On Balance, Some Really Good News
100+ wildfires west of the Rockies and the Dixie Fire jumped in rank from sixth biggest in California history overnight (Thursday to Friday) to third biggest. Bay Area air not good. (Well, not bad compared to L.A., but still...)

The good news? Warriors resigned Andre Iguodala for a year.

He can help bring up the lottery draft rookies (AND is older than both of their ages added together), meaning he'll be playing minutes with them, meaning I can put my feet up and watch him play. Only pro athlete who ever made me laugh out loud since, oh, watching Goose Tatum with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Well, also Big Daddy Lipscomb when he was with the Steelers, wielding a metal line marker, outraged at what he considered a bad call, chasing an official all the way down the sidelines and off the field thru the tunnel....a different kind of laugh, not so good-natured as Iguodala's jape under the basket...which was a court-long throw from Draymond Green's rebound grab to all alone Andre under the other basket who started to do a quick dunk but reconsidered it, went under the basket and then dunked it backwards and came down laughing, along with me and everyone there.

Quakes extend unbeaten streak to seven, Ebobisse makes Quakes debut

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated LAFC 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at PayPal Park. The victory sees the Earthquakes extend their unbeaten streak to seven (2-0-5), the longest active streak in Major League Soccer. Forward Jeremy Ebobisse, acquired via trade with Portland on Thursday, made his Earthquakes debut.

San Jose took the lead in the 11th minute. Cristian Espinoza sent a free kick towards the near post and Nathan got just enough on the ball to redirect it past goalkeeper Tomas Romero. The Quakes added a second 17 minutes later when Espinoza dribbled past his defender and laid off a pass to Chofis, who scored with a low shot from close range.

LAFC would halve the lead minutes before halftime when a Carlos Vela free kick caromed off Quakes midfielder Jackson Yueill for an own goal.

Earthquakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made six total saves in the victory. He has allowed no more than a single goal in all of the Quakes' last six matches.

The Earthquakes will remain in San Jose to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Friday, Aug. 13, presented by CEFCU. The match kicks off from PayPal Park at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Tacoma Defiance 3
Oakland Roots End Scoreless Run,
but Lose 5th Straight Game

Oakland Roots were able to find the back for the first time since July 10th, thanks to a free kick from the captain Wall Fall in the second half. The goal was just a consolation however as Oakland gave up three first half goals including two just before the halftime whistle. Mistakes at the back led to the first goal after poor clearances from De La Paz. Then, a penalty kick late in the half conceded by Jose Hernandez gave Tacoma a 2-0 lead. Moments after the second, the hosts had a third as the ball looked to go over the end line before being tapped back across goal for another score.

Oakland Roots return home to play Sacramento Republic, a game rescheduled from June 19th. Republic and Roots have played twice this season to two draws.

DIA ASSETS: Earthquakes Introduce New Player Jeremy Ebobisse

SAN JOSE, Calif. -  The San Jose Earthquakes held an introductory press conference on August 6 for new forward Jeremy Ebobisse. Ebobisse was acquired in a trade with the Portland Timbers on Thursday.

Ebobisse, 24, has spent his entire professional career with the Timbers, tallying 26 goals and eight assists across 88 appearances (54 starts). He has scored 23 goals in 65 appearances since the start of the 2019 season, tied for 11th most in MLS during that time. He also carries experience at the international level, helping the U.S. U-20s win their first-ever Concacaf U-20 Championship in 2017 and later competing at the FIFA U-20 World Cup where he scored two goals. So far in 2021, Ebobisse has scored four goals in 13 appearances (11 starts).

San Jose Earthquakes Forward Jeremy Ebobisse -- On what he's excited for:
"I think San Jose's a really interesting project. Since Matias [Almeyda] has come to the helm, we've seen the budding of the group and I believe I have some qualities that hopefully will jell really well with the rest of the guys. I've already been here for one [training] session and the energy is really positive. It's exactly what I sensed from the outside. They're a really motivated and united group that's always working towards that one goal, that's always relentless in the way that they play, and I have a lot to learn from the guys that are already here as well as bring what I can to the table. I think I'm at a pretty pivotal stage in my career where I spent the last three years getting to know different positions, getting to play in different systems, getting to play under a couple different coaches as well. Now, I think it's important that I work really hard in refining myself in one of those positions and that's a philosophy that the organization shares as well, so I'm really excited to see what I can do with that responsibility and the trust that's placed in me."

On getting to work with the other members of this team:
"I think ultimately I'll be judged on the goals that I score. I think that I have a lot more to offer than just goals and that's going to be about creating partnerships across the field, whether it's with the center backs, understanding their cues on how they move the ball forward, the holding mids, and the wingers eventually as well. Goals aside, I see wingers that like to go at players 1v1, that are always engaging back lines. And when you see that and when you see a backline receding, that creates opportunities for a striker."

On what he learned in Portland and hopes to learn from Matias Almeyda:
"I have fond memories of Gio [Giovanni Savarese] and his staff in Portland. Of course, when you spend that much time in a club and city, you go through moments, with MLS is Back  and even the MLS Cup Final that we didn't get done. When I look at my growth trajectory in Portland, it was about learning how to win, whether it was learning how to win individual duels in games and learning how to win a mental battle perhaps, to learning actually how to close out a game or how to score by any means necessary. Coming in, I was very concerned about how things looked; always getting off a clean shot or making the right move before shooting or trying to find the perfect angle. I realize that the game goes by a lot quicker than it did in college or the academy. And from that point, it was about being a little scrappier and a goal scored on the six-yard line where you're heading through a couple guys is the same as a 40-yard banger. Taking pride in the so-called uglier goals, the tap-ins, whatever they might be, is something that I really developed and it's something that I'm going to continue to focus on here. Now it's about being even more decisive."

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca's Kick-Off Car Show Waves the Green Flag to Monterey Car Week

Monterey, Calif., Aug. 5, 2021 – After a one-year hiatus along the Peninsula, Monterey Car Week returns to the Central Coast with the singular goal of bringing smiles and a sense of normalcy to the community.

Starting the highly anticipated week off is WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s Kick-Off Car Show, which will display authentic race cars actively participating in the Monterey Pre-Reunion on Downtown Monterey’s famed Alvarado Street. Attendees are both able and encouraged to meet with drivers and connect with history up close and personal – something few other race tracks offer to fans.

The show, which is free for everyone, will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, August 6, with all 24 roaring high-octane cars being escorted to Alvarado Street by the California Highway Patrol. Cibo Italiano Ristorante will be offering drink specials with a DJ playing, and tickets for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will be raffled off. The event will conclude at 7 p.m., when the cars rev up and return to the fabled circuit to prepare for the weekend’s event.

The Monterey Pre-Reunion, premiering August 7-8, serves as a chance for drivers and teams to get additional track time before the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which takes place the following weekend. Both events are exciting ways to watch vintage race cars thrive in their natural habitat. With eight different run groups crossing the checkered line, there’s plenty of racing for everyone to enjoy.

Since 2010, the coastal road course commences Monterey Car Week with the car show to give locals a sample of the thrill WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca brings to the Peninsula. Races during the week feature cars ranging from new race cars to vintage race cars from pre-1920 – and the Kick-Off Car Show embraces the vintage aura of such a historic track.

Among those on display will be a 1966 Bizzarrini 5300 GT America housing a 327 cubic inch Corvette engine – one of 114 ever built, and this special car is the only one racing in the United States. For added flair, a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 will be proudly shown, as well as a 1973 BMW CSL. Many other jaw-dropping cars will be parked, with model years varying from 1958 to 1988.

Come this weekend, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will keep up the tradition as children under 15 are granted free entry with a ticketed adult. Encompassing fans of all ages, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will have a Ferris wheel within the Kid-Zone. Go-Karts, for the first time since 2019, will be active on Saturday, August 14, for anyone seeking a thrill in a set and challenging course. For race fans 21 and older, a Beer Garden featuring local beers will be set up, accompanied by local wines to sample and tasty sides.

Navigating a career in any business is highly complex, especially in the world of sports and entertainment. Written for aspiring sports professionals, current sports industry professionals, and any career enthusiasts who are chasing the fancy logo and corner office, LOL, Loss of Logo: What’s Your Next Move? offers valuable takeaways for everyone. Comprised of powerful perspectives from 38 multitalented industry professionals, this book will give you the tools to succeed in the industry, with or without your logo.
The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
