Spring Training Was A Hit --
For Me Too!
| |
Kayla Webster (left) and Linda, her mother, attended a
Giants vs. Cubs spring training game on March 22nd.
| |
This spring my mom and I were lucky enough to continue our tradition of attending Spring Training to watch the San Francisco Giants. My husband came with us for the first time this year. We attended Friday’s split squad game against the Cubs, sitting along the left field line at Scottsdale Stadium.
The weather was great, but the Giants were already down eight runs going into the third inning. Then in the Cubs' fourth inning, I believe during Christopher Morel’s at-bat, he hit a line drive foul ball that I watched sail over the protective net and then felt an impact on my stomach and the wind left my body. Everyone around me was asking if I was okay, and I couldn’t believe I was.
A man sitting in our row walked over to me and handed me the ball. Even if I had my glove with me, it would have been useless because the ball came at me too fast to react, and I was also in the middle of eating a pretzel. I was evaluated by the medical staff at the park, and the ballpark staff checked on me throughout the remainder of the game -- they were so nice! After that, the Giants' luck turned around because they came back to win, and I went home with a baseball and a bruise for souvenirs! The first picture below is right after the ball hit me. The second picture is the day after.

NOT a souvenir anyone wants!
Fortunately a quick recovery.

What I Want and Why Online Gambling Might Be the
Death of What We Love About Professional Sports
by Howard Pearlstein
This is the time of year when a whole lot of, “What I Want” as a
fan and TV enthusiast runs rampant thru the end of the Rainy Season.
Right now is when fans of MLB BasebalI, NBA Basketball and NFL Football watch to see what our teams are doing – roster changes, contracts and holdouts, upcoming draft picks. In other words, we’re watching to see what those teams are or aren’t doing according to need, want, or can afford to do, all compared to what we who sit on couches and in comfy chairs eating popcorn indulge ourselves in what WE want.
So – the Dubs. Right now their focused goal is to win out the season and get into the playoffs. And we want the Dubs players to have perfect games and more, to have a lot of those plays, the ones that are followed by a big smile, sometimes a surprised look, that it was perfect, actually worked.
On the other hand, many of us would be consolation-prize happy if they don’t have to extend the too-long season through the playoffs, happy for their bodies and brains to get the same two months of rest, rehab, and relief from stress as the teams that didn’t.
And for all of us, I’d love for the regular season and schedule to be kind enough to allow all of them to be undamaged so we can see the best on the court when it’s time for the best to play the best.
But I’m not going to be an arrogant keyboard krap head and pretend I know more about how to deal with the life, health and career of the players than the coaches and the players, so I can only say this: the NBA regular season is too long – by around 15 games.
Right now, NFL Football fans are in the Nostrodamnfool mode of predicting what their team will do, should do, and what the outcome of either will be. Among the weeds of draft choices and contract extensions, the 49ers’ choice seems fairly obvious: a new, improved contract for the Wide Receiver who has developed an almost psychic connection to the most wonderful QB surprise since Bill Walsh decided that if he could design a system that appreciated the talents and abilities of his third round draft pick, Joe Montana could become the greatest QB in 49er history – maybe the Greatest of All Time. (In those days, the appellation of GOAT was not the acronym for that Championship Kudo, but referred to the poor bastard on whom the blame for all the bad stuff will fall; the goat, sometime alternatively referred to as The Geek.)
As for MLB baseball, John Anal Fissure has made sure there’s only one team in the Bay Area, moving the A’s to Las Vegas, where whores and gambling comprise the Gross State Product. Plus, to bring in the suckers and the horny, all the “Let Me Entertain You” dancers, singers, actors, et al, professionals who, like the athletes, spent years developing their talents and abilities, until inheritance babies like Fissure and Davis (not Capitalism -- Primogeniture and Entail) -- debase their achievements, proving William Blake’s observation, inscribed on his etching of The Laocoon: “Where there is a view to money, art cannot exist but war only.”
Add in millions of TV fans, able to place bets real time between beers and they’ll make damn sure point spreads and over/under predictions degrade whatever’s left of the game.

Tony La Russa -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
In 1995 I was attending a sports collectors show at the Cow Palace. As I was walking up and down the aisles I noticed a man was stopping at each of the vendor booths and handing out these fliers to promote another sports collector show in December. I recognized the man as Tony La Russa who was the Oakland A’s manager at the time. He handed me one of the flyers and I asked him to sign it
which he did for free.
Tony went on to become the second winningest MLB manager with 2901 wins and second to manage 5097 games. He was also the second manager to win a World Series in both leagues.

Vol. 73: NIL Collectives Increasingly Looking At Buyout And Non-Guarantee Language
| |
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
by Darren Heitner
Founder of HEITNERLEGAL
Sports agent Daniel Poneman provided a tip to NIL collectives this week. He noted that they can sign college athletes to multi-year deals with buyouts.
He offered the following example: Spread the payment over 3 years (Year 1 - $125k; Year 2 - $150k; Year 3 - $200k) with each year being player options because nothing precludes the player from entering the transfer portal, but include a provision in the collective contract that says something like, "if student athlete transfers to outside of a 15 mile radius of (collective location) they must reimburse the collective for 50% of previous year’s NIL income."
This makes sense, and I'm already starting to see this type of language appear in NIL collective contracts. I am also observing many collectives, at least in their initial drafts (before my redlining), try to insert language that heavily backloads compensation and even makes it completely non-guaranteed by stating that the payments don't become due to the player until after the collective unilaterally asks for a specific deliverable and that deliverable is fully performed, with payment being contingent to that process playing out.
The big question then becomes, will these collectives have the appetite to become involved in the business of collections, as enforcing the agreements will likely include arbitration proceedings (most contacts I review in the space require mandatory arbitration), followed by petitions to confirm arbitration awards and then writs of garnishments. This is not a fun nor inexpensive process plus, after arbitration, it's likely to catch the attention of the general public and I'm not certain NIL collectives are prepared for the PR backlash that may be associated with same.
Separately, a problem exists as these collectives become wiser but athletes don't feel the need to retain reputable representation. An athlete may be thinking he is signing a lucrative contract that is almost entirely non-guaranteed and perhaps includes the aforementioned type of buyout language. Such a one-sided contract is unlikely to be scrutinized and redlined absent legal involvement. Many collectives have informed me that this is the case.

Texas road trip continues next Saturday
vs. Austin FC
HOUSTON, Texas – The San Jose Earthquakes fell 2-1 to Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium in front of 16,184 fans, as two goals by the hosts in the last 10 minutes of regulation would be the difference.
San Jose opened the scoring in the second minute when a Bruno Wilson headed home a Cristian Espinoza corner kick. However, that early lead went into peril in minute 34, as a scuffle away from the ball between Preston Judd and Houston’ defender Erik Sviatchenko led to the Quakes forward being shown a red card, leaving the visitors with 10 men.
William Yarbrough, making his second straight start at goalkeeper for the Quakes for the injured Daniel, answered the call in the second half making multiple saves at point-blank range. But the hosts would finally break through with nine minutes left in regulation when Sebastian Ferreira netted. Houston would score the game-winner in the 85th minute when an unmarked Franco Escobar blasted a ball off a Yarbrough save into the back of the net. San Jose finished the game with nine men after Jackson Yueill received two bookings in succession.
The Quakes’ Texas road trip continues next Saturday against Austin FC on Saturday, April 6. Kickoff from Q2 Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, as well as on local radio via AM 810 The Spread (English) and AM 1370 La Kaliente (Spanish).

ORoots Give Up Three Goals in Second Half, Fall 3-0 to Las Vegas Lights FC
A strong first half for Oakland led to a second half meltdown in the East Bay as visiting Las Vegas Lights FC earned all three points in a 3-0 shutout.
Roots started out the match strong, earning prime scoring chances seemingly one after another. This pressure continued for nearly the entire first frame, but Oakland could not convert any of their attacks and headed into the half still deadlocked at 0-0.
As good as the home side looked in the first half, they were lost in the second. Las Vegas opened the scoring just moments after the second half kickoff when Coleman Gannon struck a ball that deflected off a Roots defender, just escaping the reach of Paul Blanchette and finding space under the crossbar.
Only minutes later the Lights doubled their lead on a placed shot, this time off the foot of Gaoussou Samake.
To put the game away for good, Las Vegas scored their third of the second half in the 66th minute courtesy of Valentin Noël.
Oakland continued to battle, but the field remained tilted in favor of the Lights for the remainder of the match. Oakland will return to the East Bay for their next match of the USL Championship season looking for redemption when they host visiting Monterey Bay FC on April 6th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.

Paving is Complete at Sonoma Raceway!
Charity event lets participants break in the new asphalt on the newly-repaved road course.
After 61 days of work, crews from Bay Cities Paving & Grading and ABSL Construction finally removed their hard hats to celebrate the completion of the Sonoma Raceway road course repave project. In honor of the first complete repave in 23 years, the track is offering to be one of the first to drive the newly repaved road course, and support local kids and families in need at the same time.
The transformation started to take shape after the Christmas holiday with crews milling the old surface of the track as the calendar flipped to a new year. Over the course of two months, the track was ground down, cracks were repaired and brand-new, long-lasting asphalt was put down to enhance the racing surface at Sonoma Raceway. With paving complete, the 2.52-mile road course is once again ready to host some of the fastest cars and most talented racers in the world.
To start, the Drive For Charity – First Laps event March 11 from 9am – 4pm will give participants the opportunity to take three laps around the track in their own car and experience the smoothest surface the track has seen in decades. All proceeds benefit Speedway Children's Charities Sonoma, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway, which supports local children and families in critical need.

YEAR-ROUND JUNIOR SAILING AND SUMMER CAMPS
We teach kids as young as eight years old, in boats sized just for them. For the older and more accomplished, we offer trapeze sailing with spinnakers, keelboat sailing and anything that pops up when opportunity strikes. You do not have to be a St. Francis Yacht Club member for your child to participate in these programs, and we find time for giggles so a kid can be a kid.
New sailors start with the Learn to Sail program and grow into Learn to Race. Sailors ages 8-11 sail our very manageable RS Teras. At about age 12, they grow into the RS Feva and C420, a two-person dinghy that our more ambitious teenagers race in national championships. Our J/22 programs are popular for teens who want to sail with friends, friends and more friends and get a grip on handling keelboats. All of these are excellent training vessels, provided and maintained by the Club.
