Techno-Discrimination
It's Friday night and it's time to watch the S.F. Giants vs. the Chicago Cubs home game, with Kruk & Kuip.

Chicago, "Hog Butcher for the World." (Carl Sandburg) vs. San Francisco, "San Francisco is 49 square miles surrounded by reality." (Paul Kantner).

Two great and storied baseball teams. Should be a great game. But wait! I can't watch it, because I don't "stream," and I don't want Apple TV. So, no game for me or for Chicago fans who are in town. What an embarrassment. What an insult! Who makes these decisions? The MLB, the teams, the networks?

When they do their data-crunch on how many watched it on Apple TV, maybe they can determine how many fans could not and did NOT watch it! It's Techno-Discrimination. "You either buy and use the new technology, or we don't let you watch your team play." It's that simple.

The Passing of a Giant

by Dave Newhouse
The sport of basketball, and the world of sport, owes so much to
Bill Russell, but Bill Russell owes something to the City of Oakland.

For it was in Oakland where the basketball legacy of Russell took shape at McClymonds High School in the 1950s, though his future legendary status hardly was evident at the time. That’s because, amazingly, he was a bench player as a Mack senior.

“He couldn’t hit the backboard with his shot,” quipped John Brodie, the future NFL quarterback who played for Oakland Tech against Russell.

Russell was a mid-year high school graduate before honing his game with a post-prep traveling team that played in various Northern California cities, where he learned the art of shadow defense, sticking to his man, shutting him down and blocking his shot. Seeing his potential, the University of San Francisco offered him a basketball scholarship. And the developing kid from Oakland didn’t disappoint from that point forward.

Russell, who died over the weekend at 88, is the most dominant basketball player of all time, and the greatest athlete America has produced in any sport. The distinction Russell has over all other athletes in this country, historically, is dominance.

He won two NCAA basketball championship at USF, which has no other NCAA hoops titles. He earned an Olympic hoops gold medal in 1956. Then he collected 11 NBA championships in 13 years with the Boston Celtics. Like I said, dominant.

He also is the first African American coach to win an NBA title, as a player-coach with the Celtics. (Fritz Pollard, who is black, coached an NFL champion in the 1920s, and John McLendon, also black, coached an American Basketball Association champion in 1961-62).

Russell, unlike any basketball player other than Wilt Chamberlain, changed the rule book. Because of Russell’s shot-blocking skills, goaltending was introduced. Chamberlain is credited with widening the key. Those two men revolutionized the game more than any other pair.

Michael Jordan is recognized by many as basketball's greatest player. But in hearing of Russell’s death, he said “The world has lost a legend.”

And not just a basketball legend, for Russell was a civil rights advocate who called out injustice, including in the City of Boston, which he labeled as “a flea market of racism.” He later softened his tone, calling Boston “an open city.” Maybe that’s why it took Boston until 2013 to erect a statue of Russell.

Well, it was in Boston where the NBA’s first all-black starting lineup occurred, just as it was at USF where the NCAA’s first all-black starting lineup took place, with Russell the starting center in both instances.

“I was an innovator,” he said of himself. Bill Bradley honored Russell thusly: “The smartest player ever to play the game.” President Brack Obama, thinking even higher, awarded Russell the Medal of Freedom in 2011. Russell fared worse as an NBA coach in Seattle and Sacramento, although greatness isn’t always a given.

Russell, regardless, traveled a unique road, moving from his birth place in Monroe, LA to Oakland when he was nine. Later in life, when Oakland was devaluing high school sports, Russell came to Oakland for a speaking engagement and said, prophetically, “Why are we at war with our children?”

Bill Russell was a special athlete, and a special human being.

Michael Phelps -- From the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
While I was an employee for Visa, USA in the Marketing Department, I had the good fortune of meeting a lot of celebrities that endorsed Visa and athletes that were sponsored by the company. At our 2004 end-of-the-year meeting we got a surprise guest appearance by Olympic swimmers Michael Phelps, Lenny Krayzelburg and Ian Crocker.

The three swimmers signed autographs, took photos and chatted with Visa employees for an hour. All three were very friendly and joked around and told stories of their recent Olympic experiences and memories. The one thing I can still remember about Michael Phelps is he was drinking Red Bull energy drinks one after the other. He must have gone thru 10 cans in the hour he spent with us. Several years later I was fortunate enough to photograph Michael Phelps at a
Santa Clara swim meet.

At the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics Michael Phelps won a total of five gold medals and two bronze. His total Olympic medal count is
23 gold, three silver and two bronze. This makes him the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time.

Sad. The 2022 Yanks are running away with the American League East.

Everybody knows the New York Yankees have the highest all-time regular season win–loss percentage (.570) in Major League Baseball history with a 10,511-7,943 win/loss record.

Because the Yankees came on the scene later than a few franchises, seven franchises have more wins. What franchise has the most regular season wins in MLB history?

Stanford Cardinal
Pohlen Named Director of Player Development
Pohlen will oversee a number of areas in new role
with the Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. - Jeanette Pohlen, a 2011 graduate from Stanford and former Pac-10 Player of the Year, has rejoined the Cardinal as the Director of Player Development, announced Friday by Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women's Basketball Tara VanDerveer

A newly designed position for the program, Pohlen will assist in various areas focused on helping student-athletes succeed both on and off the court, while serving as a liaison with a number of other departments, on campus and beyond.

"I'm so grateful to be back with the program," said Pohlen. "Stanford has always felt like home, so having the opportunity to work in a program I know well with some amazing people is really exciting. I can't wait to get started!"

Playing for the Cardinal from 2007-11, Pohlen suited up in 150 career games, a number that held the program record prior to Anna Wilson and Alyssa Jerome surpassing that mark in 2022. Her 4,355 career minutes rank third in program history, as do her 269 made 3-pointers. She dished 560 career assists, ranking sixth in program history, while she still owns the single-season record with 96 career 3-pointers made her senior year.

The Cardinal went to four-straight Final Fours during Pohlen's playing career, including runner-up finishes in the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2010. Overall, Stanford was 137-14 with Pohlen and dominated conference play, winning the Pac-10 regular season and tournament titles all four years.

Pohlen was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2011, also earning first-team All-America honors that season by the Associated Press and USBWA. A three-time All-Pac-12 player, she went on to be drafted in the first round of the WNBA Draft, selected ninth overall by the Indiana Fever. As a pro, she played in 148 career games with the Fever, winning the 2012 WNBA Championship.

"Jeanette is a perfect choice to develop this new position for our program," added VanDerveer. "Her knowledge of the team and department matched with her experience and success as a player will be important assets to our student-athletes."

Pohlen spent last season on staff as a coaching intern, as Stanford advanced to its second-straight Final Four, finishing the season 32-4.

MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 2, Real Salt Lake 2
Ebobisse scores 12th goal of 2022, sets new
single-season career-high

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night at PayPal Park.

San Jose jumped out to an early lead in the 12th minute. After VAR awarded a penalty kick for a handball in the box, Cristian Espinoza converted the attempt. It marked the sixth consecutive match in which the Quakes scored first.

Real Salt Lake responded less than 10 minutes later when Jasper Loffelsend capitalized on a breakaway.

The Earthquakes regained the lead in the 62nd minute. Cristian Espinoza played a through ball to Jeremy Ebobisse and his low shot slid through the keeper’s legs. Espinoza and Ebobisse lead the team in assists (8) and goals (12), respectively.

RSL scored the equalizer in the final moments of the match. Six minutes into stoppage time, a cross fell to Jefferson Savarino at the back post and his volley snuck past goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski.

The Earthquakes will now prepare to host Inter Miami CF in a midweek match on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The match will kick off from PayPal Park at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO
On the approach moving forward to improve defensively:
“There is a moment when you cannot apply enough pressure to recover the ball high and then you have to have a more compact team, you have to recover behind the ball and have a good structure there, avoid crosses and understand that’s a team you need to control very well. As a game, as soccer goes, it’s a collective component that we are working on. We know we need to shift the lines, our midfielders need to control situations, and our wingers have to help. Then there is an individual component, the technical and tactical action that the player has to read. I think it is very clear, we need to read and understand it better.”

On the team morale in the locker room:
“Right now, all of us are very frustrated and sad because they scored on the last play. Those are three points that would’ve helped us. We have to recover and recover mentally; soccer provides you with opportunities. We play Wednesday against Inter Miami CF which is an important game, and we have to stand up and fight again with the mentality to win the game because we have done it before, and we can do it.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER CRISTIAN ESPINOZA
On what the team must do to avoid these outcomes again:
“Clearly, we need to be a little bit more intelligent when we are winning and play with that nervousness from the other team especially when playing at home which is what all teams do in the league when they have a lead. We need to defend that lead on all plays no matter how little they may seem. It is always important to maintain that lead no matter what. We need to learn from that, and it needs to happen quick because there are less and less games as the season goes on. Even though things may not be going well, our mentality stays the same: to try to reach the playoffs. And as long as there is a chance to qualify, our objective stays the same.”

On if he’s fatiguing from heavy minutes:
“I actually feel really good. I like to be part of the starting 11. Physically and mentally, I am okay, ready to go for the rest of the season. But if the coach thinks I should start on the bench, it is a coach’s decision and we have to take in those decisions. For me, I’ll tell you that I want to play every single game and every single minute.”

Granite Construction was awarded the project.

In making the presentation before the Board, Randell Ishii, Director of Public Works, Facilities, and Parks; and Bryan Flores, Chief of Parks, illustrated the economic benefits of completing the two projects in unison. The start/finish bridge is reaching the end of its lifespan and requires replacement for public safety while also enhancing future revenue opportunities.

John Narigi, President and General Manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, praised the public works, facilities and parks staff for their support and management, whose department assumed oversight of the Laguna Seca Recreation Area late last year.

“Mr. Ishii and Mr. Flores expertly presented the scenarios for what this facility needs to keep it among the elite tracks in the world and for the betterment of Monterey County residents and businesses,” Narigi said. “Their expertise and commitment to the Laguna Seca Recreation Area is what delivered this project from conception to implementation. They and the Board of Supervisors are owed a major round of applause.”

In April, the Board of Supervisors approved an estimated cost of $9,725,000 for the two critical projects. But because of the unprecedented worldwide influences of increased transportation and petroleum costs, the cost of the project came in well over the estimate.

“I will admit that I was very concerned the increased costs that were completely out of anyone’s control might negatively affect proceeding with the project,” Narigi added. “The Supervisors’ questions and concerns for the increased funding was evident, but they also knew how important Laguna Seca is to the Monterey County economy, impacting our local retail and hospitality industries and the non-profits which support operational needs during event weeks. Their support is the strongest voice the Laguna Seca Recreation Area has received and indicates their commitment to a bright, multi-use future for the park.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in November that will close the racing surface. The campgrounds will remain open daily and there are many activities being planned that will utilize WeatherTech Raceway for both non-racing and non-motorsport events. The Paddock and Hagerty Marketplace will be open to a wide variety of activities that can be held while construction is occurring. San Francisco Giants

The Giants franchise, with a 20 year jump (founded in 1883) on the Yankees franchise (1903), has a
11,301-9,773 record.

https://bit.ly/3ORdE4N will take you to the franchise
W/L record for all franchises. The Red Sox have the
fifth highest W/L percentage.

I was surprised to see how many ties each franchise
had before game lights were introduced!

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
