Moe Berg, Senators catcher (and later U.S. spy), played an AL record 117th consecutive, errorless game. Berg, a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia Law School, regularly read ten newspapers a day. His reputation as an intellectual was fueled by his successful appearances as a contestant on the radio quiz show Information Please, in which he answered questions about the etymology of words and names from Greek and Latin, historical events in Europe and the Far East, and ongoing international conferences.
In 1934, five years before he retired as a player, Berg made a trip to Japan as part of a traveling major league All-Star team. One might wonder what the seldom-used catcher, a .251 hitter that season, was doing playing with the likes of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Berg, who spoke seven languages, including Japanese, (one teammate said, Berg can speak seven languages, and can't hit in any of them) made his way to the roof of one of the tallest buildings he could gain entry into -- a hospital -- and took home movies of the Tokyo skyline that were used in the planning of Jimmy Doolittle and his Raiders 1942 bombing raids on the Japanese capital. The U.S. government wrote a letter to Berg, thanking him for the movies.
In 1943, Berg joined the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA, and was well-regarded enough to have been chosen to carry out one of the O.S.S.' more ambitious endeavors -- a plot to assassinate Werner Heisenberg, the head of Nazi Germany's atom bomb project. Berg, who spoke German fluently, was sent in December 1944 to Zurich to attend a lecture by Heisenberg. Berg's assessment of the situation was that Germany was not close to having a nuclear bomb, and there was never an attempt to kill Heisenberg.
(The Catcher Was a Spy tells the true story of Morris "Moe" Berg
(Paul Rudd), the Major League Baseball player, Ivy League graduate, attorney and top-secret spy who helped the U.S. defeat Nazi Germany in the race to build the atomic bomb.)

Letters to the Editor
G-Men Are Rockin'
Kap's "Rules? What Rules?" Attitude has made a lot of waves in baseball. Friends? Who needs 'em? The G-Men will score any time they can, and bunt or steal a base any time they want. You can never have enough runs. Boo-hoo -- you put on a shift, I'll hit it where you ain't. That's how we roll.
Any news on when Evan Longoria will be back? As usual, Kap finds a way to keep the team in the hunt, but a big bat and a veteran presence like Evan would be a real boost. And "Late Night" LaMonte Wade Jr. -- we miss your clutch heroics -- come on back soon!

Motor Sports Coverage and T-Buff
I would like to commend Sports Today for your coverage of Motor Sports and some of your regular features. Thanks for the calendar of events at Laguna Seca. I can't wait for the Superbikes on the July 8th weekend. Down the corkscrew and then full throttle to the finish line on wheelies!
By the way, on the Trivia Column you run, I didn't know James Garner was a part of the original ownership group of the Dallas Mavericks. I knew he played the title role in Maverick, but never made the basketball connection. Where does T-Buff come up with this stuff? Keep up the good work! What a great read.

As The A’s Turn --
A Baseball Soap Opera
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
|
|
Amaury Pi-Gonzales on Oct. 3, 2018,
A's vs. Yankees in the Wild Card
|
|
OAKLAND – General Hospital, Guiding Light, Days of Our Lives, As the World Turns, The Young and the Restless are some of the longest-running soap operas. They have been running for decades, some since the 1960s and even before. It is a staple of American entertainment.
As a matter of fact, few things have survived longer on television than soap operas. They are guaranteed a loyal audience. I am sure your wife, your sister or mother or grandmother were big fans. I do not want to discriminate, but some men also were hooked to soaps. Some ballplayers have told me, when they went on the road, they watched these in the morning.
The Oakland A’s stadium situation could be dated to 1989 (coincidentally the same year the A’s beat the Giants in the World Series) when former A’s owner Wally Haas, of Levi Strauss & Co, agreed to cede the Giants and owner Bob Lurie the territorial rights to San José (which was under A’s control) as the Giants were looking to relocate the team out of California.
The Giants owner was frustrated that his club could not get a new stadium built in the Bay Area. Finally the Giants resolved their situation, many years later, but it was not easy. They suffered various setbacks as well as losing a few elections. In 2000 the Giants inaugurated Pac Bell Park, today known as Oracle Park.
The state capital, Sacramento, was a possibility for the A’s as their new home years ago, but plans did not materialize. Their mayor was Kevin Johnson, an ex-NBA star, who successfully fought to keep the Sacramento Kings in his city and was very receptive to the idea of the Oakland A’s moving there.
Johnson believed in the power of pro sport franchises. Today Sacramento, according to the Nielsen Designated Market Area (DMA), ranks 20 while Las Vegas is a 40 media market. These are the top media markets in the U.S.: 1-New York, 2-Los Angeles, 3-Chicago, 4-Philadelphia, 5-Dallas/Ft Worth, 6-San Francisco/Oakland/San José.
“Sacramento is a very nice city, but not for Major League Baseball, as far as our ownership is concerned,” A’s owner, Lew Wolff, told a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. Sacramento is known since 2017 as “America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.” At the end of this episode, Sacramento also struck out.
In 2011 the Oakland A’s were planning on going south to Fremont, where they would play at Cisco Field, an excellent location adjacent to Highway 680, about 20-25 miles south from the Oakland Coliseum and just 15 miles north of San José, the largest city in the Bay Area.
That plan had the A’s building a 32,000 to 35,000 seat stadium which they would share with the Oakland Raiders. Since then, the Raiders stopped watching this soap opera and left for Las Vegas. At the time I attended a Pro A’s rally at Fremont at the old Saddle Rack, a country-style bar and nightclub which used to have some famous country talent like actor-singer Dwight Yoakam and others of notables.
People showed up in opposition, citing it would bring more traffic and crime. The A’s got cold feet and Fremont struck out. The suburb of Fremont today is the #4 most populous city in the Bay Area, with over 235,000. Only San José, San Francisco and Oakland have a larger population.
Fremont? End to that chapter of this long-running soap opera. Fremont might not have the A’s, but they have Tesla, one of the great automobile manufacturers in the world, as we speak.
Lake Merritt, Oakland, in 2017. The A’s also planned to build a 35,000 seat ballpark in downtown Oakland near Lake Merritt, but that was derailed when the Peralta Community College District, which owns the land, rejected the offer.
We all remember that location, and some of us visit that area frequently. It was considered downtown, just as the current proposed Howard Terminal, which is obviously much closer to downtown than Peralta College.
Currently several lawsuits in opposition hang over the A’s as far as their new Howard Terminal downtown park, while the team management continues to work on parallel plans with Oakland and Las Vegas.
All estimates are that this long-running soap opera will have some kind of conclusion during the 2022 season. Some even predict this summer. And, of course, we will all witness the final episode of As The A’s Turn.
Adiós muchachos.

Autograph Success --
Randy Cross!
|
|
I bumped into 49er Great Randy Cross at Tommy's Joynt, the Original Hof-Brau of San Francisco and one of San Francisco's longest living institutions. Located on the corner of Van Ness and Geary, it was right across the street from my office in the Jack Tar Hotel's office wing, and the hot turkey and brisket plates made it an obvious and frequent destination. (It also stayed open late and, excuse the aside, was the only place open after Procol Harum played the Fillmore in 1995 -- they all needed refueling and enjoyed the worldwide selection of brews and fortuitously were staying at the Jack Tar).
One afternoon I walked over to Tommy's Joynt for a late lunch and while on line noticed the unmistakable #51, sans helmet, chatting with a friend and enjoying the cuisine. Not wishing to annoy him or trigger a bad reaction in a 49er offensive lineman, I pondered the situation for a few seconds, determined a Low Threat Level, and casually asked him if he would sign the back of my business card. Without missing a bite of his brisket sandwich, he gladly obliged, and away I went back to the Hof-Brau line.
Randy's 13-year career, entirely with the 49ers, included three Pro Bowl selections and three Super Bowl championships (XVI, XIX and XXIII). His last game as a player was Super Bowl XXIII, on January 22, 1989. He went on to have a distinguished career as a television football analyst.
This autograph event was in the 80s, as the Jack Tar changed its name to the Cathedral Hill in 1982, which is what my business card has. Possibly it occurred in January 1989 as a prelude to that great Super Bowl victory.

Q. Are We Not Men?
A. We Are Deebo
By Robert Moselle
Monterey, CA
To reference DEVO in Sports Today, the situation must be both bizarre and desperate. It is.
Last season, 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuels developed into one of the most dynamic and versatile weapons in the NFL. Part of this was his deployment as a hybrid wide receiver/running back, but what started as an occasional formation soon became the norm -- so much so that its impact began to wane and Deebo began to regularly get met head-on by linebackers. The physical toll on Deebo increased exponentially from what had started as a novel offensive scheme.
Deebo is under contract through 2022. At first, he had wanted an extension and increased salary commensurate with his wide receiver peers, but now there is talk that he wants a trade, in part because of the physical toll of the hybrid position.
So, does S.F. let go of arguably the most potent weapon in the NFL? The answer is NO! Shanahan used Garoppolo in the playoffs despite knowledge that his thumb and shoulder injuries were worse than Team LA-Z-Boy reported. Now he's 'damaged goods,' although I believe he will mend and take a team to the playoffs. Shanahan knew Jimmy would tough it out, and that when the season was over, they could get rid of him. Same with Deebo -- milk the hybrid for another year and then either pay him much more or find someone new.
Answer: Pay Deebo more money and agree the hybrid position will be used only as a 'secret weapon,' deployed sparingly to keep defenses on their heels. That would be good for the success and longevity of Deebo's career, and good for the 49ers as they keep the Deebo Dynamo.
Of course, that means Shanahan must be trusted should they agree to this formula. Caveat: A verbal agreement is worth the paper it is written on. Readers of Sports Today are invited to share their opinions here. You are the FANS!

Roots Grab Point In El Paso
Oakland Roots got on the front foot early with a strike from Darek Formella in the 13th minute. A free kick from Juan Azocar found Formella at the back post who buried the goal on the volley to give Oakland the 1-0 lead. Oakland continued to put on the pressure for the next 15 minutes before El Paso worked their way into control. Not long after El Paso found their feet they found an equalizer when Solignac found his way in on goal and his shot deflected in off Danny Barbir to give the host the equalizer. Late in the first half Alejandro Fuenmayor conceded a penalty that lucky for Roots was hit off the bar as the teams went into the half level at 1-1.
The second half was a slower affair from both sides with the best chance coming in the 74th Minute when Roots keeper Benny Diaz came up with a huge double save to ensure Oakland went home with a point.
Roots return to Laney College to host Colorado Springs next Saturday April 30th with kickoff set for 7:00 PM PT.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
