Duane Kuiper
San Francisco Giants Broadcaster
The outpouring of support has been overwhelming since Kuiper announced that he is undergoing chemotherapy. "I've received a lot of text messages, and the thing that's really interesting is I've received text messages from guys that I've never met on the team. Conner Menez texted me, I've never met Conner Menez. There are other people, as well, that I've never met due to COVID," Kuiper said. "It really has been heartwarming and it will continue to be like that until this thing is over with, and as far as I'm concerned that can't happen soon enough." By Alex Pavlovic. Here's your shot to snag two free tickets
to an A's game!

Beginning Monday, you can receive the COVID-19 vaccination at any remaining regular season home games this season at the Oakland Coliseum and we’ll give you a voucher for two tickets to either that day’s game or an upcoming game at the Coliseum.

The vaccination clinic, hosted by Clayworth Pharmacy, will open one and half hours before first pitch in the Eastside Club, and it will operate through the fifth inning. Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available. No appointment is needed.

Vaccines are free, and insurance is not required. Individuals 12 and older are eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine as a first or second dose. (Children under the age of 18 receiving the Pfizer vaccine must have consent from a parent or guardian.) Individuals 18 and older are eligible to receive either their first or second dose of the Pfizer vaccine or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. You can also return to the vaccination clinic for your second dose at a future game and you’ll receive a voucher for two more tickets to an A’s game.

A game ticket is not required to enter the vaccination clinic. You can access the Eastside Club via the BART Ramp.

Will Warriors deal Wiseman
to bring in more talent?

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
Just because the Golden State Warriors were eliminated prematurely by the Memphis Grizzles doesn’t mean they have to overhaul the team. They still have Stephen Curry, who at 33 is one of the best players in the world. But they could use another efficient point guard to help the team during those minutes that Curry is not on the court.

Curry is a Hall-of-Fame player but even Oscar winners need a supporting cast to make a movie worth the time and effort and hopefully a return on investment. James Wiseman is a young center still learning and with the potential of really helping this team that does need more help on rebounds.

Wiseman at 7′ 1″ could be trade bait. I like Wiseman and believe he is going to be one of the top centers in the NBA in several years. The Warriors said they are not going to trade Wiseman and they expect him to play with them next season. However, I am not too sure of that.

Especially because of his youth and enormous potential, James Wiseman is a player which many teams are attracted to and could bring high returns to the Warriors.

When it comes to rebounds, the Warriors are not one of the best teams in the league. The Warriors could be one-trade-away from returning as an elite team in the NBA. Will they pull the trigger? A big question today is: What is the trade value of Wiseman?

There is not much clarity on this: the Warriors organization will have to make that decision, to “trade or not to trade.” One thing for sure is that shooting guard Klay Thompson should come back next season and hopefully most of the troops (like power forward Draymond Green, who finished third for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year) will be healthy and ready to contend again for another NBA title. This could be a key off-season for the Golden State Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors were one of the few teams in the NBA to first broadcast in Spanish during the 1990s together with the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks.

Concacaf Nations League

The San Jose Earthquakes announced that PayPal Park will host a free event in which members of the local community can receive their COVID-19 vaccination. The event will run from 4-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, and will feature appearances from Oswaldo Alanis, Eduardo 'Chofis' Lopez, and Carlos Fierro.

The Quakes remained active through the international break. Midfielder Jackson Yueill represented the United States Men's National Team in the Concacaf Nations League Final Four, earning his 11th international cap and playing 83 minutes in a 1-0 semifinal victory over Honduras. The USMNT later defeated Mexico 3-2 in the Concacaf Nations League Final on Sunday night.

Defender Marcos Lopez remains on international duty with the Peru National Team. Lopez recorded his fifth international cap on Thursday, featuring as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat to Colombia as part of World Cup Qualifiers. Peru has one more match as part of World Cup qualifying (vs. Ecuador on June 8) before turning their attention to the Group Stage of Copa America 2021.

The Quakes are off for another week before traveling to Texas to feature in the first-ever MLS match at Q2 Stadium vs. Austin FC on Saturday, June 19. The match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on UniMás, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Author Arif Khatib (above left)
As a person who has traveled the world and chronicled his journey, and recently completed his memoirs for his family, Arif Khatib set out to create a book that would combine three of his passions: sports, history and social justice, while shining a much-needed light on the contributions of forgotten and unheard-of athletes of color. The Shadow of Obscurity: Toiling in a Reluctant Society realizes his vision.
Author Pete Elman (above right)
Pete Elman is a musician, journalist, author and teacher. Originally from Washington, D.C., he grew up loving rock and roll, sports and history. His father, a Justice Department lawyer who argued cases in the Supreme Court—most notably Brown vs. Board of Education—imbued in young Peter a strong sense of social justice.

Roots Unable to Get a Result in Orange County

Oakland was on the front foot for much of the game with over 60% of the possession. However, despite the pressure Roots were unable to pick up any points in Irvine, California vs Orange County SC. Despite good play in attack from Bokila, Mfeka and Enriquez, Oakland was unable to find the back of the net. After Roots dominated most of the first half Orange County scored the lone goal of the game against the run of play when Damus found the back of the net just before the half time whistle. From there, the host sat back and were able to protect their lead to capture the three points.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell on the first half play and how difficult it was to not get a first half goal with all the good play.
You want to be rewarded for those moments and we did really well to put ourselves in good positions and it came back to haunt us with the goal at the end of the first half, I think the good football is something to build on even if the result is not there.

What are the positives you can take back to Oakland and the home opener next week?
We have been conceding way more than a goal a game. To only concede one tonight though they had other opportunities and also showed we are dangerous. But today we showed we can be more solid defensively than we have been in the past 3 games. We know we can score, it's not that we are afraid of not being able to score. The past two games and tonight we created more than enough chances to score. I think that's good progress from pre-season and where we were even at the start of the season. But now we need to put the two together and defend well and put the ball in the back of the net as well.

Roots Defender Akeem Ward
A good performance that didn’t yield the result. What are the positives you can take away?
I think a big positive is that it wasn’t self-inflicted. The past games we have given teams goals, they haven’t earned them. This one was unfortunate, but we didn’t really shoot ourselves in the foot today. As a full performance I thought we dominated with the ball. Just couldn’t find the net.

Any message to the fans ahead of the home opener next week?
We are beyond excited. Jordan was beyond excited saying everywhere we've been, we have been to four different stadiums now, he said there is no atmosphere like there is in Oakland. I’m super excited to come home and we are going to give you all a show for sure.

Children’s Charities Raises
More Than $75,000 During NASCAR Week
to Help Local Children In Need

SONOMA, Calif. (June 10, 2021) -- The Sonoma Raceway chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities raised more than $75,000 through a trio of creative fundraising activities leading up to the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series race, June 6.

"This year we had to get super creative to find unique ways to raise money during our NASCAR weekend for our area children in need through these fun programs,” said SCC-Sonoma director Cheri Plattner. “We greatly appreciate the support of our donors and corporate partners in helping make these activities a great success.”

For the first time in track history, guests who made a donation to SCC through the Laps For Charity program were allowed to take their personal vehicles out on the iconic 12-turn road course and make a few laps. On Friday, June 4, 115 donors driving everything from Toyota Camrys, Dodge Hellcats, Ford Mustangs, Chevy Camaros as well as a variety of vintage roadsters and muscle cars sped around the track behind Sonoma Raceway pace cars. The event raised more than $28,000.

Another innovative program, The Fan in the Stands, showcased 173 guests who made donations to have cardboard cutouts of their likenesses positioned in the front section of the main grandstands near the start/finish line. More than $46,000 was raised through the program, which was supported by several corporate partners, including LifeWest, United Site Services, Toyota Motors North America, Kaiser Permanente, Hanson Bridgett and Ahlborn Fence.

The cutouts included FOX Race Hub personalities Shannon Spake, Larry McReynolds and Jamie McMurray. The show did a fun segment with the cutouts Sunday morning as their ace reporter Bob Pockrass did his weekend news and notes update from that grandstand section.

SCC-Sonoma also hosted an online auction during the week that raised more than $2,000.

The Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children's Charities has distributed more than $6.8 million to Sonoma County youth groups since 2001. For more information about the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, visit SpeedwayCharities.org/Sonoma.

1905!

The 1905 World Series matched the National League champion New York Giants against the American League champion Philadelphia Athletics, with the Giants winning four games to one, in the best-of-seven format.

Each of the five games was a shutout,
a one-time World Series event. Three of those, over a six-day span, were pitched and won by Christy Mathewson.

The wiki piece about the MLB World Series is worth a few minutes of your time. You will learn why the New York Giants did not first play in the 1904 World Series as NL champions. The nutshell is Giants' owner John T. Brush refused to allow his team to participate in such an event, citing the "inferiority" of the upstart American League.  https://bit.ly/3gfaGcy
