San Francisco 49ers Low Lights
It was unlikely the Niners would go undefeated, so the team can now retool after the loss in Cleveland, unshackled by the intensity of unrealistic expectations. This was a venue, and a defense, ideally suited to rain on the 49ers parade.
More intent on a desire to inflict injuries on McCaffery, the Browns nevertheless also made Brock Purdy's day highly uncomfortable, and his statistics showed it.
Stuff happens -- just ask the Eagles, whose own undefeated record was broken by ... the Jets! Is it astrological? Home field advantage? Terrible referees? A long trip, an early game, lousy weather and a legitimately tough defense? You traded in your Gould for Bitcoin?
"All of the Above" is likely the correct answer.
Below is a link to Sunday's loss. No longer undefeated, it's time for a new Win streak!

Warriors/49ers News, Stephen A. Style
While there is not much to report on the NBA, there is some good news for Warriors fans. Stephen A. Smith says the Chris Paul trade will not work for the W's. Based on his consistently incorrect prognostications, this should boost morale on the team. Said Stephen A. on a recent show:
“Chris Paul is not one that you need to push the pace. He’s 38 years of age. He turns 39 in May. Steph Curry turns 36, I believe, in March. Klay Thompson is gonna be 34… I got to tell you something right now: I am concerned… That brother don’t need to be running up and down the court. If you’re the Golden State Warriors you need to push the ball up the floor. You need to unleash that aerial assault that they could throw in your direction…we all know he’s been perpetually injured and we know the pace of play that the Golden State Warriors usually implement could serve as an impediment to the success they hope to have”
Last week Stephen finally ranked the 49ers as the #1 team in the NFL. Kaboom. His four picks to win the Final Four -- all flopped badly, and the beat goes on. Based on early pre-season action, CP has played well and shown a desire to be a mentor to the new Warriors players. So, thank you Stephen A. for your Warriors boost. And please remove the 49ers from your treasured "Top 5" ist. We were fine when you didn't know who Brock Purdy was.

City Hall Addresses A's Move
by Dave Newhouse
| |
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao was traveling last week when I phoned seeking an interview regarding the Oakland A’s planned move to Las Vegas, which could come to a vote of the Major League Baseball owners at their Nov. 14-16 meetings in Arlington, Texas.
A pinch-hitter was needed to replace the mayor for this column, and the right person stepped up to the plate -- the mayor’s Chief of Staff Leigh Hanson.
How can the mayor prevent the A’s from abandoning Oakland, their home since 1968?
At this point, our direct negotiations with the team are not active. Our points of engagement with them are limited. That said, we feel we have a significant opportunity given that the A’s do not have any place to play after the 2024 season.
Obviously, we are co-owners with them at the Coliseum. One point we’re very willing to have a conversation about is a lease extension at the Coliseum. We have not received any direct communication from them about that. We’re still pushing hard with MLB about three viable (ownership) groups around Oakland There is a lot of energy to keep the team in Oakland, and to show eight owners (who could prevent this three-quarters vote relocation) that the move to Vegas is not in America’s best interest.
| |
Leigh Hanson, Chief of Staff, City of Oakland
Why is it not in America’s best interest?
The current eight owners have a lot to gain by maintaining (an American League) team in Northern California. The rivalry with the Giants is well-documented and makes people a lot of money. The current A’s ownership hasn’t demonstrated a willingness to invest in the team or the facility. And our understanding is that they are not the most popular owners in the MLB club.”
You haven’t heard back from the A’s, so Is this deliberate?
I’ve speculated over the last two months in figuring out what (owner) John Fisher or (team president) Dave Kaval are trying to accomplish, and I have not found their approach to be strategic or successful.
How important is it for Oakland to win this battle, and is it winnable?
It’s absolutely critical. A major league identity is important to many cities, and the Oakland A’s in particular. It has a unique relationship to the city and its culture, a working-class city with a scrappy baseball team. The A’s have a storied history, particularly in the black community, with major leaguers coming from here and achieving all these incredible sports victories. The Oakland A’s brand is internationally recognized. Their loss would be tremendous…a travesty.
What happens to Oakland if it has no major sports teams?
It would be a tragedy. But Oakland is a truly diverse, vibrant city, with an interesting, creative culture. There’s nothing about Oakland that will prevent it from rising above this (potential sports abandonment).

World Series trophies from 1972, 1973 and 1974
Oakland wasn't made whole when the Raiders and Warriors left, but does the mayor feel the A’s would be replaced with a new franchise?
We’ll certainly try as hard as we can on that. I can’t see any reason why Oakland wouldn’t have an expansion opportunity, aside from the pettiness of people who don’t like how we talk about them in the press. When you compare us to other cities like Portland, Salt Lake City, Sacramento and Nashville, Oakland is the sixth largest media market in the country, in one of the most affluent areas in the world. If I were an owner, I would see Oakland as a golden opportunity. Absolutely.
Which stadium site seems more practical, the existing Oakland Coliseum or the Howard Terminal project?
I would say both are viable, depending on the financing capacity of the (A’s) ownership.
Does the mayor see the A’s outcome as important for her political future?
A win would be great, but I don’t necessarily think that a loss hurts. When we came into office, this deal was on life support. The previous administration (of Mayor Libby Schaaf) had been attempting to negotiate with the A’s for four, five years, and I don’t think anyone would honestly lay the blame at her feet. Fisher and (MLB Commissioner Rob) Manfred have shown their colors. In truth, they’re not as savvy business people as they would like to imagine. A different ownership group, with any development chops, would have been able to get this project across the finish line.
You earlier mentioned three ownership groups interested in buying the A’s. Can you elaborate?
They have expressed ongoing interest in the franchise. I believe they could do a better job than Fisher in managing and developing the team. We’re willing to work with anyone who can put together a decent financing plan. It’s necessary, though not impossible, but you can’t buy something that isn’t for sale. That, right now, is the challenge.
What about Oakland being treated unfairly by its three sports franchises? Does the mayor have an opinion?
To be treated fairly gets to the fundamental understanding of what is the relationship between a local government and a sports franchise, which should see itself as an ambassador of a community. But some people see owning a sports team as a Lamborghini or a hot air balloon. It’s a toy they play with, without the engagement of the community in which they live. They don’t believe in fairness, because they believe that team belongs to them and no one else.
What should the nation know about Oakland that it doesn’t already comprehend?
To me, Oakland is like one of the most American of American cities. I believe in how entrepreneurial and hard fighting this city is, with so much passion. Oakland believes in what is possible. It will continue to thrive, with or without MLB, but I don’t think America is a place where we idolize billionaires.

Five Giants prospects on the rise

Shortly after the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was asked what he’d take away from his club’s disappointing 2023 campaign.
If there was one silver lining to the Giants’ subpar 2023 season, it was the fact that they debuted 12 rookies, many of whom have the potential to develop into core players for the franchise.
Catcher Patrick Bailey, shortstop Marco Luciano and outfielder Luis Matos could become fixtures up the middle, and Kyle Harrison, Keaton Winn, Ryan Walker and Tristan Beck will be aiming to establish themselves as mainstays on the pitching staff.
“One of the real positives of the season was how many young players came up and I think are going to be part of this team and organization going forward,” president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said. “We had a really good group of rookies. We have more guys coming from the system who are going to help us in the next couple of years, and I think that’s why we have a chance to build the foundation of a sustainable contender.”
Here’s a look at where San Francisco’s farm system stands and which prospects appear poised to take similar steps forward in 2024:

Brock Purdy and the Stillness of Mind
by Howard Pearlstein
First of all, I want to acknowledge I was inspired by Oliver Connolly’s excellent article in The Guardian, USA titled: Would Brock Purdy be an MVP Candidate without the 49ers? It doesn’t matter. It inspired me to finish elaborating on what I first thought when I saw Purdy follow Nate Sudfeld in a preseason game in August of 2022: “Purdy has something that reminds me of Joe Montana -- a stillness in the pocket -- a stillness and awareness -- a still center in the midst of chaos, like the Hokusai wave.”
And that brings up the sensibility of such Asian disciplines as yoga, Zen Buddhism, Aikido. They all identify what is needed to learn as stillness of mind. “Calming down the monkey mind,” some of them call it, and – full disclosure -- Monkey Mind is one I know too well.
The process of learning unfamiliar concepts requires what is called “open-mindedness,” a sort of intelligent ignorance. It’s why children learn languages more quickly than adults, not as much mental junk to clear out. When it’s time to “clear the mind,’ the still place is where a person can do the actual learning -- focusing on specifics.
I compare it to scatter-vision, something I had to learn when catching hawks for a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service migration study. Sitting in a blind on Slacker Hill in Marin County, looking out across the plateau and the more experienced volunteer saying “There. A Red-tail.” And I’m saying: “Where?” Looking at the place I couldn’t see it.
Learning scatter-vision is relatively simple – look out across any vista, defocus your eyes, relax them so you’re not looking at anything in particular. And gradually see the way a predator sees, something out of place, motion that differs from the background.
The camouflage which hides creatures no longer works as disguise. It’s the way predators see, and hawks and eagles especially as they have two fovea in their eyes – one takes in the general view, the other focuses on a specific. Looking straight ahead, the wide view is in effect. But when they see motion, they look sideways, for detail. And their ability to see detail is 10X ours – not magnification but finer resolution.
By “predator” vision, I mean it as a positive -- seeking a target, whether as a hunter, a nature photographer, a fire-lookout, or a QB looking to find defenders out of place or moving in a way that will create a space by the time the football gets there.
Whether it’s a wolf standing still or a hawk stilling in the air, physical stillness allows greater awareness – that slogan of the 60s, “Be here now.” Dealing with wild animals, it works both ways -- same principle – if that hawk or eagle sees you move, the hours spent in the blind are wasted.
So here’s this kid, comes from Arizona, not widely recruited, spends four years as a quarterback in a Big 10 School, playing hard hitting teams – Clemson, Texas, Kansas, West Virginia, Oklahoma, smart enough to ask the essential question:
“What do I need to learn to stay alive out here and get the job done?” And the answer is the ability to see the entire field.
That’s one of the things coaches talk about a quarterback and with any skill player (as if there were any positions on the football field that didn’t require skill), the other is “being a quick learner.” Brock Purdy does both a lot earlier in his career than most -- and does it better.

I remember seeing former 49er cornerback/safety Ronnie Lott at various public events. He used to host an annual charity fan fest at Stanford University with Roger Craig, Chris Mullin and the Stanford Football team. I would attend every one of his events. He was always very friendly and accommodating when surrounded by fans. He made sure everyone got autographs, photos and got their questions answered. I brought this photo to one of his charity events and he signed it for me and added “Be the best!"

Cal Earns First Win Over USC Since 2014
Stellar Defense Powers Bears To Marquee Win
BERKELEY – California volleyball posted its biggest win of the season on Sunday afternoon, welcoming traditional powerhouse USC to Haas Pavilion and taking care of business against the Trojans (11-7, 5-3 Pac-12) with a 3-1 victory.
The Golden Bears (13-6, 2-6 Pac-12) snapped a 14-match losing streak against USC for their first win in the series since 2014 and the first in four-or-fewer sets since 2010.
Coming into the weekend, the Trojans ranked among the NCAA's top-50 teams in three offensive categories, including a 24th-ranked team hitting percentage of .270. Their powerful attack was no match for Cal's defense, however, which held the visitors to .228 thanks in no small part to seniors Tara DeSa and Sam Taumoepeau posting 22 and 12 digs, respectively.
Junior Annalea Maeder made a huge impact by recording stats in all five categories, matching her career high with six kills while also posting 35 assists, two service aces, nine digs and one block. Sophomore Mikayla Hayden was once again remarkably efficient with 10 kills on .500 hitting – her second straight performance with double-digit kills – while freshman Maggie Li paced the Bears with 17 kills and added seven digs. Helping to round out Cal's defensive effort was junior Ellie Hamm, who posted a career-high six digs and was responsible for two of Cal's blocks.

Largest Comeback in Program History
Stanford storms back from a 29-point deficit to knock off Colorado in double overtime, as Elic Ayomanor breaks the Cardinal single-game receiving record with 294 yards
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Joshua Karty connected on a 31-yard field goal in the second overtime after tying the game in regulation, Elic Ayomanor had a school-record 294 yards receiving and Stanford rallied from a 29-point halftime deficit for a 46-43 victory over Colorado early Saturday.
Safety Alaka'i Gilman picked off a floating Shedeur Sanders pass in the end zone to set the stage for Karty, who drilled a 46-yarder with no time left in regulation.
The Cardinal (2-4, 1-3 Pac-12) trailed 29-0 at halftime, with QBs Justin Lamson and Ashton Daniels unable to light a spark.
That is, until the second half when Daniels - with Lamson contributing - led Stanford on eight straight scoring drives. The Cardinal had 408 of their 523 yards in the second half and OT.
Daniels threw for 396 yards and four TDs. Ayomanor had 13 catches and three TDs, including one to tie up the first overtime and another for 97 yards that changed the game. His 294 yards receiving broke the record held by Troy Walters (278) against UCLA in 1999.

Offense Leads No. 14 Women's Soccer to Win
at Pacific
STOCKTON, Calif. – Another big performance from the offense lifted No. 14 Santa Clara women's soccer to a 5-1 win over Pacific on the road Saturday afternoon. After applying pressure early, the levee broke midway through the first half and continued throughout the 90 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mailin Orozco got the scoring going in the 26th when Addie Whitehouse rolled a pass to her that the goalkeeper dove for but missed and Orozco was able to tap it into the empty net.
Two minutes later Colby Barnett got in on the action by dribbling down the field and hitting a left-footed shot inside the right post from a couple yards inside the top of the box.
In what's becoming a common theme, Farrah Walters put her stamp on the game next. In the 56th, Whitehouse crossed a ball on the ground to Walters who took a touch and beat the keeper. In the 71st, Lia Henkelmann, playing her first game of the year due to injury, found Walters on a run and she held off a defender before finishing far post.

ABOUT ST. FRANCIS YACHT CLUB
From its home on the shores of San Francisco Bay, the St. Francis Yacht Club conducts one of the most active regatta schedules in the world, serving a leadership role in competitive sailing. Its 140+ race days per year invariably include regattas of national and international significance.
A strong seabreeze prevails from March to October on San Francisco Bay. Combined with a setting of great natural beauty, and environs rich in attractions, that reliable breeze makes the bay uniquely attractive for competition under sail.
Much like the city of San Francisco—a young city with a rich history—St. Francis is a young club with a rich history. Founded in 1927, the club was only three years old when the schooner Zaca carried its burgee around the world, and only nine years old when the yawl Dorade, flying StFYC colors, became the first boat to sweep a Transpac. The original clubhouse was destroyed in stages by a 1976 fire and a 1989 earthquake, but through the years, the Club has anchored the international game of yachting on San Francisco Bay.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and
