Letters to the Editor

Note: If this edition of Sports Today appears shorter, it is because your editors have skipped town for an overdue journey to Jack London country and to again befriend Sergeant Preston and his dog, King. That's right, we're Sitka-bound and hope to arrive before the bountiful Alaskan seas are fished out. Photographic evidence of any success might appear next issue!

Start The Season!
This Buffalo Bills fanatic just sat through an entire preseason game against the Detroit Lions where the 3rd and 4th stringers were battling it out. I guess that means I'm desperate for the season to get started!

Don't sleep on my Bills at +1100 to win it all.

Team, um, I mean Corporate Uniforms
Many teams in almost all sports have adopted the European-style corporate name affiliation. The modest-sized logos or company names on NBA uniforms started a trend which has mushroomed of late. Thanks to the remarkable photographers of the Ultimate Sports Guide I have been able to study the uniforms of the Earthquakes and Roots teams.

From what I can tell, the team's own names are not on the uniforms! Just their sponsors, with player names on the back. That's just a poor way to brand the team identity, especially on the road and when games are televised. How about it, Earthquakes, Roots, (if those are really your names), upgrade the uniforms.

Deserving of NL Manger of the Year Consideration

By Bruce Macgowan
After four and a half stunning months of mostly winning baseball,
the Giants appear poised and ready for the challenge to come in the weeks ahead. And right now they have shown no letdown thanks in large part to their second-year skipper.

There have been many people who have contributed to the Giants’ success. but the man who has been the driving force behind this surprising San Francisco club is manager Gabe Kapler.

A former big league journeyman, Kapler was fortunate to find some prominent jobs in the game when his playing days ended. Giants’ team president Farhan Zaidi became an admirer of Kapler’s people skills and awareness of how to handle athletes when the two men were working with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But after a mostly forgettable two-year stint as a rookie manager in Philadelphia, teams weren’t exactly knocking down his door with offers.

However, Zaidi felt comfortable naming a new manager he felt could lead San Francisco into a new era. Local fans and media, however, were extremely skeptical. After all, how was Kapler going to pick up the slack with a mediocre cast while filling the shoes of future Hall of Fame skipper Bruce Bochy?

But last year’s Covid-shortened season appears to have been a fair sample size of what Kapler had to work with and what he is capable of doing. And the Giants surprised many by contending to the last day of the 2020 season before their hopes of making it to the playoffs vanished.

Now in 2021, it’s really come together. Kapler was able to depend on a terrific starting rotation all the way up to the All-Star break and while the bullpen was sketchy in the first half, it now seems to be one of the Giants’ strengths.

But depth is what has made the difference and Kapler has been masterful maneuvering his lineups to maximize the talents of his regulars and backups.

The Giants faced a challenging stretch of games not that long ago, when the entire starting infield was on the DL. So it became clear that backups such as Wilmer Flores, Donovan Solano, Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade Jr., among others, would have to fill the bill. And those guys did more than that.
NL Manager of the Year candidate and skipper of the
San Francisco Giants, Gabe Kapler

Stirring wins over Los Angeles, Arizona, Rockies and more recently the Mets have proven this team means business. In a win this past Sunday over Colorado, Kapler used three pinch hitters in a row; Kris Bryant, Austin Slater and Darin Ruf. All three of them reached base as the Giants scored two runs to stretch a tentative one run lead to three in the seventh inning of yet another dramatic win.

Kapler loves to mix and match his outfield, but he’s trying to get Wade Jr. on the diamond every day because this youngster, who started his big league career in Minnesota, has delivered several clutch hits while making a number of outstanding defensive plays in the outfield.

Finally, Kapler has that rare gift that former San Francisco skippers Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy had; the ability to have an open and honest dialogue with any player at any time behind closed doors. Subsequently, he’s helped create a confident, winning atmosphere in the clubhouse.

If the Giants were playing in New York, Boston or Philadelphia, they’d be getting lots of national recognition. What Gabe Kapler and this club have done has bordered on the miraculous. Let’s see what happens in September.

International Traditional Sports
Day Conference
Conference attendees appeared virtually

The International Traditional Sports Day Conference is one of the most important events of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG). It was held on August 14 and 15, virtually, and was attended by more than 450 participants from 85 countries, including sports ministers, government officials, representatives of UNESCO, the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS), Permanent Delegations, ILO, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), researchers, international organizations, and indigenous groups from around the world.

The Conference declared August 14 as International Tradition Sports Day. In this regard, events held in every country under the umbrella of the Council to highlight and promote their local traditional sports and games and historical culture were portrayed globally and virtually through the platform of ICTSG.

The ICTSG is the official umbrella organization for all traditional sports and indigenous games, as well as organizers of traditional sports games and sport-related international associations. It also facilitates the understanding of TSG in terms of cultural identity and diversity. It gives exposure to opportunities that mainstream sports can’t provide.

On August 14, 2017, the 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games was held by UNESCO in Istanbul, Turkey. During that meeting, the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games was established to revive and safeguard traditional sports and games. Part of ICTSG's mission is to contribute to the promotion and development of TSG, as a distinct and different category to modern sports and to encourage and support activities blending traditional and indigenous sport with culture and education.

The TSG Conference was divided into four sessions: The General Conference on Traditional Sports was held, virtually, in four sessions.
I) Ministerial Session; II) Ambassadors/NATCOM Session; III) Gender Equality and Women empowerment through TSG; IV) Revival & Development of TSG at the national level.

The Ultimate Sports Guide is pleased to draw attention to this unique and important Sports Conference.

Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera has been one of the most vocal leaders within the NFL about encouraging its players to get
the COVID-19 vaccine
Of Vaccines and Victory
by Pete Elman

Recently two high profile NFL quarterbacks were asked if they had received vaccines. Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, one of the young stars of the game, deflected the question, saying, “It’s a personal decision—I’m going to keep my feelings to myself.” And veteran Cam Newton said this, “It’s too personal to discuss.” These observations were made by New York Times journalist Jamelle Bouie, whose recent piece is entitled “If You Skip the Vaccine, It Is My Damn Business.”

His premise, that we are still living “in the shadow of the Reagan revolution,” namely, that personal self-interest has pushed aside any semblance of social solidarity we may have had, and the result is that you have football players believing they know better than doctors and scientists who have devoted their adult lives to the study of vaccines and their efficacy.

We are witnessing the tragic consequences in real time, as surging Covid cases in the South have crippled states’ hospital systems to the point where they are forced to seek federal help, something I hope is shaming Southern governors whose fealty to the 2021 version of the “lost cause” has cost thousands of lives and disrupted our nation’s attempts to put this nightmare behind us.

And the NFL is not helping. Just as the NBA a year ago decided that the only way to complete the season was to institute a no-fans allowed “bubble” in Florida—which for the most part worked—the NFL should have issued vaccination mandates long ago, for all players and staff.

They didn’t, not surprisingly. So, here is their new rule: If an unvaccinated player causes a Covid outbreak among unvaccinated players, the team with the outbreak will forfeit and be credited with a loss. I have an idea—why not make sure everyone is vaccinated? Oh, I forgot; personal freedom. Give me a break.

Every day we are seeing organizations, from the Federal government, the military, and the largest corporations issue vaccination mandates, among them: Amtrak, Cisco, Delta Air Lines, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, The New York Times, Twitter, Uber, United Airlines, and CBS.

Meanwhile, courageous school districts across the country, in defiance of anti-science and politically motivated anti-mask mandate rulings, are insisting that their students be safe. Surely the NFL with its billions can figure this out. What are they afraid of? Another pathetic unhinged rant from the ex-president? Misinformed fans for their stance on masks and vaccines? Their sponsors? Doubtful, when they are requiring vaccines for their employees.

Bouie goes on to say, “Our institutes have made vaccination a choice when it should have been mandated from the start…if we want a country that takes solidarity seriously, we will have to build one.”

A good place to start would be the most popular sport in the country, one that is watched by tens of millions every week. What a great example that would be, if the NFL could actually, for once in their greedy history, take their eye off of the bottom line and re-adjust their vision up to their heart, that is, if they have one.

New York Giants outfielder Casey Stengel

That's 100 years ago and I'm a Red Sox fan and had no idea!
I didn't even know Casey Stengel played for the Giants and never bothered to even learn his real name.

Although Stengel was on the 25-player postseason roster, he did not appear in the 1921 World Series against the Yankees as manager John McGraw used only 13 players (4 of them pitchers) in beating the Yankees, five games to three.

The only contribution Stengel made to the box score was being ejected from Game 5 for arguing. To learn Casey's real name and for a brief Wikipedia history of this renowned baseball legend, go to https://bit.ly/3g77YW3

Navigating a career in any business is highly complex, especially in the world of sports and entertainment. Knowing how to separate the logo on your business card from your personal identity is a valuable skill for creating your own career path. Cool corporate logos and titles should never control your true sense of self; your name on the card is much more important! Welcome to the world of LOL, or “Loss of Logo.”
Written for aspiring sports professionals, current sports industry professionals, and any career enthusiasts who are chasing the fancy logo and corner office, LOL, Loss of Logo: What’s Your Next Move? offers valuable takeaways for everyone. Comprised of powerful perspectives from 38 multitalented industry professionals, this book will give you the tools to succeed in the industry, with or without your logo.
The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
