Jimmy G. 1 - Provocateurs 0
Despite the efforts of pundits, commentators, and outright shills for Trey, (Matt M., do you hear me?), Jimmy G. is back. He is the starter and he will finish the season as the starter. The lobbyists for Trey, or for an inflammatory story, don't include Trey, who has far too much class for that, or his teammates, who are rock-solid for #10. It is the folks who wait in the bowels of the stadiums, microphones in hand, who feel obliged to stir the pot.

Jimmy G. did not play safety when the Chiefs ran wild through the secondary in the Super Bowl. But for them it has always been, "He cost us the Super Bowl."

The team was 24-8 with him and dismal without him. He led the team to a Super Bowl. He did not "lose it."

Finally, after today's game, Jimmy G. is back, body parts intact and with a revived corps of receivers and motivated players, and although the team remains plagued by injuries which will make the climb back to the top for the Niners difficult, Jimmy G. and the 49ers are BACK!

To the "microphone people," find a new story line. You depress me.

Losing Patience
Is it REALLY so hard to at least include my RAIDERS who are WINNNG
( 5-2 ) this year, never mind Jon Gruden's departure? Why don't you ask your readers if they are interested in tidbits about the former OAKLAND Raiders?

The Raiders still have the most Loyal, Ardent & Loud Fans in all of the NFL and, in fact, if you do a little research on this subject, you will find that RAIDERS tickets are the MOST sought after tickets in all of pro football!

And Editor, truly you must know that, "What STAYS in VEGAS, CAME from OAKLAND!"

Responsible for one of the most important plays of the season and perhaps one which revives the 49ers fortunes going forward, speedy wide receiver Deebo Samuel raced down the sidelines for 83 yards, rejuvenating a flagging Niners offense on Sunday. While Samuel didn't score, his effort lead to a touchdown and energized a second half offense. Final score: San Francisco 49ers 33, Chicago Bears 22. The third-year pro now has 819 receiving yards through seven games, breaking Jerry Rice's franchise record of 781 yards in that span in 1986. The 49ers

Wondolowski scores 170th MLS goal in Quakes' victory

SANDY, Utah - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Real Salt Lake 4-3 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Four different players scored for the Quakes, including Chris Wondolowski who tallied his 170th career goal to extend his own MLS record. Saturday's match marked San Jose's final road game of the 2021 season.

RSL took an early lead in the ninth minute. Albert Rusnak played a give-and-go with Damir Kreilach and took a low shot that was partially blocked by goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski but trickled in.

San Jose equalized in the 37th minute. Cade Cowell dribbled past his defender and sent a low pass across the front of goal which Carlos Fierro finished from point-blank range.

The Quakes then took a 2-1 lead on the final touch of the first half when Wondolowski headed home a corner kick at the back post.

The Earthquakes doubled their lead in the 69th minute through a spectacular individual effort by Cowell. A long throw by Marcinkowski found Cowell with space and the 18-year-old dribbled between two defenders before slotting a shot with the outside of his right foot inside the far post.

San Jose then found a fourth goal in the 79th minute when Jackson Yueill forced a defensive turnover and finished the breakaway.

Real Salt Lake pulled a goal back in the 85th minute. A floating cross from the right wing found Maikel Chang at the back post for the first-timed finish. Real Salt Lake then scored again three minutes into stoppage time, Rusnak's second of the match, but could not find the equalizer as time expired.

The Earthquakes will now return to San Jose to prepare for their regular season finale against FC Dallas on Sunday, Nov. 7. The match, presented by PayPal, will kick off from PayPal Park at 3:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

An Exceptional Voice
George Selleck is a member of the Stanford's Basketball Hall of Fame

George Selleck --
A Man for All Ages

By Dave Newhouse
Let me introduce someone to the sports hemisphere, or perhaps
re-introduce, but George Selleck continues to make his mark as a playmaker.

If the name isn’t familiar, well, Selleck has been out of the spotlight for decades, even better than a half-century, yet he’s still contributing to mankind.

But, first, a refresher course. Selleck was a standout basketball player at Stanford in the 1950s. How much of a standout? Stanford’s greatest hoopster ever, Hank Luisetti, called the 5-foot-8 Selleck “The greatest basketball player I ever saw pound for pound.” The legendary Bill Russell, who faced Selleck while in a University of San Francisco uniform, labeled him as “the biggest little man in basketball.”

Selleck was a playmaking guard before “playmaker” became part of the sports lexicon. He could shoot, too, and thus was inducted into the Stanford Basketball Hall Of Fame and the Pacific-12 Conference Hall Of Honor. He was drafted by the then Philadelphia Warriors and by baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates as an infielder with a clever glove. But he turned his future over to education, and thus became Dr. George Selleck, with a doctorate in Counseling Psychology.

He would be identified today as an educator, chosen as one of the “100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America” by the Institute for International Sports at the University of Rhode Island. And he’s still educating, or playmaking, at the age of 87.

Selleck has a new book out — his 10th —titled Kian And Me: Gifts From A Grandson. This unique book is a compilation of letters he has written to his toddler grandson, Kian, thanking him, in essence, for teaching grandfather new lessons in life, merely by observing a child’s exploration of the world around him.

Selleck started out as Kian’s baby sitter, and wound up as his biographer, even though Kian still has a couple of years to go before kindergarten. His energy and intuitiveness not only imbued Selleck, but nursed him mentally through various medical issues of the aged. Playing with a child, and the playmaking that’s required, has had a healing effect on grandpa that is expressed brilliantly in prose.

“Those mornings with you,” Selleck wrote Kian, “and the connection I felt with you, almost immediately helped me move closer to a better version of myself. Thank you, Kian. For inspiring and guiding me through the most difficult time of my life. Thank you for being here, in your springtime of life, when — in my winter — I needed you the most.”
Kian and Me, Gifts from a Grandson, will also be available via Amazon

Their beautiful old-young relationship touches the mind and the soul. This singular book, published by Post Hill Press, a subsidiary of Houghton Mifflin, will be available for ordering or purchase November 7. Not only does Selleck’s book serve as a valuable teaching mechanism on child-rearing and also senior citizen rejuvenation, it will bring smiles and tears to the reader.

Selleck has a special feeling for the young in general. He is founder and director of Lead2Play, a unique approach to athletics, giving youth the leadership role in determining how their games will be played. His endearing book on Kian offers a life-beginning perspective on the world of play.

Oakland Roots Win to Earn Playoff Berth in Inaugural USL Championship Season

Oakland Roots have punched their ticket to the 2021 Championship Playoffs on the final day of the regular season after a win over Sporting Kansas City II.

Oakland Roots returned home Saturday to host Sporting KC II in front of a sold out crowd for their final home game of the 2021 season. Roots needed a win as well as a loss or a tie from LA Galaxy II to secure their spot in the postseason. Less than three minutes in, Chuy Enriquez found the back of the net off a poor save attempt from KC goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. Already on the board, Roots looked to maintain possession and keep a strong defensive front. They carried the lead into halftime as KC had yet to register a single shot on target.

To start the second half Roots followed a similar formula of controlling possession and not allowing KC to penetrate the attacking third. An early second half injury to Roots captain Wal Fall brought Ariel Mbumba into the game to keep a strong midfield presence. Late into the game, the match got a lot more physical with two Roots players earning yellow cards. Sporting KC tried their best to up the attack but it wasn’t enough as Roots cruised to victory.

With the Roots win and a loss from LA Galaxy II, Roots will travel to El Paso to face the Locomotive in the first round of the playoffs on Friday, November 5th

Wherefore Art Thou, Warriors?

by Pete Elman,
with Gary “G-Man” Caine

It is patently unfair and unrealistic to judge an NBA team on the basis of the first six games of what will be at least an 82-game marathon, but a few things have been revealed already. Our preliminary reaction is predictably mixed—but a quick peek behind wizard Steve Kerr’s curtain reveals some enticing possibilities.

A look behind the title of this piece:

Wherefore: People often misinterpret one of the most famous questions ever posed as meaning: “Where are you, Romeo?” But what the Bard really meant is “Why are you Romeo?” For 48 years the team should’ve been called the Oakland Warriors—and they weren’t. Why then the move to the city? $$$---lots of ‘em. The Warriors are not based in Oak-town anymore; they toil in the over-priced playground of the nouveau riche, Baghdad-by-the-Bay (shout-out to Herb Caen.)

Art : Thank God we still have the wondrous Steph Curry, the Picasso of the hardwood, but what about the rest of the guys? Is it still "high" art they are practicing?

Warriors: The burning question is this: Will they still fight like the great battling Warrior teams of yore? (Cue up Andre Igoudala, vintage 2015)
After six games, what have we learned?
Coach Steve Kerr has Golden State leading the Western Conference with a 5-1 record in the young season

The Warriors are 5-1 through Halloween. Trick or treat? Some say trick--- two wins against the OKC draft picks, one against a depleted and ancient Lakers squad, another over the Kawhi-less Clip Joint., and a nail-biter over a scrappy Kings team. And how about turnovers? I had a luscious blueberry one just yesterday. But the ones the Warriors are serving aren’t sweet—they’re bitter, frequent…and costly.

But leave your skepticism on the table for a second--there is an argument for treat, and a real reason for optimism. We are getting MVP-level Curry, the one player that every team plans for, schemes against, and then holds, bumps and double and triple teams; no other player commands the opponents’ attention like Steph does.

Not KD, trapped in dysfunctional Brooklyn, not Giannis, who’s feeling the pressure to repeat, not young Maverick top gun Luka, not even old Mr. James down in Laker land. Most importantly, the Warriors, led by number 30, are showing signs of “playing with joy” after two years in Covid limbo.

We will not have a true read on this season until we get through November. The next 16 games will bring the Warriors to the one quarter mark of the season. These tests will include nine games against some good teams: Brooklyn, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Portland, the Clippers, Charlotte twice, Atlanta, and Chicago. The expectation is that the Warriors will be above .500 on December 1, hopefully headed towards a top six playoff position, thereby avoiding the dreaded play-in game—the one that ended their season last year.

So, now that Halloween has passed we can separate the candy. A sober assessment of what we’ve seen so far from the Warriors—without the specter of ghosts of seasons past—is in order. How good is this team? How good can they be?

The Good:
1. The roster is clearly improved: additions Nemanja Bjelica, Otto Porter and Gary Payton II are a major upgrade over Oubre, Bazemore, Paschall, Mulder, Mannion and Wanamaker. The new guys, so far at least, fit in perfectly.

2. We are watching in real time the growth of the wing brigade: Jordan Poole, Damion Lee and Juan Toscano Anderson.

3. Andrew Wiggins, now that he’s gotten the memo that a vaccine won’t hurt you, seems to be in a good place. Consistency is his calling card.

4. The unlikely—but so far effective--return of the prodigal sage, Iggy, is inspiring. And, lo and behold, Steve Kerr has him on the floor at crunch time.

5. Steph and Draymond still got it. Cross your fingers they stay healthy.

The Bad:
1. Turnovers are killing us.

2. The team does not have a reliable second scorer.

3. There is no height, no bruising rebounder or shot-blocker patrolling the paint.

4. So far, the team has showed an inability to put lesser teams away in the second half.

The Questions:
1. Will the return of Klay and James Wiseman (see photo) make a substantive difference?

2. Can teenagers Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga contribute this season? Is Kerr still a charter member of Don Nelson’s “I don’t play rookies” school of coaching?

3. Will Steph and Draymond’s health hold up?

4. Is that extra-small crunch time lineup---with no one over 6'7"--realistic?

5. Can Kerr’s trifecta philosophy; pass the ball, play swarming defense and protect the basketball, plus the effective implementation of Nellie’s legacy of small ball, get them to the Conference finals?

These questions will all be answered in due time. What Shakespeare meant with those four famous words was that changing the names—in his case Capulet and Montagu, and in this case the names on the back of the jerseys--will not change Romeo’s, or in this case the Warriors’---identity. As coach Kerr (playfully?) admitted, “We’re chasing wins this year.” Stay tuned—and buckle up.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
