Issue No. 422
Resurgent West Coast Basketball
Saint Mary's upset Gonzaga, the number No. 1 team in the country,
67-57, on Saturday evening on their home court

The WCC Has Earned Respect!
Robert Moselle

I just watched Joe Lunardi, college BB guru on ESPN, at halftime in the Duke/Virginia game, state: "The Mountain West and the WCC both have more depth than the ACC." As the weekend proceeded, Joey Brackets' comments proved prescient.

University of San Francisco's men's basketball team (23-8, 10-6 WCC) secured their third season sweep of WCC Conference play with a 78-62 win over San Diego (14-15, 7-9 WCC) at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

And for la piece de resistance, the Saint Mary's Gaels have just SHOCKED THE NATION on ESPN as they beat #1 Gonzaga, 67-57. ESPN announcers, surrounded by rabid fans, gave well-deserved credit to Gaels' Coach Randy Bennett who "Knows the Zags better than anyone after from years of competition." Congratulations Coach Bennett!

Sports Today's Mission, that Rodney Dangerfield, (as much as we love and admire him), no longer be the Poster Boy for West Coast sports, (NorCal in particular), is a success! WCC's Gonzaga (of course), is in the Big Dance, as are USF and Saint Mary's, PLUS Mountain West's Boise State, Wyoming, and Colorado State are all in the mix.

Keep up the good work, S/T! As Rodney said, "Where I grew up, the football team was so tough that after they sacked the quarterback they went after his family." That's what I'm talkin' about! NorCal teams fear nobody.

The Mystery of Car 54 Has Been Solved

When, in the course of human events, the onslaught of news becomes unbearable, it can lead to circuitry-overload. This Haiku, as important as it may be to have this great mystery solved, is also an example of what can happen when world affairs supplant our focus on Sports. Quote of the Week
February is always a bad month for TV sports. Football is gone, basketball is plodding along in the annual midseason doldrums, and baseball is not even mentioned.
It is the perfect time to take some time off.

Memo to KNBR
TO KNBR Brass: I have a question: WTF?

Larry Krueger and Rod Brooks get axed while Mr. T stays? You let Joe Montana and Jerry Rice go so you can keep Jim Druckenmiller?

Krueger and Brooks are knowledgeable, funny, lively, and enjoyable. Mr. T? Let's just say he "should have went" to more English classes while at Arizona. Of course, he has a vast knowledge of craft beers, point spreads which usually prove wrong, movies for adolescents and plenty of other random topics which serve no purpose on a sports radio show.

I would listen to TKB in my car as I figured 2/3's of a sports show was better than none, but now, "This is Mr. T. for" (insert commercial here) is not worth my time.

I'll watch for the "K" and the "B" of this former show to reappear soon. Keep Sports Today! informed, gents, and we'll help spread the word.

Possible Federal Intervention?
Is this crazy but can the RICO Act be applied to all 30 MLB owners as to what they’ve squandered in public tax subsidies, let alone their crude treatment of labor? Why do they get to own anything?

They should all stick to cryptocurrency. They operate in Mafiosi-style and purchase these teams to walk freely through the dressing rooms as did Trump with his Miss Universe possession.

Perhaps baseball’s done. Oakland would save millions.

What's Wrong with Michigan sports?
They have a tyrannical football coach, fresh off rejection from his NFL head-coach applications, whose resume includes the stab-in-the-back of Alex Smith and a blown 49ers Super Bowl, but who was rewarded with a multi-million-dollar salary as college head coach, paid by the taxpayers of the Wolverine state.

Enter basketball coach Juwan Howard, a member of Michigan's famed "Fab Five," whose Final Four appearances were vacated due to scandals, but who are fixtures on ESPN as commentators and "analysts" with worthless opinions. Howard blew his top and attacked an opposing coach in a post game handshake ceremony, upset at a called timeout with 15 seconds left in the game and a 15 point lead.

In a video of the scuffle, Wisconsin's coach Greg Gard seems to grab Howard when he doesn't offer a handshake, and the two appear to have a heated exchange. Players and coaches for each team then step in to separate the head coaches but Howard squeezes his way back into the center of the crowd and throws a punch, which appears to connect with the head of Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft. A scrum with players, coaches and others on the court ensued. The Big Ten Conference suspended Howard for five games. Howard was also issued a $40,000 fine, the Big Ten said in a statement.

Now there are calls for the post game handshake ritual to be scrapped in all games. How about it is only scrapped when it involves Michigan? This important gesture of sportsmanship must not be abandoned because of one aberrant, eminently non-teachable moment.

Reviving Familiar Names...
Opening Day for the Oakland A's

Missing
the Grand Old Game

By Dave Newhouse
With baseball’s labor negotiations ongoing, uncertainty — and fear — exists that the 2022 season is in jeopardy, from a late start to a shortened schedule. But baseball fans who’ve been through these dragged-out negotiations before mustn’t lose faith. Because The Grand Old Game will resume — sometime.

However, if you are a true fan, then regardless of whether the season amounts to 162 games or 62, you’ll stay the course. Thus remembering the names of baseball’s principle figures won’t become an issue because they reside permanently inside your heart.

I won’t have that problem, for those baseball names are etched in my mind, although I’m still trying to process the retirement of Giants catcher Duster Rosey, a personal favorite. And, though, longtime umpire Singing Joe East wasn’t necessarily a favorite, he will be missed, too.

Commissioner Rob Fredman is trying his best to get the regular season rolling on time, and fingers are crossed on that slim possibility. But aren’t you excited to see Angels outfielder Mike Sturgeon back in uniform after missing the entire 2021 season?

Sturgeon’s versatile teammate, Shohei Ogami, and Phillies outfielder Bryce Harpist were league MVPs last year, so how can we forget them? Likewise, Silver Slugger winners Aaron Grudge of the Yankees and Xander Bogart of the Red Sox are fixed in our minds. And we’re also eager to watch two rising stars in Fernando Tattoo and Vladimir Guitar Jr. of the Padres.

Closer to home, A’s and Giants supporters can’t wait to see their favorite players back on the diamond, strike or lockout notwithstanding.

Oakland fans are hopeful that Billy Beanie, A’s vice president of baseball operations, will find a way to keep the team’s cornerstone duo, third baseman Matt Chapstick and first baseman Matt Ocean, even though Beanie has a track record of unloading key players.

Other Oaktown favorites returning in 2022, at some point, are pitchers Lee Trivino, Frankie Montana, and Chris Bassoon. Ah, these musical-sounding ballplayers; must be something in the air. But I’m anxious to watch Chad Fender, Tony Camp, Stephen Biscotty, Skye Jolt, and the always entertaining Elvis Andreas at shortstop. And let’s welcome new A’s manager Mark Kotspring.

The Giants are seeking another postseason appearance under skipper Babe Kapler, who has a promising battery in pitcher Hogan Webb and catchers Joey Bartstop and Curt Casaba. The infield looks solid with Heaven Longorio, Brandon Crawdad, Marlin LaStella, and Brandon Colt. But the outfield must produce in returnees Steven Rugger, Darin Gruff, and Mike Yaz.

So, you see, there’s nothing to remembering names if they are baseball names. Time simply can’t interrupt such loyalty. As further proof, two notable names, Sony La Russa and Gusty Baker, are back managing the White Sox and Astros, respectively.

All this familiarity makes me want to sing: “Take Me Out To The Stall Game….”

Oakland A's
On Thursday, February 17, the Oakland City Council voted to certify the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for our waterfront ballpark project at Jack London Square.

This is a significant milestone for the project and comes after years of work with the City, local community members, and organizations to analyze and outline how our project will adhere to the highest of environmental standards. The project will clean up an industrial site with private dollars and return public access to the waterfront with more than 18 acres of public parks and open greenspace.

Our waterfront ballpark is a once-in-a-generation project, creating transformative environmental and community benefits for Oakland, and setting the stage for more World Championships for our fans.

We thank our fans, community members, and civic leaders who shared their support during the EIR process and in public meetings. While this is the furthest we have come in securing a new ballpark in Oakland for the Athletics, we have more work to do. We now look forward to finalizing the development agreement and community benefits agreement before a vote later this year.

At least the better team won the Super Bowl
two weeks ago.

The losing Cincinnati Bengals were the fourth team to reach the Super Bowl with 7 losses with a 10-7
regular season record. The first three, with a
16-game regular season, were 9-7.

Only one of these four teams won the Super Bowl.
I'll make it easy with a multiple choice question.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Michelle Kuiper, the wife of beloved San Francisco Giants play-by-play announcer Duane Kuiper, passed away over the weekend. She was 64.

The Giants released a statement from the family regarding her death on Sunday.

“We are heartbroken to announce that Michelle Kuiper, Duane’s beloved wife of 36 years, passed away unexpected this past Sunday morning,” the family statement read. “Michelle, born on April 30, 1957, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and daughter who raised her children to be active members of their community.”

“She was a fierce advocate of women’s rights and it was important to her that her children and two granddaughters grow up to understand the importance of gender equity,” the statement continued. “Duane and their children, Cole and Dannon, are surrounded by family and loved ones at this difficult time and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
The cadets at Everett Alvarez High School take pride in their NJROTC unit

Local NJROTC volunteer groups gain valuable experience at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

MONTEREY, Calif., Feb. 24, 2022 – Next time you park at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, you’ll be helping local teens practice organization and teamwork.

Parking lot management is key to any large event running smoothly and allowing patrons to enter and exit as efficiently and safely as possible. At WeatherTech Raceway, this task belongs to the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps from Everett Alvarez High School and Soledad High School.

Between 15-20 cadets from the schools volunteer their time to make sure the parking lots remain in order. In return, WeatherTech Raceway makes a donation to the high schools, which are used to fund the NJROTC programs.

“I put a lot of emphasis on community service, so when we linked with Laguna Seca, we became regulars,” said Captain Pete Gomez, a retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran of 25 years who is the program manager for the Soledad NJROTC. “Every race at Laguna Seca, we are there providing support helping with parking, and sometimes concessions as well. We’re focused on keeping the students engaged in helping in the community and teaching them the value of unselfishness, because we want them to put others before themselves.”

The NJROTC program began in 1964 when the U.S. Government asked each branch of the armed forces to create a citizenship development program to help high school students. The students at Soledad and Everett Alvarez attend a naval science class as part of their high school education and go through a four-year program which prepares them for whatever may be next.

“This program is really beneficial to these kids in Soledad because we’re a Title One high school with a lot of low-income families,” Gomez said. “We show them what options they have besides college, like trade or vocational schools, or what the armed services can provide for them.

“We try to change their mindset, and by the time the students are in the program for three or four years, they already have in their minds what they want to do for their careers.”

New York Giants

In Super Bowl XLVI, Eli Manning won his second
Super Bowl ring by defeating the heavily
favored New England Patriots.

It was the fourth Super Bowl win in Giants franchise history. The Giants set a new record for the lowest regular season record (9–7, win percentage of 56.3%) by
a Super Bowl champion.

The Patriots entered the game with a 13–3 regular season record and were also seeking their fourth Super Bowl win.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
