,000 contract. On August 29, 2016, after a dispute regarding an ankle injury, the Browns waived Williams and the Chicago Bears claimed K'Waun off of waivers.
However, the contract was voided after Williams failed a physical due to his ankle injury. On November 3, 2016, Williams underwent surgery to remove the bone spurs and after being medically cleared following surgery, received contract offers from multiple teams, including the New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers.
On February 21, 2017 the 49ers signed Williams to a one-year, $615,000 contract with a signing bonus of $75,000. (He was reunited with San Francisco 49ers' defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley who was his position coach at Cleveland and at Pitt.) Head coach Kyle Shanahan named Williams the first-team nickelback to start the regular season. On September 29, 2017, the San Francisco 49ers signed Williams to a three-year, $8.85 million contract extension with $4.25 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $3 million.
