MLB Sure Has Balls!
I would like to thank Sports Today! for Amaury Pi-Gonzalez' article on the Major League Baseball lockout in Issue #410. Amaury itemizes the key issues which need to be worked out between the players and the owners.

I can tell from my conversations with friends that there is real potential for blowback on the Game itself if this situation is not quickly resolved. There is the Safeway checker and hardcore Giants fan who is irate that players who make millions want more money and there are those who side with owners whom they feel have helped make large salaries possible. Regardless, the lack of trust between the two sides is not cause for optimism for fans.

What tilts the scales, in my opinion, in favor of the players, is the bizarre news this past week that MLB had used TWO DIFERENT BASEBALLS in the 2021 season. To tamper with the ball without the knowledge of the players is a bridge too far for me, as a fan.

The same batter with similar data analytics can hit it out of the park one game and meekly fly to center in another. Is it possible that "dull" balls were inserted into games, or situations, in which certain batters who may have been on the edge of large salary increases would end up with decreased statistical leverage? Or perhaps a lively ball could be inserted to hurt a relief pitcher on the verge of a large salary bump, so that an average hitter suddenly blasts one out of the park.

As a fan, did I experience a legitimate ball game or one which was manipulated from afar? In any event, the Lack of Trust now includes fans, not only players and owners.

For a keen review of this potent issue, I recommend an article by Sara Sanchez, A Tale of Two Baseballs and Why It Bodes Poorly For The Ongoing CBA Negotiations from 12/7/21.

This could be a long and bumpy ride, with some unintended consequences. In the interim, I'll continue to say "Go Giants," and "Play Ball," but only with a Ball which has gone through the equivalent of a TSA airport check.

Playing with an infectious ferocity which couldn't be denied, 49ers tight end George Kittle collected 13 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown, leading to a 26-23 overtime victory against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. In doing so, Kittle became the first tight end in NFL history with two straight weeks of at least 150 receiving yards and a touchdown. With the win, the Niners moved closer to solidifying their playoff hopes. The 49ers' (7-6) next foe are the Atlanta Falcons (6-7) on Sunday, December 19, at 1:05 p.m. at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. CBS • KNBR 680 AM • 104.5 FM • 107.7 FM “The Bone"

The Assault On Jimmy G.
By Jerry Monkman

Post-Bengals Overtime Victory Update!
49ers 26, Bengals 23
Jimmy G. Stats: 65% Comp., 296 yards, 2 TDs, 0 Int. 103.3 RT
"49er Postgame Show" Cast comments: "Jimmy had ice-water in his veins" -- Donte (with socks today!)
 "6 for 6 in the home stretch" Takeo - "That's Jimmy G."
"This is Jimmy G. A pro's pro -- cool in the clutch." Joe Staley
 "I'm confused." Laura B.

Any follower of sports media, from the local 'Team LA-Z-BOY' to Sports Illustrated, would be led to believe that Jimmy G., and only Jimmy G., has ever thrown an interception. This smokescreen, to obscure Coach Shanahan's ineptitude, must stop!

Compare the 49ers won-lost records with and without Jimmy G., and then, with a straight face, opine on who should stay, and who should go.

Let's start with the obvious: Respective Won-Loss records of Shanahan and Jimmy G. through 12/11/21

Jimmy G.'s record as a 49er, 2017-21: 28-14 (42 Games) (About .67%)
K. Shanahan's record: 35-43 2017-21: 35-43 (78 Games) (About 44%)
Subtract Jimmy G.'s games: Shanahan is 7-29 (About .25%)

Note: Jimmy G. led the team to a Super Bowl. Jimmy G. did not play in the secondary when the Chiefs dismantled the Niners in the fourth quarter, which is when the game was lost. The Coach blew it. We had a large lead, before the deluge.

2021 Season QB Data: Jimmy G. is #18, has a 2.6 % interception rate, as of 12/6/21 and 8 interceptions. Mahomes has a 2.5% rate, with 12 interceptions. Lamar Jackson: 3.4% interception rate and 13 picks. Joe Burrow: 3.7% and 14 picks. Tom Brady: 2.0% and 10 picks.

Yes, other QBs DO throw interceptions, and lots of them. It's true!

Historical review of other QBs who have thrown interceptions, (quickly, before some clown repeats the party line: "Oh, woe is me, Jimmy threw two interceptions vs. Seattle which cost us the game." The fact is Jimmy G. orchestrated a spectacular, 96-yard two-minute drive which only failed due to the two, dull, final plays called. Coach?)

NFL Passes Intercepted Single-Season Leaders: (yes, Johnny Unitas, Ken Stabler, Brett Favre/35 picks, Joe Namath, Terry Bradshaw and Y.A. Tittle are on the list:) Did the media OBSESS over their interceptions as it continues to do over Jimmy G.'s relative few, usually with a 300-pound lineman up in his grill? Of course not. The absence of an Agenda
may explain that difference.

Wikipedia Pages: Worth the read!

Conclusion: The media, particularly local, is engaged in a non-stop, disinformation MEDIA ASSAULT vs. JIMMY G. Why?

To try and hide Shanahan's poor record, especially in the fourth quarters, when games are decided. Why do this?

Contracts are a good place to start, but I will let others focus in on the parties involved and the intricacies of that saga.

The point here is, to paraphrase Henny Youngman: "Take My Coach, Please!" Leave Jimmy G. here and let him work with Trey as a double-threat, unstoppable duo. It was tried early in the season and showed potential to confuse opponents, but was quickly abandoned.

And ask any 49er player, (privately), their choice for team leader: Coach 7-29, or QB 28-14?
49ers Hot Corner
Well, ok, finally -- beating the Bengals with a coming-from-behind long
drive is a 49er tradition
By Howard Pearlstein

But a 49er tradition is also riding a tight end to a win.

Today George Kittle, but all the way back to Monty Stickles, with stops in between with Brent Jones and Vern Davis and Russ Francis, Delanie Walker, John Frank and some others...

And then finishing with a final-seconds pass and an incredible head-scratching "How did he do that?" reception to a wide receiver that makes us remember "The Catch," the immortal one from Joe Montana to Dwight Clark, but in Bengal-beating tradition, Montana to John Taylor... and today, Jimmy Garoppolo to Brandon Aiyuk.

Sure didn't seem likely after a first half of WTF?

And a lot of other familiar but unprintable expressions to signify the epic ineptitude we were watching, the only printable one was from the heretical Discordian Bible which opens with the sentence:

"In the beginning was the word, and the word was OOPS."

And the only positive comment that was made as the first half ended was a jail break movie reference: "Wow -- Azeez Al-Shaair is as dangerous as Con Air!"

But after all is said and done, the 9ers pulled it out with a W.

Oakland A's Master Plan
Howard Terminal -- Time to set sail?

My Christmas Wish List, 2021
by Pete Elman

Some things are worth fighting for.

Democracy, for example. We are living in dangerous times, when the very foundation of our republic is under assault from forces within, when the sacred Constitution, on whose shoulders our freedom and way of life has stood for 234 years, is being trampled on, incredibly, by none other than the Supreme Court.

The lines between truth and lies, right and wrong, compassion and greed, and good and evil are so blurred that millions of Americans would apparently rather see a loved one die from a horrible virus than lose a culture war to the liberals. George Orwell, meet Margaret Atwood; 1984 has met Gilead.

So my first wish for Christmas is that things get better, because they aren’t looking good. But I toil in the distraction of sports, and I cover the last team standing in Oakland. And they are worth fighting for.

In May 1969 I was living in Boston, attending college. I went to Fenway Park to watch a game between the Red Sox and the A’s, who, in just their second season in Oakland, were but two years from winning five consecutive division titles, with three championships sandwiched in the middle.

They were a young, mustachioed, feisty, charismatic bunch, featuring Jim “Catfish” Hunter, John “Blue Moon” Odom, Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers, Sal Bando, Bert Campaneris, Reggie Jackson, and Joe Rudi. None of them were older than 27. That day I retrieved a homer off the bat of Rudi that was bouncing around the right centerfield bleachers, and I have been a die hard A’s fan ever since.

At the time, little did I know that I would end up living and raising a family in Oakland. So that is my second wish this year—that the A’s, who have been on the verge of leaving town for 20 years, can somehow remain in Oakland, or at least nearby. And I have some cards to send—don’t worry, they are mercifully short.

An Open Letter to John Fisher:
Dear John,
I know that you have been impugned, maligned and cursed at since 2005, when you and Lew Wolff purchased the A’s. I also know that you donated nearly $9 million to a dark money group which opposed Barack Obama in the 2012 election. And I hear you’re worth upwards of three billion bucks.

But redemption is possible, Mr. Scrooge of the Gap fortune. You have two choices; open your wallet, agree to build a new stadium on a suitable site and pay free agents to stay…or sell the team. You think folks hate you now? Wait until the ghost of Christmas future---Opening Day 2025, in Las Vegas…

An Open Letter to Dave Kaval:
Dear Mr. President,
I’ll keep this one brief, Dave. Forget the Peralta site; forget Howard Terminal. It looks like you’re about to sell our team to the Vegas mob, and it doesn’t seem to bother you and your Stanford pedigree one iota. No one trusts you. You should do the honorable thing…resign.

An Open Letter to Libby Schaff:
Dear Madam Mayor,
You like to constantly remind us that you’re an “Oakland Girl.” But do you want to be remembered as the mayor who allowed ALL THREE of our beloved teams to get away on your watch? Back in May you endorsed the ill-starred Howard Terminal plan, loudly proclaiming, “Hell no, we won’t let them go!” More like two down, one to go.

The folks at the Port see it differently; to them it’s a complicated, $12 billion unrealistic environmental and parking nightmare. And as far as staying at the Coliseum site, potentially a viable choice? Well, MLB has announced that they unequivocally oppose a stadium project there. Where does that leave us?

An Open Letter to A’s Fans:
Dear A’s Faithful,
There is a viable option, an idea my friend Tom has been promoting for years: Build a park in Pleasanton—and They Will Come! Think of the advantages:

  • Warm summer nights and an easy drive from several population centers: San Francisco, San Jose, the East Bay, the tony suburbs of East Contra Costa County, Stockton and Sacramento
  • Tons of space, lots of it owned by the county (i.e. the fairgrounds)
  • Unlimited parking
  • Near BART stations and freeways

For some reason, this idea has not been seriously floated. Maybe it’s time. And they can still be the Oakland A’s. After all, the 49ers play in Santa Clara.

So those are my Christmas wishes, Santa. Please don’t take away my team, especially to that God-forsaken den-of-iniquity desert town. Do we care about honoring the tradition of Reggie, Vida, Catfish, Rollie, and hometown heroes Rickey, Stew and Eck? You bet we do. Oh yeah, and can you save our country while you’re at it?

Other Countries Join Boycott — What else is New?

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
As recently reported, here and in other media sports sites, the United States announced a boycott of the Winter Olympic Games to take place in Beijing, China next February, because of their continued record of human rights abuses. This is more of a symbolic boycott, as the U.S. pledged not to send any government dignitaries or VIPs.

Aside from that, U.S. athletes will travel and take part in the competition. So far these countries have done same as the U.S., no diplomat dignitaries, but their athletes will make the trip: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Lithuania and New Zealand and there might still be others.

A total of 95 countries are scheduled to be in Beijing for this winter Olympics. Many believe this is not really a serious boycott. So far no countries have prohibited their athletes from attending. Many decades ago, there were big arguments here in the United States about such controversies, whether or not to send athletes because of political reasons.
American runner Jesse Owens setting a new Olympic record in the
200-meter sprint in August of 1936

In 1936 the Berlin Olympic Games (summer) was much more than another big sporting event. Hitler used it for worldwide propaganda when his ambitions of world domination were just starting to form. A few years later (1939) the Nazis invaded Poland, then Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Yugoslavia and Greece. Obviously there was no boycott by the U.S. However, there was a lot of debate in the U.S. if the country should send their athletes to Hitler’s Germany. (The U.S. didn’t declared war on Germany until after Pearl Harbor in 1941.)

Many U.S. athletes believed the best way to defeat the Nazis was to beat them in athletic competition; others however, believed to participate was like sending an endorsement of Hitler. After a long debate in the country those that opposed the boycott won and the U.S. sent their athletes to that historic 1936 Olympics. The rest is history.

There were many other times that countries have boycotted other countries. This is nothing new and there will be more boycotts, I am sure to come in the future. China has already blasted back at the U.S. and other countries, like Communist governments usually do. “They are right and the rest of the world is not.”

NBC owns the television rights and will carry the games; they know that anything that the Chinese government doesn’t like on the NBC feed will be censored. That’s what they do, because when some of their own athletes in China criticize their government they “disappear.” Famous tennis star Peng Shuai is a story currently developing.

Sometimes athletes speak out against human rights violations, and that is fine when done here in the U.S. and other democracies, but not in China or dictatorships where free speech is not allowed. Actually in communist countries speech is allowed as long as you agree with those in power.
Enes Kanter Freedom of the Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics player Enes Kanter Freedom – “Freedom” he added to his name after recently becoming a U.S. naturalized citizen -- was born in Turkey and has made serious comments about that government and their abuses as well as China and their human rights abuses. It is too bad other players in the NBA have been very quiet on this front.

China is a huge market for the NBA, and most players chose not to compromise their careers talking about China. Let’s say they like to keep selling their Nike shoes here, which are made there for pennies.

I hope for the very best to all athletes, U.S. and from all countries, that will participate. But to be surprised about political implications during Summer or Winter Olympics is to be totally disconnected with the world we are in.

Enjoy the Olympics, if you can.

High-Performing Teams:
Lessons from the Sports World

According to basketball legend Michael Jordan, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” Without organization-wide teamwork, leadership, and trust, sustaining a championship level of performance—in sports or business—is highly unlikely. How do leaders of the most successful sports franchises overcome the hurdles of free agency, arcane rules, injuries, egos, salary battles, operational challenges, and the human element? How can these lessons be effectively applied to every type of business?

In this course, we will look at how sports organizations achieve smooth and superior transitions from year to year, especially after the rigors of championship seasons. Difference makers in the world of sports, including team executives, general managers, athletic directors, coaches, media observers, and athletes, will discuss the elements necessary to create and maintain elite-performing organizations, and reveal how a prevailing commonality among all of them includes a powerful culture. Students will leave the course able to apply broad relevant concepts to their challenges, such as alignment of goals, adherence to culture, and pervasive interactive communication, as well as numerous operational pearls of wisdom
from guest experts.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca receives approval for major upgrades

New Start/Finish bridge, track repaving among renovations

MONTEREY, Calif., Dec. 9, 2021 – It’s already one of the premier race circuits in the world, but WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is about to get even better.

In a 4-1 super majority vote, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors yesterday adopted a resolution that green lights funding for significant renovations to take place in the next 18 months as part of the five-year Capital Improvement Program. The track surface itself will be repaved for the first time since 2007, a new Start/Finish bridge will be constructed that will provide greater pedestrian flow and allow golf cart crossings, and the Turn 3 Paddock Pavilion will see considerable enhancements.

The timeline for the projects will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but the goal remains November 2022 through April 2023. The Laguna Seca Recreation Area, which is home to the race circuit and scenic campground, is owned by the County of Monterey.

“I want to thank the supervisors and county staff who paved the way for us to begin the much-needed improvements to this world-renowned race track and recreation area for current and future generations,” said John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “The investment is a significant step toward keeping this valuable economic engine running smoothly for the benefit of residents and businesses throughout Monterey County.”

A number of business leaders, community groups and service organizations voiced their support of the improvements, which will provide the foundation for future events, and benefit tourism in Monterey County. They echoed the common sentiment that when WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is busy, all businesses – from locally owned to international chains – benefit from the increased visitation. Moreover, major sponsors added that it is important to the overall brand that there be continued upgrades and modernization to the iconic race track and facilities.

WeatherTech Raceway has a rich heritage, and hosts many of the biggest racing organizations in the United States each year. Ranging from the motorcycle racing events of MotoAmerica and AHRMA, to the technologically advanced IMSA classes to the open wheel roar of INDYCAR, the track sees plenty of topnotch action each year. The track is also home to the prestigious Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, where hundreds of historic race cars celebrate history annually.

These improvements will ensure every event at WeatherTech Raceway will remain at the highest competitive level for drivers, while also adding features that enhance the fan experience.

Navigating a career in any business is highly complex, especially in the world of sports and entertainment. Knowing how to separate the logo on your business card from your personal identity is a valuable skill for creating your own career path. Building a career in the sports industry is easier said than done, especially since the business is extremely addictive. Cool corporate logos and titles should never control your true sense of self; your name on the card is much more important! Welcome to the world of LOL, or “Loss of Logo.”
Written for aspiring sports professionals, current sports industry professionals, and any career enthusiasts who are chasing the fancy logo and corner office, LOL, Loss of Logo: What’s Your Next Move? offers valuable takeaways for everyone. Comprised of powerful perspectives from 38 multitalented industry professionals, this book will give you the tools to succeed in the industry, with or without your logo.
The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
