World's Greatest Athlete
This past Friday President Biden presented the family of Jim Thorpe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in his honor. Thorpe was named the greatest athlete of the first 50 years of the 20th century by The Associated Press in 1950, and third greatest of the entire century in 1999, behind only Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan. The IOC recently officially reinstated Jim Thorpe as the sole winner of the gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom comes more than a century after Jim Thorpe set Olympic Records. His granddaughter, Lynn Hannon says Thorpe is the only man to have won both the pentathlon and decathlon and was the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States.
She says her grandfather would be extremely proud to receive this prestigious award. "He was a very shy person, believe it or not," Hannon said. "And he would be honored beyond belief, but he wouldn’t say anything other than 'Thank You.'" The medal will be displayed in the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
President Biden honors legendary Jim Thorpe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom:

The Night
Hart Made
49er History
by Dave Newhouse

When great moments in San Francisco 49ers history are written about, you won’t hear the name Tommy Hart. That’s a shame because Hart had one of the greatest defensive games in National Football League history.
Or, perhaps, even the greatest defensive game by anyone. Would six sacks and three forced fumbles qualify?
That’s not one team’s statistics; it’s one man racking up those unbelievable numbers in a single contest, Oct. 11, 1976, a Monday night game in Los Angeles, when the 49ers silenced the Rams, 16-0.
No 49er since the franchise’s debut in 1946 has come close to such single-game dominance. And there hasn’t been another defensive end pair in San Francisco in all that time to compare with Hart and Cedrick Hardman, who both contributed to the 10-sack game by the 49ers, a team record, that same evening against overwhelmed Rams quarterback James Harris.
“I’ve never seen a defensive line dominate a Los Angeles line since I’ve been here, but the 49ers did tonight,” said the Rams’ Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle Merlin Olsen, then in his 15th season.
“It was the greatest game I’ve ever had,” Hart said in his typical understated manner following the shutout victory.
But think about it, six sacks and three forced fumbles by one man in one game. Did Deacon Jones, Gino Marchetti, Lawrence Taylor and Bruce Smith ever come close to such numbers? Hardly. They’re all Hall of Famers, which Hart isn’t, but he dominated like no defensive player ever had before or after his time as a 49er.
Hart isn’t as heralded as other defensive ends, because he wasn’t ever an all-pro selection, and he played in only one Pro Bowl. He was a 10th-round draft pick in 1968 out of Morris Brown College, a teammate of George Atkinson, the future Oakland Raider safety. Hart then weighed 205 pounds, and projected as a linebacker, but covering passes wasn’t his forte. With a set of broad shoulders, he bulked up to 245 pounds on a 6-foot-4 frame, perfect for a speedy pass rusher.
“His tenacity and perseverance were amazing,” said fullback Larry Schreiber, Hart’s teammate. “He gave you everything he had, and he had a lot to give. He and (fellow defensive end) Cedrick Hardman were a force to be reckoned with.”

Hart had 17 sacks in 1972 and 16 sacks in 1976, the same two years he received the Len Eshmont Award as the 49ers’ most inspirational player.
“Six sacks in one game,” said Schreiber, reflecting on Hart’s ’76 dominance against the Rams. “That’s like three triple-doubles in a row in basketball.”
“There are people I put on a pedestal,” said Skip Vanderbundt, a 49er outside linebacker who lined up behind Hart, “and Tommy is one of them. You turned the switch on and he went 100 miles per hour all the time. Tommy and Cedrick, teams didn’t know who to double team. You can’t find anybody better.”
The late Hardman was colorful and quotable. Hart was exactly the opposite, reserved and quiet.
“Tommy just did his job,” said Schreiber.
And he did it well enough that he stayed a 49er through 1977, spending his last three years with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. Though Hart wasn’t verbal, he was a thinker, thus becoming a 49er defensive coach from 1981-91, including three Super Bowl wins, before becoming a scout for both the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
Hart, 79, isn’t feeling well at the moment, thus wasn’t quoted currently for this column. So others spoke up for him.
“He was a great player,” said Schreiber.
None better in 1976, that’s for sure.

Elvis Presley and Benson Fong in Girls, Girls, Girls
For several years Sports Today photographer Rich Yee has delighted readers with his extraordinary sports autographs (over 100) and we have marveled at the dedication and resolve needed to build such a collection. Rich's galaxy seems endless -- lucky us -- and
below is how it all began.
"Not many people know how I got started collecting autographs. Benson Fong, my uncle, was an actor who made films with Humphrey Bogart, Betty Davis, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Elvis…
"When I was five years old, he took me to a hotel in Los Angeles and introduced me to Elvis. They both signed the photo above from the movie, Girls, Girls, Girls. That was my first autograph, and I’ve been collecting ever since. Uncle Benson passed away in 1987 and here
are some of the films Benson appeared in. Click HERE."

Balks are Bigger than I Thought
in Baseball
The stats kept on them are impressive. Here's a free factoid which could make a good trivia question for
a group of serious stat fanatics.
But first, there have been 21 MLB balk-off games, all in the regular season. This one is an oddity -- a ninth-inning balk-off without the batter in the batter's box.
My Question:
Which pitcher set the record number of balks
(five) in one game?

On Doing The Bad Thing For Which
I Criticize Other People
by Howard Pearlstein
I was ranting along about people who write the sort of mean-spirited petty nastiness that includes a lot of “Trade this one” and “Dump that one.” They remind me of the 1980s Tears for Fears song: Everybody Wants to Rule the World. They think their opinions are more important than those of the players and the coaches.
“Opinions,” as put forth by 20th Century Drill Instructors, are “like ______ (profane word for anal sphincters), i.e. everyone’s got one and they all stink.” Since the military draft ended in 1973, entire generations of Americans never endured the mixed blessings of involuntary servitude with a sergeant and a rifle.
Opinions, the last two years of ones that the Dubs get rid of Wiggins. Sure, he was great, major key to winning the championship, but now he stinks -- trade him. And include Kuminga in the trade to “get someone really good,” which would then rank among the most clueless sports trades of history. Think George W trading away
Sammy Sosa.
Not knowing anything about Fantasy Sports, I dissed the players as being those creepy writers: “…the Keyboard Kommissars still confuse the Fantasy Football names they write on paper with the men out on the field, the ones busting their asses every day to succeed in their lives’ dream, trading them like the old Topps Football cards as fodder for their petty gambling.”
And then Jon Greber, who reads my columns and asks critical questions in a courteous way, emailed this:
Nice article! And I don't disagree with the stupidity of wanting to just ship someone off for something new & shiny. But I THINK you might be confusing fantasy players with draft pundits, or fans in general?
I'm just having a hard time understanding what fantasy football players have to do with this at all, but maybe I'm not getting it?
It is true, though, as a fantasy player I do think about what Aiyuk might be like as the featured #1 on say, the Steelers, but.... as we all know, those kinds of translations don't always work. (As I said, a courteous fellow and, full disclosure, also my nephew.)
I realized I was acting like one of those mean-spirited guys I hate because one of them was a fantasy league player – infected by the hateful “all of them must be the same as this one” disease. But there‘s a cure: having/giving respect. Check the evening news – any situation -- how much could some respect do to fix it?
It’s too easy to fall into the trap of My Opinion, sitting alone with a laptop, not even putting my shoes on. (Another full disclosure.
Actually, I’m icing arthritic toes – three little piggies who didn’t go to market or stay home but recently decided to become one of those things us old guys complain about.)
I’m asking if any of us would say any of those things if we were face to face in an office or a locker room? Say them to people we know and respect? No. Or to people we watch do the things we like to imagine we could do? No.
Would you say it to Alex Loera, soccer superstar whose fifth BAY FC game ended with an injury that puts her out for a year? I think not, unless the injury kept her from running fast enough to introduce her foot to your opinion.
The good news? Have/give all the respect you want – we’re in no danger of there being too much of it going around.

Vol. 78: Why Is There So Much Focus On Settlement Discussions In House v. NCAA?

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
by Darren Heitner
Founder of HEITNERLEGAL
There is a pending antitrust class action lawsuit against the NCAA with the caption House v. NCAA, where the plaintiffs claim that the NCAA has illegally restricted how college athletes earn money through NIL arrangements and wrongfully prevented former athletes from commercially exploiting their fame.
It feels like over the past week, every journalist who covers college sports wanted to talk about a potential settlement in the case. And the purported leaks kept coming as a steady drip throughout.
Pete Thamel and Dan Murphy of ESPN wrote that there are "deep discussions" on such a settlement agreement, which "would likely lay out the framework for sharing revenue with athletes in a future NCAA business model." That was according to sources who were not revealed by name. Such sources remain anonymous as more details have been revealed.
Damages in the matter could be assessed at more than $4 billion, so it makes sense that both sides are incentivized to negotiate an early resolution in good faith. The NCAA and its member schools would want to hedge massive risk while the plaintiffs' lawyers would love the guarantee of a quick huge payday, assuming they are working on a contingency fee basis.
Sources told Thamel and Murphy that an agreement would likely contain some structure for a future revenue share platform, with a "top-end revenue share number." At first, I figured the NCAA and its member schools would be wary of introducing any cap if it wished to reduce the likelihood of additional litigation.
Well, just yesterday, Thamel introduced more information by citing "sources."
"The cost of the settlement for past damages is expected to be more than $2.7 billion, to be paid by the NCAA over the next decade," wrote Thamel. "This payment by the NCAA wouldn’t come in a vacuum. The power conferences would correspondingly commit to a revenue share structure for the same period that’s expected to be in the neighborhood of $20 million per school, per year, determined via a formula based on revenue. It’s a permissive structure, that schools can choose to take part in. The NCAA potentially agreeing to make what are essentially significant back payments in the case and the power conferences potentially agreeing to a revenue share structure going forward is, some consider a deal that could hatch relative peace on the landscape for the near future. There remain myriad details to work out and potential complications.

Oakland Earns A Point In San Antonio!
San Antonio controlled most of the early portions of the game but never truly threatened the goal of Oakland keeper Tim Syrel as the score remained scoreless through most of the first half.
The best chance of the first half fell to Oakland Roots and Trayvone Reid, whose curling effort in first half stoppage time was saved by San Antonio’s Pablo Sisniega, keeping the score at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
Oakland got on the board first in the 65th minute when Trayvone Reid’s cross found Miche-Naider Chéry, who opened the scoring to give Roots the 1-0 lead.
San Antonio struck back in the 73rd minute when Juan Agudelo finished a cross into the box to level the spring at 1-1.
The lead was then overtaken when San Antonio’s Kevon Lambert scored off another cross into the box to give the home side the advantage at 2-1.
Oakland fought back as defender Thomas Camier earned a penalty for Roots. Oakland forward Johnny Rodriguez stepped up to score, once again leveling the score at 2-2 in the 84th minute.
Both sides fought it out until the end, resulting in a draw as Oakland and San Antonio each picked up a point.

The History of St. Francis Yacht Club
Becoming St. Francis
There is a tide that flows through the Golden Gate. There is a tide in the affairs of men.
In 1927, San Francisco Bay sailors crossed both in a single tack.
