This is What We Get:
So far we only know who we will beat.
The wait is over, Faithful! The San Francisco 49ers will host the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round next weekend on Saturday at 5 p.m. The seventh-seeded Packers' 48-32 upset of the No. 2 seed Dallas Cowboys locked in the matchup. San Francisco was prepared to wait as late as Monday for the results of the final NFC Wild Card game to have their opponent set. Instead the news came as early as possible following the outcome of the first NFC game of the weekend.
Rodney Dangerfield

Pickleball Blues
Rodney Dangerfield talks about his tough neighborhood in the Big Apple: "I asked the cop how long it takes to get to the subway," and he replied, "I don't know -- nobody's ever made it."
With all due "no respect," Rodney may not have spent much time on the Monterey Peninsula. Below is a Nextdoor post from a Pebble Beach resident about an "incident" in nearby Pacific Grove. Yes, PG, the Monarch Butterfly capital of the U.S.
"The police were called on Monday for 6 of us playing pickleball at 4pm on the courts in Pacific Grove. (Yes, technically Monday isn’t a “pickleball” day but we had friends in town and wanted to play.) IMO it’s perfectly reasonable to play on empty courts no matter which day. The cop seemed ashamed for even having to tell us to leave. I know there is a great debate over pickleball but what a waste of space and city resources. Is there any further discussion on expanding pickleball recreation on those courts? I’m tempted to get noisy tennis balls... -- ok rant over.
Comments were mixed: "Go to the city website and write to the mayor and the city council," (someone has a sense of humor). "There seems to be some ridiculous notion that the Pacific Grove is a retirement community... Although the place is so sleepy I guess I can understand the confusion (edited)."
Appropriately, that comment was 'edited!' People need their sleep and in PG, "stuff happens" when they don't get it. So, Rodney, yes, New York can be tough, but at least you can play Pickleball whenever you want. Not in PG!

Giants Could Add Another OF to
Replace Haniger's power

The Giants added another talented arm to their starting rotation by acquiring former American League Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray from the Mariners on Friday. Ray is expected to miss the first half while he completes his rehab from Tommy John surgery, but the Giants view the veteran left-hander as the “ideal" No. 2 starter who can form an elite tandem with Logan Webb once he’s healthy.
While the trade filled one hole in San Francisco’s pitching staff, it may have created another in the club’s lineup, as slugger Mitch Haniger ended up going back to Seattle along with right-hander Anthony DeSclafani. Haniger disappointed in his lone season with the Giants, appearing in only 61 games due to injuries, but he crushed a career-high 39 home runs for the Mariners in 2021 and was projected to serve as a key power bat this year.

Welcome to another edition of the A’s Beat newsletter
Here are Some A's Rotation Options Beyond the Locks
Martín Gallegos @MartinJGallegos
This story was excerpted from Martín Gallegos’ A’s Beat newsletter.

it regularly in your inbox.
The A’s rotation was anything but stable in 2023, with their 24 different starting pitchers used tying the Major League record for most in a season.
Entering 2024, the A’s hope to solidify that situation. As it currently stands, right-hander Paul Blackburn and left-hander JP Sears figure to be rotation locks. Identifying a steadier group of starters beyond those two is a process that will get underway next month during Spring Training.
Ken Waldichuk would likely follow Blackburn and Sears under normal circumstances, but he remains sidelined from throwing this offseason with no timetable for a return after being diagnosed with a flexor tendon strain and UCL ligament sprain in his left elbow in October.

A’s Prospect:
A’s 2024 season, Adios Coliseum?
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
OAKLAND–According to their lease, this year is the final year for the Oakland A’s to play at the Oakland Coliseum. They will need a home field from 2025 until 2028 when they plan to inaugurate their new ballpark in Las Vegas. Where will the A’s play after 2024, like in 2025?
The options are as follows: their current home, the Oakland Coliseum; Oracle Park in San Francisco, home of the Giants; or possibly Las Vegas Ballpark, currently home to the A’s Triple-A affiliate, Last Vegas Aviators.
However, getting the players’ union to vote in favor of playing in a minor league park could present a real dilemma for the A’s and the other teams scheduled to play the A’s in Las Vegas with just 10,000 capacity. If the A’s want to play at Oracle in San Francisco, they know renting out there will not be cheap.
One fact remains for this season because of all the circumstances and unknowns in the future of this franchise. The 2024 season could be the last for the A’s at Oakland Coliseum, where they have won four World Series.
Depending on how everything develops, like the construction of the new park, the A’s would be one of the most exciting teams to cover in the major leagues. It will attract nationwide and international curiosity.
We might see more media covering the Oakland A’s in 2024 than in the previous four to five seasons. The A’s will still have many young players, and they will not be expected to be in the race for a playoff spot, but all the stories written about 2024 could make the Oakland Coliseum historical Adiós a very special one.
There have been highs and lows for the Oakland A’s. In 1979, only 653 fans showed up at Oakland Alameda County Stadium to watch the A’s beat the Mariners 6-5. In 1979, the A’s total attendance at the Coliseum was 306,763, their lowest. In the last three years, 701,430 in 2021, followed by 787,902 in 2022 and the following season in 2023 the total home attendance was 832,352. Their highs were 1972,73-74, and 1988-89-90.
In those six years the A’s won four World Series and were the envy of baseball. I do not remember anybody complaining about the Oakland Coliseum because the team was winning, and when you win, who cares where you play? Winning is what brings the fans to the park.
To think the A’s could attract one million this next season is the dream of the most optimistic optimists. But because this 2024 could be a historical last season it will make it much more interesting as many memories will be rehashed and some new ones could come to fruition at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, the fifth-oldest park in the major leagues.
Note: Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is older than the Oakland Coliseum. It is the third-oldest park in the major leagues, but in impeccable condition. It is still one of the best and most beautiful ballparks to watch a game
.
The park doesn’t make the team. In the Dodger’s world, they have both the park and the team, and the team that leads the majors in attendance will be jumping again this year with many sellouts and a heck of a team.

Being down at one point by 20 points, the Cal offense came out hot in the second half and quickly cut the lead to 10. That's when the crowd got engaged, making serious noise and feeding the Bears’ momentum. Cal eventually took the lead and battled to the end for the win. An Easy Current Events Question
I was going to moan and groan about my gambling losses but suffice it to say, don't listen to any of my prognostications when it comes to an NFL game outcome.
According to stats in the news, Saturday's playoff game is only the 4th coldest game played in NFL Playoff history.
What NFL playoff game was the coldest?
Hint: "Referee Norm Schacter tore part of his lip off when trying to remove his whistle from his mouth."
I know the answer is easy because of all the press so try remembering two of the top three coldest games played. The report of the coldest game in my answer below was enough to make me shiver.

“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
--- Samuel Beckett
by Howard Pearlstein
The old USFL and sort of new XFL are joining together to start Spring football in March as the UFL, which I think stands for The Uh Uh Football League. (As in R Crumb’s Ol’ Uncle Uh Uh & his Garbage Truck in Zap Comix.)
USFL lasted 3 years, 1983 – 86. XFL did one year and lost 60 million dollars. But wottehell, boss, there’s always someone touches the wet paint to see if it is wet, always someone to think Spring Football might work.
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.” That makes so much sense, people attribute it to Albert Einstein, but no, it was said by someone who knew whereof she spoke, a recovering addict at an Al-Anon meeting.
Football can ONLY happen as the days grow shorter and darker and colder. Thousands of years of our DNA remembers rituals invoking the powers to bring back the sun so the crops will grow again, that the Spring will come again.
We know intellectually that light and dark seasons are the result of the Earth’s axis being on a 23 degree tilt and each turn around the sun is a cycle coming around to where it began, a cycle we measure as 365 days. But on a visceral level, this one goes all the way back to peeking out of the cave, seeing daylight getting shorter and dark night getting longer and the world, such as it is, getting colder, and needing to do SOMETHING to beg the Goddess to please, let the light and the warmth come back. Call her by name and ask her what she wants -- Demeter, Persephone, Ceres, Isis, Pachamama, Ishtar, Shala, Brigid, Inari, Oshun, Ashara, Ashanti, Freyja. PLEASE!
What she wants is for the men who serve her to water the ground with their blood to make things grow. This is one tough babe, Charlie, not the date you take to the Malt Shoppe where all the kids hang out. Tribes fighting each other for the prize, sounds of hitting and crashing, howls of pain -- bleeding. Her servants are all handsome young men who look alike, and kind of true with the helmets and face masks. Most fans seeing one of their favorite team members at Safeway wouldn’t recognize him in street clothes.
This goes all the way back 10,000 years and more to just after the retreat of the Glaciers, family and friends coming together to feast on roasted cave bear and migratory birds and observe the ritual. It’s an Earth religion so each location creates its own variation, but the principle is always the same. It’s the ritual of the Long Nights, the Dark Times, bring back the sun for another season of grain. Gather together around a fire and tell the story.
These days, family and friends go over the bridges and through the freeway traffic to someone’s house, to feast and attend the ritual, re-telling the great story. It’s the story about sacred and magical things bringing light from the darkness, whether it’s Chanukah or Christmas or Thanksgiving. Or the story of the first 49er Super Bowl and The Catch. (Issue #470, January 30, 2023 -- The Goddess Rules and Football is the Ritual that Honors Her.)
But a football season starting in Spring? Spring is for baseball and soccer and long walks with someone.
About the Dubs: when you have a big mess you need to clean up, halfway through it always looks worse than when you started.

Vol. 62: Jim Harbaugh Speaks On Athlete Rev-Share Immediately After Championship Win
| |
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
by Darren Heitner
Founder of HEITNERLEGAL
Jim Harbaugh and Michigan won the National Championship.
And the very next day, he continued on his mission to empower college athletes. Some may see it as pandering to players who may be more inclined to commit to Michigan. Others, myself included, believe Harbaugh has more altruistic motivation in pushing his position that college athletes deserve a revenue share and the capacity to unionize.
"The thing I would change about college football is to let the talent share in the ever-increasing revenue," said Harbaugh the day after Michigan beat Washington in Houston. "We're all robbing the same train, and the ones that are in the position to do the heavy lifting, the ones that risk life and limb out there on the football field are the players. And not just football players — student athletes."
"The organizations are fighting hard to keep all the money — the universities, the NCAA, the conferences — and it's long past time to let the student athletes share in the ever-increasing revenue. It's billions," added Harbaugh. "I keep reading how much money's being made. I can't put a can of a soda up here, I gotta put it in a cup. Everyone is maximizing every revenue source there is, but they're not sharing it with the talent. There's no business where that would ever fly."

Bourgeois played three years at Santa Clara after transferring from Boston. During her time with the Broncos, she was an integral part of both the offense and defense. In the back she snuffed out opposing attacks and on the wings created chances with her speed and precision crosses.
She finished her Bronco career with a goal and six assists while playing in 51 matches and making 43 starts. During the 2023 campaign, she scored her first collegiate goal against Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the third trip to the tournament for Santa Clara in her three years, including a run to the College Cup in 2021.

UC Davis Takes Down Santa Barbara, Cal Baptist at Malibu Tri-Meet
MALIBU, Calif. — UC Davis recorded a 200 free relay win along with five individual event wins en route to their second conference win in as many days. The Aggies defeated UC Santa Barbara 143-119 and Cal Baptist 195.5-63.5 in a tri-meet Saturday hosted by Pepperdine University. UC Davis moves to 6-1 on the year, and 2-1 in the MPSF.
"The staff is very happy with the way the team competed the last two days against conference opponents," said UC Davis Head Coach Matt Macedo. "We had numerous in-season best times along with a few lifetime best times which puts us in a great position as we look to Fresno next week. Our focus has been fine tuning our details and while we still have some things to tighten up, I thought we did a nice job moving through two tough days of racing and thought our divers were strong on the boards."

THE HISTORY OF ST. FRANCIS YACHT CLUB
Becoming St. Francis
There is a tide that flows through the Golden Gate. There is a tide in the affairs of men.
In 1927, San Francisco Bay sailors crossed both in a single tack. The Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 had reimagined the waterfront to the east of the Army’s Presidio, and one of the developments was a harbor. After the fair, the harbor remained. With that, it became possible to imagine placing a yacht club on the San Francisco city front, and there were visionaries with that in mind. They believed the city was “the” place for a great yacht club on San Francisco Bay.
First came the not-at-all-minor matter of negotiating a rift within the venerable The San Francisco Yacht Club, which dated from 1869. That institution had been founded in the sunny shelter of Mission Bay but was driven out by industrialization. Now it needed to relocate a second time. In this case, the issue was a clubhouse in downtown Sausalito, across the bay from the city, where the press of railroad traffic and ferry traffic had become intolerable. Or perhaps we should say, the issue was that a prime piece of dry—and wet—real estate was available in a cove in the lee of Belvedere that would be ideal for a clubhouse and a marina. That seemed a perfect solution to many of the members, especially those who lived nearby. But the marina, when dredged, was never going to be deep enough for the largest yachts of the club, which would have to moor off the windward face of Belvedere.
