Career Day

Are your kids just a little too manic -- as in they have one

marathon pillow fight after another? Well, fear not. This may just

be the start of a career move into the world of sports.

I present, for your consideration, the Pillow Fighting World Championships, recently showcased on ESPN and now a global phenomenon, with PFC Leagues sponsored in Brazil and Ghana.

Channel your children's energy and, before you know it, you may just hear: "Let's get Ready to Rummmmble! Let the combatants present their Feathered weapons."

So, go at it kids! "The pillows are firm and the sheets are snug."

49er Consistency

Say what you want about San Francisco's performance today against

the Raiders, it was consistent in all aspects of the game. Ineffective on

run and pass offense and with a porous offensive line, paper-thin D-Line and generous pass defense, the Niners were consistently poor in all aspects of the contest. Oh yes, that high-draft place kicker who shanked his first field goal attempt.

In your recent survey of who would be the starter at quarterback, nobody picked Brandon Allen, #4 on the hit parade. He is my pick as he showed some gusto, accuracy and poise.

If there's a bright side to this debacle, it's that the team can only improve.

Pac-4 Conference

The premier tri-state West Coast college football conference. Founded in 1915 in Portland, the Pac-4 features fierce rivalries, proud tradition, and an easy travel schedule. (One of many possibilities…)

Pac-12 Implosion and Memories

by Dave Newhouse

The Pacific-12 Conference, with its multiple name changes, has impacted my life, from when I was a neophyte sports zealot as a kid to the increasingly skeptical old man I am now, sadly tossing flowers on the conference’s grave.

It was the Pacific Coast Conference in the late 1940s, when I, age 11, pedaled from my parents’ home in Menlo Park to Stanford, where kids under 12 got in free to watch Stanford play football. I left my bike inside the hedge circling the stadium fence. After the game, if Stanford won, I’d walk down to the track to be near the then Stanford Indians. I remember shaking hands with Rupe Andrews, while fellow halfback Bob White asked me my name and patted me on the head. Wow!

I had my bike stolen that day because I didn’t have a padlock, which infuriated my parents no end. But I was building a romance with sports that would last a lifetime, the kind of budding relationship that doesn’t exist for today’s 11-year-olds.

A few years later, I pedaled another bike to then Menlo Junior College where the San Francisco 49ers, the Bay Area’s only major-league team, held their summer camp. A cameraman asked me to throw a pass to end Gordy Soltau for a stock photo shot. As Soltau cut in front of me, I threw a wobbly ball that he somehow snared, a completion which appeared in local newspapers, though not the “quarterback,” who was 1-for-1 regardless That time, I rode home on the same bike.

The PCC became the AAWU, Pac-8, Pac-10, and Pac-12, before dissolving into the Pac-4 and, likely, the Pac-0 before this travesty concludes. A lifetime of involvement for myself just went down the sewer. The winningest conference in the nation by far, and — poof! — it’s gone.

But just think of its history, commencing in 1916. Cal’s Wonder Team of 1920, which beat Ohio State 28-0 in the Rose Bowl, was voted the best college football team of the first half century. Ernie Nevers, Stanford’s greatest athlete, was named fullback on the national collegiate backfield over the same time period.

Then came Cal’s Thunder Team, Stanford’s Vow Boys and Wow Boys, USC’s Thundering Herd, and that’s just football. The Pac-12, across the board, has dominated the college scene. The Director’s Cup, symbolizing collegiate supremacy since 1994, has been won by the Stanford every year with three exceptions. Take that, SEC! You as well ACC! You, too Big-10!

Ooops! The Big-10 just sacked the Pac-12, taking USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington. Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah then took flight to the Big 12, leaving behind Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, four schools perhaps without a conference home after the 2023-24 school year.

No other conference wants them so far, with the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and ACC nixing any possibility. Well, that’s understandable, as Cal’s and Stanford’s high academic standards make them unattractive with those four conferences.

Rupe Andrews, No. 73, as a star end of the Calgary Stampeders

in 1954.

None of us knows how any of this will shake out, including the Pac-12’s abandoned four. But I have a crystal ball idea that clearly has no chance of being implemented, yet would make perfect sense: A "West Coast Live’ football conference of Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington State, San Jose State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Nevada. Think of the potential upsets, like when San Jose State used to knock off Cal and Stanford, rivalries killed off by the latter two.

The West Coast Live idea makes perfect sense from a fan standpoint, just like another idea I have: A "Hoops Holiday,” a Christmas basketball tournament involving Cal, Stanford, USF, St. Mary’s, Santa Clara, San Jose State, UOP, and San Francisco State. What Bay Area bragging rights that would entail, but local schools, stupidly, see more significance in playing UC Merced, Cal Baptist, Southern Utah, etcetera. Boring, boring, and more boring.

Let’s not forget that the PCC started out in football by including Idaho and Nevada as members. So anything is possible, and the way collegiate sports are both expanding and imploding at the same time, my ideas make more sense. But I’m too old to become a college commissioner.

I’m reminded of a conversation I had with the very same Rupe Andrews as a senior citizen. I asked him if he wore number 11 at Stanford. There was a long pause before he said, “You just made my day.”

Well, the Pac-12 just ruined my day. Better yet, my life.

Pac-12 Reinvented

Andy

Pac-12, What's Next?

by Andy Dolich

The Roman poet, Juvenal, coined the message “Mens sana in corpore sano” 1,900 years ago. It translates to “Sound Mind, Sound Body.” The term is often used to describe scholarship athletes in collegiate sports as “Student-Athletes.”

The Pacific-12, the Conference of Champions, began playing sports in 1916, amassing 553 NCAA men’s and women’s titles and hundreds of Olympic medal winners, many of them gold.

The shock waves of USC and UCLA moving to the Big Ten was soon followed by Oregon, Washington. Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State now headed to the Big 12. We’ll be left with the Pac-4.

Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State would then remain in the biggest conference upheaval college athletics history. There’s a possibility that only three or four major conferences will survive this blatant money game, where football pays the freight for the other sports.

Now that NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) is sweeping the country as quick as a Barbie Movie date, the nano-second attention spans of college presidents, trustees, athletic directors, coaches, boosters, high school All-Americans, their families, agents and crypto promoters might wreck college athletics in search of Gordon Gekko’s DNA, “Greed is Good!”

As we know, the color of the fluid that flows through the revenue engines of all sports, including collegiate athletics, is green.

Campuses of higher education from coast-to-coast are scrambling to have an open and honest discussion within their communities as to whether they want to be institutions of higher learning or repositories of higher earnings.

There are many knee jerk solutions as to what should happen next for Stanford and Cal. My concept would feature the top academic schools that play competitive D-1 Sports supported by the most significantly deep-pocketed corporate entities in the country. Many of these companies’ decision makers are men and women who have graduated from institutions of higher learning.

It is time to create the SAC -- Student Athlete Conference: Stanford, Cal, Duke, Notre Dame, Harvard, Virginia, Northwestern, Vanderbilt

Isn't it critically important that Juvenal’s brilliance of "Sound Mind, Sound Body" doesn’t disappear forever at colleges and universities, on behalf of their talented men and women on playing fields and classrooms from coast-to- coast?

The Straw

by Robert Moselle, Esq.

https://www.cce-mcle.com/aboutus

In light of their countless injuries, the constant rotation of players to

and from the minor leagues, and more lineups than a Law & Order telethon, the G-Men's season thus far could be called successful as they are in the hunt for a post-season playoff spot.

A variety of players have helped keep the team in the race when others have struggled.

But who is "The straw who stirs the drink?," a phrase the Free Dictionary states is usually attributed to Reggie Jackson? This is not a data-driven selection. Rather, it is based on impressions from numerous games watched as the season has roller-coasted along.

First, here is a summary review of some of the potential nominees. Michael Conforto: his batting average has generally ranged between .240 and .260. When he's in that .240 range, the team also falls below par. The uptick in spirit and wins when he moves up to the .260 mark is dramatic (as demonstrated in Sunday's 3-2 win over Texas).

Thairo Estrada: too long on the injured list to be considered; Patrick Bailey: an extremely worthy candidate with his incredible defense and clutch hits (again, witness his extra-inning game-winner over Texas on Sunday). Wilmer Flores: where would the Giants be without Wilmer: he's been on a long tear of power.

Regrettably, others have not followed his lead in the games where Wilmer has been the lone contributor and the result has been a long stretch of one-run or other low-scoring games. J.D. Davis: his monster home runs have been difference-makers but have been the lone offense weapon in many games of late. LaMonte Wade: started out super-hot, but, for now, has been a little less effective in his on-base percentages. Still a weapon, though. Joc? Big Joc fan here, but his appearances are all too few.

So, who is The Straw? The last time the fans went wild, and the entire G-Men squad went ballistic was when Mike Yastrzemski launched his moon shot into McCovey Cove. Not only did the crowd go wild, but every player joined in the party. And the Giants went on a streak!

Statistically, his numbers may not be great, but sometimes a certain undefined emotional charge can be of greater value. Since he went on IL, the team has been fortunate to stay in the hunt as one-run games have become the norm and the usual Oracle excitement waned. This demonstrates his inherent value.

So, who is "The Straw?" All together now: give me a Y, an A and a Z. YAZ! Let's get ready for The Straw to Stir the Drink!

Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy celebrated his

95th birthday this past week.

According to this list of Oldest Living Basketball Players Cousy is the second oldest NBA retiree. (John Barber, a 96-year-old, played only five games for the St Louis Hawks and will be noted in the answer.)

A two-pointed question about Bob Cousy:

(1) Local favorite Bob Cousy was shunned by Red Auerbach on the very first pick in the very first NBA draft, saying, "Am I supposed to win, or please the local yokels?"  What team drafted Bob Cousy?

(2) The NBA team that drafted Cousy couldn't work it out. What NBA team did Bob Cousy first play with? (Three prior drafts for basketball were held under the BAA title, the Basketball Association of America.)

Answer below.

Sports Precis

After the Knockout Game –

Mirable Dictu?

More like Mirable F—You

by Howard Pearlstein

This was what used to be call jive-ass – cheap tricks and forced outcomes. In other words, a sports championship run by people who don’t understand that sports are something athletes do. I’ll explain, but first:

I’m not saying it was intentionally against the USA, even though the smart money was betting against the USWNT doing a Three-peat. And FIFA and Smart Money seem to know each other. No, but it was the kind of chickenshit that makes athletes squirm and lose respect for the money behind the games.

Rose Lavelle was yellow-carded for two fouls, of which one even caused an announcer to hold her tongue as she began to say there was no foul there, a no-no for that job. Double Yellow meant a next-match ban and kept her off the field for the first Knockout game, putting the US Women one critical Mid-fielder down.

Lavelle was one of the top players in the world, named one of the 11 Best Players in the world by The Best FIFA Football Awards in 2019, and one of the world's top three midfielders by her professional peers in the 2019 FIFA FIFPro World XI

I’m not claiming a bias against the US team --- USWNT wasn’t the only team that had a top player Double-Yellowed in last round before the Knockouts, and there was also the question of, “Was that actually a foul?” going on.

Nonetheless.

Then USWNT played Sweden to a tie all the way to the Penalty Kicks, and the PKs were still tied when the last PK took place and was obviously blocked by USWNT Goalie Alyssa Naeher. After which, the ball bounced and came back toward her. And she stopped it again.

But wait, maybe she didn’t. And they did a quick review and said “Nope, it was a goal. It rolled back a millimeter into the line.”

And that was that. A millimeter!? And I put it, possibly unfairly-- seems to me to be the kind of decision that gets made when a largely-considered corrupt corporate organization has it claws into a particular sport, and thinks the game has gone on long enough.

Because no athlete who ever went through a grueling lifetime of training, competing, winning, losing – gone through all that and gets to that point, none of them would decide anything but, damnit – play another set of Penalty Kicks.

The longest game in FBS history – Penn State vs Illinois in October of 2021 – Nine overtime periods until Illinois won with a two-point conversion pass. That is when the blood and sweat of the athletes are allowed to decide the winner.

Ah well.

Also with NFL preseason starting, I’ll add something that I wrote here two years ago, in the August 15 edition. (Bit of an immodest pat on my own back.)

It was preseason and this new guy looked good -- really good, even though it was only a few plays in garbage time. His name was Brock Purdy and he had something that reminded me of Joe Montana -- a stillness in the pocket -- a stillness and awareness in the midst of chaos, like the Hokusai wave.

I mean that's not all of what Joe had, but it’s something remarkable, something we rarely see. Don’t know what else Purdy has, but four years starting QB at Iowa State, Big 12 Football playing with and against players he’ll meet in the NFL. He may be ready.

Just a tiny bit of deja vu watching Brock Purdy in the pocket Friday evening.

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Bob Cousy, The Houdini of the Hardwood,

went on to become one of the best players in NBA history. As a testament to Cousy's legacy, President John F. Kennedy wired to Cousy when he was retiring: "The game bears the indelible stamp of your rare skills and competitive daring, and it will serve as a living reminder of your long and illustrious career so long as it is played." https://bit.ly/3YuRlsm

The game of Basketball would not be what it is if not for folks like Cousy. Beyond being a Celtic, he was also very much an activist. If only all of us could be as sharp at 95. https://bit.ly/3OxpmDR

Both the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and Chicago Stags tried to sign Cousy as his first professional team but failed

As promised, a note on 96-year-old John Barber.

Barber is one of 36 American basketball players to ever score 100 or more points in a basketball game, and he is the only one to do it three times. Barber scored a career-high and NCAA record 188 points vs. Chapman College in 1953. He also scored 150 points in an exhibition game vs. the LA Scribes magazine team and 103 vs. Los Angeles Community College. https://bit.ly/47qPJ6X

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. "The Yankee Way," Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's foreword, is "full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competition, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods." By Charlie Silvera with Dave Newhouse (Author).

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and

Spanish versions, too!
