San Francisco 49ers vs.
Dallas Cowboys:
NFC Divisional Round
January 22, 2023, Levi's Stadium
49ers 19, Dallas 12
In a defensive battle, San Francisco's superiority was evident, although there were plenty of tense moments packed into the game. The first Quarter ended 3-0, 49ers, keyed by a Deommodore Lenoir interception and a nifty pass to Brandon Aiyuk, capped by a Robbie Gould FG at 2:16.
A late 49er field goal after a catch by Mr. Clutch (Jouan Jennings), and a block by Samson Ebukam of an extra point attempt by Bill (sic) Brett Maher combined for an unusual 9-6 half-time score, 49ers. Purdy faced pressure all game long, but maintained his cool (no surprise there) and had no interceptions.
After a rare misplay by Ray Ray McCloud III on a kickoff, Dallas kicked a FG to make it 9-9 to end the 3rd Q. Ray Ray would claim redemption with a 53-yard kickoff return. George Kittle and Brock Purdy connected on a remarkable play (in the 3rd Q. video, link below, at 5:08) which would lead to a 49er touchdown.
A Dallas field goal would make it 19-12 in the 4th quarter, but Ebukam sacked Dak Prescott, and Elijah Mitchell and Christian McCaffery effectively ran the ball until the 49ers finally had to punt with about one minute left. The Niner Defense stood strong, and the Cowboys were sent packin' with deflated egos tucked away in their luggage.

Sports Haiku
Haiku: A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Sports Today! has expanded Haikus to embrace our readership and invites you to submit your own. Top entries will be published!
Thank you for your many entries!
This week's selection process focuses on the topic du jour, the 49er-Cowboys playoff game.
This VICTORIOUS ENTRY most accurately and viscerally channels the emotions of 49er fans and those of many other teams to reflect their resentment that "America" is equated in any way with the vile City or State in which the Cowboys are located. Such association MUST be stricken from the sports lexicon, with sanctions imposed on announcers
who dare to utter it.
No punches pulled; this Haiku is about Good over Evil.

AZ Cardinals Almost Clean House
Greeting from the Southwest!
On January 9th, Cardinals’ owner Bidwill fired Coach Kliff Kingsbury and accepted GM Steve Keim’s resignation. Unfortunately, QB Kyler Murray wasn’t on the cut list even though he wasn’t a unifying spirit during the 2022 season. Guess being in on IR with a blown ACL carried more weight. Interestingly though, Kingsbury is pouting in SE Asia after buying a one-way ticket to Thailand. It’ll be interesting to see how he can establish another losing record in some other endeavor.

49ers on Their Way to NFC Title Game
by Bruce Macgowan
| |
Are they Superbowl bound? 49er fans are feeling pretty frisky these days after that gritty win over the Cowboys, but the Niners are going to have crank up offense against the Eagles to move on to their second Super Bowl in four seasons. They didn’t do much of that against the Cowboys.
The good news is that rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has passed two tests by winning a pair of playoff games. Purdy was under siege during the first half and much of the second half in the 19-12 win over Dallas, but he didn’t throw an interception and didn't lose his cool. Purdy also did a nice job milking the clock in the waning minutes by handing off to Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell who came up with the clutch yards. A long eight-minute drive near the end of the game essentially clinched the win.
McCaffrey has been a transformative player for this year’s Niner addition. Since he arrived in a stunning trade from the Carolina Panthers, he’s given an already potent offense a jolt, complementing the likes of big play performers like tight end George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. And it was fitting that McCaffrey scored SF’s lone TD in the second half. The line opened a big hole in the Dallas defense and McCaffrey sprinted through it. The Niners never trailed from that point on.
The old football cliche, “you win games with your defense” is certainly applicable to this year’s 49ers. Despite the fact that they didn’t consistently pressure Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott much of the game, they picked off two of his passes and allowed just one touchdown. Will they be able to put the clamps on another scrambling quarterback, Jalen Hurts this Sunday in Philadelphia? Good question.

Stanford Continuing Studies
Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119
Title: Make Sense of the Madness:
The Evolving Business of College Athletics
Instructor -- Andy Dolich
The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and
in the future?
This course examines the business of college sports past,
present and future.
Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports
Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson
Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher
Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner
Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun
Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved
constituencies.
Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.
Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

Fujinami Welcome a Big Day for Athletics

OAKLAND -- It takes a lot for the Athletics to put together a press conference for a free-agent signing, given that the last one had taken place more than a decade ago. That’s what made Tuesday morning so significant.
Rather than just organizing a simple Zoom call, the A’s invited members of the media to their team headquarters on the waterfront shores of Downtown Oakland at Jack London Square to introduce Japanese right-hander Shintaro Fujinami, whom they signed to a one-year contract last week. It marked the first news conference held by the A’s to introduce a free agent since 2012, when they signed Japanese infielder Hiroyuki Nakajima.

|
Cuban Pitcher,
a No. 5 International Prospect, selected by the A’s
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
Since 1968, their first year in Oakland, the Oakland A’s had many Latin American players, like Dabogerto Blanco (Campy) Campaneris, José Canseco, Miguel Tejada, Tony Armas and many others. Today, between 30-33 % of all players in the major leagues are born in Latin America.
The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with 17 international prospects, all from Latin America. Among the 17, the No. 5 prospect is MLB right-handed pitcher Luis Dany Morales out of Cuba. Morales pitched for Sancti Spiritus in Cuba’s Serie Nacional in 2021 and was 3-3 with a 5.95 ERA in 11 games and nine starts.
He struck out 58 in 42.1 innings and walked 30 while surrendering just two home runs as an 18-year-old. Major League teams traveled to watch Morales pitch in Mexico City earlier this year. He has a fastball that can reach the high 90s and a breaking ball that “projects to be above average” according to scouts.
In 2021 Morales was arrested by Cuban authorities, along with his parents for trying to escape Cuba. But in the end, the 18-year-old Morales succeeded and was the one that lead a bunch of other Cuban players defecting from Cuba as they were playing in México.
Others were Yeiniel Zayas, Ubert Mejias, infielder Miguel Antonio González, catcher Loidel Rodríguez and outfielders Reynaldo Lazaga and Diasmany Palacios, pitcher Brayan Chi, and outfielders Loidel Chapelli and Yandy Yanes. Among all these Cubanos, only Morales was signed by the A’s.
After Morales and these Cuban players defected, the Cuban Baseball Federation released an official statement blaming the last two U.S. presidents, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, for the defections. This is normal for the communist country and that is how their propaganda machine operates. When in doubt, blame the U.S.

All the Ooo-eeooo scaries about playing Dallas and/or…
by Howard Pearlstein
Those gossipy columns going: “Watch out for Dallas!”
Hey – it’s the playoffs! Other than 8-9 Tampa Bay, they’re all top teams in the NFL.
It’s the PLAYOFFS – anyone with a brain will ASSUME opponents will be tough.
I got this brief email from my friend Charlie, long time San Franciscan now living in a village near Brno, Czech Republic, meaning he has to stay up until 5 or even 5:30 A.M. to watch Niners’ late games. (We’d been exchanging our thoughts on Niners’ Defense and the Dallas Game.) His conclusion: "Any team that’s gonna play us is gonna find themselves battered and pummeled between the Brock and a Hard Place.?"
I watched Dallas play and yeah their QB Prescott is something else, something like…like you’d expect the Quarterback of a playoff team to be.
As is young Mr. Purdy. And he’s enough of that I can imagine the Baby-Face Assassin of the Gridiron getting his name turned into some sort of verb…one that combines cool-headed pinpoint accuracy with the trap of underestimating the talent and the study and the nearly vertical learning curve of The Kid.
“Brock those SOB’s and make ‘em show some respect!”
“He’s Brocking those bastards!"
And they (the yapping ankle-biters) are already doing their low-rent Nostrodamnings with things like: “Yeah, well how good will he be next season when he loses some of those players around him?”
(Meaning O-Line and WRs and Tight Ends and Running backs.)
They assume any players of a successful team would go to another for more money, rather than be part of creating a new dynasty.
Once and for all – my take on the reason so many players left the team after losing the Kaepernick Super Bowl was because Jim Harbaugh had destroyed the team for his own Sibling Rivalry and College-coach limit of “only got 3-4 years” with a star player. He tanked Alex Smith’s career (by not returning his starting role after injury, breaking the compact), and deprived Colin of another year learning the finer points that could have taken him up to the next level.
If they had won, many of those same players might have left anyway, because Harbaugh was staying, and cashing in on The Ring was more attractive than his disrespectful crap.
We can anticipate and predict what will happen until Hell won’t have it, but the only thing that’s real is the actual game. And the result is what shows the relative strength of the connective fibers of the team holding it together as a single organism composed of individuals, all different but all connected. What some call “family.”
We have a defense that plays like a pack of wolves – a bunch of 120 pound wolves going after a 1500-pound moose – doesn’t matter who gets the first bite (sack, interception) as long as that moose gets taken down to feed the pack. Double-team Nick Bosa and guess what happens. My guess — Dallas’ D is only a 700-pound moose.
Same with the Offense – double-team Deebo, there’s McCaffery. Double-team McCaffery, there’s Deebo and Aiyuk, and, of course, Kittle (“I ALWAYS get open.”) Go after all of them, there’s Elijah and Mason and Juszczyk.
I think we’re amazingly fortunate to have TWO professional sports teams here -- Warriors and 49ers – both of which have created that same sort of dynamic. Barring injuries, it works.
Doesn’t mean they’ll win them all, just means they’ll go in full tilt every time for each other and the team.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Sugar Ray Leonard -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
The annual dental convention in Anaheim that I’ve been going to has been a great place to get athlete autographs. There’s a vendor there that hires athletes to sign autographs for customers who purchase their products. One year they had former boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard. After making the required purchase, the vendor handed me a boxing glove and I stood in line to meet Sugar Ray Leonard. He was sharply dressed in a suit and looked exceptionally well for a boxer. We chat for a second, shook hands and he signed my boxing glove with a smiley face.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
