NBA Playoffs: Ant Man Is The Man

The NBA playoffs have been whittled down. Of the games the Warriors had with playoff teams, the T-Wolves and OKC were the most impressive. OKC is gone, as are the Knicks and Cleveland, which leaves the Celtics and Pacers in the East. Minnesota defeated Denver (in Denver!), and will defeat Dallas in the West. Antman and his posse can handle either of the East teams they meet in the Finals.

I'm rollin' with Minnesota.

This YouTube clip shows Ant Man's destruction of Dallas (3:16). Perhaps the greatest movie ever made. Perhaps the most accurate coverage of Dallas in Wednesday's game with Ant Man.

Mavericks, get ready to meet Ant Man, with Matt Dillon and the F.B.I.

A Source of Great Pleasure

Grandkids

Thrill Us

From Afar

by Dave Newhouse

The situation in our household isn’t unlike that of grandparents anywhere, trying to stay connected to our grandchildren who live outside California, therefore limiting visits either there or here.

That’s partly because as grandparents, my wife and I are in our mid-80s, which makes travel unlikely because of our medical conditions -- nothing grievous, just preventative. And so we do the best we can as octogenarians, waiting for a phone call or an email with the latest news about our beloved grandchildren.

Fortunately our wonderful son provides both options by calling us long distance on a nearly daily basis, while also sending us frequent video of them, therefore we feel grateful in that regard. Both the father and mother are working, but they provide loving care for their children, who are doing well in school and equally well in athletics and are just good kids all around.

Our grandson, Callan is 13, and our granddaughter, Campbell, is 10. Both have shown a flair for excelling in sports, regardless of whichever sport they’re playing. I’m not saying they are naturals, but who can say, really, at their ages?

All I know is that Callan, who wants to be a quarterback, can throw a football accurately 45 yards. He also loves basketball, and already has a shooting touch, but gets more enjoyment as a shutdown defender. And when it comes to baseball, speaking of naturals or The Natural, he has that Roy Hobbs potential, if grandpa isn’t getting too excited too early.

Just the other day, he went 3-for-3 at the plate, plus from his catching position he threw out a baserunner at third and made a sprinting catch of a foul popup. He doesn’t always catch as he's mostly in centerfield, where he shows speed and a strong arm.

But the most amazing thing about Callan on the baseball diamond is his bat control. He rarely strikes out, the sign of a good hitter, and when he makes contact, look out! He isn’t the biggest kid, but when he connects, the ball takes off. He had two inside the park home runs in one game! He hasn’t homered yet over the fence — his dream goal — but he’s one-hopped the fence several times.

Cal Newhouse continues to rake and bring smiles to his grandfather

It is my belief that Callan can be a two-sport athlete in high school, with basketball the third option, though I wouldn’t want to sell him short. Did Roy Hobbs play three sports as a youth? Though my wife and I may never again see him play in person, we’ll root for him vicariously, perhaps as a major-leaguer. He has that early potential.

Granddaughter Campbell has displayed a deadly shot in basketball and a super smooth swing in the batter’s box. She is aggressive in whatever she does, with a very positive personality. Grandpa thinks she could become governor one day or even President, after becoming an All-American in some sport.

Those phone calls from our grandchildren are a blessing. They don’t even mind talking to us, thus the calls last up to an hour. Callan takes great delight in trying to stump me on sports knowledge. Stumped or otherwise, their calls make our day, week, month.

Our son’s job takes him across the country, but even though busy, he still finds the time to coach his children when needed. And since he played college baseball, he has sage advice to offer. He’s just a great dad all the way around.

There’s so much more I can say about our grandchildren, but — ooops! -- I got to go. The phone is ringing, and it could be them….

Jim Otto

January 5, 1938 – May 19, 2024

Raider legend Jim Otto, 00, died Sunday at the age of 86. He was 86 years old. Nicknamed Mr. Raider, the Original Raider, he was an iron horse who played in 210 consecutive games. He epitomized the Raiders of the 1960s and 1970s and was beloved by all. A player who let his on field actions speak for him, he sacrificed his body many times and was selected to the NFL’s 100th Anniversary team in 2019. In 1980 in his first year of eligibility, Otto was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was a presence with the Raiders way beyond his playing years and is undoubtedly the most beloved Raider in NFL History. Otto is survived by his wife Sally, his son Jim Jr. and

Late goal for visitors the difference at PayPal Park;

San Jose faces Sacramento Republic FC on Tuesday in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell 1-0 to Orlando City SC on Saturday night at PayPal Park in front of 14,127 fans.

After a first half where San Jose dominated possession and took seven attempts, the second stanza was more even, as the visitors asserted themselves in the attacking third. Though the Quakes would come close to the breakthrough several times, Orlando City struck late in the 89th minute via a Jack Lynn goal for the final margin.

The Quakes will now prepare for a road match with Sacramento Republic FC on Tuesday, May 21, in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. Kickoff from Heart Health Park is set for 7 p.m. PT and will be streamed on USOpenCup.com, MLSsoccer.com and USLsoccer.com.

The Golden State WNBA Valkyries

by Howard Pearlstein

It’s a bold choice for a team name, powerful and dark. They’re the part of Norse and Germanic mythological history integrally connected to the fields of battle, battles done face to face with axes and swords and clubs. Nothing left but blood and pieces. The writers of the Edda (in which the stories were first recorded) put it this way: “When the battle’s over, it’s the ravens’ turn.”

The Valkyrie guided those who died with honor to Valhalla. The ravens feasted on the parts left behind. Some stories say the Valkyrie were the ones who decided before the battle who would live and who would die.

And some of the stories say they WERE the ravens. Those birds are scary smart. Guessing from the animated clip they used to introduce and explain their logo, perhaps the Golden State Valkyries favor that particular story, since the three silhouetted women have large raven’s wings they fold in to become part of the graphic design of the logo.

Their story has been told over the past thousand years, from Denmark to Sweden to Germany. They have been confused with angels and demons and more, called by whatever name the prevailing belief of the time and place called supernatural beings. There are a lot of variations, but they all have the same thing in common: they are beautiful and they are terrifying.

The Germanic poet Ranier Maria Rilke (Bohemian-Austrian – close enough) acceded to the Christian society and called them angels. He wrote about those ‘angels.'

And the way he came to that was another ooo-eee-ooo part of the story.

He was a guest of the Princess Marie at Duino Castle. And as he walked along the windy cliffs above the Gulf of Trieste one day, he heard a voice in the wind calling to him in German, which, when translated for non-linguists like me, said:

“Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the hierarchies of angels?”

(Hey, we’re talking about supernatural beings here, so why not?)

And those first words of his ten elegies went on to fear the beauty of the angels.

“For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us.”

Every angel is terrifying. As is every Valkyrie.

I remember doing an interview with Ann Calvello, Roller Derby Queen and pretty much a Valkyrie herself. It was almost 50 years ago, and I remember it clearly. We talked a bit before the game, and as we talked, I saw a new roller on the team – a tall dark-haired woman who was just jaw-droppingly beautiful. My friend became totally embarrassing, nerding out shamefully until the game started. And beauty being terror we’re just barely able to stand?

When she took off her helmet, swinging it as a weapon in a fight, she was roaring, her beautiful face barely recognizable as human. That may not have been what Rilke meant, but close enough.

I guess there’s a joke somewhere in how the Valkyries taking the fallen heroes up to Valhalla are “women still picking up the mess the men made.” I advise against making that joke near the team or the fans.

And as to the Ride of the Valkyries played in Apocalypse Now allowing Robert Duvall to say: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

There are a lot of rude ways to parody that. Don’t do that either.

My guess is that those women all know exactly how Valkyries would answer those wisecracks.

Vol. 80: It's Silly Season For Anonymous Leaks Of NCAA Settlement Discussions

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

by Darren Heitner

Founder of HEITNERLEGAL

I guess I have to keep talking about this potential settlement that is allegedly reaching the finish line, since "sources" keep wanting to leak information to the media and the media keeps running with it hook, line, and sinker.

On May 14, 2024, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports wrote that he obtained documents (which the public doesn't have access to) that show officials from the NCAA and power conferences could be dealing with a $20 billion judgment and a potential bankruptcy filing if they reject a settlement offer.

It sounds like a plaintiff lawyer's wet dream.

I'm not sure how what was once a threat of roughly $4 billion in an adverse judgment in House v. NCAA ballooned, overnight, to $20 billion, but whatever narrative works for the NCAA opening its wallet, I suppose. My colleague, Michael McCann also showed some skepticism.

"I'm not sure where, how or when $4 billion morphed into $20 billion. I bet it goes to $50 billion in the next week or two," wrote McCann. "These numbers make so many assumptions (most of which are not transparent, either) and there's so little critique of them in media."

What has become clear is the amount of back damages that will be owed under a draft settlement agreement that is being circulated -- $2.776 billion -- a far cry from $20 billion.

The document, which most people haven't seen, allegedly hits on how a settlement will protect the NCAA from lawsuits related to future policy decisions (it won't), Title IX implications, and the possibility of regulating NIL collectives.

But my favorite part about the supposed new structure of this settlement agreement that is being negotiated through media members who are rushing to print what they hear as quickly as possible either without asking important questions or agreeing to write without answers is that the deal is intended to accomplish the following:

Earthquakes 2, Portland Timbers 4

San Jose’s two-goal lead disappears after second-half red card reduces Quakes to 10 men

PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Portland Timbers 4-2 on Wednesday night in front of 19,113 fans at Providence Park, snapping their four-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Amahl Pellegrino opened the scoring for San Jose in the 31st minute with a header off a rebound from a Cristian Espinoza corner kick to score his fourth goal of the season and third in as many games. Just three minutes later, Hernán López picked Larrys Mabiala’s pocket near midfield and chipped Portland goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau from long range to double the Quakes’ advantage.

Early in the second half, López almost made it a brace when he curled an attempt from well behind the box that just bounced off the crossbar. However, in the 72nd minute, the entire complexion of the game changed when Quakes defender Bruno Wilson was called for a hand ball after preventing a shot from crossing the goal line. After a video review, he was shown a red card. Evander converted the subsequent penalty kick and the Timbers cut the lead in half.

Roots Stun Orange County SC,

Win 2-1 at Home in Added Time

With just seconds remaining in added time of the second half, Roots scored a miracle goal to earn all three points in their contest versus Orange County SC by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday night in the East Bay.

Both sides started the contest looking strong, with Oakland and Orange County both earning quality scoring chances including a three-on-two attacking advantage for the Roots in the 15th minute of the match which was cleaned up well by OC.

Orange County opened the scoring in the 21st minute when a cross into the box from the left side courtesy of OC defender Ryan Doghman found a leaping Thomas Amang who put a quality header into the back of the net to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

Roots would counter only a short time later, after a hard foul in the Orange County penalty area earned Oakland a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Trayvone Reid made no mistake from the spot, firing the ball towards the right side and past the outstretched hands of the Orange County keeper to level the match at 1-1.

Both teams continued to trade scoring opportunities with Roots earning the lion's share of them, but despite the attacking pressure it seemed that the match was headed towards a 1-1 draw as the game entered extra time.

Ferrari Racing Days Rolls into Monterey

for an all-Ferrari Motorsports Festival

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Welcomes Visitors for Third Consecutive Weekend

of Activities

MONTEREY, Calif., May 16, 2024—The hillsides of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca take on a decidedly Italian flair this weekend as one of the most famous luxury brands in the world brings its storied history and automobiles to Monterey for Ferrari Racing Days. The three-day gathering of racing and road cars begins ticketed entry Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19.

The histories of Ferrari and Laguna Seca have been intertwined since 1957. The first of many memorable moments came at the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Race at the “new” Laguna Seca. It was here that Pete Lovely, driving a Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa, upset the star-studded field to win and forever cementing Ferrari’s place in Monterey history.

“The Laguna Seca Recreation Area has shifted from Trans Am muscle cars, to ultra-advance IMSA prototypes and sports cars to the Prancing Horses of an all Ferrari gathering in three weeks’ time,” commented John Narigi, president of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “These three events are providing a significant boost to Monterey County’s local businesses with a steady influx of visitors during a traditionally slow visitation month.”

Gaels Win Rugby National Championship

In an epic battle in Houston,

Saint Mary’s defeats Navy 26–22 to bring

home the Division 1A Trophy.

by Steven Boyd Saum, Office of Marketing & Communications

Meet the new national champions in men’s rugby: the Saint Mary’s Gaels. SMC Men’s Rugby surged out to an early lead and held tough to the end to defeat Navy 26–22 to win the Men’s Rugby Division 1A National Championship in Houston on Saturday evening.

It was an epic contest at Sabercats Stadium that pitted two rugby powerhouses in this combat sport. The Gaels displayed their signature expansive and unpredictable style of play, capping what has been a stellar season.

Saint Mary’s showed their attacking prowess before even two minutes had elapsed in the match. A successful try by Dominic Besag ’26 and a conversion by Mario Storti ’25 made it 7–0 Gaels.

Not three minutes later, the Gaels struck again. Navy defenders zeroed in on Besag, who tossed a pass to Erich Storti ’23, MBA ’24, who carried the ball across the line. A conversion by younger brother Mario Storti put SMC up 14–0. It looked as if a rout might be in the cards.

No. 4 Bears Finish Second At Pac-12 Championships

Bears’ Best Finish Since 2018

FOLSOM, Calif. – The No. 4 California women's rowing team sat in third place behind Stanford and Washington but still had an opportunity to win the Pac-12 title heading into the final race between the varsity eights at the Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma on Sunday afternoon. The V8+ ended up finishing second which gave the Golden Bears enough points (36) to jump into second place in the final standings – their best finish since coming in second at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships.

In the first race of the day between the novice eights, Cal got out with the lead pack and was even with Washington but behind Stanford by a half-boat over the first 500 meters. With the Cardinal building an open-water lead over the field by the halfway mark, it was a battle for second between the Bears and Huskies. Cal was able to take a three-seat lead over Washington in the third 500 meters. The Bears were able to extend their lead by about two seats over the Huskies in the closing 500 meters to take second place in a time of 06:46.750.

St. Francis Yacht Club

The History of St. Francis Yacht Club

Becoming St. Francis

There is a tide that flows through the Golden Gate. There is a tide in the affairs of men.

In 1927, San Francisco Bay sailors crossed both in a single tack. The Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 had reimagined the waterfront to the east of the Army’s Presidio, and one of the developments was a harbor. After the fair, the harbor remained. With that, it became possible to imagine placing a yacht club on the San Francisco city front, and there were visionaries with that in mind. They believed the city was “the” place for a great yacht club on San Francisco Bay.

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods." By Charlie Silvera with Dave Newhouse (Author).

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and

Spanish versions, too!
