Giants Back to Earth
by Bruce Macgowan
|
|
There is something comforting about baseball being played in front of fans, instead of those absurd cardboard cut outs we saw in the surreal 2020 season. And even though ballparks are only about 1/3 full this spring, the familiar hum of the crowd is a sound that everyone who goes to the park finds reassuring, especially with the pandemic still gripping America. No doubt many took for granted the healing power of baseball and when I ventured out to the Giants beautiful waterfront ballpark for a Sunday game against the rival Dodgers, I realized how much I missed that crowd noise.
Meanwhile, the Giants missed their chance to show everyone how good they have been, as the defending champion Dodgers brought them crashing back to earth in a three game sweep. San Francisco was shoved back into third place, a spot where most pundits predicted they would finish.
The Giants had built up the best record in baseball coming into the weekend and they were especially hot after sweeping a four game set in Cincinnati, blasting the Reds for 19 runs in the last game of that series.
However, things can change quickly and over the course of a long season winning streaks may come to a screeching halt. A slump can suddenly rear its ugly head and the Giants better hope that the humiliating wake up call this past weekend is not an indication of things to come.
In the three games, Dodger pitching handcuffed the Giants on just 15 hits. Meanwhile, San Francisco starter Anthony DeSciafani, who had won four of his first five decisions as a Giant while flashing an earned run average barely over 2.00, got blasted in the final game Sunday. LA hitters tattooed him for 11 hits and 10 runs, including two home runs in just two and two-thirds innings of work in an 11-5 rout.
|
|

Previous to the LA series, the Giants had been one of baseball’s great early season stories, mainly because of sterling starting pitching. DeSciafani, Kevin Gausman, (who has developed a terrific split-fingered fastball,) former Dodger Alex Wood, one-time staff ace Johnny Cueto and young righthander Logan Webb have given manager Gabe Kapler as solid a rotation as he could ask for.
The Giants defense has also been outstanding, allowing just 15 errors in the first 47 games. Veterans Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt have kept the infield secure, while young Maricio Dubon has shown that he can play three different positions in the infield and outfield and play them all well.
And of course Buster Posey is still one of the best defensive catchers in the game. What is most encouraging about Posey’s return, after taking a year off, has been his batting average and home run production. Posey has been among the league leaders in both categories and the serious hip problems that were dogging him the last few years seem to be a thing of the past.
While the bullpen is still a work in progress, along with the outfield, this is a team that is a lot of fun to watch. Virtually no one figured that they would be this good, although it is still much too early to say the Giants are going to continue to contend for the NL West’s top spot. Two of the best teams in baseball, LA and the San Diego Padres also reside in the NL West, so the Giants still have to figure to be the division’s ‘dark horse’ team.

Second baseman Donovan Solano went 2-for-4 with an RBI, his first hits since returning from the injured list. Caption and photo by Darren Yamashita.
The Dodgers showed why they’re the defending champions as they came into San Francisco having won five straight and left town red hot with eight wins in a row. Even with stars Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager sitting because of injuries, the Dodgers have a deep roster, with plenty of power and top-level pitching. LA will get a chance to play the Giants four more times later this week, so it is vital that San Francisco straightens things out and wins a few in LA to show everyone that they still mean business.
When new GM Farhan Zaidi brought in Gabe Kapler to be the Giants new skipper, there was much skepticism. Kapler had done a mediocre job in his first assignment at Philadelphia and following in the footsteps of future Hall of Fame manager Bruce Bochy was going to be a daunting task.
But with a cast of obscure veterans such as Darren Ruf, Donovan Solano and Alex Dickerson, and hungry youngsters like Dubon, Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Slater, the Giants seem to have a team full of grit and character. And with a little luck and continued good health, they could continue to be a pleasant surprise.
After four years of playing bad or at best mediocre baseball, Giants fans are not only excited to be able to get back to the park, but they are encouraged by what they’ve seen thus far. And this is still true, even after a disheartening weekend against the Dodgers.
Long-time Bay Area sportscaster Bruce Macgowan has been recording his 45 years of broadcast experience for a forthcoming book to be published shortly.

On Tuesday, May 11 Major League Baseball and the Oakland A’s released
this statement in part:
"MLB is concerned with the rate of progress on the A's new ballpark effort with local officials and other stakeholders in Oakland. The A's have worked very hard to advance a new ballpark in downtown Oakland for the last four years, investing significant resources while facing multiple roadblocks. We know they remain deeply committed to succeeding in Oakland, and with two other sports franchises recently leaving the community, their commitment to Oakland is now more important than ever.”
Now the A’s have MLB’s blessings to look at relocation possibilities.
Franchise shifting is a modern-day sports soap opera that exposes billion dollar business decisions, behind closed door deal-making by elected officials, league commissioners, business executives, and team owners. These constituencies are participating in the most significant referendum on disposable income for sports in Bay Area history.
Oakland has lost its way with the heart and soul of its home teams and millions of their loyal fans. They have been spectators as San Francisco, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Las Vegas and Inglewood have built:
-
Pac Bell (now Oracle) Park opened in 2000 -- cost $375 million dollars
-
Levi’s Stadium opened in 2014 -- cost $1.5 billion dollars
-
Golden One Center opened in 2016 -- cost $650 million dollars
-
Chase Center opened in fall of 2019 -- cost $1.5 billion dollars
-
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2020 -- cost $2 billion dollars
-
So-Fi Stadium in Inglewood in 2020 -- cost $5.5 billion dollars
While we are waiting for this ongoing ballpark saga to show some signs of reality, I gave these two baseball standards some new lyrics to while away the time.
There Used To Be a Ballpark
“And there used to be a Oakland Coliseum where the field was warm and green
And the teams played big games with a joy we'd never seen
And the air was always fragrant from the bratwurst and the beer
Yes, there used to be a year-round multi-sports home with three teams right here.
And there used to be World Champs, Hall of Famers and sellout crowds
With fireworks exploding across the Oakland hills framed in clouds
And the fans watched in wonder, how they'd laugh, how they'd cheer
Yes, there used to be a Coliseum with a Black Hole right here
Now the offspring of Raider Nation and Athletics try to find it
Because their parents' teams were constantly threatening to split
Their magic moments will end up playing out on another city's street
With millions of hometown fans left with a humongous Coliseum Swap Meet
Oaktown sports fans used to get so rowdy
The welcome to opposing teams was never “Howdy!”
The summer, fall and winter were their times to cheer
Now many who wear their colors will soon be shedding a tear.
Yes, there used to be an Oakland Alameda County Coliseum right here.”
Take Me Out To The Ball Game
"Take me out to an A’s game
Take me out with the crowd
Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks
I’d be heartbroken if they never come back.
Let me root, root, root
For the Green & Gold team
If they don't stay it's a shame
For it's one,
Two,
Three sites you're out!
At the “Where’s the new ballpark game?”
All they need is just one logical choice
They could hit a home run
There isn’t a unified voice
To bring back all the fun
And it's… One, Two, Three teams..."
If you are a talented lyricist, try adding all of these departed Oakland teams
to this sad song: Oaks (3), Larks, Raiders, Warriors, Invaders, Golden Seals Skates, Banshees, Clippers, Stompers, Breakers, Aces, Bay Bombers, Panthers, Slammers, Strokes and whatever I may have left out.

Everybody knows Steph Curry is only 141 three-pointers away from Ray Allen's NBA three-point record of 2973. On the other end of the spectrum is one of the best all-time NBA players ever.
Shaq O'Neal is a four-time NBA champion and a 15-time NBA

except one -- three pointers.
How many three-pointers did Shaq have during his

Laguna Seca Volunteer Association Established to Support WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with
Experienced Volunteers
MONTEREY, Calif., May 18, 2021 – A new year brings new opportunities as the Laguna Seca Volunteer Association and Laguna Seca Recreation Area management agree on a long-term relationship. The new not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Laguna Seca Volunteer Association establishes a body of enthusiastic and experienced individuals to support the County of Monterey-owned Laguna Seca Recreation Area and the events held at its iconic race circuit.
The Laguna Seca Volunteer Association (LSVA) will be managed by a five-person executive board, all of whom have years of volunteer leadership experience at the facility. The LSVA executive committee is comprised of:
Lee Ames – President and Chairman, Morgan Broadhead – Vice President, Ryan Bailey – Secretary/Treasurer, Shea Eby – Director, Bryan Mutoza – Director
“This past year has had many ups and downs due to the pandemic and in finalizing the structure and leadership of the volunteer association,” admitted Lee Ames, president and chairman of LSVA. “Many of us first assisted with last August’s Driver Appreciation Weekend to get to know some of the new management team, and over the course of the past few months and events, have grown to understand that we all have a shared vision to ensure a safe, pleasurable and memorable experience for everyone who comes into the Laguna Seca Recreation Area.”
Initial talks began in January 2020 between the former longtime SCRAMP volunteers and the new management firm, A&D Narigi Consulting LLC, which was unanimously selected by the County of Monterey Board of Supervisors, to establish a suitable and viable organization that embraced volunteerism and the community. With the county’s support, and the new LSVA executive committee, the organization was formed.
“As Lee indicated, there were some rough patches during a challenging year, but we worked closely together to create a sound organization for years to come,” added John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “The dedicated men and women who have volunteered here for years, which includes several local service organizations, have an unbridled passion, expertise and camaraderie that give Laguna Seca Recreation Area its unique soul. Everyone shares the same vision of improving the experience for our guests, series, participants and sponsors. I have fully enjoyed getting to know so many fine individuals, and their passion for Laguna Seca and expertise in putting on our racing events.”
The LSVA Board of Directors will be comprised of six additional directors with specific responsibility that encompasses all areas of the race and events, such as paddock, first aid, medical, hospitality, concessions, and vehicle control. There are more than 250 volunteers who are committed to LSVA. In addition, there are 20 area service clubs that are providing support services working under the direction of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Volunteer Coordinator Kalina McKinney, a new position added by Narigi to support the hundreds of volunteers. “Without them, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca would not have the fine reputation that it has today,” Narigi added. “Going forward, this will be a team approach with management and volunteers working together to improve upon what has been established to ensure all have an enjoyable experience.
“We are also very appreciative of the efforts and thank the Laguna Seca Raceway Foundation board of directors under the leadership of its president Ross Merrill as they supplied funding for the LSVA legal expenses required to complete the formation of the new organization,” said Narigi.

ONE!
Shaq attempted 22 three-pointers during his entire career and converted only one. It is hard to imagine a player with 11,196 buckets in his NBA career had only one three-pointer, isn't it?
It was on February 16, 1996 when the Orlando Magic inbounded the ball with two seconds left on the clock. "One of the ugliest bank shots ever in the history of the NBA was made by Shaq."
Shaq's final points were scored as a Boston Celtic in 2011 and none involved a three-pointer. This link, https://bit.ly/3yv5Xun, will take you to many more of Shaq's facts...
