Spectators Have Become Focus Groups
Based on recent articles and snippets I have read, attendance at sports events comes with an involuntary waiver of all rights to privacy. Forget the Game and the Athletes. It's all about YOUR behavior as you focus on your hot dog and beverage.

"Crowd intelligence" and analytics are all the rage. What you eat, what you watch on the court or on the monitors, your WI-FI, when you enter and leave and all your activities in between.

"Computer vision platforms" will be the norm soon in every arena or stadium, college or professional venue. Why? To monitor "fan engagement" for the benefit of sponsors.

I'm sure they appreciate your participation.

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo started Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders but departed after a short stint in which he rotated snaps with first round draft pick Trey Lance. But he didn't exit without some 49er fans holding their collective breaths as he dove in for a score from the 1-yard-line, making contact with Raiders defenders. Garoppolo popped up and seemed unfazed. Jimmy G. completed 4 of 7 passes for 64 yards to go with two runs. The Gods of Baseball are with the Giants

By Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
OAKLAND – I was the Spanish play-by-play man for the San Francisco Giants back in June 1997. I called that very first interleague game from what was then The Ballpark at Arlington, Texas, and the Giants won that historic game. Later MLB re-structured their format to make this a “regional affair,” i.e, A’s vs. Giants, Yankees vs. Mets, Cubs vs. White Sox, Dodgers vs. Angels. It has been a great success when the teams play in the same area, in the case of New York and Chicago within their own city limits. It is no different here in the Bay Area.

The A’s and Giants concluded their last head-to-head series of the season. The Giants beat the A’s in June, taking two out of the three games at Oracle Park and the Giants repeated the doses, beating the A’s at Oakland in two of the three games. If you watch enough baseball in your life, you know when there is something going on, where a team can’t make much wrong.

The only way we would see these two Bay Area teams again this year would be another World Series, like 1989, but hopefully with no earthquake in the middle. I can never forget 1989, and especially that World Series as I was broadcasting A’s radio from an auxiliary box almost next to the roof at Candlestick Park during that October 17, around 5:05 p.m., and how the Athletics were better than the Giants, before and after that strong Loma Prieta earthquake.

The San Francisco Giants are the biggest surprise of the 2021 season. Nobody could have predicted this type of season for a team. Their front office never mentioned the R word, “rebuilding,” because that word signifies losing for a while until you can win again and is not popular with your fan base.

Rebuilding never sells tickets, especially in the Bay Area. As simple as that. Their three veterans (all in the infield) Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, and Brandon Crawford visited Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth in the off-season. Crawford is having one of his best years at the plate, where he had struggled in recent years -- his glove has never been an issue.

An assortment of journeymen and young players have combined to provide Giants fans with an unexpected thrill of a winning season, on the way to 100 victories. How far the Giants will go this season nobody knows. The Dodgers have more injuries than a Vietnam U.S. Army battalion in 1966 yet they are right there. But there is no doubt who is the Manager of the Year and Executive of the Year in the National League.
Lamonte Wade Jr. came off the bench and hit a two run home run against A’s closer Lou Trivino in the top of the ninth as the Giants
beat the A’s, 6-5.

The Oakland Athletics are not a surprise. They were picked to either win the division again or contend with the Houston Astros again, and that is exactly what is happening.

The A’s brain-power made some very good strategic trades before the deadline, acquiring Starling Márte, Yan Gomes, Josh Harrison and Andrew Chafin. The four made an instant impact with Bob Melvin's ballclub. Especially the veteran Márte, who is leading off at the top with 39 stolen bases in baseball this year. He came at the moment they needed that infusion of talent, especially after center fielder Ramón Laureano was suspended for 80 games for the use of PEDs.

With the situation of the wild card nowadays figuring big during the last six weeks of a season, right now the hot Yankees have kidnapped that first wild card spot and put the Athletics in a precarious situation as they might have to fight on two fronts, trying to catch Houston for the division and having the troops to survive the Wild Card assault. Boston is right behind the A’s. The teams are fighting for the two wild card spots. Melvin says he doesn’t worry about the other teams, and he should not. He is correct; he is managing one team, which is his responsibility.

As far as the Giants protection from the Gods of Baseball, during the last two games which they won, manager Gabe Kapler used a pinch hitter and they both delivered the winning blow. On Saturday, Lamonte Wade Jr. came off the bench and hit a two run home run against A’s closer Lou Trivino in the top of the ninth as they beat the A’s, 6-5.

On Sunday the A’s were winning the game, 1-0, until the eighth inning, when Kapler used his magic wand again and sent Donovan Solano to the plate as a pinch-hitter. Seconds later Solano hit a home run to left field with a runner on for the final 2-1 win. Every move the Giants manager made worked.

Whatever the last month and a half of the season has in store for us will be fascinating for these two Bay Area rivals. Over 100,000 people paid to see the A’s host the Giants at the Oakland Coliseum.

Three Earthquakes Named to MLS Team of the Week
Ebobisse, Abecasis, Almeyda all receive honor

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Three members of the San Jose Earthquakes have been named to Major League Soccer's Team of the Week for Week 21: forward Jeremy Ebobisse , defender Luciano Abecasis, and head coach Matias Almeyda. San Jose defeated the LA Galaxy 2-1 in the California Clasico rivalry match on Friday night.

Ebobisse, 24, scored San Jose's first goal in Friday's victory over the LA Galaxy. It marked his first goal for San Jose after joining the team via trade earlier this month. The Team of the Week selection is his second this season, after receiving the honor in Week 13 while with the Portland Timbers.

Abecasis, 31, started and played 73 minutes on Friday night, helping hold LA's high-scoring offense to one goal and tallying an assist on Ebobisse's score.

Almeyda has guided his team to a 10-match unbeaten run, the longest active streak in MLS. The 2-1 victory over LA on Friday propelled the Quakes above the playoff line and into seventh place in the Western Conference.

Oakland Roots 3

Roots Bring Unbeaten Streak to Six Games with 3-1 Home
Win at Laney Over Tacoma

Roots played host to Tacoma Defiance on a warm Saturday night as the team returned to Laney College. Since their last meeting with Tacoma, Roots have been on a five game unbeaten streak with their most recent match being a 3-1 victory over division leaders Phoenix Rising. Roots got off to a hot start, with a goal from defender Kai Greene in the 13th minute. The squad controlled possession for the rest of the half but a stoppage time goal from Ian Brewitt put them level going into halftime.

The team started the second half with their foot on the gas. Following a missed Penalty from Wal Fall, Ariel Mbumba found the back of the net in the 57th minute after Jose Hernandez intercepted a poor clearance from the Tacoma defense. Just a few minutes later, Johnny Rodriguez would be subbed in for Mbumba and in the 82nd minute he would go on to provide the assist for Bokila’s 4th goal of the season with a pass right across the goal. 16-year-old Javier Mariona would see his first action as a professional player, coming in late for Quincy Amarikwa.

Roots are now unbeaten in their last six and have won their last three. They travel to Tampa Bay to face the 2020 Eastern Conference Champion Rowdies on Friday September 3rd.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell: What are your thoughts on the stretch the team has been on these last few weeks?

What I would say is it’s been a long time coming. There were a lot of things early in the season keeping us from finding a rhythm. You can point your finger at a bunch of things, but I think now we’re in a stretch where we’ve played games consistently and have had some consistency in the lineup. Tonight was the first night of the season where I didn’t have to make a sub in the midfield. Having the heart of our team game to game, and the core of our team game to game, now we’re at that stage.

The experienced players coming back into the starting lineup seems to have rubbed off on all of the younger players in a positive way: The experience makes a big difference. To start the season we were relying a lot on the younger players like Danny and Ariel starting in the midfield. Now, we have our captain in Wal Fall and also Jose, who is a really important player for us starting and I think it settles us a bit to start the game. The experience is making a difference for us at this point in the season.

Tacoma scores on you at the worst possible time of the game. The team doesn’t hang their heads, they press on and put two more in the back of the net. What does it say about their character at this point?

The reality is, you’re going to concede a goal at some point, but a big difference is we’re scoring first. I think that’s a really important thing psychologically because it’s just a new game at the start of the second half. That experience knowing that at 1-1, we know what mistakes not to make in the second half and to just follow the game plan.

Bayville Brothers Head for Sitka, AK
Four Siegel brothers, all raised in Bayville, New York, gather each year to renew their friendships and perhaps settle old scores. (Good naturedly!) This year took them to Sitka, Alaska for five days in pursuit of halibut, salmon and the pristine beauty of America's 49th state.
By all measures, it was a grand success. Left to right: Dan, Jonathan,
David and Jesse.
David make it look easy in front of the pleased boat captain.
Piece of cake for Jesse!

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
