Letters to the Editor
G-Men Lookin' Better
They may not be "Murderer's Row" (yet), but Estrada, Davis, Haniger,
Yaz and Schmitt have power, and the rotation is strong. Plus, Schmitt's average is higher than Ty Cobb's. I started at "Cautiously Optimistic" and am now up to "Mildly." The sweep of the Phillies could be the spark they needed to get on a roll. And with two players who throw 100 mph, Doval and Schmitt, (from third base), plus twin pitchers, who knows?

Bravo!
I really enjoyed last issue (https://conta.cc/42YAj6G) for different reasons: Pete Elman’s comments on the Warriors – my daughter and I are such fans of the Warriors and we watched every game they played for the last few years. Thanks to Pete!
And I also enjoyed the comments from photographer Rich Yee, re. Chuck Norris. My husband was a Master / Black Belt in Tang Soo Do and they sparred together once for fun -- a very long time ago! I always admired Chuck Norris.
Anyway – I always enjoy all kinds of sports and I thank you for bringing us all of the comments and photographs from all your staff. Have a great week and stay safe. “Carpe Diem” as always!

Hoop
Dreams
by Andy Dolich
| |
Walk through any neighborhood and you’ll see hundreds of portable basketball hoops in driveways, cul-de-sacs, streets, backyards, schoolyards, asphalt islands and patios. Hundreds of these hoops are no longer being used by young athletes anymore for multiple reasons.
Parents who no longer have kids around are trying to figure out how to re-purpose or get rid of the hoops.
My concept is crafting a pilot program to re-purpose these hoops and raise money for a selected community partner on improving the health and wellness of young people. A participating delivery partner could pick up the hoops, transfer to a warehouse to be sanitized and reconditioned, if necessary.
As you know, proactive community investment is more important than ever for the physical and mental health of young athletes throughout the Peninsula and beyond.
Hoop Dreams Program
1. Select a local community (with a significant basketball /sports or philanthropic partner as a test market.
2. Create a website in partnership with the participating entity, local youth sports-based organizations, pro team, colleges, high schools, TVs; Radio stations, corporate partners, Rotary Club, Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs and others.
3. Families use a customized Hoop Dreams website to confirm they want their hoop picked up and will pay a predetermined price. This fee would go to cover expenses and be donated to the designated charity.
4. The Hoop Dreams program will benefit families and communities to find these hoops new homes that will be used by young people and their families who aren’t able to afford them.
The New Normal is going to have to be the New Different on many levels of the youth sports, both physically and mentally. If the program has an upside in one market, it could work anywhere.
If you have any reaction to this idea or suggestions, please let me know. Write: theultimatesportsguide@gmail.com

Lou Seal on official rounds… “I was born on the Farallon Islands just west of the Golden Gate Bridge and I grew up right here in San Francisco. Currently I live under the Lefty O'Doul Bridge in the China Basin district of San Francisco. I love this spot since I'm swimming distance from the team's home, Oracle Park. Being so close gives me more time to do what I do best -- root for the greatest team of all time: the Giants!” Photo by Rich Yee.
Bay to Breakers is an annual San Francisco footrace typically on the third Sunday of May. The phrase Bay to Breakers reflects that the race starts at the northeast end of the downtown area and runs through the city to finish at the Great Highway where breakers crash onto Ocean Beach.
The course is 7.46 miles (12 km) long.
Bay to Breakers invites costumes and the 1986 edition set a Guinness World Record for being the world's largest footrace with 110,000 participants. The race was started in 1906 as a way to lift the city's spirits after
the disastrous earthquake.

Unsettling Times in Bay Area Sports
By Bruce Macgowan
| |
These are uncertain times for Bay Area sports fans. No one seems
to know if the Warriors' GM Bob Myers will be back next season. While it looks as if the Oakland A’s are bound for Las Vegas, a new possibility has arisen that they will stay rooted in the East Bay. And the Giants, after six seasons of mostly mediocre baseball, remain one of the most erratic and frustrating teams to watch in the game.
We’ll start with the Giants, because there is a little more certainty about their situation. The Giants are mediocre and streaky. They’ll win four of five and then lose three straight. They’ll score 17 runs in two games and then get shut out twice in a three-game series.
Perhaps the biggest problem with this team is that they lack passion and leadership. And what player on the Giants excites people enough to draw big crowds? There’s a reason why the Giants are only averaging around 25,000 a game. They may have some excellent young players, such as starting pitcher Logan Webb and infielders Thairo Estrada and Casey Schmitt. Yes, they have an electric young closer in Camilo Doval. And the Giants have two veteran outfielders, Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger, who are starting to heat up at the plate. But overall this is just not a very exciting team to watch.
Manager Gabe Kapler is very bright and likable but he’s also made some strange moves and seems to be more of a friend than a mentor-like figure. The 2023 Giants are more interesting than last year’s bunch, but expecting more than a .500 season in one of baseball’s toughest divisions is asking a lot.
Meanwhile, the Warriors are worried that Bob Myers might not return. One of the brightest front office people in pro sports, Myers has now worked for about a decade putting together some truly great teams. But the commitment of working long hours is daunting. Myers may be going through burnout, as there are reports that he really wants to spend more time with his family. The precious hours with them have been sharply curtailed over his time in the front office, and Myers may be realizing he has higher priorities than his job.
I vividly remember Myers holding an informal press briefing to explain the unpopular move of firing coach Mark Jackson, who had guided the Warriors to their first back-to-back playoff berths in nearly two decades to take a chance on a former NBA player who had never held a coaching job. Young star Stephen Curry and many of his teammates were really upset by the move, and when owner Joe Lacob was introduced during a halftime ceremony in one of the first games of the 2014-15 season, he was booed lustily by the fans. Myers, of course, was exonerated for making the smartest move by a GM in Warriors’ history, as his chosen coach Steve Kerr went on to guide the Warriors to four NBA titles over the next eight seasons.
There has been speculation that Myers is seeking a new challenge and would perhaps like to rebuild another club. The Washington Wizards have reportedly expressed some interest. But my gut feeling is that Myers is wrestling with the choice of putting his career on hold, or perhaps even walking away permanently. After all, how many more mountains does he really want to climb? It’s a tough call.
Finally, the Oakland A’s situation remains unresolved if we’re to believe the latest reports. The A’s have recently been offered a better deal for land on which to build a new ballpark in Las Vegas, but the sticky situation regarding tax payer involvement to help build a new play pen for owner John Fisher has not been resolved.
The A’s situation reminds me of Groundhog Day. Different times, different people involved but the same situation just repeats itself. This club has had a succession of owners since the mid-1990s who seem totally disengaged with East Bay fans. Were it not for front office baseball whiz Billy Beane, the A’s would probably be an American League version of the Cincinnati Reds or the Pittsburgh Pirates, two franchises which have tasted precious little success over the last two decades.

Memories of Oakland
2nd in a Series, The 1979 Athletics
| |
Former Oakland A’s infielder Mario Guerrero, circa 1979, once recorded a 45 and was told by the author to keep his day job
|
The 1979 Athletics
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
OAKLAND–The similarities between the 1979 Oakland A’s and the 2023 Oakland A’s are truly remarkable. The 1979 team ended last (7th place) with a 54-108 record. Their attendance was 306,763, an average of 3,984 per game, the worst since their days in Philadelphia.
It involves, (a) Owners, (b) city of Oakland, (c) poor performance on the field (d) very low attendance (e) one of the lowest payrolls in Major League Baseball and (f) a future Hall of Fame player.
That season Charlie O. Finley nearly sold the team to buyers who would have relocated to New Orleans, but back then the city of Oakland had smarter representatives and were much more community-minded than today and the city refused to release the A’s from their lease with the Oakland Coliseum.
A year later in 1980, Finley was forced to turn to local buyers and sold the A’s to Walter Haas, Jr., president of Levi Strauss & Co for $12.7 million. This 1979 A’s team had many colorful personalities.
I remember Mario Guerrero, who played shortstop whose hobby was singing, as he gave me a copy of his 45rpm recording in Spanish of A Mi Manera, the classic Frank Sinatra, My Way, one of his many big hits. When I listened to Mario’s version I had nothing but to tell him, “Do not quit your day job.” He was a good guy but not a good singer. He took it well and laughed all the time with me about it.
Tony Armas had an arm from right field. Many used to say his arm was raw and not educated, but he was one of their best players and in spring training and he (who was shy) would give me some great interviews. His good friend on that team was Dwayne Murphy, who played center field.
Mitch “The Rage” Page, who can forget him? He hustled all the time and played with a lot of passion and then there was catcher Mike Heath with Wayne Gross at third base and guys on the mound like Matt Keough and Mike Morgan and many others with personality.
Rickey Henderson. That was the brightest note in 1979 playing left field as a rookie, very fast who would go on to steal 1,406 bases, the current record. After a 25-year career with various teams, including the Yankees, he seemed to always come back to Oakland where he had four different stints, from 1979 to 1998.
He is the Hall of Fame player of that 1979 team. Rickey was elected to the Hall in 2009. When the team was in a hitting slump, he would get a free pass to first, steal second (and maybe third) and then score on a sac fly. That became known as “The Rickey Run.” Nothing more needs to be said.
“There was only one Rickey Henderson in baseball,” said George Steinbrenner, former Yanks chairman. “He was the greatest leadoff hitter of all time.”
In 1979 Julio González was my broadcast partner as the A’s carried all home weekend games, plus other selected games on BOX 19. To our left, a year earlier, was Larry Baer, now a top executive with the San Francisco Giants. (He was a student at Cal and was broadcasting weekend games. Since the A’s owner never contracted a commercial radio station, he gave the rights for $1 to the Cal Berkeley campus radio station.)
Yes, 1979, was a year to remember.
| |
A year earlier, a nattily attired Larry Baer (right), now president and CEO of the San Francisco Giants, was among several Cal students broadcasting 16 games on KLAX.

Looking to Fix Blame for the
Dub's Season!
by Howard Pearlstein
It’s like that old time party game of Limbo – how low can you go?
I have the impression that some of the sports writers actually hate the Warriors. Looking for someone or something to blame on the loss, as if L’s weren’t always going to be an integral part of a system that loves W’s.
Nope –gotta find something to blame.
From their never ending favorite: “It was Draymond and his punch…”
To: “Should Steve Kerr be fired? There’s been some speculation about that!” (In your own damn column.)
“Jordan Poole needs to be traded. “
“Kuminga needs to be traded.”
“Klay needs to play from the bench.”
“Kuminga needs to be played more.”
“It was trading away a 7-foot tall teenager to get back the 6’2” player who was his own highlight reel in last year’s playoffs.”
“It was Anthony Lamb because of … something.”
Or maybe they don’t hate the Warriors, but their attitudes have changed from, “We love you because you’re out there putting it all on the line every game,” to, “We love you when you win. We are Entitled to that. When you fail that you fail us…”
A little too far down the road to creepy.
Do they just not understand the concept of team sports? The overall reality, like the most basic laws of Zen: “The love of W’s creates the existence of the L’s.”
Don’t know the cause, but in Oakland we saw them as the guys who could do something none of us could do, and win or lose. We loved them for getting out there and doing it -- usually with style and grace and a sense of humor. (We all miss Andre Iguodala). They embodied all that was Basketball with a combination of innate talent and ferociously rigorous programs of practice. And they still do.
These days, in San Francisco, seems more like some of – many of? -- the fans and the writers seem “Entitled” and it's that sense of entitlement I see which is really a problem, because unfulfilled entitlement demands blame. The Entitled point of view means the games and the W-L record are all about THEM, the, “See how great I AM when the Dubs win,” as if the W’s add to their own personal worthiness, and L’s diminish it.
When that’s going on, winning a game with a final shot isn’t cheered as much as it’s celebrated with ugly meanness. And losing with denial. Reminds me of an ugly thing I’ve seen before – a Big 10 college team, fans after a game, summing it up as either, “WE WON!” or, “THEY LOST!”
Be that as it may, I was pleased to see that Ann Killion, whom I regard as the best sports writer in these parts, mentioned something which Steve Kerr addressed this year (and which -- patting my own back, bad shoulder not withstanding – is something I wrote about in this column during the past year) -- that winning out in the playoffs year-after-year means having a playing season two months longer than other teams have. Two FEWER months each year for rest and rehab, fishing and family, and for rebalancing one’s mental health. And since Steve Kerr made a point of it publicly, every writer on the Dubs beat should know it. Unless, as sometimes seems to be the case, they assume they know more about the team dynamics than he does.
He's a winning coach and knows this from experience: Continued success can have as much curse to it as blessing.
* * *
Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Miguel Trauco scores first MLS goal, Quakes host FC Dallas next Saturday
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to LAFC 2-1 on Saturday night at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. The match saw defender Miguel Trauco score his first MLS goal.
LAFC took a 1-0 lead through Stipe Biuk in the third minute. San Jose responded with six shots until finding the equalizer in the 52nd minute. Miguel Trauco fired a shot from long distance that went through a crowded penalty box and bounced into goalkeeper John McCarthy’s net.
The two teams continued looking for their second goal until LAFC found the game-winner via penalty taken by Carlos Vela in second half stoppage time
After a scoreless first half, LA took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Martin Caceres in the 60th minute. San Jose looked for the equalizer, but the Galaxy later doubled the score through Dejan Joveljić in second half stoppage time. The Quakes pulled a goal back three minutes later through Ousseni Bouda but were unable to level the scoring in the final moments of the match.

Oakland Roots Fall 3-1 to Top of the
League Sacramento
Sacramento got off to a fast start when Keko Gontán picked up the loose ball and curled it in off the far post to give the home side the 1-0 lead. Sacramento continued to pour on the pressure as Oakland keeper Paul Blanchette was called upon to make a big save to keep Oakland in the match inside of the first 25 minutes. Oakland built their way back into the match with the best chance coming in the 38th minute when Rito found himself open on the back post but his shot went wide of the Sacramento goal. The half would end with the home side Sacramento in the lead 1-0.
Sacramento got a quick early second half goal when Keko Gontán drove at the center of the defense and was never stopped before firing in the goal to give Republic the 2-0 lead. The home side quickly followed that up when Sebastian Herrera was fed through the line to finish 1v1 against Blanchette to give his side the 3-0 lead inside of 60 minutes. Danny Barbir pulled one back for Oakland to make it 3-1 in the 62nd minute. Coach Noah Delgado made 5 substitutions in search of an answer but Oakland were unable to find the goals needed to level the match.

Gordon Makes History, Qualifies for NCAA
West First Round
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In what has been a record-breaking first season at the collegiate level, Penelopea Gordon is not done making history. The Rochester, Minnesota native became the first freshman Gael in program history to qualify for the NCAA West First Round, doing so in the 800m.
Gordon's stock has been on the rise since early in the season, when she finished seventh overall in the 600m at the UW Preview indoor meet on January 14. Since then, her times keep dropping, and her finishes keep improving. She first ran the 800m as a Gael at the Mike Fanelli Classic and posted a time of 2:17.32. Over her last three attempts, however, she has shaved over 10 seconds off that time, culminating in a 2:07.27 at the Portland Distance Carnival last weekend. That time is the second-fastest 800m time in Saint Mary's history, and she finished third in the event behind an Olympic bronze medalist and an All-American.

Carl Cox Motorsport New Zealand Sidecar Team Attending the AHRMA Classic MotoFest™
of Monterey
MONTEREY, Calif., May 19, 2023 – The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) announces the participation of the All Ladies Carl Cox Motorsport New Zealand Sidecar Team during the AHRMA Classic MotoFest™ of Monterey this coming July.
The Team comes to the historic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca track at the invitation of Laroque Motorsports and AMA Hall of Fame Inductee Larry Coleman.
The Sidecar Racing Association describes this high-speed sport as “using 3-wheeled motorcycles that can hit speeds of 160 mph. This is the only form of motorsport where the passenger and driver both steer the vehicle. Between the incredible cornering speed and the acrobatics of the passengers, sidecars are the most amazing sight on the racing circuit.”

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
