Pete Wismann is the longest living 49er | |
|
Oldest 49er shooting for 106
by Dave Newhouse
| |
The 1940s-1950s center-linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers sat engaged at the dining room table in the Palo Alto home he built himself. He still has a full head of hair, and his warm smile remains youthful. And he just celebrated a milestone that surpassed even his football achievements.
Pete Wismann is 100 years old.
He reached the century mark Oct. 9, making him the oldest living 49er. Thus he a sporting chance of overtaking the oldest 49er ever, halfback Ken Casanega, a Santa Clara University alum who played on the first 49ers team of 1946, and lived 100 years, 10 months before passing away in 2021.
The 49ers drafted Wismann out of St. Louis University in the 15th round in 1949, when the franchise was in the All-America Football Conference. He then left the 49ers, and the NFL, in 1952 to become a contractor, building numerous homes on the Peninsula, including his own brick masonry. He returned to the 49ers in 1954 because of a shortage of centers, then retired again, thereby earning a fifth season and an NFL pension.
His wide shoulders still suggest the 6-foot-2, 218-pound football player that he was, though centers and linebackers were much lighter in weight then. And his memory is agelessly acute as he reminisced about a long, full — really full — life during a 40-minute interview.
How does it feel turning 100?
“No different,” he said.
No different from what?
“Regular life.”
What got you to 100?
“Being a good boy.”
Missing anything at 100?
“The answer is no.”
Any body replacements?
“One side, two hips, both knees.”
What’s your longevity?
“One hundred and six, that’s mine (prediction) I thank God for the shape I’m in. I’m here for a purpose, and it hasn’t come up yet.”
He believes his masonry work has kept him alive. As a former 49er, he put in a barbecue and swimming pool at team owner Tony Morabito’s residence. Wismann was a brick mason into his 90s, though mainly, by then, as a consultant.
His highest salary as a 49er?
“Six thousand dollars, but because I was laying brick back then, I didn’t need the money."
A favorite personal 49er memory?
“In 1953, playing against the Cleveland Browns, I intercepted a pass and got to the 1-yard line, where Bill Willis got me. I intercepted Otto Graham twice that day.”
His most-talented 49er teammate?
“Hugh McElhenny. He was an outstanding runner; no one guy could bring him down. McElhenny and (fullback) Joe Perry were our really good players.”
Those 49ers teams didn’t win like much later 49ers. Why?
“Our scoring kept us down. We didn’t rate with everybody. I think we’d do pretty well today, but we wouldn’t be big enough.”
And Pete Wismann — your gridiron strengths?
“I was a good snapper for the kicker. And I was a good tackler, head on all the time, though I never had a head injury.”
Any final thoughts about reaching the century mark?
“Yeah, I do. I feel like I’m in my 80s, but I’ve fallen 10 times over the past year.”
A walking device was by Wismann’s side. A walker for a man still walking at 100.

Letters to the Editor
Wanted: JimmyG Haters -- Where did y'all go?
Sorry to rain on your parades, but JimmyG just passed for 235 yards and two touchdowns in a flawless performance and a 31-14 victory over Los Angeles, as San Francisco scored 24 unanswered points to finish its eighth consecutive regular-season victory over L.A.
Surely that depressed reporter who prowls arena basements, mic. and script in hand after 49ers games, will find a creative way to find some flaws. Or will it be "Happy Time"?
I prefer J.J. Walker: DYN-O-MITE!!

My photo of a dory run of Grand Canyon's Crystal Rapids has special significances to me for various reasons -- photographic, historical, sentimental. I am delighted for it to, after a half century, reach an audience, especially an appreciative one. Thanks for the opportunity.

49ers Spook Rams
BOO! As in a masterful LA LA Palooza Halloween Trick
on L.A. by the 49ers.
With receivers who jumped to catch Jimmy G's passes,
a dominant O-Line, Ray-Ray McCloud III, Dwelley, Banks and other players too-often overlooked stationed in the right spots to make key plays, plus Bosa, Kittle and the Beef,
the Niners brought everything but spray paint to SoFi.
Add the new kid on the block, Christian McCaffrey, (the first player in 49er history to record a rushing, receiving and passing touchdown in the same game), and Jimmy G's
superlative performance, this was a major haul of CANDY for the 49ers on this Halloween eve, and a lot of Empty Paper Bags for their cry-baby rivals after this 31-14 Niner victory.
The clip below is 10:41 and shows a hard-fought game, with no shortage of cheap shots by L.A. If watched in its entirety, it provides a good example of Momentum Shift and the Niners' impressive power and versatility. On the ground and through the air there are some great individual performances by Jimmy G, Christian, Aiyuk and Kittle, coupled with a strong cast of gritty, tough characters to back them up.

Warriors Community Foundation To Grant Over $2.4 Million To 66 Bay Area Non-Profits, Bringing Total Impact To Over $30 Million Since Inception
SAN FRANCISCO – The Warriors Community Foundation, embarking on its 10th Anniversary, has announced the grand opening of the San Francisco Generation Thrive location. In partnership with Kaiser Permanente, Generation Thrive, a first-of-its-kind non-profit hub, works to uplift the at-risk educational community and focus support efforts in three main areas: educational equity, college and career readiness, and health and wellness.
“In the first seven months of in-person programming, Generation Thrive’s flagship Oakland location has quickly established itself as the leader in educator support,” said Warriors Community Foundation President of the Board, Nicole Lacob. “We have offered over 70 teacher trainings, over 75 hours of non-profit capacity building sessions, and over 40 hours of health and resilience training. In a time where educators and teachers need more support than ever before, we are so thankful to lock arms with Kaiser Permanente as we expand the Generation Thrive footprint to Thrive City in San Francisco.”
Additionally, to celebrate its 10th Anniversary the Warriors Community Foundation has announced an all-time single-year high of $2.42 million in grants, which tops last year’s record of $1.85 million as the most-ever awarded by the Foundation. Manny Pacquiao/Freddy Roach
From the Autograph Collection of

On April 9, 2016 Manny Pacquiao defeated Timothy Bradley at the MGM in Las Vegas. In the weeks prior to that fight Manny was training at the Wild Card Boxing gym in Los Angeles with his trainer Freddy Roach. I went to the gym on media day and photographed
the training.
Up close and personal I was amazed at the focus, power and speed this man possessed. After the media session I left the gym while Manny continued his training into the evening. When he came out of the gym I approached him and asked him to sign my boxing glove which he was glad to do. The next morning I arrived at the gym early and had the opportunity to speak with Freddy Roach for about 15 minutes and was given a mini tour of the gym. Freddy also signed my boxing glove and I thanked him for his time.

I already write drabbly narrative and on my own figured out tricks and sleights of hand inspired by Point Candlestick Giants reliever Stu Miller. Hitting one hundred words, precisely, is a challenge but not that trying. I researched for the art of Drabble and found Writing One Hundred Word Stories (Drabbles) For Magazines and will be reading cover-to-cover graced by lauding Dedication to B.F. Skinner, Ph.D and a curious Index that performs on multiple levels, sorta like 3-D chess or Asian stock exchanges. Minimize surnames and always keep first names simple for my punished readers and several naïfs.

Clever Subterfuge
By Rudi Petschek
My friend Hal, a man of detail and forethought, enjoyed smoking his weed at any time he pleased. On a river trip through Grand Canyon four decades back, to sidestep concealment whenever he felt like a puff, Hal came prepared to smoke unmolested, even unsuspected, while in plain view.
| |
Hal had purchased a pipe and a small amount of tobacco specifically for a brief presentation at the first day's lunch stop. While cooks prepared the meal and folks were getting acquainted, Hal mingled among the crowd, conspicuously and theatrically stuffing tobacco into his pipe as he ambled among the group of hungry passengers.
By the time the group re-embarked after lunch, Hal had accomplished his purpose, having sequentially engaged folks individually while blowing clouds of tobacco smoke in their direction to imprint in everyone’s mind his pipe's content's familiar aroma. Henceforth, whenever the mood struck him, Hal would amble downwind of everyone, even if just by an arm length, and delight in smoking his weed in plain view unmolested, even unsuspected,
exactly as planned.

Oakland Roots Fall in Western Conference Semifinals
San Antonio got on the board first inside of two minutes through Sam Adeniran who cooly finished past a scrambling Roots defense to give the home side the 1-0 lead. Not long after Victor Giro went down with an injury forcing an early substitution for San Antonio. Roots started to create some pressure as the half progressed but were unable to convert that into a major chance on goal inside the first 30 minutes. The first major chance fell the way of Roots in the 32nd minute when Danny Barbir headed just over the bar from just a few yards out. Just minutes later Ottar Karlssson would see his strike from 15 yards out saved by Jordan Farr as San Antonio remained in the lead. Despite the Roots' chances after going down early the half would end with San Antonio in a 1-0 lead.
Oakland came out on the front foot early in the second half earning a free kick and a corner inside of the first five minutes of the half. The second half progressed for another ten minutes without either side creating a chance. Roots made an attacking change as the pressure began to mount, but they were hit with a San Antonio strike in the 75th minute from Santiago Patiño to give the home side the 2-0. Oakland made more attacking subs but it was not to be as Oakland once again fell in the Western Conference Semifinal for the second straight season. San Antonio would find one last goal in stoppage time to send Oakland home with a 3-0 defeat and out of the playoffs.

FIELD OF PLAY
For the past 60 years, Michael Zagaris has taken his camera behind the scenes of the NFL, capturing the moments that define America’s game. With unparalleled access—42 Super Bowls, 49 seasons as team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, and a behind-the-scenes passport to the rest of the NFL—Zagaris takes his aim beyond the field and to the locker room, the bench, the practices, and the training camps. His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider.
With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights Zagaris’s storied career as a photographer, showcasing the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
