U.S. OPEN TOILETGATE: Give US a Break!
Since when did player bathroom breaks at a tennis match include lunch, phone calls (to a coach?) and maybe a new wardrobe? Since Stefanos Tsitsipas decided they did. His opponent in one match, Andy Murray, was not pleased as Tsitsipas' "bathroom break" went over eight minutes.

Murray complained to the chair umpire, "It's never once taken me that long to go to the toilet, ever." He then barked "GET UP!" when Tsitsipas finally returned and then sat on his bench for a sip of water.

Murray tweeted the next day: "Fact of the day. It takes Stefanos Tsitsipas twice as long to go to the bathroom as it takes Jeff Bazos to fly into space. Interesting."

Tsitsipas denied any accusations of illegal activity.

Memo to Tsitsipas: Unless the purpose of your extended bathroom break is to FINALLY GET VACCINATED, which you have refused to do, just use the toilet for the purpose for which it is intended, and hurry it up! There are fans in the stands who paid to watch a tennis match, not wait for you to visit your "magical world."

A Wild Ride Down The Stretch

By Bruce Macgowan
Yes it’s true. The Giants as they say, “Are for real!”

If this past weekend’s series with rival LA wasn’t proof enough, then nothing could be.

I was fortunate enough to go all three games vs. the Dodgers and for the first time I can remember in five years, there was an intense playoff atmosphere at San Francisco’s beautiful waterfront park.

The tension was thick. The emotions were high. The action on the field was tight, just as it should be when two long time rivals are going at it for the top spot in the division.

Most of us who have watched a lot of baseball knew that this past weekend was going to be the moment of truth for the Giants. Would this be the series where they were proven to be a fluke, that they were going to be easy pickings for a much stronger and impressive LA team?

The crowds at these games reminded me of a rollicking college football game. Say, Cal-Stanford big game; lots of fans from either side filling the park to the brim, chanting slogans, waving wildly and jumping around like a bunch of excited kids. It’s true, baseball as one famous ballplayer said years ago, “Brings out the little kid in you.”

After squandering numerous opportunities in the first game the Giants finally eked out an extra inning thriller when Buster Posey’s ground ball was misplayed by the normally reliable LA second baseman Trea Turner and the winning run scored. Game over, 3-2 Giants but it took 11 excruciating innings.

Because the Giants starting rotation was short-staffed, Giants’ skipper Gabe Kapler was forced to go with ‘bullpen games’ both Saturday and Sunday nights. LA easily won Saturday’s game as Lefty ace Julio Urias and the Dodger bullpen shut down the Giants, sending them reeling to their sixth loss in eight games. In those six losses, the Giants, who have hit over 200 homers this season, did not hit a single one.

LA’s lineup is full of all-stars; Justin Turner, Cody Bellinger, Trea Turner, Cody Seager, and Mookie Betts.

The Giants? Come on, let’s be real. Does anyone, especially baseball fans around the country, really believe a virtually anonymous team of journeymen, rookies and a few old vets were going to win the decisive game Sunday?

LA went with Giant-killer Walker Buehler in game three. The hard throwing righty was 7-0 lifetime against the Giants, and had won ten in a row.
September 5, 2021; San Francisco, CA; A fan holds up a sign as San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford (35) prepares to bat during the fifth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park. Photo by Darren Yamashita.

But hey, no problem! Brandon Belt jolted a first inning home run to the deepest part of the ballpark, about a 425-foot blast. That must have awakened the national audience watching ESPN’s Sunday night marquee matchup.

The next inning obscure Giants’ right fielder Steve Duggar, just called up from Triple A Sacramento, ripped a two run triple into the right field corner. Pinch hitter Darin Ruf, another one of Gabe Kapler’s bench favorites, then punched an RBI single to drive in Duggar and suddenly it was 4-1. Brandon Crawford and backup catcher Curt Casali ripped run-scoring hits to knock in two more in the third, making it a short, unhappy day of work for Mr. Buehler. Perhaps he should have been like that movie character Ferris Buehler, and taken the day off!

Meanwhile, Kapler had to rely on eight relievers to shut down LA. Zach Littell retired three in a row with two on and none out in the second inning. Camilo Dotel, also just up from Triple A, struck out slugger Chris Taylor in the fifth inning with the bases loaded. Then Tony Watson and Tyler Rogers retired six straight, giving Jake McGee the opportunity to save his 30th game.

It was anything but routine. A mighty two-run pinch hit homer by the great veteran Albert Pujols and a single by Max Muncy brought the thousands of Dodger fans suddenly to their feet. Nail-biting time.

Now LA had the tying run at the plate. But McGee stiffened, striking out Mookie Betts on a generous call from home plate umpire Tony Randazzo. Then with the tension dripping and virtually every fan screaming for the kill, McGee secured a pulsating win getting the dangerous Turner to hit a deep foul fly that right fielder Mike Yastrzemski tracked down for the final out. The Giants won the season series and once again had first place all to themselves.

How will the next three weeks play out? One thing is certain, this team of overachieving ‘no-names’ is not going down without a knock down, drag out fight. The mighty Dodgers certainly learned that this past weekend.

Alphabet Soup of a Ballpark

By Andy Dolich
Anyone paying attention to the Oakland A’s ballpark saga has tried to follow the confusing path of chutes and ladders, ups and downs, breakthroughs and breakdowns and what happens next in the Athletics’ ongoing search for a new place to play baseball.

How do we make sense of all the letters, anagrams, words and phrases in the Alphabet Soup of a ballpark solution which has been written about, quoted, surmised, negotiated, hypothesized by the A’s, Major League Baseball, Oakland City Council, Alameda County Supervisors, State of California, environmental groups, A’s President Dave Kaval, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred with local and national media outlets covering every bit of news from Oakland to Las Vegas and beyond.

I attempted to alphabetize the key letters that may define the ballpark future of the Oakland A’s.

A -- A’s -- 53 years and counting at the Coliseum. Four World Series titles, six AL titles, 17 West Division titles, multiple home-grown All-Star talent, Hall of Famers, Billy Ball and Moneyball.

B -- Ballpark -- When and where will a new one be built?

C-- Coliseum -- The A’s say it doesn’t fit their vision of an urban ballpark.

D -- Dome -- How much is a Dome Home going to cost in Las Vegas? A billion dollars plus? Will it be 100% privately financed? By who, how and by when?

E -- EIR -- Environmental Impact Report -- Is the full EIR MIA?

F -- Fans -- 77 million A’s fans have come through the turnstiles at the Coliseum since it opened.

G -- Gondola -- Still up in the air as a people mover from downtown Oakland to the Howard Terminal ballpark site. How much? Is it in the project definition of 100% privately financed?

H -- Howard Terminal -- 55 acres within the Port of Oakland as the location for their vision of the future.

I -- Investment -- $12 billion dollar project at Howard Terminal. Who are the A’s investment partners?

J -- John Fisher -- A’s owner who chooses not to speak publicly about his end game.

K -- Kaval -- A’s President Dave Kaval, leading the Ballpark project.

L -- Lease -- Do the A’s have a legal document defining their lease rights to the 55 acres of land where the stadium will be built at Howard Terminal? Are we talking 45 or 20 years?
What will be the A's new reality: Howard Terminal...
or Metropolitan Las Vegas, NV?

M -- Media -- every journalist worth their ink is trying to keep up with this unfolding story.

N -- NUBC-What’s a New Urban Ballpark City? What elements get built and by when? Ballpark, Housing, Retail, Performing Arts Center, Parking, Public Park, Ingress and Egress.

O -- One Hundred Percent privately financed. Has John Fisher defined and signed off on what 100% means in terms of the project?

P -- Parallel Paths. A’s are looking at Howard Terminal and Las Vegas on equal footing for a new ballpark, according to Dave Kaval.

Q -- Questions. Only hundreds remain in the minds of those following the story without definitive answers.

R -- Railroads right of way. How are we getting over, under or through the Union Pacific and BART tracks that cutoff downtown from the Howard Terminal ballpark site?

S -- Schnitzer Steel -- Mega shredder and metal recycler at Howard Terminal for decades.

T -- Tax Increment Financing -- TIF -- A value capture revenue tool that uses taxes on future gains in real estate values to pay for new infrastructure improvements.

U -- Unity seems to be lacking when it comes to the A’s and their ongoing negotiations with the city and county on the ballpark plan at Howard Terminal and ownership of the Coliseum site.

V -- Vegas. 41st largest media market in the USA. The San Francisco Bay Area is sixth. “20 great ballpark locations in Southern Nevada” but only Howard Terminal in the Bay Area.

W -- When will there be some resolution for a new ballpark?

X -- X factor. What or who will make all the moving pieces come together in the real world?

Y -- You. What’s your thinking on what will happen next?

Z -- Zito, Barry has nothing to do with any of this but I was stumped for a Z.

And now you know your ABCs when it comes to the Oakland A’s ongoing quest for a new ballpark.

I'm tired of baseball.

My team, the Boston Red Sox, is collapsing and may not even make the playoffs. Even more importantly, the Sox could be the bellwether for teams being heavily impacted by COVID. The Sox are up to 12 cases at this writing...

With that said, let's tawk SF/Bay Area football.

Jerry Rice was the first San Francisco 49er to score 1,000 points in a 49ers career (1985-2000). Who has the second highest point total for the 49ers?

A’s Future Uncertain as 2021 Season Coming to
an End

By Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
The 2021 season is soon coming to an end. The hopes of the Athletics advancing into the playoffs are still depending on the last 30 games or so, when it all will be decided. But the future of the A’s in Oakland might not be decided in the next 30 days. That seems more unclear.

The latest: Alameda County said it is not ready to deliver a vote in September. Without their vote (County of Alameda) and their share of taxes revenue, the Oakland city officials have said that not enough money would be generated from the city’s share alone in order to cover the infrastructure costs. The County wants the City of Oakland and the A’s to agree before.

The vote is now delayed or maybe it will never take place. Dave Kaval, President of the Oakland A’s, who has now been involved in this endeavor for years said: “We have been speaking to the County of Alameda and we are trying to do our part. At the end of the day it’s a binary decision. They will be involved or not,” and added as he received the letter, “I was startled to receive that and it appears it’s a no go.”

Kaval continues to say that the Athletics organization is working on two different plans, the one to keep the A’s in Oakland and continuing to research a location for the team in Las Vegas. Back in April (when the baseball season was just starting) the A’s asked the city to create two infrastructure financing districts. Together they include pedestrian bridges, traffic upgrades for fans to make it to the ballpark as well as a village for 3,000 homes, hotels, offices, and performing arts space for parks.

From these plans the Oakland A’s were counting on getting reimbursed $844 million over 45 years in bond money for all the infrastructure they would pay upfront. Libby Schaff, the Mayor of Oakland, recently said (for ? times) she believes the team will stay in Oakland.

So…around and around it goes, where does it stops, nobody knows.
Historical note: Back in the 1930s, when radio was king, a young 22-year-old actor by the name of Orson Welles was the star in The Shadow, an iconic radio show where Welles was a Super Crime Fighter. A very famous and quotable line from the show: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows…”

Tampa Bay Rowdies 3
Fall to 2020 Eastern Conference Champion Rowdies
on the Road

Roots traveled to Florida this week for their third interdivisional game of the season, this time against 2020 Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Rowdies. After a pregame storm, the match was underway. Tampa Bay dominated possession early and held it for most of the first half. Goalkeeper Taylor Bailey saw his first start in over a month and was put to work early. Tampa had a total of 15 shots in the first half with seven of them on target. Bailey made save after save until the Rowdie’s captain Sebastián Guenzatti found the back of the net in the 30th minute off a second-chance ball from a free kick. Tampa Bay continued with their offensive pressure, scoring again in the 41st minute and bringing a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell made three substitutions to start the half to get some fresh legs in on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Tampa Bay continued to control possession for much of the second half, although they did not have as much offensive pressure as the first. It wasn’t until the 82nd minute that they added to the scorecard with a goal from Lucky Mkosana, who came on late in the game. Outside of Taylor Bailey’s performance in goal, another bright spot of the game was seeing Tarek Morad make his way back onto the field for the first time since early August.

Roots will head back west with a stop in Las Vegas to face Lights FC on Wednesday, September 8th before returning to Laney for Pride Night on September 11th as they play host to San Diego Loyal.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Represents U.S. Motorsports Interests in BlackBook Motorsport
Virtual Summit

MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 3, 2021 – WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s Director of Heritage Events and Public Relations Barry Toepke was invited to participate in a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of professional motorsport circuits hosted by BlackBook Motorsport on Aug. 25.

Toepke joined an illustrious panel comprised of Saif Al Noaimi, Acting CEO of Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management and owner of the Yas Marina Circuit; Paulo Pinheiro, CEO of Autodromo Internatiocional Algarve in Portugal; and moderated by Peter Jones, Executive Director of BlackBook Motorsport in London.

BlackBook Motorsport is a business community for the international motor racing industry, supported by SportsPro, covering the business behind global motorsport across print, digital and events. The BlackBook Virtual Summits bring industry leaders together to discuss the new path motorsport has been placed on.

Topics evolved from the business models currently in place to how the circuits will adapt and thrive in future environments. “With all three circuits emerging from pandemic restrictions, it was interesting to note the similarities of business models in such far-reaching regions as the United Arab Emirates, Portugal and the United States,” Toepke explained. “We have far more commonalities than differences.”

Environmental sustainability is a rapidly developing issue. “We discussed the evolution of EV racing and solar to become carbon neutral. Plus, Monterey’s proximity to the many incubator companies advancing automotive design and technology will play a growing role for WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca,” Toepke added. “Companies like Lucid, Tesla and now Czinger are more frequently testing their advances here before going to market.

“Monterey continues to be one of the leading ‘green’ counties, with sustainability programs and consistent messaging. The world is changing, and we need to stay at the forefront to remain relevant,” he said.

The race track is every bit as important as the machines racing on it to put on a show for fans. Modern and historic race tracks have innovations, both on and off track, that make them unique, and this session looked at three tracks that are iconic and innovative in many ways.

The participants all agreed that circuits need to provide an experience beyond racing. “We need to go to market to introduce what we do, and then deliver on the promise,” Toepke concluded. “Once a non-racing fan visits and has an entertaining and engaging experience, they’ll return. Motorsports has a way of hooking you.”

A poll was taken among the viewers for which race track they most want to drive. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca emerged at the top.

Ray Wersching played for 11 seasons, from 1977-1987. Ray kicked 409 of 425 PATs and 191 of 261 field goals. He totaled 979 points, breaking San Francisco 49ers kicker Tommy Davis' mark of 738 points in 1969. (Because I intend to use the site again,

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
