501 Fan
I'm new to Sports Today, and am blown away by the coverage of just
about every sports event in NorCal. Plus the incredible photography.
I have on my 501 Levi's, and in honor of Issue #501, I am on my way to send the Publisher a check for $5.01. I know it's not a lot, but I'll try to make it a habit. I've got a ton of back issues to go over, which should get me through the weekend.
I hope your request for donations was successful From what I can tell,
you DESERVE it!

The
Student-Athlete
by Andy Dolich
| |
The Roman poet, Juvenal, coined the message, “Mens sana in corpore sano,” 1,900 years ago. It translates to “Sound Mind, Sound Body.” The term is often used to describe scholarship athletes in collegiate sports as “Student-Athletes.”
Cal has 850 student-athletes competing in 30 sports. Stanford rosters have 900 in 36 sports. When graduation diplomas are handed out at these two homes of higher education, how many of the cap and gown wearers are heading off to training camp with professional sports contracts in their hands and money in the bank? Maybe a dozen at each institution?
Hundreds of these student-athletes are continuing their education on the graduate level or beginning their career journeys regionally, nationally and globally in every discipline you can imagine.
The Pac-12, aka “Conference of Champions,” began playing sports in 1916, amassing 553 NCAA men’s and women’s national titles and hundreds of Olympic medal winners, many of them gold.
The downfall of the Pac-12 should be used as a case study for graduate business schools. It’s a tale laced with a lack of teamwork, leadership and trust and closed-door negotiations for multiple millions of media dollars. The Pac-12 as we once knew it is gone. Oregon State and Washington State now remain in the biggest conference upheaval in college athletics history.
As we know, the color of the fluid which flows through the revenue engines of all sports, including collegiate athletics, is green, no matter what color the teams select for their uniforms.
Cal and Stanford, along with other campuses of higher education from coast-to-coast, are scrambling to have an open and honest discussion within their multi-constituent communities whether they want to be institutions of higher learning or repositories of higher earnings.
In light of Stanford and Cal making the move to the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Cal’s Chancellor Carol Christ has said that, “Our student-athletes can continue to thrive, and our program can continue to excel in a manner that reflects our values and budgetary realities.”
Cal and Stanford student athletes and their coaches are still processing this left coast to right coast move. Stanford is a private institution, Cal is public. These conference changing types of major financial decisions are much more complex for Cal than Stanford, due to all of the approvals needed from a public university. Nonetheless, the decades of the Pac-12’s history is now just that, as Cal and Stanford will join the now 18-school conference in 2024.
Women’s teams and Olympic sports for both Cal and Stanford are now entering into a vastly different playing field. The future is going to be difficult to predict but leave it to a recent top notch recruit for one of the Bay Area’s athletic programs who said, “I chose the school on its academic reputation, I honestly think nothing can change my mind. I’m certain my school will find a conference where it belongs.”
It is critically important that Juvenal’s brilliance of Sound Mind, Sound Body doesn’t disappear forever at colleges and universities, on behalf of their talented men and women on playing fields and classrooms from coast-to-coast.

Cal's Move to the ACC:
Some Unanswered Questions
By Robert A. Moselle, Esq.
https://www.cce-mcle.com/aboutus
In a September 2nd email from Jim Knowlton, Cal's Director of Athletics to the "Cal Family," he detailed how he and Chancellor Christ had evaluated various courses of action after USC and UCLA left the Pac-12. Below are two areas I would ask Cal's brilliant minds to study so they can inform the public of certain factors which they may not have considered and advise us of their impact on our health and our local economy.
The email states that 19 of their 30 sports will have "Little or No impact at all on their travel requirements." I'm no math whiz, but that leaves 11 sports, not listed, which will have Major impacts; football, of course, and presumably basketball, volleyball and others not listed, Male and Female. The email names the teams they will face: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, UNC, NC State, Notre Dame, Pitt, SMU, Stanford, U.VA, VA Tech and Wake Forest. With the obvious exception of Stanford, the closest school is Louisville, 2,500 miles away.
The First Question: what will be the total mileage of all the flights, each way, for all sports, by both Cal teams and the teams which travel here? What will be the total carbon emissions from these flights, and the resultant damage to the environment? To calculate use an average of 6,000 miles round-trip, for both home and away games, for every contest for all 11 sports. So, 10 football games would total 60,000 miles, 20 basketball games 120,000 miles, and so on.
The Second Question, and perhaps on a brighter note is: what will the benefit be to the local economy from all these teams which travel and stay in the Bay Area? In other words, HEE HAW! A bunch of Southerners are comin' to town and they will be Spendin' some Dough! How much and where? Conversely, what will the costs be to fly, house and feed all the Cal teams in each away game, for all 11 sports, as they visit exotic new destinations?
We could ask how the "student-athletes" will spend more time on their play books and less time on their textbooks, and still receive that acclaimed superior education, but that would hit below the belt. Perhaps the charter flights mentioned in the email will have Study Halls. "This is your Captain. The Biology Exam has been moved to Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. Buckle up."

The Oakland A's look a little better, having just swept the Los Angeles Angels for their third sweep of a series this season. They are now 42-95 with 25 games to go. They could become the worst A's team using the 162-game season. (The 162-game season format started in 1962.).
What year was the worst Oakland A's Win/Lose record set? Big hint: It was Ricky Henderson's rookie year!
As of Sunday, 09/03, the Kansas City Royals are now the worst club in baseball with a 42-96 record.

Trey Lance Redux –
Does Owning A Team Mean You
Own The Person?
by Howard Pearlstein
Last Friday Trey was traded, and the 9ers and the universe both managed to F--- it up one more time.
First of all, he was a good guy with lots of talent and I’m sure they were right, a huge upside when drafted. But injuries and coincidences kept him from being able to develop it on the job.
First season -- broken index finger. Second season -- broken ankle. People had to wonder if he was a hard luck guy.
So Jimmy G took over, for a minute or two, and then he went down. Calf injury. He came back and tore a ligament in his thumb in December, followed by a broken foot later that month.
Now it wasn’t just Trey. It was definitely some sort of curse.
Down to draft pick #262. A kid with a great four-year record from a tough Big 12 college who looked like he was 12 years old. Well, we already knew one low draft pick Baby-Faced killer who took his team all the way – Steph Curry.
So why not? And there was something about him, his stillness in the pocket, reminded us of Joe Montana. OK, a reminder of stance isn’t the whole deal, but it was a start, and that was a helluva lot more than we had.
And damn – he was good! All the way to the NFC Championship game and then the Eagles’ linebacker tore his throwing arm apart.
Definitely a curse.
Trey Lance never got his chance.
He had all the tools except NFL experience, and where was he going to get that? Purdy was healed and ready to go. Sam Darnold was in as an experienced backup, so the likelihood of starting Trey over him, slim to none.
It was unfair and a bitter drag to see a person’s potentially good -- even great -- career destroyed in the bud. This was an actual human being, one guy, not a position, not a team, not a draft pick, not money spent – but a person. We took him out of the draft and spent a lot to make sure no other team who wanted him could get him, maybe even one that had the wherewithal to bring him along behind someone with experience.
To be fair, we thought we were that team, until the football gods laughed.
Unable to complete the deal we made, he was too good to leave in football purgatory. It was on us to get him somewhere he could flourish, get the time and space to become what he could be, maybe all the way to Pro Bowl level. Even playing against the 49ers. It would have been the decent thing to do. Fix the mistake by doing the right thing.
The 9ers needed to bite the bullet, forget the trade picks and the money and do the right thing. But they didn’t. The TEAM got the best trade with Dallas. The young man got screwed.
To Dallas?!? A memory of those old movies where the slave asks the Owner: “Please don’t sell me down the river.”
And people were worried “What if he becomes great and embarrasses us?”
Well, so what? There was Y.A. Tittle.
Even worse, the twofer pulled off by Jim Harbaugh: don't reinstate Alex Smith as starter after he recovered which undermined Colin Kaepernick’s career -- not giving him a couple years learning time behind Alex. (Aaron Rodgers had three years behind Brett Favre before he had to take all the weight.) Harbaugh was using his own experience to improve Alex’s general game with footwork coaching, but – I think – his own experience got him stuck in the College Coach Gestalt of “Only have three, maybe four years to get this kid all the way." Best of intentions.
But that destroyed the trusted compact: Job Survives Injury.
My fantasy: Purdy’s 49ers vs Trey’s Cowboys -- NFC Championship game.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Bears Rout North Texas To Open 2023 Season
Cal Scores Most Points In Game Since 2015
DENTON, Texas – In the Cal football team's first game with Jake Spavital as its offensive coordinator, the Bears did something they hadn't done since the last time he was the offensive coordinator.

Cal led 33-21 at halftime and then shut out the Mean Green in the second half. It was the most points the Bears have scored in a half since amassing 35 in a victory over Texas in 2016, when Spavital served one season as the team's offensive coordinator.

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff | |
It's All About The A's!
In 1979, the A's franchise went 54-108. The current team will have to go 13-12 to avoid setting a new record.
To tie the franchise loss record of the Philadelphia A's of 1916, they would have to close out this season with a
3-22 run. In a 154-game season, the 1916 club was
36-117.
Looking over this question and thinking about the worst of this and that, I ended up being more interested in why the owners of baseball went from a 154-game to a
162-game format. The answer is here: https://bit.ly/3EooOeJ.
It's pretty interesting...
Go Red Sox!

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and
Spanish versions, too!
