The Tony Awards -- Pardon The Difference
The Tony Awards, with which we are all familiar, recognize excellence in Live Broadway Theatre. This NEW Tony Award is presented for a different medium, Sports Talk Shows. The inaugural Winner, in the category of Most Ridiculous Buffoonery, is none other than TONY Kornheiser, (of Pardon the Interruption), who will undoubtedly consider it an Honor since it is named after him.

I have a high threshold of pain when it comes to Sports Talk Shows. After all, they must deliver entertainment as well as, hopefully, information and informed opinion. But when TONY Kornheiser on PTI plays a psychiatrist who creates, and then attempts to analyze a Stephen Curry "slump," after two games, my id takes over and my superego hits Pause. I would rather watch a rerun of Frasier than listen to the Winner of the new Tony Award for Most Ridiculous Buffoonery.

"Wanna Be Freud" glibly insults the greatest player in the game, then waves his little Canadian flag and bids adieu. To quote a much wiser source, Rodney Dangerfield, "I went to see a psychiatrist about my problems and told him I wanted to have a second opinion. He told me "you're ugly too!" Adieu!

To paraphrase Mick Jagger: "The Rams Are Under My Thumb." JimmyG orchestrated an 83-yard drive to tie the score (in 61 seconds!) at game's end and led the 49ers to a classic, overtime win which qualified them as a playoff team. A very Dangerous team! The Rams had won 45 straight games when they had the lead at half time. Klay Thompson's Return
Klay Thompson is back! WITH GUSTO! After missing two consecutive seasons with ACL and Achilles tears, Klay Thompson returned to the Golden State Warriors lineup on Sunday night versus the Cleveland Cavaliers. Forty seconds into the game, on his first possession, Thompson drove to the basket and sank a floater. Thompson would end up with 17 points in the Warriors' 96-82 victory over the visiting Cavaliers. The Warriors' (30-9) next game is Tuesday when they travel to Memphis (28-14) to take on the Grizzlies at 5 p.m.
San Jose State Spartans
Greg Robinson, who served as San Jose State University's football defensive coordinator during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, died at the age of 70 on January 5. His San Jose State position was his last in a
40-year coaching career which included nine bowl wins in 11 games and Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII victories as the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator.

In 2015 San Jose State won the AutoNation Cure Bowl, defeating Georgia State 27-16, in Coach Robinson's final game as a coach and he was carried off the field after the victory.

Life As A Broadcaster
I am happy to share this photograph, taken a couple of hours prior to a playoff game at Yankee Stadium, and some of my many memories. (Photo from APG's personal collection.)
Broadcasting from
Yankee Stadium

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

For many broadcasters, (including yours truly), calling a game from New York is a unique experience. It is the #1 radio and television media market in the United States and Yankee Stadium is a special place. If you were born in New York or lived in New York, you probably will understand.

Although I was born 1,300 miles from New York, in Havana, Cuba, I did live in New York, (Queens to be exact) after I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1968. For a couple of years, while in New York, I attended Yankees as well as Mets games. However, I was always much more of an American League fan, so more often I attended the games at Yankee Stadium.

The old Yankee Stadium had a unique atmosphere, a certain magnetism; after all, it was called the House that Ruth Built. The New York Yankees have a storied history, winning 27 World Series and nobody is close. In 2021 the New York Yankees franchise had an estimated value of $5.25 billion, which ranks #1 today among all 30 MLB teams.

As a young man who started to dabble in journalism, I attended many games at old Yankee Stadium. I remember a muggy summer afternoon during the middle of a doubleheader when the Yankees honored the great Mickey Mantle. I remember watching some great Yankees in the 1960s like Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, Joe Pepitone, and Luis "Tite" Arroyo, whom I would interview a few decades later when I was in New York broadcasting during a series and during one of the famous Yankee Legends Reunions. Some of my first articles were published in a Spanish weekly from Newark, New Jersey.

My first of many trips as a broadcaster to New York was in 1981 when it was still the old Yankee Stadium, with all the history hanging from its walls. That was a short season because of a player's strike. I traveled to broadcast the Oakland A's vs. Yankees after the A's had beaten the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees eliminated the Oakland A's and thereafter moved to the 1981 World Series, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees, won by the Dodgers in six games. I also covered the World Series games at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles.

In 40-plus years in the baseball broadcasting business I have traveled to all 30 major league cities, including in the 1990s when there was a team in the beautiful city of Montréal, Canada, the Montreal Expos. But there is no other city for yours truly that offers the vibe of New York City, especially Yankee Stadium when it comes to broadcasting a game.

The photograph above was taken inside the visiting broadcast booth at the new Yankee Stadium in 2018, prior to the AL Wild Card game between the visiting Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees. It was taken approximately two hours prior to the first pitch. I am ready with the lineups and my media notes for both teams. I had my luggage with me to continue the postseason after New York in Boston, but the Yankees eliminated the A's and instead of continuing to Boston, I returned to Oakland the next morning. Such is the life of a broadcaster, always at the mercy of the team, but that is part of the fun in this very interesting and challenging career.

Baseball's Hall of Fame is on my mind...

The next group of Baseball HOF inductees will be announced on January 25. Players selected for the
Hall of Fame are generally selected by the position

Another Defiant Doubter
Novak Djokovic, the 20-time major champion, awaits an immigration hearing in Melbourne on Monday in hopes of playing the Australian Open. Above, Djokovic waves to supporters from the balcony of his
Australian quarantine hotel

Grow Up, Novak

by Pete Elman

Novak Djokovic, Great at Tennis and Bad at Science, Awaits His Fate” wrote the courageous and trailblazing journalist Lindsay Crouse in Saturday’s New York Times, referencing the tennis star’s quarantine in a less-than-five star hotel in Melbourne because he won’t take a shot.

Djokovic is not a prisoner; he can leave the country anytime he wants. But he can’t play in the Australian Open. Good for Australia.

Lindsay Crouse has publicly taken on misogyny directed at female athletes who wanted to become mothers; exposed the abusive track coach Alberto Salazar; and fought paparazzi who made her life miserable because she shared an ex-boyfriend with Lady Gaga. Her piece is well-written and I agree with every word she wrote.

But rather than pile on Novak Djokovic, I’d like to offer a parallel yet slightly different perspective. Why is it that Djokovic and Aaron Rodgers, the absolute best at what they do--and possibly the best ever at their respective professions--fiercely cling to their misinformed anti-science stance? And what makes them so brazenly unafraid of the consequences?

Two reasons: Number One, as always, is money, Those two sports, governed by ruthless organizations--the NFL and the WTA--have decided that the collateral damage that results from their top stars parroting insane anti-vaxx misinformation (this with Omicron crushing the world) is worth it. We gotta get our ratings say the tycoons who run the show as they shamelessly suck up to the networks.

But Number Two may even be worse. These same billionaires are convinced that, in time, the public will give these superb athletes a pass. And the tragedy is they are right. You want proof? Kyrie Irving is suiting up for the Nets tonight at Portland.

Novak Djokovic has been the Number One player in the world for seven years, with no signs of slowing down. Therefore he has a responsibility to fans, young players, and the general public to display character, if not leadership. Like Aaron Rodgers.

Just as I once rooted for the brilliant Packer quarterback, whose behavior this season has been less than noble -- Who cares? Just get us another title, number 12! -- I have been an ardent, outspoken fan and defender of the Joker for a dozen years.

His cool demeanor has been unfairly taken as a lack of passion, and his assassin-like talents on the court have been mistakenly diminished by the athleticism of Rafael Nadal and the grace and charisma of Roger Federer, his twin foils.

Yet in this instance he has decided to put himself above the public good—in this case the 25 million Australians who have worked their collective asses off and sacrificed for 22 months; their low COVID numbers reflect that commitment.

Novak believes that the rules don’t apply to him. And his misguided fans fall right in line, parroting the old trope that the whole world has it in for the Serbians. Novak, his father, and Serbian Aussies have double downed on the persecution card. Give me a break. It was twenty years ago that the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia reaffirmed Serbian war crimes.

Between 1992-1995, by seeking to eliminate a part of the Bosnian Muslims, the Bosnian Serb forces committed genocide. They targeted for extinction forty thousand Bosnian Muslims living in Srebrenica. And they deliberately and methodically killed 8,000 of them solely on the basis of their identity.
U.S. Open line judge Laura Clark was accidently hit in the throat
by a ball from Novak Djokovic

In his defense, through his foundation, Djokovic has put his money where his mouth is, and has displayed humility, compassion, class and character on the world stage, unlike many of his contemporaries in the professional sports arena. And he did act graciously after accidentally hitting a lineswoman with a ball in frustration at the 2020 US Open, necessitating his disqualification.

But in Australia last week he had a chance to show maturity, class, courage and teamwork--and he double faulted. This is not the first time he has dropped the ball.

In June 2020, with COVID raging, he organized The Adria Tour, a tournament that was held in Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia, featuring an unmasked super-spreader indoor all-night party at a nightclub, hosted by Djokovic.

The Joker is known for acting less than honorable on occasion, accused of faking injuries and taking dubious medical timeouts. And he has some pretty far out ideas.

"I know people that through energetical (sic) transformation, through the power of prayer and gratitude, manage to turn the most toxic food or the most polluted water into the most healing water. Because water reacts and scientists have proven that molecules in the water react to our emotions to what is being said," he said.

Former player and respected tennis analyst Mary Carillo had this to say. "I'm very disturbed that Djokovic is saying you can change toxic water to drinking water. This is dangerous stuff." Dangerous, like saying vaccinations don’t work.

Djokovic’s good friend Rafael Nadal stated that he feels that Australia's policy of excluding non-vaccinated individuals is an appropriate one. "I think if he wanted, he would be playing here in Australia without a problem," Nadal said.

Will the narrative ever be discussed factually? Or honestly? And why are Rochelle Walensky and the CDC being raked over the coals for shifting their guidance on COVID, when the landscape is literally moving under their feet daily?

Meanwhile the real culprits, the 37% that are too lazy, misinformed or hateful to get fully vaccinated, get a pass. I guess they’d rather have the “former guy” and Scott Atlas in charge. I shudder to think of that apocalyptic scenario.

So as the numbers surge, hospitals overflow, health workers are burned out and the country is reeling, a misinformed Supreme Court is about to overturn OSHA’s employer vaccine mandate. Is this a bad dream? I wish…but it’s reality.

We must all do our part, and that includes you, Novak. Grow up.

Earthquakes Sign Slovakian Midfielder
Jan Gregus
Quakes selected Gregus in Re-Entry Draft Stage 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed Slovakian midfielder Jan Gregus to a contract for the 2022 season, using Targeted Allocation Money, with a club option for 2023. The Earthquakes selected Gregus with the seventh pick in Stage 2 of the 2021 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft on December 23.

"We're very excited to welcome Jan to San Jose," said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. "We have always thought very highly of him during his time in Major League Soccer and know his ability to impact matches in many ways. He's also familiar with the unique challenges of this league and his experience, both domestic and international, will be an asset for our club."

Gregus, 30, competed for Minnesota United FC as a Designated Player for the past three seasons, totaling 63 regular season appearances, 57 starts, two goals and 18 assists. In 2019, his first season in MLS, Gregus made 30 appearances and tallied 11 assists, tied for 11th most in the league, helping Minnesota to a fourth-place finish in the Western Conference. He then scored the team's lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to the LA Galaxy in the First Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Gregus also tallied a goal and an assist in four matches during the 2019 U.S. Open Cup, helping Minnesota reach the Final vs. Atlanta United FC.

The following year, Gregus started 18 of Minnesota's 21 games during the pandemic-shortened season and tallied one goal and six assists en route to another fourth-place finish in the West. In addition to leading Minnesota to the Semifinals of the MLS is Back Tournament , Gregus also provided one assist and played every minute during Minnesota's postseason run to the Western Conference Final. Gregus then made nine starts in 15 total appearances in 2021 to help Minnesota reach the playoffs as the No. 5 seed.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Announces
Run Groups to Celebrate 24 Hours of Le Mans

Few other events in the world sees this kind of tight action with historic race cars.

MONTEREY, Calif., Jan. 3, 2022 – Each year the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion celebrates the greatest achievements in motorsport by accepting only the best of the best historic race cars to compete like they once did. Come Wednesday, Aug. 17 through Saturday, Aug. 20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, four of the groups will pay tribute to the most famous race in the world: the 24 Hours of Le Mans to kick-off its yearlong centenary celebration.

These featured groups will span the full century of Le Mans, from 1923 sports cars through 2005 prototypes. The Le Mans grids will be dedicated to authentic, period-correct cars that have participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans or were eligible to compete in period.

There are 170 different makes eligible, ranging from Abarth and Alfa Romeo to Talbot and Triumph, in addition to Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Toyota.

The 2022 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion groups are: 1923-1955 Le Mans, 1956-1971 Le Mans, 1972-1982 Le Mans, Le Mans Prototypes (1981-2005), 1966-1972 Historic Trans-Am, 1966-1985 Historic Formula One, 1958-1963 Formula Junior, 1955-1969 Saloon,
1955-1966 SCCA Sports Cars, 1981-1991 IMSA GTO, Trans Am, 1974-1979 Formula Atlantic
1920-1955 Grand Prix

To fully celebrate the rich history of Le Mans, the Rolex Reunion will curate the largest exhibition of winning or historically significant Le Mans cars ever assembled for display and exhibition laps. These cars are currently in private collections or museums and no longer driven in competition, yet they represent the best of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. Featured in a massive structure, the story of Le Mans will emerge through video, period images and storyboards to entertain and educate visitors.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will also feature the ever-popular pre-1920 era cars, collectively known as the Ragtime Racers, which has become a staple of the week’s activities. The Ragtime Racers will not be a static display of antique race cars, which in 2021 was the largest single gathering of pre-1920 racers ever assembled in Monterey. Owners and riding mechanics wear the racing gear of the day, fire up their cars’ engines and will participate in daily race exhibitions to show fans these antiques and original racers are not for show, but can still come alive in the hills of Laguna Seca.

Members of the Monterey Motorsports Reunion Advisory Council will be scrutinizing each entry, which opens to entrants this week, to determine eligibility based on the car’s provenance, mechanical-and period-correctness, and its authenticity.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is one of the founding cornerstones of Monterey Car Week, having begun in 1974 as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. Every year the most significant historic and authentic race cars, and the legendary drivers who drove them to victory, attend to celebrate the shared passion for motorsports with tens of thousands of guests.

But the event is not just for motorheads. Families of all ages enjoy the experience from the go-karts and Ferris wheel to sampling the fine wines and craft beers of Monterey County. Daily tickets to full VIP experience packages and camping in the beautiful and convenient Laguna Seca Recreation Area campground are on sale now at WeatherTechRaceway.com or by calling the tickets and accommodation specialists at 831-242-8200.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
