John Lynch, 49, now the General Manager of the San Francisco 49ers,
was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in Tampa, where he spent 11 seasons with the Buccaneers. The former safety is a member of the Class of 2021. Lynch played 15 seasons and his nine Pro Bowls are tied for second among safeties and twice he made All-Pro. He played in 224 games with 191 starts and totaled 1,054 tackles, 13 sacks, 26 interceptions, 16 forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries and 100 passes defended. Photo by Ed Jay.

Tom Flores, the former Raiders and Seahawks head coach,
has been elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2021. Flores, elected as the only coach finalist on the ballot, is the first Hispanic quarterback to win a Super Bowl ring and the first minority head coach to win a Lombardi Trophy. His Raiders won Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII. Flores won Super Bowl IV as a backup quarterback for the Chiefs and Super Bowl XI as an assistant coach of the Raiders. Flores went 91-56 in nine years with the Raiders and had an 8-3 record in the postseason. Photo by Ed Jay.

Charles Woodson earned a selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame
on his first ballot. Woodson was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and finished his 18-year career tied for fifth in interceptions, with Ken Riley, with 65. He led the league in interceptions with nine for the Packers in 2009 and earned a Super Bowl ring with Green Bay the following season. The cornerback-turned-safety also forced 33 fumbles, recorded 20 sacks and had three 90-tackle seasons, including 113 tackles with the Raiders. He was one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history and was a four-time First-Team All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowler.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
I am so sad to hear of Dick Callahan's passing. Dick and I were friends; he was a big fan of my music classes and came to several of my courses.
The first time I met him was after a class I taught on folk music at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. He walked up after class, introduced himself and before he could finish, I said to him, star struck, "Of course I know who you are, Dick. I've been a big fan of your work for 30 years, since the old Warrior days."
He loved the folk class and when I shared with him that I was, in fact, the originator of "RUN TMC," he said, "That was you, huh? Good nickname, kid." It was an honor to have one of the great Bay Area voices compliment me and he did so effusively. Boy did that make me feel great.
Dick was a generous guy. He gave me comp tickets several times for A's games, once for the 2019 playoff game for me and my daughter, just out of kindness, and I will never forget it. We had several wonderful conversations, the first at his favorite Mexican restaurant in Lafayette. I was supposed to join him in the booth and guest-announce an inning when the pandemic hit last year.
Dick also wrote a really nice testimonial for me on my website.

Dear Editor:
Why do we have Sports?
As the combatants enter the arena to do battle on this great American holiday known as the Super Bowl, I am reminded of the young fan who asked for an audience with the Dalai Lama of Sports, whose identity must remain a secret. Ushered into his presence, the fan asked, "Why do we have Sports?" The Dalai Lama smiled and said, "History is testosterone's search for a purpose, be it an unidentified urge to create great art or to engage in mortal combat. On this day, the Super Bowl provides the outlet for that innate urge, and for that we must be grateful, for it allows society to continue in peace and for the many to enjoy the simple pleasures of life."

Dear Editor:
Beautiful job. You are still in mid-season form.
God bless.

Dear Editor:
Thank you! Sports are active now and you must be busy – good thing actually! Hopefully Tampa Bay will do good next week? Brady will do his best I am sure and will be in the records if he wins this one! So much – but wish the Sharks could do better!? Sorry about Callahan – he was indeed a great one – but that’s what they will say about you I am sure and about me I hope! Stay safe and thanks for what you do. “Carpe Diem.”

Khris Davis, outfielder / designated hitter,
Texas Rangers
by Kenny Karst
Good news, bad news. The good news: the Oakland Athletics have acquired a stellar defensive replacement to fill the recent void created at shortstop when Marcus Semien signed last week with the Toronto Blue Jays. Twelve-year veteran Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers is now the newest member of the A's infield crew. The bad news: Oakland fan favorite Khris "Khrush" Davis was the counter centerpiece of last Saturday's five-player transaction with Texas, and will unite with Rangers left fielder Joey Gallo for some serious thump in the middle of Texas' lineup. Joining Andrus on the A's roster is Texas catcher Aramis Garcia, who was claimed by the Rangers off waivers from the San Francisco Giants last November. Oakland also sent two minor league prospects to Texas in the trade: catcher Jonah Heim and right-handed pitcher Dane Acker from the University of Oklahoma. A native of Lakewood in Southern California, Davis played college baseball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans and became an instant hit with the Oakland faithful when he came to the A's in a 2016 trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. During a single game that May against the Rangers, one of Oakland's four AL Western Division rivals, Davis swatted three home runs, including a dramatic walk-off grand slam. He also finished first in home runs for all of Major League Baseball in 2018 when he drove 48 dingers over the outfield fences. Now Davis' dangerous bat will challenge his friends on the A's pitching staff in 2021.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Giants announced that they have signed infielder Tommy La Stella to a three-year Major League contract worth $18.75 million. La Stella will make $2 million in 2021, $5.25 million in 2022 and $11.5 million in 2023. He will also make an annual donation to the Giants Community Fund, which includes $10,000 in 2021, $26,250 in 2022 and $57,500 in 2023.
La Stella, who turned 32 last week, batted a combined .281 (55-for-196) with 14 doubles, two triples, five homers and a .819 OPS in 55 games between the Angels (28 games) and the A’s (27 games) in 2020. Last season, he turned in a .370 on-base percentage and was the toughest batter to strike out among qualified players, only whiffing 12 times in 228 plate appearances. The left-handed hitter ranked in the top five among qualified players in the AL in batting average (.303) and on-base percentage (.393) against right-handers. He also recorded eight hits in 27 at-bats (.296) in the postseason, including posting a .951 OPS in the ALDS against Houston.
La Stella was an All-Star in 2019, posting career-highs in home runs (16), batting average (.295), hits (86), runs (49), RBI (44) and slugging percentage (.486) in 80 games with the Angels. He also posted an .880 OPS against right-handers
in 2019.

Wasn't it great to see Tom Brady hoist the Lombardi Trophy
and celebrating their Super Bowl victory? It is a time honored tradition since the inception of the Super Bowl... That is an intentional lie. For the first four years of Super Bowl history, the Lombardi Trophy had a different name. What was the name of the earlier trophy?

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff

Before the trophy was named after coach Vince Lombardi,
it was simply called the World Professional Football Championship Trophy. The first team to hoist the newly-named Lombardi Trophy was the Baltimore Colts, who defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V in 1971.
The first Lombardi Trophy is on the right!
The event we now call the "Super Bowl" originally went by a duller name: "The AFL-NFL World Championship Game." Although "Super Bowl" has been used unofficially since the very first game, the term wasn't officially recognized by the league until a few years later, with the name first appearing on the cover of the program in 1969 and on the ticket in 1970.
Suggestions? Caught me off base for misinformation?
