The Butler Will Do It
I write this on Sunday, with the Celtics-Heat game on Monday, the day
on which the euphoria the Celtics have experienced since their
three-second victory in Game Six will end. Good riddance to bad garbage.

Robert Manfred, heartless or clueless? Does even he know?
|
Bombastic
Utterances
by Dave Newhouse
| |
I’m not sure which description fits Rob Manfred more accurately, heartless or clueless? I’m not sure even he knows. But a recent quote from Manfred adds further evidence that he is clearly over his head as Major League Baseball commissioner. Manfred recently made a comparison between the Milwaukee Brewers’ American Family Field and the Oakland A’s likely soon-to-be-abandoned Coliseum.
“The situation (in Milwaukee) is really the antithesis of what happened in Oakland,” he offered in his usual ineptness. “This (Milwaukee facility) was an A-plus facility when it was built, it’s been well-maintained, ownership has made a commitment to not only put a competitive team on the field but to do its share in keeping the ballpark up. And most importantly, the fans here have supported the team enthusiastically.”
Hold the thought, readers, until Manfred finishes his mindless meanderings.
“Oakland, unfortunately, it’s a facility that was never as good as this one (in Beertown) when it started,” he continued. “They made some unfortunate decisions (in Oaktown) not to maintain the ballpark in a way that it needed to be maintained. It resulted in a decline in the attendance, which had an impact on the quality of the product that the team could afford to put on the field. And we’re now where we are.”
By the time you read this column, or not too far off, the decision will be made by A’s owner John Fisher to move his franchise from Oakland to Las Vegas, which then will be formalized by MLB owners who, like the NBA and NFL owners before them, will choke the life out of Oakland’s sports identity.
But Manfred, a puppet dangling in the strings of the league owners who control him, can see his own nose grow, like Pinocchio’s, from the misinformation he is spinning.
The Milwaukee ballpark was A-plus when it was built? Who’s grading? Nothing against Milwaukee, but when the Oakland Coliseum and Arena were built in 1966, Oakland was judged as the finest sports complex in the country. That’s an A-plus, too, right? And Oakland put competitive teams on the field, and in the building, and also kept up both facilities through renovation. So what is Manfred talking about through both sides of his mouth?
And he really thinks that Oaktown fans failed to support all three franchises? He misspoke again in contending that Oakland’s lack of alleged ballpark maintenance led to a decline in attendance, which meant that Fisher couldn’t then afford to put a competitive team on the field.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Fisher couldn’t afford a competitive team? He’s a Fortune 400 businessman. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Oakland’s sport attendance when its teams have demonstrated a loyalty to Oaktown by presenting a product that invites attendance rather than drive it away.
For let’s be honest, these Oakland A’s are a Triple-A product masquerading as a major-league team. That’s why they have MLB’s worst record, MLB’s lowest payroll and MLB’s lowest attendance, plus a rat roaming in the press box. Honest. Fisher has let the whole ballpark perspective go to seed.
A heartless or clueless commissioner? You, the reader, can decide, but beware of the misinformation, or bold-faced lies, that this commissioner and league owners love to pile on defenseless Oakland. We once had a beautiful, thriving sports reputation that has slowly disintegrated through ownership avarice, which is better known as corporate carpetbagging.
So stop blaming Oakland, Mr. Commissioner. Blame yourself and the owners who work for you. And who control you, which isn't very flattering.

The First Ever
In-Depth Interview with Oakland A’s Owner John Fisher
by Andy Dolich
| |
In his 18 years as owner of the Oakland A’s John J. Fisher has never given an interview to any media outlet regarding his franchise. Mr. Fisher has turned down multiple interview requests from respected local and national baseball beat writers and columnists. If ESPN can’t pull it off, maybe someone with ESP can. Maybe only a writer from “The Athletic” can get the Big Oakland Athletic to respond.
I decided to have the first one-way discussion with the A’s owner. To make sure we didn’t intrude on Mr. Fisher’s limited time, only 18 questions, one for each year of his ownership, were asked.
1. Why did you buy the A’s?
(My answer, since he’s never answered this or any other question.)
He purchased the team for $180 million dollars in 2005, according to sports bankers he could sell it for $1.4 billion dollars this afternoon. Can you $appreciate the reason why he purchased the team?
2. Why do you still own the team?
(My answer, not his.)
The A’s reportedly turn a yearly profit by pocketing $30 million dollars plus from fellow team owners. They have the lowest payroll in the game. Why should he care about attendance if he still makes a bundle?
3. Why do you refuse all interviews?
(No answer.)
4. What is the maximum amount of money you will spend on a new ballpark, including infrastructure?
(My answer, not his.)
The A’s organization has publicly stated that they would have privately financed the construction of a new ballpark in the $1 billion dollar range at Howard Terminal and will pay for a $1.5 billion for a domed stadium in Las Vegas.
What about infrastructure costs, traffic remediation, relocations, environmental impact, hiring local trade unions, legal challenges or bureaucratic roadblocks? Your organization will be handling all these details and costs, correct? If not, where is the additional investment coming from and how much will it be? Are you going to sell seat licenses to fans to help pay for the stadium? Do you have a naming rights partner in mind? Are you looking for a DTBNL? (Developer To Be Named Later)
5. What is your preferred site for a new ballpark?
(My answer, not his.)
As of today, it's a 9-acre site in Las Vegas. The smallest site of the many the A's have looked at over the years.
6. What do you want your legacy to be as owner of the A’s?
(No answer.)
7. Does losing the attendance and media battle to the Giants bother
you?
(No answer.)
8. What is your favorite part of owning a Major League Baseball
team?
(My answer, not his.) That most sports fans don’t know I own the team.
9. Why has it taken so long for you to select a site and build a new
ballpark?
(My answer, not Mr. Fisher’s.)
That he likes to take his time. The franchise has been searching for the perfect location investing tons of time and money into the process. The past eighteen years of Fisher's ownership has seen artists’ renderings and scale models of proposed ballyards at Cisco Field in Fremont, Diridon Station in San Jose, Howard Terminal, Victory Court, Coliseum City and Peralta College offices in Oakland and two sites in Las Vegas.
10. When are you going to open your new ballpark?
The Team has said 2027 in a domed ballpark in Vegas. Team President Dave Kaval has said they will sell out every game. Maybe the heat has gotten to him.
11. Where will you play when the team’s lease runs out at the
Oakland Coliseum?
Crickets
12. Mr. Fisher, are you still there?
(My answer, not his.)
I guess they could extend the Oakland lease and play in front of no fans in Oakland as long as Pete the Possum is still in the pressroom.
13. Baseball was going to charge you a $500 million dollar relocation fee for the Vegas move. Commissioner Manfred took that off the table a few months ago. How did you swing that? What did your fellow owners have to say?
Mr. Fisher. (No answer.)
14. Wouldn’t MLB and your fellow owners make more money if Las Vegas was an expansion site for $2.2 billion dollars rather than a relocation site for free?
Mr. Fisher? Would you care to elaborate? (No answer.)
15. Team President Dave Kaval has said that you could play games until your new ballpark opens in 2027 at Las Vegas Ballpark, home of your Triple A team, the Aviators. Might the MLB Players Association push back on that with average summer temps in the 100s?
Mr. Fisher? (No answer.)
16. Mr. Fisher, can you hear me now?
Mr. Fisher. (No answer.)
17. Will your new Vegas ballpark convertible ballpark be named The Gap, Old Navy Dome, Banana Republic Ballpark or Athleta Hanger?
Mr. Fisher...... (No answer.)
18 What does your middle initial J. stand for?
Mr. Fisher. (No answer.)
Mr. Dolich: “Mr. Fisher, Thank you for the time.”
Mr. Fisher........................................................................

Bay to Breakers is an annual San Francisco footrace typically on the third Sunday of May. The phrase Bay to Breakers reflects that the race starts at the northeast end of the downtown area and runs through the city to finish at the Great Highway where breakers crash onto Ocean Beach.
The course is 7.46 miles (12 km) long.
Bay to Breakers invites costumes and the 1986 edition set a Guinness World Record for being the world's largest footrace with 110,000 participants. The race was started in 1906 as a way to lift the city's spirits after
the disastrous earthquake.

The San Francisco Giants are on the rebound after

And Then I Wrote...
by Howard Pearlstein
.. about the people who see The Game as “All about ME,” a Big 10 College whose students after a game, said either “WE won” or “THEY lost!” About their own team. If you win, you’re “us.” If you lose, you’re not.
We seem to be a society that limits the people who are on “OUR” team by like and dislike, rejecting the ones we don’t understand. Maybe all societies are like that, but it’s an American tradition, if not a proud one, going back to the early founders.
Ralph Waldo Emerson saw it: “The only sin which we never forgive in each other is difference of opinion.”
Most recent example of this was the Dodgers, getting all “Look at us all Socially Equitable,” announcing an upcoming LBGTQ+ Pride Night at the stadium. Then, pressured by a religious group, disinviting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who were too flamboyant for decent folk, the way they celebrated their spiritual joy in their own idiosyncratically wonder-filled way, singing and dancing in drag and comical makeup as a part of their very traditional Christian practice (and Jewish and Muslim and Buddhist and Taoist and… ) feeding the poor, housing the homeless, and comforting the stricken. Except, as Denis Leary put it: “...there are endless things you can buy in America -- but a sense of humor isn’t one of them.”
This not about religion, just about something that took place in a religious context (e.g., being born in a manger doesn’t make Jesus a goat).
This is about the ways people deal with their favorite teams, be they athletic, political, academic, spiritual or religious and how much they know or don’t know about those favorites. It was only in her passing this week that almost everyone who loved Tina Turner learned she was a Buddhist. And found out that Buddhists don’t only chant.
There is a phrase about the Hindu point of view: “The Nine billion faces of God,” meaning each person sees a different face, despite it always being the same one.
Philosopher Moses Maimonides understood that 900 years ago: “We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.”
One of those faces is Tina Turner’s. And the late Sister Boom Boom, 10+ years since she passed along to become, “Nun of the Above.” And 40 years since mayor Feinstein signed the “Sister Boom-Boom Law” requiring mayoral candidates to ONLY use their birth names. Wow. They say history doesn’t repeat itself but sometimes it rhymes.
Limiting the world to the faces of which we approve devalues the things we love, whether it’s The Team, The Country, The God, or concepts like Love. Finding reasons to exclude someone cheapens everything, and the one most often excluded is the one that is having a good time. H.L. Mencken saw it: Puritanism is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.
That’s the tarantula on the wedding cake – they’re all laughing – and then… why are they all laughing? Are they laughing at ME?
The Stunt Man, the director, Peter O’Toole tasks his writer to identify the underlying disease of the war the movie is about.
Finally, he tells him: “It’s paranoia.”
“Is that some sort of social disease?”
“YES. You get it from screwing other people.”

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Dr. Franco Columbu -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
I watched the movie Pumping Iron in 1977 and was inspired to visit the Gold’s Gym in Venice to see if the bodybuilders were there. I didn’t see Arnold Schwarzenegger or Lou Ferrigno but I did see Dr. Franco Columbu. I watched as he and his buddies worked out like mad men lifting incredible weights. I stopped by the gym store and purchased several Gold’s Gym t-shirts and this photo. I waited until Franco was exiting the gym and asked him to sign the photo which he was more than happy to do. He spent a few minutes chatting with me and encouraged me to lead a healthy lifestyle even if I didn’t choose bodybuilding. I also found out that we shared the same birthdate on August 7th. He was also a licensed chiropractor.

Race Recap: 2023 EZ Regatta
The 2023 Elvstrom Zellerbach Regatta at StFYC delivered classic City Front conditions on Saturday with overcast skies and plenty of wind, moderated somewhat in the first two races by a weakening flood and turning to ebb by the last race of the day.
Sunday started off differently and the RC initially set up on the Alcatraz course and tried to run a race in a light-ish (well, light for SF) breeze and a building flood. While a few boats did manage to get around the weather mark, it was pretty clear it was not going to be possible to have a fair race, so the RC abandoned and picked up and moved back to the City Front. There, they were able to get in three races in a nice breeze, again, with weakening flood and beginning ebb.

Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
