Letters to the Editor
NEW NBA "Longshot" Tournament
In Sports Today's "30-1 Longshot, non-profit Final Four Tournament",
only teams which were at 30-1 odds or longer when selected were eligible to win the prize: promotion for their favorite non-profit.
In fact, the Final Four teams WERE ALL 30-1 shots: San Diego State, Florida Atlantic, U. Conn and Miami. Professional bracketologists and the usual blowhards were shamed as they promoted Alabama, Houston and other #1 and #2 seeds, while Sports Today readers had 3 of the 4 selected for the Finals. The Lesson? Odds no longer matter. Pick who YOU think will make the NBA Finals. (I'll stick with the Warriors to win it all, of course).
But just for fun, I'll add Knicks v. T-Wolves. Obi Toppin, your time has arrived!
Winners will receive free Sports Today promo. Email your picks to: theultimatesportsguide@gmail.com
The wilder your choice may seem, as the Final Four proved, "All bets are off" and ANY team can make it!

Dave Newhouse Brings His World Together
| |
There’s an expectancy in launching a book that never loses its anticipation or appreciation for an author, the realization that the writing process finally has come to an end, and the satisfaction that people actually have turned out for your first book talk.
For Andy Dolich and myself, that moment arrived last Tuesday, April 11 at Books, Inc. in Alameda, where we stood before a large gathering to discuss our collaboration, Goodbye, Oakland, on the very day that it was officially published.
But, for me, there was further fulfillment because as I gazed at the audience, I saw something different from previous book talks — my son and two grandchildren. And at my advanced writing age, 84 & 1/2, they got in just under the wire.
It was pure happenstance, the three of them being there. For this book talk was scheduled long before they decided to travel from Washington state, where they live, to visit grandpa and grandma in Oakland. I must admit their trip down made the evening more emotional.
An author is touched whenever there is a full house and sold out books, both coming in the same evening, which occurred for Andy and I in Alameda. But having family present was a life-rewarding experience for myself, the finishing touches on a professional and personal journey.
Our son, Casey, 50, said goodbye, Oakland long ago to attend Washington State University and then take up residence in apple land, building a successful career in medical sales, and becoming a loving father to son Callan, 12, and daughter Campbell, 9.
And there they were, Callan seated next to my wife, Patsy, and Campbell sitting on the floor between book stacks, with papa Casey standing by her side.
| |
Patsy and Dave Newhouse. Photo by Ann Cooke.
And there I was, trying unsuccessfully to hold onto my emotions while pitching our book about Oakland's possibly losing all three of its sports teams, a unique distinction it would prefer not to achieve.
The book itself took the two of us 30 months to complete, compiling nearly 80 interviews in the process, in order to present a complete perspective of this civic tragedy. Thus local sports heroes were interviewed along with those who added political, economic, legal and racial viewpoints. Congresswoman Barbara Lee wrote the book’s foreword. And the craziest triumvirate of sports owners anywhere — Al Davis, Charles O. Finley, Franklin Mieuli — were stripped bare.
The publisher is Triumph Books, and it was a triumphant night in Alameda for the two authors, only one of which was able to harness his emotions. Patsy and I have been married for 58 years, and when it came time to introduce her, I couldn’t get the words out.
The same blockage occurred when I tried to introduce our son and two grandchildren. Something caught in my throat each time, and I had my tonsils removed long ago. Maybe something I ate beforehand?
And I know I’m biased, but Goodbye, Oakland is the definitive book on Oaktown’s roller-coaster sports history. That, in itself, is enough to bring tears.

Why I Wasn’t Worried
(about the Dubs)
by Howard Pearlstein
Strange as it may seem, it was because I had a fire in my home in late October of 2019. Ultimately the water collapsed some of the plaster ceiling, dropping a lot of asbestos in the living area.
After 9-10 months, I moved back in and Restoration, Inc. returned the things they’d cleaned and saved – 400 large boxes filling an empty room, floor-to-ceiling, door-to-door. Many of the boxes filled with books.
First time around – open boxes, put things away wherever, the time-honored homeowner’s system of, “I’ll just put these here for now.”
And after that, the long period of what goes where and when.
Which takes us to the Dubs’ post-championship situation, new players coming in to replace the ones who left, previous year rookies coming into their game. And coach Kerr trying to figure out, “where do I put them?”
Not quite, “Where do I put all the books?” But still, similar, except finding the right place for a human being with specific talents and limits with others similarly talented is a whole lot more complex than finding a shelf for a book. Especially in a system of continual motion. “Controlled chaos,” as Jordan Poole called it. The Dance is what
I call it.
But still, as it went along, the question:
“What/who do I have to move from THERE to get the new ones moved from HERE to THERE?”
My point: I learned the way it goes when fixing things is this: It always looks worse while you’re fixing it than it looked before, when it was a mess.
And the process was taking time and sports writers were saying the Dubs were done, or free-falling.
But something was going on -- to quote Albert Einstein when asked what he had learned about the universe, he said, “Something’s moving.” My confidence in the Dubs was emboldened by my months-long experience in learning the way things need to fall apart in order to come together.
And I understood that it was all about the process of the new guys learning to play with Steph and Klay and Draymond and each other, taking shots, moving without the ball, learning each others’ instincts.
And, another thing I learned back in my home clutter, when I needed something and knew I had it but – it was somewhere, the best advice I got about that was good for any time:
“When you’re looking for something you can’t find, after the search, DON’T put it back there, put it where you first looked, because that’s where it belongs.”
And I could see the offensive players who get better and better at defense. And players brought in for defense, like Jonathan Kuminga, becoming an offensive threat. Donte DiVincenzo, too.
Bit by bit, ebb and flow, the team had flashes of great, flashes of chaos, flashes of the stupid fumbles. But shifting through the season to fewer lost balls, fewer unforced turnovers, more control of the chaos, and more bits and pieces of greatness. It was all moving along in an organically developing dynamic.
And as the season ended, all the pieces were together. Didn’t matter that the last two games were against teams that pulled their starters, because the dance was working. So why worry? It was happening.
And again, knowing they CAN do it isn’t the same as they WILL, but maybe gets more likely.
This is Friday, first playoff game tomorrow against a very good Kings team.
By the time you read this, you’ll know how likely MAYBE is.
* * *
Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Muhammad Ali -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee | |
This is my favorite sports autograph. In 1996 I went to a sports collectors show at the San Francisco Cow Palace to see which local team athletes were there. I wasn’t expecting to see Muhammad Ali there but he was. I remember looking at his price list for autographs and it was rather high compared to the others in attendance.
I thought about it for the longest time but finally gave in and got into his line. The cost for the glove and for him to sign it was about $75.
I walked up to him, and he didn’t speak much but he was very expressive with his smile, stare and nods. After he signed my glove,
I handed my manual film camera to someone there to take our photo which he didn’t charge for. We took several photos together and for the last one, Muhammad took my fist and put it on his chin and then put his fist on my chin for what would have been an awesome photo but the camera ran out of film and we didn’t get it.
Meeting the champ was a once in a lifetime opportunity which I’ll never forget. The $75 I spent that day turned out to be a great investment as his signed gloves now sell for up to $2500+.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
