A $1.5 Billion Armadillo?
A’s show off baseball stadium design for Las Vegas Strip.
-- Las Vegas Sun
| |
|
What Happens
In a Spherical Armadillo Stays In a Hyperbolic Paraboloid?
by Andy Dolich
| |
As most knowledgeable baseball ballpark zoologists know, there
are 21 living species of armadillos classified under four subfamilies.
Even though I can’t seem to find the Spherical Armadillo on that list, the A’s are using it as their descriptive definition in the latest artist renderings from the design minds creating their proposed new ballpark in Las Vegas.
We know for sure that the Giant Armadillo doesn't ever show itself in or around McCovey Cove.
Stomper, the A’s trusted mascot, knows he could squash any of these placental mammals with a misstep of his elephantine foot: the Three-, Six-, Seven- and Nine-Banded Armadillo, Screaming Hairy Armadillo, Pink Fairy Armadillo, Greater Fairy Armadillo. Northern Naked-Tailed Armadillo and Greater Long-Nosed Armadillo.
Let’s not forget “Fuleco,” the 2014 FIFA World Cup three-banded armadillo mascot in Brazil or “Ace the Armadillo,” who proudly scurries around at San Antonio College sports events.
Hard as I tried, I couldn’t set up a call with the top armadillo expert in the United States, Dr. Armor D. Rollup, to help understand this unique stadium species. A’s stadium visionary, Bjarke Ingels, waxed Spherical on his critter visionary inspiration. He further promoted the proposed Armadillo Dome Home as a "Hyperbolic Paraboloid" which he described: "It's a hyperbolic paraboloid or a saddle shape which means that you have the thinnest possible structure, the greatest transparency and that basically creates this frame view of the Strip.”
Was he trying to have the A's ballpark compared to the "Sphere"? This revolutionary music and entertainment arena in Paradise, Nevada has been wowing fans since it opened in September of 2023.
I apologize if I’m incorrect, but I believe this will be the first major league ballpark designed by the Bjarke Ingels Groups (BIG). Like many A’s fans who have grown tired of proposed ballpark renderings -- 14 and counting -- I am confused as to what, how, why and when these flights of fancy will turn into an actual bricks, mortar, metal, natural turf, foul poles, baseball field, glass, seats, suites, bathrooms, concession stands, parking spaces and air-conditioned seats at the A’s ballpark in Las Vegas? When might the first pitch be thrown?
I will give you my winning Mega Millions ticket if it opens at the start of the MLB season in 2028.

The first two periods saw a defensive battle, with several ties and change of leads, as Cal built a 10-point lead but Hawaii would fight back and finally fall to the Golden Bears, 65-60, in the first round of the WBIT. Above, Cal graduate Ioanna Krimili (#32) took control in the waning minutes to slow down the pace and kill the clock for the Bears to ensure the win, as the University of California Golden Bears, hosted the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, CA on March 21, 2024. The World Gone to Hell, Sports
and the G League
by Howard Pearlstein
The question -- Why, with all the gone-to-hell horrors going on in the world – humans killing humans wreaking death and destruction from San Diego up to Maine, Florida to Vancouver and Alaska, all around the world, Antarctica to Siberia, Manila to Ireland and everywhere else, why, when we can see the horrors every day on TV, why would anyone think playing or watching sports could be important?
Because irrespective of which particular sport you enjoy from Curling to Mixed Martial Arts, Soccer to Archery, Baseball, Basketball, Football (American and Rest of the world Other Football), Swimming, Diving, Dog Frisbee, Darts, Marbles, Pool, Tennis, et al -- sports are the one place where we know what the game is, with agreed-upon rules and agreed-upon arbiters of those rules who will impose agreed-upon penalties for breaking those rules.
“Winning” and “losing” are clearly defined. AND – very important -- if you lose, you still get to live. (And given some luck and the Rules of The Road prevailing out there in the wild, live long enough to get home.)
And the biggest thing about all that, back in the day when people remembered it’s NOT a life-and-death thing, there was a thing called “Sportsmanship.” Simply put, if you lose, you don’t burn down the other guy’s house or kill his dog. You summon up a smile, say something like “Good game,” or “Well played,” or “See you next time.” And if you win, it’s the same thing. You don’t rub it in. What you do, as a wise man once said is “Act like you’ve been there before.”
The overall idea (or is it underlying?) is you carry that sense of fair play and Sportsmanship out into the world where the rules aren’t as clearly written but pretty much understood: Give the other person the same respect you want the other person to give you, including female persons who are too often overlooked in that standard. (And be kind to dogs and cats and other animals.)
SO.
That being said, back to my lifelong favorite team, the Dubs. I had made a point of how winning isn’t the only thing, that the game itself is. Except right now for the Dubs, the thing is getting into the playoffs, meaning closing out the regular season with a whole bunch of W’s.
And last week, the change from the pitifully inept, totally unfocused disaster against the Knicks to the eminently capable ass-kicking of the Grizzlies two days later, gave us the hope of once again knowing they CAN do it so then, ok, maybe they WILL do it. Friday not so much.
I was writing about the G League, the NBA minor league, a place where the development of undrafted players and rookies could go on with experienced coaches and 50 games a year. (There was also a G League Ignite, for those deemed to be elite, but good idea or not, starting in 2020, the chances of succeeding during the mask-wearing, distance-keeping 2,000-deaths a week COVID was not likely).
And unlike baseball minors, moving back and forth from one to the other was easy, higher level of play up top, rookies playing with veterans, more minutes to play in the G League working on improving this or that, ideally giving both teams the same DNA. Which may have happened since last Friday BOTH teams came on strong early, the Dubs and the G team, and both slid behind after the half, falling apart and losing at the end, something both teams need to work on.

Do you play Facebook's Quiz Planet?
I do. One of the sports questions this week was:
Who won the first NBA Slam Dunk Contest?
Multiple choices for me did not help -- I guessed the wrong name every time. Larry Nance of the Phoenix Suns was the first NBA winner, in 1984.
The Slam Dunk Contest originated with the American Basketball Association in 1976 at the final ABA All-Star game before merging with the NBA. Julius "Doctor J" Erving of the New York Nets was the winner. The New York Nets are now the Brooklyn Nets. Now for the question of the week:
The Nets are one of four teams who gained NBA membership with the merger of the ABA and NBA. Who are the other three teams?

Buster Posey -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
I had many opportunities to work closely with former San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey over the years. He was the spokesperson and endorser for Body Armour sports drink, and I was the photographer for Body Armour.
I photographed his promo photos for BA, public appearances, youth baseball camps, golf tournaments, private events and covered his home games with the Giants. Over the years I was fortunate enough to collect several autographed baseballs, photos and jerseys in black, tan, orange and gold WS edition. He was always happy to sign autographs and answer questions for me.
This week, on March 27th, Buster will celebrate his 37th birthday.
We wish him the best.

Vol. 72: So Much Speculation Surrounding NIL Collective Contracts
| |
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
by Darren Heitner
Founder of HEITNERLEGAL
448 athletes entered the transfer portal on the 1st day it opened earlier this week. That counts as the largest pool of athletes to enter their names into the portal on the 1st day since the portal became a thing in 2018.
While the focus has primarily been on basketball players, one name in the world of football made many headlines, largely based on pure speculation as to the circumstances of his financial situation.
That player is Kadyn Proctor who, in June 2022, committed to Iowa, and then roughly 6 months later flipped his commitment to Alabama a mere 2 days before Signing Day. In January of this year, he entered the transfer portal and a few days later committed to Iowa. But this week, Proctor once again changed his mind and decided he would return to Alabama.
Proctor is an offensive tackle, a position that commonly demands the most money from NIL collectives (along with QBs and centers) -- entities that require athletes to perform deliverables and often seek some sort of return on their investment but are also heavily motivated to entice athletes to commit to and enroll at the schools that they were created to support. A top-of-the-line offensive lineman such as Proctor can command 7-figures from a collective.

OOakland Falls 1-0 on the Road in Phoenix
Phoenix Rising took a second-half Panos Armenakas strike and rode that to a one-nil victory over visiting Oakland Roots.
The game was quiet early, with neither side creating a major chance until the final 15 minutes of the first half.
Phoenix Rising created two dangerous chances that forced big saves out of Oakland Roots goalkeeper Paul Blaunchette in the final 15 minutes of the half, but the score remained scoreless into the halftime break.
Phoenix got on the board early in the second half through Panos Armenakas in the 48th minute following some quick one-touch passing to set him up and give the host the 1-0 lead.
The home side, Rising, would hold onto the one-goal lead until the end of the 90 minutes, securing all three points.
Roots will be back home next week to face Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, March 30th at 7 p.m.

Oakland Ballers Welcome Asphalt Improvements Alongside Raimondi Park and Thank Oakland Public Servants
Oakland, CA – The Oakland Ballers applaud the City of Oakland for commencing an asphalt pavement improvement project on the roads leading to Raimondi Park.
“Oakland is about to prove hella doubters wrong. When people complain our Town can't get things done, tell them about the deep support the Oakland Ballers have received from public servants and elected officials who work for the City of Oakland.
The repaving project that began yesterday will make bike and pedestrian access to Ballers games much easier, and will also improve access to the countless thriving small businesses of West Oakland.
The B’s believe in building with community. And that’s why, from day one, we have sought to engage community groups like the Prescott Neighborhood Council, and the friends of Raimondi Park, and are partnering with neighborhood businesses like the Prescott Market.
We’re excited for our first game in a refurbished ballpark at Raimondi Park on June 4 and we can’t wait to see you there.” Paul Freedman, co-founder and CEO of Oakland Ballers
On February 15th, we announced our plans to activate a historic Oakland ballpark for their inaugural Spring 2024 season. Raimondi Park in West Oakland has been chosen as the home field, a park renowned for nurturing baseball talent and hailed for producing "more baseball stars than any park in the country." Since then we’ve been working with the city to obtain necessary approvals. We are now working hard to ensure the ballpark is ready for the first home game of the season on June 4, fans can buy their tickets on OaklandBallers.com.

Paving is Complete at Sonoma Raceway!
Charity event lets participants break in the new asphalt on the newly-repaved road course.
After 61 days of work, crews from Bay Cities Paving & Grading and ABSL Construction finally removed their hard hats to celebrate the completion of the Sonoma Raceway road course repave project. In honor of the first complete repave in 23 years, the track is offering to be one of the first to drive the newly repaved road course, and support local kids and families in need at the same time.
The transformation started to take shape after the Christmas holiday with crews milling the old surface of the track as the calendar flipped to a new year. Over the course of two months, the track was ground down, cracks were repaired and brand-new, long-lasting asphalt was put down to enhance the racing surface at Sonoma Raceway. With paving complete, the 2.52-mile road course is once again ready to host some of the fastest cars and most talented racers in the world.
To start, the Drive For Charity – First Laps event March 11 from 9am – 4pm will give participants the opportunity to take three laps around the track in their own car and experience the smoothest surface the track has seen in decades. All proceeds benefit Speedway Children's Charities Sonoma, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway, which supports local children and families in critical need.

Cal Takes Series From Arizona For
Third Straight Season
BERKELEY – Acacia Anders hit a 2-run home run in the sixth inning and the No. 19 California softball team hung on in the seventh inning for an 8-7 victory over No. 21 Arizona to secure the series on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Anders, Tatum Anzaldo and Lagi Quiroga recorded two hits apiece for the Golden Bears (24-8, 3-6 Pac-12). Allie Skaggs had three RBI to pace the Wildcats (21-9-1, 4-5 Pac-12).
The Bears' series win against the Wildcats was their third straight, just the second time in program history Cal has taken three series in a row against Arizona (2011-13).
In a series that turned out to feature 42 combined runs in the three games, the two offenses both got off to a hot start again on Sunday. Skaggs hit a 3-run homer in the first inning to put Arizona on top, but Cal battled right back in the home half, all with two outs.

Nightmare Ninth Spoils Strong Start
Christian Lim dealt 6 1/3 scoreless innings as Stanford led 1-0 headed to the ninth inning
STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman starter Christian Lim dealt 6 1/3 scoreless innings, and the Cardinal carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth, but Creighton (17-3) scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn an 8-2 victory and clinch a series win over the Cardinal (9-11) on Sunday from Sunken Diamond.
Lim allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out a career-best 11 batters. The native of Nashville, Tenn. retired 12 straight from the second out in the second inning through one out in the sixth. Lim recorded eight of his first nine outs via the strikeout, including striking out back-to-back hitters to strand the bases loaded in the first.

Saint Mary's College Gaels
MBB | Season Comes to an End
in Spokane
SPOKANE, Wash. — The opening round of the NCAA Tournament pitted two of the premiere mid-major west coast basketball teams in the country, as the fifth seeded WCC Champion Gaels (26-8) took on the 12th seeded WAC Champion Grand Canyon Antelopes (30-4) at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. The two teams locked in a tight contest for the first 20 minutes, and while the Lopes got off to a strong start in the second, the Gaels rallied to keep things close. At then final horn however, the early second half surge by GCU was too much for the Gaels to overcome, as they fell 75-66.
The Gaels coughed the ball up on their first two possessions, but their signature defense kept the game close. The offense found their footing to the tune of three straight makes to take oa 6-5 advantage, but then converted on just two of their next 15 field goal attempts. Again, however, where offense lacked, defense reigned supreme, as the Gaels would break out of their shooting slump to drain four in a row and regain the lead at 19-18 with 8:08 to go in the frame. Trading blow after physical blow, the two sides battled back and forth in a frame that saw two ties and 10 lead changes, and never saw a team trail by more than four. GCU took a 28-25 lead with 35 seconds left in the half, but Luke Barrett buried a 15 foot baseline jumper with five ticks to go, cutting the deficit to just one at the break. Mitchell Saxen led the Gaels with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal. As a team, Saint Mary's scored 20 of their 27 points in the paint. Defensively, the Gaels held GCU to 16.7% shooting from three, and turned them over seven times, scoring seven points off of those turnovers.

Dons Fall to Golden Gophers in High-Scoring Affair
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Reaching double-digit runs for the fourth time this season, the University of San Francisco baseball team (14-9), dropped a narrow 12-10 decision to Minnesota (9-10) Saturday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Minnesota scored the opening run for the second consecutive game, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an Ike Mezzenga RBI single to left field.
San Francisco bounced back in the bottom of the opening frame, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. With two runners on the base path, Michael Campagna sliced a single to left field, scoring Kody Watanabe. Patrick Keighran scored later on a TJ Rogers fielder's choice.
The Golden Gophers answered in the following inning, tying the game at two on a Kyle Bork RBI single through the middle of the infield, scoring Josh Fitzgerald.
After Minnesota grabbed its first lead in the top of the fourth, 3-2, San Francisco responded with three unanswered runs to push ahead, 5-3.

Record-Setting Season Ends for Women's Basketball in Second Round of WBIT
PULLMAN, Wash. – Santa Clara women's basketball's historic season came to an end in the second round of the WBIT with a 73-47 loss to top-seeded Washington State Sunday afternoon. In a defense-first game, neither team shot well but the Broncos especially struggled from downtown and couldn't make up the difference inside the arc as the Cougars pulled away in the fourth after the game was all but decided.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Washington State (19-12) got out to a 9-2 lead before back-to-back 3-pointer by Jayde Cadee and Lara Edmanson cut the Santa Clara (25-8) deficit to one. The Broncos would use a 6-0 run late in the period to take a brief lead but the Cougars scored the final five of the quarter and led 18-14 after the opening 10 minutes.
The teams went back and forth for the first part of the second but Washington State outscored Santa Clara 10-2 over the final 5:08 to lead 32-24 at the half.

UC Davis Comes Up Short in 4-1 Defeat to Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- After two extra-innings defeats on Saturday afternoon, UC Davis couldn't avoid the sweep as Long Beach State showed why they were last season's conference champions with a 4-1 win on Sunday.
The Aggies (10-15, 1-5 Big West) mustered just three runs in the series and struggled to find the big hit when they needed it most.
Anna Dethlefson enjoyed a 1-for-3 day while scoring the lone run of the game for Davis' team. The Fair Oaks native racked up another stolen base to make it four steals in the last three games. Leah Polson recorded an RBI base hit in her 2-for-4 day - her sixth multi-hit day of the season - to continue her solid senior campaign.
Sarah Nakahara and Marley Panziera each collected a hit in the series finale.

THE HISTORY OF ST. FRANCIS YACHT CLUB
There is a tide that flows through the Golden Gate. There is a tide in the affairs of men.
In 1927, San Francisco Bay sailors crossed both in a single tack. The Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 had reimagined the waterfront to the east of the Army’s Presidio, and one of the developments was a harbor. After the fair, the harbor remained. With that, it became possible to imagine placing a yacht club on the San Francisco city front, and there were visionaries with that in mind. They believed the city was “the” place for a great yacht club on San Francisco Bay.

"Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road.
