49ers Noteworthy Candidates
In the two pre-season games, several new names have surfaced and demonstrated some excellent skills. (Some players had been with the team but had only limited action due to injuries, such as Javon Kinlaw, #99, who appears to be as previously advertised).

Both understudy QBs played quite well -- Nate Sudfeld, and Brock Purdy, WR Danny Gray (no surprise), G Aaron Banks, DE Drake Jackson, (we know -- long arms -- thanks for the info., Tim Ryan), CB Samuel Womack III (a Toledo Rocket alum), DE Alex Barrett, RB Jordan Mason, RB and SS George Odum.

The broadcast duo of Tim Ryan and Greg Papa kept player info. and game action in synch with the game, replete with some nifty biographical stories on each player.

It's too early to tell, but with a stout 49ers D-FENCE, I'll go with "guardedly optimistic."

Giants First Round Draft Choice
I don't care about any ridiculously old-fashioned antediluvian rules, or old injuries related to him as a pitcher -- I saw Reggie Crawford in the batting cages last week and he needs to be in the Giants' lineup immediately as a DH. That swing is a work of fine art, and he hit some
major shots in practice. Time's a wastin'!

Looking Forward to the NFL Season

by Bruce Macgowan

Could the 2022 NFL season see a return to the top for the 49ers?

There has been much hoopla about quarterback Trey Lance and it sometimes seems a bit over the top. There are high expectations that some feel are unrealistic, but Lance might turn out to be the best 49ers’ quarterback since Steve Young ran the show in the 1990s.

Lance seems to have all of the ‘right stuff.’ He’s extremely bright, mature, likable and from everything we hear, a great teammate who has impressed his new buddies with his work ethic. But expecting Trey Lance to become another Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson, or even a Kyler Murray is a bit premature. We need to see at least half a season of games before judging him. But everyone knows the young man can throw, he can run, and he has that prerequisite ability to improvise.

Lance has a great group of receivers and running backs to work with. Emerging superstar Deebo Samuel is one of those guys who only comes along once every 10 to 20 years. Can anyone remember who was as good a pass catcher and runner in the 49ers’ long history, with the possible exception of Roger Craig? George Kittle, who likes to run over people after catching a pass, may not be as healthy as he could be, but when he’s playing, Kittle is still one of the premier tight ends in the game. Young wideout Brandon Aiyuk emerged as a great complement to Samuel last year after coach Kyle Shanahan sat down with him and had a serious discussion about his work habits and attitude. And running back Elijah Mitchell more than softened the blow of the loss of Raheem Mostert. Mitchell was one of those runners who relishes contact while he piled up the yardage. To use the words of an NFL coach, “Mitchell runs downhill.” The key with him is staying healthy and that won’t be easy considering his bruising style and the number of carries he gets a game. Mitchell is one of the top workhorses in the NFL.

Meanwhile there’s very little concern about the defense. The line is anchored by superstar Nick Bosa and emerging star Arik Armsted. These guys know to get to the quarterback and make his life miserable. Young standout veteran Fred Warner is one of the best linebackers in the game. He seems to get his nose into just about every play. The secondary has been strengthened by the signing of veteran star Charvarius Ward, but the last few years this group has been weakened by injuries.

The biggest worry is the Niners’ offensive line. The retirement of former Cal star Alex Mack leaves a gaping hole and as we write these words, it’s not certain who the new man in the middle will be. Could it be the veteran Justin Skule or the youngster Colton McKivitz? Both are major question marks. Left tackle Erik Williams may still be among the top three at his position in the game, a modern day Art Shell but he’s in his mid-30s, past his prime and more injury prone. Last season Williams heroically played through a severely sprained ankle in the playoffs and acquitted himself very nicely. But virtually everyone eventually breaks down in this vicious game. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey is also coming off an injury riddled season so there are major concerns about his durability. And the Niners not only lost Mack, but stalwart Laken Tomlinson, the unappreciated guard who played in practically every Niners’ game the last several years. Tomlinson was a free agent and moved on.

So there are concerns about the offensive line and to a lesser degree, the defensive backfield. But overall, the 2022 49ers have the look of a Super Bowl contender.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan still seems young but he’s a veteran who is very creative and innovative. He still looks as if he’s in his early 30s, but don’t underestimate him. Shanahan also had a huge advantage of watching and working with his dad, Mike, when he was a youngster, and he learned his lessons well. He is arguably one of the great coaches in the NFL. Shanahan also seems to have a penchant of finding terrific assistants. After defensive coordinator Robert Saleh left to take the head coaching position with the Jets, linebackers’ coach DeMeco Ryans filled that spot very nicely in 2021.

Yao Ming -- From the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
While I was an employee for Visa, USA in the Marketing Dept., I had the good fortune of meeting a lot of celebrities that endorsed Visa and athletes that were sponsored by the company. One of the athletes that filmed a commercial for Visa was basketball Hall of Fame member
Yao Ming and I had a chance to meet him.

The week he filmed the Visa commercial (with baseball legend Yogi Berra) he stopped by our office to meet with our executives. After the meeting Yao took the time to chat with the Marketing team and signed photos for us. At 7’6” he stood a full two feet taller than me. The photo shows Yao in a New York souvenir shop trying to buy a Statue of Liberty figurine with a check. It’s a funny commercial and you can still
see it on YouTube.

Cal Bears
Ochoa Wins NCGA Women's
Amateur Championship
Rising Junior Takes Inaugural Match Play Event

PEBBLE BEACH – Cal rising junior Cristina Ochoa won the inaugural NCGA Women's Amateur Match Play championship Friday at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Ochoa defeated three-time All-Mountain West performer Antonia Malate of San Jose State in the match play final.

"I feel like my game is heading in the right direction," Ochoa said. "I wanted to get something going right before the college season, and I also really enjoy match play. It's a good confidence boost for me."

Ochoa defeated Malate 3 and 2 after beating Cal teammate Kristine Tran 4 and 3 in the semifinals.

"Cristina was just really consistent all week," Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "She hit a good amount of fairways and was swinging with good tempo. It was a good week of golf for her."

Friday's win culminated a strong summer for Ochoa, who finished second at the NCGA Women's Amateur Stroke Play Championship in June to new Cal teammate Kaylyn Noh, a transfer from Cal Poly.

"This really solidifies what Cristina has been working on," McDaniel said. "There can only be one winner, so to get this one, she should savor it – especially on a course like this and in match play. There were some really good players out here, so she can add this to her toolbox."

After Tran lost to Ochoa on Thursday, she turned around and caddied for her teammate on Friday. Former Cal star Katherine Zhu also caddied for Ochoa earlier in the week and watched her final round Friday.

"We had a lot of fun," Ochoa said. "Kristine and I both played well Thursday, and it was fun because we know each other so well. We knew we'd have to play well to be able to beat each other."

The Bears open the 2022-23 season Sept. 12-13 at the Olympic Club Invitational in San Francisco.

Saint Mary's College Gaels
Bockler Takes Home First Student-Athlete
of the Week Award

MORAGA, Calif. — With sports back in action last week, Saint Mary's has awarded its first Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week award of the school year. Taking a starring role while the Gaels were in Australia, junior guard Leemet Bockler of the Men's Basketball team is the first winner of the 2022-23 season.

Bockler played an instrumental role in the Gaels going 6-0 for the first time during a foreign tour. Bockler drew the starting assignment in two of the six games, and was one of the team's leading scorers, putting up a total of 80 points, or 13.3 points per game. He scored at least 10 points in four games, and broke out for a 26-point performance against Sydney United Basketball on game two of the trip.

Bockler was hampered by injuries last season and appeared in just 12 games, playing a total of 48 minutes and scoring 23 points. He was beginning to breakout as a freshman during the 2020-21 season before a foot injury derailed the remainder of the year. A healthy Bockler proved he can be a dangerous shooter for the Gaels moving forward, as proven by his 13 made three-pointers down under.

The Gaels returned home from their trip abroad early on Monday morning and will have a few weeks off before practice returns at the onset of the semester. The Gaels will prepare to open their season at home against Oral Roberts on November 7. SMC begins the 2022-23 year with five-consecutive home games, including three against teams that have made the NCAA Tournament in either of the last two years. Tickets can be purchased by clicking HERE.

Late Goal Lifts No. 22 Men’s Soccer Over Cal Poly in Exhibition Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Oladayo Thomas scored in the 86th minute to break a scoreless deadlock to lift No. 22 Santa Clara men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Cal Poly in the exhibition finale on Saturday night.

Thomas, a preseason All-West Coast Conference selection, scored from 10 yards out when he one-timed a feed from Bar Hazut past Cal Poly goalkeeper Gabe Penner. On the play, Hazut walled off a Mustang defender on a throw in, made a nifty move to get past a second defender before delivering the pass from the right side to Thomas.

Santa Clara had a 7-5 advantage in shots including two by Thomas that were both on frame. No other shots found the target. The corner kicks were even at three each.

The Concorso Italiano is recognized as the world’s largest luxury and exotic Italian Car Show. In addition to the cars, it’s a celebration of fashion, food, wine, art, music and good friends. Up to 1,000 Italian luxury and exotic cars are on display, ranging from vintage sports cars to modern multi-million dollar collectables.

This year’s Best In Show award went to a beautiful green 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 Strada. Making his first entry appearance at Concorso Italiano this year was Sports Today photographer Rich Yee

Sonoma Raceway
Brandy Falconer Named New Director of Communications at Sonoma Raceway

SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 17, 2022) – Sonoma Raceway has named veteran motorsports publicist and enthusiast Brandy Falconer as its new director of communications. Falconer recently served as communications manager at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and worked in brand management in the wine industry. She brings decades of personal and professional motorsports experience to the team.

A California native, Falconer grew up in Carmel Valley after her father moved his racing engine business from Los Angeles closer to Laguna Seca. She considers Sonoma Raceway her “second home track” with a lifetime of history and memories here as well.

As a member of the communications team, Falconer will help drive Sonoma Re-imagined efforts and strengthen community relations in addition to ongoing public relations initiatives. She will also lend her expertise in the strategy and presentation of premium and ancillary events at the raceway.

”We’re excited to bring in someone with a diverse background who is also well acquainted with various facets of motorsports” said Jill Gregory, executive vice president and general manager of Sonoma Raceway. “Brandy brings strong communications skills from brand management and sales experience which fits right in with our goals of putting Sonoma Raceway at the forefront of the minds of those in our community and throughout the region.”

While at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Falconer refined and managed the look and voice of the digital media platforms and outlets, expanded and refocused the communications team and successfully led improvements to media center operations to meet the needs of IndyCar upon its return to the track.

Falconer’s professional motorsports experience encompasses marketing and business development for motorsports companies, corporate sales and management at racing schools and race car driving experiences as well as team experience with Ferrari Challenge. Her lifestyle communications experience stems from years in brand management in the wine industry in both North America and Europe.

“I look forward to building on the nostalgic relationship that many have with the track and blending that with a strong, inclusive presence in the surrounding community via social, professional and charitable activities” said Falconer of her new role.

Falconer earned a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from University of California, San Diego. She is currently transitioning from her home in Carmel Valley to the Sonoma area.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
