Politics: 49er QB Primaries
The political season has started to heat up, as has the race as to who will head the ticket as the 49er's Quarterback. Summaries of the candidates may be found on the link provided, and most are familiar
to Sports Today readers. Will it be the wunderkind Brock Purdy, who starred last year before the Eagles ripped his elbow in the playoffs?
He certainly has earned the opportunity to command the team, but uncertainties and unreliable medical reports cloud his situation. Trey Lance, injury-ridden but selected for such a bounty of draft choices based on his potential, certainly deserves a chance to finally show what he can do. He has continued to watch and learn, and undoubtedly fans would like to finally check the merchandise.
Sam Darnold, a 6'3" veteran out of USC, adds some old-fashioned drop-back style and experience to the mix and may just be the more conservative choice amid the others. Finally, a longshot out of Arkansas, Brandon Allen, who has played for four teams since 2016, serves as the wild-card candidate, and it wouldn't be the only time such a profile has surprised folks and risen to the top.
We can be certain that the information fans receive, generally on behalf of the team's campaign managers, must be heavily discounted. Much of what fans hear will have been calculated to confuse or mislead the opposition. So, make your own choices based on your
own intuition and knowledge --and please share them with Sports Today with your letters.
Candid, unbiased opinions are always welcome. Personally, I like all of the candidates and hope decisions include careful consideration of their readiness and long-term health considerations. Perhaps a rotational/situational approach as to who fits best for each game or specific game-situation would offer maximum flexibility to maximize the potential of each Candidate and keep opponents off-guard. With Kittle and all the other weaponry available, each Candidate should all be able to secure victories for the 49ers, collectively or in their individual capacities. That's what we all want!

Stephen Curry Will Be In Our Future
by Dave Newhouse
| |
One certainty about life: The future is hard to predict. Therefore, what’s ahead for Stephen Curry after he stops shooting basketballs?
Well, we might not foresee him up in the air as a pilot, but the sky’s the limit in terms of his possibilities.
Governor Curry? U.S. Senator Curry? Vice-President Curry.
President Curry?
Before you think I’m daft, let me offer some historic parallels.
Jesse “The Body” Ventura was a professional wrestler who later put a head-lock on Minnesota voters as their elected governor.
George Murphy was a Hollywood actor-dancer during the World War II era who then two-stepped his way into Washington, D.C. as a California senator.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was a Mr. Universe body-builder who muscled his way into the California governorship.
Lastly, and most famously, Ronald Reagan was a B-movie actor whose most starring role came next as the American president.
So let’s not be hasty in concluding that Curry is nothing more than a classic 3-point shooter, and that’s where his fame will end. Consider, instead, his potential.
Curry is a rare superstar athlete who is a college graduate, returning to Davidson, a mini-Stanford, and earning a degree in recent years.
Curry is a family man, married happily to Ayesha, a successful business woman, and the proud father of three children.
Curry is as much a giver as a taker. Yes, he makes $40 million annually with the Golden State Warriors, but the public good he does in the Bay Area with his Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation benefits so many needy children. And, tellingly, he was the 2022-23 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award recipient.
Curry is as popular as he is athletic, never turning down an interview request, and always articulate and thoughtful in his comments.
Curry is a committed basketball player, improving his game as he has aged, while also strengthening his body.
Curry, remarkably, has no public baggage. I can’t remember reading anything negative about him, or hearing anything damaging coming out of his mouth.
And Curry just won the American Century golf championship at Lake Tahoe, and scored a hole-in-one in the process. What can’t he do athletically? Or anything?
Add all that together, and what other future politician offers as many positives as Curry? For that matter, how many past politicians were so electable?
At 35, Curry could, with his dedicated physical conditioning, play another four to six NBA seasons before deciding what to do next with his life.
Curry relishes challenging himself, so I can’t envision him growing wine grapes in France, or living next to a Scotland golf course, and being satisfied--not when American power brokers are eyeing Curry in so many different ways, and planning his future even now without his knowledge.
Stephen Curry in the White House, occupying the Oval Office? Don’t sell him short. History is on his side.

The A’s, the Giants, and the
Pacific Kelp Forest
by Howard Pearlstein
I used to describe the impermanence of things as being similar to standing on a beach in the intertidal zone and feeling the sand under my toes gradually being washed away. A slightly uneasy loss of stability.
When I grew up on the East Coast, baseball fans were watching hometown teams go west: the A’s in my hometown of Philly and the Giants and the Dodgers in the New York boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Fans felt betrayed and abandoned.
Aside from the annual, “Wait till next year” of Philly sports, the essence of being a fan was the memories connected to that team. That place, those players.
One true fan memory of mine was going out to Shibe Park with my father to meet some of the players. He was their dentist. Pitcher Bobby Shantz was the only player I remember. He was the MVP who’d won 24 games the previous year but my thought was only surprise that he was “not much taller than I was!” (Shantz was only 5’6” and is alive today at 97!)
Memories are the flesh and blood of loyalties, memories which we expect to continue on into the future. But when teams leave, those memories stop and there’s a sense of loss, even betrayal.
The fact that some fortunate son who inherited a pile of money higher than ethical ideals can “own” a team where so many precious memories are banked, that he can just move it away to some place offering him a better deal, seems wrong. Seems just: “So long, suckers!”
And I wonder if and how much the impermanence of things we care about – teams, jobs, woodlands, buildings, neighborhoods -- has to do with the bubbling undercurrent of anger we see everywhere. Even to the point of polymorphous anger erupting in random shootings. Polymorphous because none of those “go in and shoot everyone” people ever have any coherent explanation of Why They Did It. Not that I would expect one. There’s no point where logic -- aka sanity -- can result in “go shoot everyone.” Just overwhelming anger blotting out the mind.
And for the rest of us, not just the ones going postal, there is the same “nothing-you-can-do about it” unresolved anger.
Except maybe sometimes…
Which brings us to our own very pissed-off Pacific Sea Otter in Santa Cruz -- Enhydra lutris nereis. She board-jacks the surfers gliding through the kelp forest and rides her most recent acquisition after the bitten and scared-off surfer has given it up.
Yes, “her.”
The Latin name of our mid-coast sea otter sub-species is nereis, meaning water nymph, so it is appropriate that our current furry media star is a bad-ass five-year old water babe, formally named Otter 841, but whom I call Odetta, the female version of Otto.
I know I’m getting off into metaphysical equivalences here, but A’s fans and Odetta, the board-surfing Pacific Sea Otter, share similar interests. Familiar memories are the comfort food of the mind and we are both having ours taken away.
It’s particularly unfair that Odetta will herself get taken away from her home and memories. She is being hunted for re-location, exiled from her birthplace like the Cherokees on the Trail of Tears. But they say she has to go and the idea of even suggesting that surfers give up their favorite Steamer Lane is too much to ask.
And the A’s go to Las Vegas.
All we can do is rise above anthropocentrism and feel solidarity between A’s fans and otters as the juggernaut of greed and history crushes everything in its path.
And Odetta: You go girl!
To paraphrase the wonderful Keb Mo song: "This is your home, this is where you belong."

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Dick Butkus -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee | |
Former Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus appeared at a Bay Area sports show and I made sure to stop by and see him. I found his table and took my time looking thru all the photos he was selling. This photo stood out to me because of the expression on his face and he’s on the ground without his helmet. I chatted with him briefly and he told me the story about what had happened in the photo. He signed the photo for me and shook my hand. I enjoyed meeting him.

On Sunday afternoon the Bay Area Panthers played host to the first round of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Tucson Sugar Skulls. The Panthers (10-5) entered the game in second place overall in the Western Conference, the Sugar Skulls (9-6) in third. The two teams entered the game even (1-1) against each other this season, each winning on the road. The Panthers stormed to an early 22-0 lead and maintained the lead throughout the game, though the Sugar Skulls came within five points late in the fourth quarter before Rankin’s rushing gave the Panthers enough cushion to end the game, 46-34. The game was characterized by big plays on special teams, hard hits, and relatively penalty-free flow. The Panthers remain home to face the fourth-seeded Northern Arizona Wranglers Saturday in the Western Conference Finals. Oakland Wins Second Straight Road Game 3-1
The opening chance of the game came for El Paso Locomotive when they struck the post in the first minutes. In the first half-hour, Oakland's best opportunity came from a free-kick by Lindo Mfeka, forcing El Paso keeper Benny Diaz to make a punch-out off the cross.
The most significant chance of the first half occurred in the 39th minute when Benny Diaz made a crucial save to deny Oakland’s Napo Matsoso and Roots the lead heading into halftime. Paul Blanchette, the goalkeeper for Oakland Roots, also made an important save minutes later to keep his team from falling behind.
The second half began with a strong start for El Paso, as Petar Petrovic found the net with a shot that deflected off Emrah Klimenta, resulting in an own goal and giving El Paso the 1-0 lead early in the second half.

Time Well Spent
How A Summer Internship Helped Dare Rose Reach World Championships
BERKELEY, Calif. – Just two years into his collegiate career, Dare Rose had already assembled a resume that many competitive swimmers would envy.
With his key contributions to California's 2022 NCAA men's swimming & diving championship and three All-America honors earned over two seasons, combined with his status as a previous member of the United States Junior National Team, Rose was one of the country's top young swimmers heading into his junior year in 2022-23.
But it wasn't just his development in the pool that led to a breakout junior season that culminated in earning a spot on the U.S. National Team, which will compete in the 2023 World Aquatic Championships starting this weekend in Fukuoka, Japan. One of the biggest contributors to the success was the time he spent out of the water and away from competitive swimming in the summer of 2022.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
