San Francisco 49ers Victory over Dallas
As Dallas Texan billionaire Ross Perot said when he ran for President in 1992, "It's time to take out the trash" AND "There will be a giant sucking sound, going south." Those two great lines perfectly describe the Dallas Cowboys after their 42-10 loss to the 49ers.
On the first play of the game Dallas was called for a face mask penalty. That was their highlight of the game. It quickly became Kittle Time and 14-0, Niners. Dallas would score but so would the Niners, thanks to two penalties for unnecessary roughness and a personal foul (helmet) on McCaffery on one play. After a field goal made it 21-10, it was Kittle Time (again!), then Juszczyk, and to help create that giant sucking sound going south, Jordan Mason, who ran it in to make it a 42-10 San Francisco 49ers victory over Dallas. Well said, Mr. Perot!

Remembering Dick Butkus
As a young girl in the early 60s, I attended many Packers / Bears NFL contests at Lambeau field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Each and every game between these two teams featured a heated rivalry. I wager to bet that there is not a single Packer fan who didn’t know and fear the great Dick Butkus. His was a storied career and he will go down in history as a true champion of the game!

Dick Butkus
-- Transcending the Sport
by Dave Newhouse
| |
For sixty years and counting, I’ve covered sports, witnessing some significant moments. But, sometimes, certain events of lesser historic significance have stuck with me, two of them involving Dick Butkus, who passed away last week at 80.
I happened to attend the 1979 Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio. Butkus was one of those being honored, in his first year of eligibility of course, and I kept anticipating what one of the game’s fiercest competitors might say in his acceptance speech. Would he snarl, curse, mock? All those negative thoughts crossed my mind, but Butkus, I figured, was more adept at grabbing quarterbacks than microphones.
And what did he do? He wept.
Now think about that for a moment. Here was Dick Butkus, the greatest middle linebacker ever and one of football’s most dominant figures, who seemed devoid of emotion, and he broke down in tears before hardly getting any words out.
Very often in life and in athletics, image isn’t always reality. Some football people didn’t think Butkus had a heart, but he showed it on that hot, summer afternoon. I don’t remember his speech, just that he started crying.
Butkus was born to be a middle linebacker. Yes, he was tough and fearless, but he was also intuitive and creative, turning passes into interceptions and tackles into fumbles, which he recovered at a historic pace in the NFL.
Butkus, 6-foot-3, 245 pounds, was a Chicago Bear from 1965-73, retiring early at 31 because of a badly damaged knee. He was first team All-Pro six times, played in eight Pro Bowls, and twice was NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He made the 1960s All-Decade team, and is generally listed as middle linebacker on the NFL’s all-time team.
Here is my second remembrance of Butkus: A Chicago-San Francisco game in the early 1970s, a one-sided 49ers victory. After a Bears touchdown, the ensuing PAT center snap sailed over the kicker’s head. Either the kicker or holder retrieved it and hurled a desperate throw into the end zone. And who leaped up to catch it like a basketball forward but Butkus, bad leg and all.
What was the great Butkus even doing on special teams in the hobbling twilight of a remarkable career? He caught your attention even then.
Butkus was born to be a Bear, having grown up in Chicago, then attending the University of Illinois, where he was twice an All-American in leading the Illini to a Rose Bowl victory in 1963. He was such an intense competitor even in college that he was held out of some team practices for fear of injuring teammates.
There have been many great NFL middle linebackers, naming just Mike Lucci, Joe Schmidt, Jack Lambert and Ray Lewis for space purposes. But when you think of that position, why does Butkus’ name normally come up first?
That’s how Sylvester Stallone looked at it when he named his Bullmastiff “Butkus,” who appeared in Rocky movies, protective like his namesake.

Dick Butkus, a former NFL star and legend for the Chicago Bears, passes away at 80. A larger than life player with a
personality to match.

Summary
- Photographed from one camera position behind first base, the film shows a baseball game in progress. The Reading pitcher has just let a Newark batter walk to first. He gets up on his toes, ready to head for second base. The next batter up cracks first ball pitched for a two bagger, and races for the base with a burst of speed. The first baseman just misses a put-out. A man on the coaching line yells, the umpire runs up to make a decision, and a small boy runs behind the catcher, close to the stands, where there is a great commotion.

How Giants are evaluating 'humbling' 2023 season
by Maria Guardado @mi_guardado

Shortly after the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was asked what he’d take away from his club’s disappointing 2023 campaign.
“I guess it’s not a new lesson, but the game’s humbling,” Zaidi said.
Two years after steering the Giants to a franchise-record 107 wins, Zaidi is in the midst of an off season of self-reflection, with the organization seemingly at a crossroads after its 79-83 finish this year. Manager Gabe Kapler took the fall for the Giants’ disastrous second-half swoon, but pressure is now building for Zaidi, who will be forced to rethink his own processes and philosophies as he enters the final year of his contract.

What the A's learned about their

OAKLAND -- Asked to assess how the year went for an A’s club coming off its second consecutive 100-loss season that set an Oakland record with an MLB-worst 112 losses, general manager David Forst said it would “sound a little fake” to talk about the season in a positive manner.
“Let’s be honest,” Forst said. “It was a really challenging year in a lot of ways. When you finish with the worst record in baseball, it’s clear that things didn’t go the way you expected.”
The numbers tell the story. The A’s ranked last in the Majors in team batting average (.223), slugging percentage (.370), and OPS (.668) this season, while their on-base percentage (.298) was second-lowest.

Saturday, October 7

Homecoming night was special in so many ways, welcoming the alumni and family to California Memorial Stadium under the warm temperatures, and the Golden Bears started strong and held on for as long as they could before the high powered offense of the Beavers took a commanding lead for the eventual 52-40 win. Getting the start at quarterback against the Beavers, Fernando Mendoza (#15) has the Golden Bears all-purpose yardage leader in his backfield, Isaiah Ifanse (#22), who would go on to score three touchdowns -- two rushing and one receiving -- behind the starting offense linemen: center Brian Driscoll (#60), left guard Matthew Wykoff (#74), and left tackle Barrett Miller (#62), early in the first quarter. The University of California Golden Bears played host to the Oregon State Beavers in Berkeley

Starting tight end Jack Endries (#87) collects a crossing route pass midway through the first quarter. Endries would end the game with 66 yards on four catches and a touchdown. Caption and

Taking full advantage of the Beavers miscue: Oregon State tried to catch the Golden Bears sleeping and kicked an onside attempt but Ryan McCulloch (#43) fielded the kick and ran it back to the Beavers 20-yard line before being tackled. Cal was able to quickly score. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers. | |
The defense had their hands full containing the game's
all-purpose leader, the Beavers' Silas Bolden (#7). Here the Golden Bear trio of Matthew Littlejohn (#22), Craig Woodson (#2) and the game's leading tackler, Kaleb Elams-Orr (#53), corral the receiver in the fourth quarter. Caption and photo by Ron Sellers.

Dick Butkus
I was going to do a question about the Late Great Butkus but found a 10 multiple-choice quiz instead. The red colored words below are the answers I gave to each of the 10 questions in the quiz. Each question had four choices. Six of my answers were correct, four wrong.
How well do you know Dick Butkus? Which
four did I get wrong?
Dick Butkus was born Ronald Andrew Butkus in Chicago, attended the University of Illinois and was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1965. Butkus was a Linebacker. Butkus's teammates nicknamed him
The Hammer. Butkus was named Defensive Player of the Year 3 times. Dick Butkus earned 10 Pro Bowl selections during his career. He was inducted into the
NFL Hall of Fame in 1988.

MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 1, FC Dallas 1
Quakes prepare to host Austin FC in Decision Day match
FRISCO, Texas – The San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas played to a 1-1 draw on the road on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. An opening goal from Jeremy Ebobisse helped the Quakes earn a point in Dallas as they prepare for their final match of the regular season.
The Quakes opened the scoring in the third minute from forward Jeremy Ebobisse. MVP candidate Cristian Espinoza kept a long cross in play and set up midfielder Jackson Yueill with space to send a low cross for Ebobisse to hit a sliding shot into the net. San Jose would end the first half up 1-0.
FC Dallas would find the equalizer in the 57th minute. Both sides would trade blows through the second half, with goalkeeper Daniel made a crucial save in the closing minutes to earn the point on the road for the Quakes.

Oakland’s Winless Streak Reaches Eight Following Loss in San Diego
Oakland got out in front first when a Baboucarr Njie throw-in found Bryan Tamacas, who scored his first goal of the season, giving Oakland a 1-0 lead.
However, within moments, San Diego Loyal responded in rapid succession to take the lead by the 20th minute. Joe Corona struck in the 17th minute, followed by Ronaldo Damus in the 19th, flipping the game on its head as it became 2-1 in favor of the Loyal.
Then it was Damus again in the 25th minute as the Oakland defense could not recover following the first two goals, and the home side extended their lead to 3-1.
Adrian Perez walked through Oakland’s defense untouched just before the half, and San Diego Loyal made it a dominant 4-1 going into the half.
San Diego comfortably controlled the game following the 4-1 lead for most of the second half until Emrah Klimenta scrambled home a goal for Oakland, pulling one back to make it 4-2.
Oakland will finish up the regular season at home next Saturday, October 14th, against El Paso Locomotive at Cal State University, East Bay.

Oakland Fall 3-1 in Orange County
Oakland got off to a hot start following a corner kick when Neveal Hackshaw's headed cross found Anuar Peláez, who struck the ball for the first time, giving Oakland a 1-0 lead inside of 10 minutes.
Both sides battled through the next 35 minutes, with Orange County controlling most of the possession in the first half without finding a goal as the match reached stoppage time.
Orange County earned a penalty just before the halftime break, which Milan Oloski calmly converted to make the match 1-1. Oakland switched off with the last touch of the first half when Thomas Amang scored off the corner, putting Oakland behind 2-1 at the break.
Oakland made another mistake early to start the second half. Brian Iloski cleaned it up with a beautiful strike, giving the home side a 3-1 lead. Noah Delgado used all five of his subs by the 77th minute in hopes of turning the game around, but it was not to be for Oakland, who dropped all three points.
Oakland now has San Diego Loyal away on Saturday, October 7th before finishing up the season at home vs El Paso Locomotive on October 14th at Cal State University, East Bay.

The Autumnal “What If”
Freakquinox
by Howard Pearlstein
The overlapping sports world time of What If? All possible outcomes are up in the air -- MLB Playoffs, which NFL teams get TO the playoffs, and pre-season NBA which, this year, would demand Nostrodamus using the Oak Ridge supercomputer Frontier to even get a possible answer.
A whole lot of “What If’s.” Also the question that is deep in the underlying essence of America, the big question: “Hey Tom, what If we all just told King George to take his Stamp Act and pack it in his codpiece? What if we did that?”
It’s the question that fans, especially Fantasy Anything fans ask.
You know: What if Chris Paul and Draymond don’t get along? What if Brock Purdy doesn’t actually become a super mutant hybrid of Drew Brees + Joe Montana + Joe Namath? What if a frog had wings?
Or to go back a few weeks, from Simply Silly to Seriously Sick: “What if WE can trade Chris Paul and Kuminga for Jrue Holiday?” Before having seen even a clue as to what either of them can do in the new rotation. Forget what either of them want to do.
What is that, some kind of pathological Gluttony? I don’t even know a word that can handle it… maybe the DSM… AHA! PLEONECTIC. Not just greedy but morbidly greedy, more more more until it kills you.
OK, now going to Plato’s Republic, the source code underlying the essence of western civilization. It’s about Justice, the essence of which is Truth, something we all know is a Good thing. And how to find it and know it when you find it.
And after a lot of stuff, we get to Chapter X which has the Allegory of the Cave – people imprisoned in a cave with their heads and eyes locked forward toward a wall where all they can see is shadows projected with firelight by people behind them. Shadows – OO-ee-OOO bad things.
BUT if people went outside into the sun they could see and feel all the colors and shapes of the real world, meaning TRUTH, seeing things without modification or limitation by the people who run the show. Bright sun, Truth – wow, good thing. Just step outside the cave.
Easy enough to say.
I always thought Shadows on the Wall were like TV, seeing things moving but not the same as walking around in the sun or rain. (People walking around staring at their little Wall Shadows is just grim comedy.)
Except for sports, in a different way, because sports don’t have a script. What we see is an event that is actually happening at that moment. Something not just a shadow but something real going on somewhere else.
(Also a lot of other things going on in places we do NOT want to be, like war zones, which are pretty much the ultimate “What If” situation. TV gets us there but at a comfortable distance.)
But the downside of that comfort is sometimes losing understanding that these are real things somewhere else.
Like Fantasy Football, a mild version of “What If?” A lot of fun What If-ing your favorites. A game about owning this or that person. But NOT a person: a Running Back, a Wide Receiver. ”What if we could get this one for a draft pick and a hill of beans?”
The downside is a very slight dehumanization. Just a bit, but a possible Slippery Slope. A way of thinking. Sorry to be the skunk at the garden party, but that’s another way of looking at Fantasy Football.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Bears Earn Another Draw At No. 25 Colorado
Teagan Wy Logs Four Saves In Cal’s Third Consecutive Draw
BOULDER, Colo. – Sophomore goalkeeper Teagan Wy tallied four saves as the California women's soccer team posted its fifth clean sheet of the season in a scoreless draw against No. 25 Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
Cal (5-3-5, 2-0-3 Pac-12) extended its undefeated streak in conference play to five matches while the Buffaloes (10-3-1, 2-2-1) were handed their first tie of the campaign. The draw was the third in as many matches for the Golden Bears, who were coming off a pair of 1-1 contests against Arizona State in Berkeley last Sunday and Utah in Salt Lake City on Thursday. Colorado entered the match averaging 1.86 goals per game and had been held scoreless just once this season.
The Bears were outshot 18-to-5 by the Buffs, including an 11-to-1 differential in the first 45 minutes of play, but remained poised throughout the contest as they fended off multiple threats from the hosts. Wy, who has registered all five shutouts for Cal this season, posted two saves in each half. Arguably the biggest save of the match came in the 85th minute when a shot by Colorado's Shyra James inside the box deflected off Wy before Miriam Hills booted the ball away just in front of the goal.

Dons Outshoot Bulldogs in Hard-Fought Draw
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Returning to the Hilltop for their first home conference game of the season, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (5-2-4, 0-1-1 WCC) finished in a scoreless draw on Saturday night as the Dons battled WCC foe Gonzaga (2-5-5, 0-1-1 WCC) for a full 90 minutes at Negoesco Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Firing the first shots of the evening for the green and gold, Rylan Smith and Max Hamelink ripped their first attempts of the night at 12:08 and 12:50, but could not find the back of the net to start.
At 18:58, Gabriel Bracken Serra had arguably the closest chance of the night for the Dons as the midfielder rocketed a shot off the crossbar, just inches short of giving San Francisco an early advantage.
As the half continued, USF continued to attack as the Dons would outshoot the Bulldogs 8-3 through the opening minutes of play. Notably, freshman Max Mair checked into the game for the first time in his collegiate career, which included tallying his first collegiate shot right before the halftime break at 43:51. Specifically, Mair attempted a bicycle kick goal, but Gonzaga goalkeeper Wessel Sprangers denied the forward to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

Saint Mary's Sneaks Past Volleyball in Very Close Match
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — It really couldn't have been any closer.
Saturday's final match score read as a 3-0 sweep, but it very well could have gone the complete opposite way. Visiting Saint Mary's escaped Leavey Center with a narrow, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) West Coast Conference victory, winning three sets by only a combined seven points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pick a set, any of them, and you'll find a litany of tie scores and lead changes in each one. The largest lead either team had at any time was four points – Santa Clara (9-8, 1-4 WCC) had one to start the first set and Saint Mary's (10-7, 2-3 WCC) had one late in the second set. Both of those leads were met immediately by multi-point runs from the other team, bringing the score back to a one- or two-point spread.
The Broncos had control of every set at some point, and each time the Gaels were able to figure out a way to come back and hold on. SCU led 20-18 in the first, but a 4-0 spurt by SMC powered by three kills put it ahead, 22-20. Santa Clara tied the score at 22-22 and 23-23, but Saint Mary's scored the last two points to earn a 25-23 opening-set win.
