G-Men are RUF and READY! And Our Survey Says...
What a thriller of a Home Opener!
On the Giant's Season Preview Show there was a wide range of opinions from the "experts" interviewed about Las Vegas' projected "84.5 Over/Under on games the Giants will win this season, with a third place finish."
George Kontos opined 87 wins. Rich Aurelia, an unenthusiastic 86-87, with 90 needed for second place, and Randy Winn was a somber, Bah humbug "Under" at 84.
Now for the smart people! Shawn Estes went all "Rodney Dangerfield" on the 84.5, as in "Where's the Respect?" "Twenty-three fewer wins than last year with a better rotation, great bullpen, and the DH which will help the offense?" And Carlos Ramirez wins the first "What 'Chu Talkin' 'Bout Willis?" Award, with his buoyant 95-67 projection... and he wouldn't back down from it.
I'm with Carlos. This team has that same "je ne sais quoi" as last year's, demonstrated by Captain Belt's Maritime-themed arrival and the way the team bolted out onto the field after RUF stormed home, Frank Gore style, for the Win! G-Men are RUF and READY! Buckle up!

Giants Off to Good Start
By Bruce Macgowan
|
|
It’s quite early in the2022 season but let’s looks at three things that could prove pivotal if the San Francisco Giants are to make it to the post season again.
1.) San Francisco’s bullpen must maintain consistency. Last year, this was arguably the team’s number one strength. Manager Gabe Kapler has many options and is not afraid to use as many as four or five relievers a game. In this past Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Marlins, Kapler went to his pen and used four relievers. The quartet combined to allow just two hits in nearly six innings of work to preserve a 3-2 win.
Two guys who really looked impressive were lefthander Jarlin Garcia and right-hander Dominic Leone. Garcia is a hulking lefthander who stands at 6-3 and weighs 240 pounds. The guy looks like an NFL linebacker and throws hard. After bouncing around between the minors and then with the Marlins for three years, he was cut loose and the Giants quickly picked him up. Garcia was called in Sunday to pitch out of a bases loaded jam and he did just that. He then retired five hitters in a row to keep the Giants in front.
Meanwhile, Leone who had not looked good earlier in the series finished off the ninth by striking out two Marlins and getting the final out on a pop up.
This pair are part of a deep crew that Kapler likes to use. He can go with lefty Jake McGee, sidewinder Tyler Rogers, or young fireballing closer Octovio Detol in the late innings, and he also has reliable middle inning specialists John Brebbia, Jose Alvarez and Zach Littell . All of these fellows will chew up innings.
The bullpen gives the starters plenty of help but hopefully Kapler won’t have to rely on them too heavily. That’s because the Giants have one of the best rotations in the game, with Logan Webb and Carlos Rodon making up a dynamic 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. Although he didn’t get a victory in the wild opening day win last Friday, Webb showed flashes of his 2021 form. Rodon also didn’t get a decision in a 2-1 loss Saturday to Miami but he struck out 12 Marlins in just five innings of work.
2.) The Giants desperately need more offense. Right now they are hanging on until regulars Evan Longoria, LaMonte ‘Late Night’ Wade Jr, and Tommy LaStella return from the DL.
Even if you have a top notch starting rotation and a deep, talented bullpen, you can’t expect to score just over three runs a game and expect to put up more wins than losses. The Giants scored just ten runs in the three games with Miami. That’s not good enough. But for the time being, they’re going have to scratch out whatever they can get until the aforementioned three veterans return.
Meanwhile Darin Ruf, Mike Yaztrzemski and Austin Slater, along with cornerstone players Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt need to carry more of the load. But to expect more stellar play from the only two remaining players of the Giants glory days may be asking too much. Both Crawford and Belt are in their mid-30s and while both are coming off career years, it will be a challenge duplicating their 2021 seasons. Ballplayers also tend to run down in their mid-30s and Gabe Kapler will have to be very cautious, giving them much needed days off when necessary.

3.) The Giants have an excellent crop of young players who will need to contribute. The two highly touted rookies; outfielder Heliot Ramos and catcher Joey Bart looked excellent in the first series of the season.
Bart homered in his first at bat on opening day in a wild 6-5 win.. Two days later it was Ramos’ turn to shine as he singled in his first two big league at bats and scored the game’s first run. Ramos and Bart were number one draft picks in 2017 and 2018 so baseball insiders have been chirping about their potential for the last couple of years.
Both players are young, (22 and 25), so they’ll have plenty of energy. Bart seems to have a pretty good arm, the pitching staff raved about him in spring training, and he’s got some pop. Ramos meanwhile, is one of those multi-talented guys who can hit, hit for power, run, field and throw. Even though he weighs over 230 pounds, Ramos can streak around the bases quickly as he did Sunday when he scored the game’s first run Sunday on a double by young utility man Mauricio Dubon. Dubon is another youngster who could also enjoy a breakout season.
Add to this pair the versatile Thairo Estrada, ace Logan Webb, and the Giants are infused with some bright young stars for hopefully years to come..
After a pair of one-run wins over the Marlins this past weekend, the schedule gets much tougher with the revitalized Padres and their new manager Bob Melvin coming to town, then the Giants hit the road for an 11 game, four city trip starting Friday night in Cleveland.

Lawrence Fan
Celebration of Life
San Jose State Spartans

Hundreds gather at CEFCU Stadium to celebrate the life of Lawrence Fan
SAN JOSE—Emotions ranged from choking up to laughter as longtime San Jose State football media relations director Lawrence Fan was eulogized and remembered by family members and colleagues.
On a sunny, mild Saturday morning with light winds at CEFCU Stadium, speakers paid tribute to Fan, particularly focusing on his generosity, deep knowledge, and kindness towards others. Hosted by San Jose State radio announcer Justin Allegri, this celebration of Fan’s life had hundreds in attendance, mostly student-athletes past and present. The event was also streamed on Twitter, with over a thousand views.
From 1980 to 2021, Fan coordinated media coverage at 501 consecutive San Jose State home football games. In 2012, he was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame. On February 21, he passed away at age 67.
A wide range of speakers took the stage, starting with brief remarks from two top executives at San Jose State University, interim president Steve Perez and athletics director Jeff Konya.
Then, Fan’s brother Dr. Stephen Fan and sister Lillian Chou shared their personal memories growing up with Lawrence.
Stephen, a dentist practicing in Fremont, remembered Lawrence had a passionate interest in sports from childhood.
“He had a fondness for all sports and sports entertainment, so we would devote every Saturday to watch ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and he would emulate their announcers such as Howard Cosell and Jim McKay,” recalled Stephen.
Lillian remembered that Lawrence helped support her college education at San Jose State and was a loving uncle to her children.
“Lawrence always made time to come support my three children’s activities, whether it was a piano recital, church children’s musical, baseball game, gymnastics meet, or his favorite, graduations,” said Lillian.
Head football coach Brent Brennan said that Fan embodied the best aspects of college athletics. “He exemplified loyalty, hard work, how to respect others, and totally investing in people,” said Brennan.
After winning the 2020 Mountain West championship, San Jose State qualified for the Arizona Bowl, only to have over 25 players and three coaches out due to COVID-19.
San Jose State lost the bowl game 34-7. Brennan recalled being alone in a stadium tunnel with Fan and crying intensely after Fan asked him if he was ready for the postgame news conference.
“He put his hand on my shoulder and let me cry for a minute, and then he put his other hand on my shoulder . . . I kept crying, and then finally . . . he went in for the full hug,” said Brennan.
Other speakers included ESPN basketball reporter Marc J. Spears, CoSIDA executive director Doug Vance, former athletics director Tom Bowen, associate media relations director Amy Villa, and sociologist Harry Edwards, a former basketball and track athlete at San Jose State.
Even two figures known for their lively personalities at football games, in-game host Sierra Painter and cheerleader “Krazy” George Henderson, delivered serious yet compelling eulogies.
“This man was in here so much, he knew the carpet cleaning schedule!” said Painter, sharing one of many examples that day of Fan’s long work hours.
Krazy George credited Fan’s aggressive advocacy for getting him into the San Jose State athletics Hall of Fame.
“The man . . . [had] actually more joy out of it than I got out of it when I was inducted,” said Krazy George.
Allegri announced other ways San Jose State is officially remembering Fan. The university introduced a media relations internship in Fan’s name, and Fan will be the sole inductee this year in the athletics Hall of Fame.

San José State Names April Phillips as Head Women's Basketball Coach
|
|
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Director of Athletics Jeff Konya has selected April Phillips to lead the San José State women's basketball program, announced on Wednesday. Phillips spent the last season as an assistant coach at the University of Texas where the Longhorns won the Big 12 tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
"I want to thank TurnkeyZRG and Katy Young Staudt for their expertise as we mutually identified some high-quality candidates during this national search," said Konya. "April has extensive experience in recruiting as evidenced in signing top classes at Texas, Cal and Arizona. This is an incredible coaching opportunity and April is the right fit for our culture. Her positive energetic persona will lead the Spartans to new heights."
In addition to helping lead Texas to the program's first Big 12 tournament title in 19 seasons, Phillips helped Texas ink the No. 7 recruiting class in the country. While at Cal, she helped sign the sixth-best recruiting class and was part of upset wins over then-No. 13 Arizona, No. 20 Arkansas and No. 22 Arizona State in 2019-20. While at Arizona, she helped guide the Wildcats to the biggest turnaround in program history, 12 more wins than the previous year, and the 2019 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) championship. Phillips has helped develop 21 all-conference team selections, as well as three conference Freshman/Newcomer of the Year players.
"I am thankful to Jeff Konya, TurnkeyZRG and SJSU Administration for their confidence in me leading this program," said Phillips. "I also want to thank Vic Schaefer, Charmin Smith, Adia Barnes, Charity Elliott, Ty Grace and Anne Donovan for their leadership and guidance in preparing me to be a head coach. I am ready to start evaluating and bringing in top recruits to San José State. I am excited about developing young women and competing in the Mountain West."

Autograph Success --
George Foreman!
|
|
My dad and I were in the TWA lounge at JFK waiting for our flight to Milan as we were on a business trip when George Foreman entered the lounge.
I got a pen from my dad and went over to George and told him that I was a big fan of his and would he give me his autograph. George smiled and said "Of course."
We proceeded to talk for about 20 minutes, mainly about his comeback and upcoming fight with the "Great White Hope," Gerry Cooney. I mentioned that Cooney was a converted southpaw and tipped off one of his favorite punches by lowering his left shoulder and left hand when he wanted to throw an uppercut to the right side of the body. I even suggested that when he did this that all George needed to do was to beat him to the punch and go over the top with a right to Cooney's face.
George treated me like I gave him the next best thing since sliced bread. You can't believe how appreciative he was, even though he probably got this advice from everyone who knew him. As I was thanking George for taking the time to talk with me and giving me his autograph, who should walk into the lounge, but Smokin Joe Frazier.
Seeing him come in George suggested I get Joe's autograph, too. I again thanked George and went over to Frazier and asked him for his autograph. Joe's reaction was so totally different from George's in that he asked me for $25 for his signature.
I responded by saying "You see that man over there? He didn't ask me for any money and he gave me his autograph." Joe looked across the room and there was big George with the widest grin and nodding to Frazier to give me an autograph. Reluctantly, Joe did, but I'm sure he was influenced by George. How different these two boxers were both in personality and boxing style and a day I will always remember.

“I’ve been going to Laguna Seca for 30-plus years for a multitude of events, so when I opened up my own shop, Laguna Seca was one of the first places I wanted to partner with,” Emery said of his business joining forces with the iconic race track.
The company’s website, www.theracerssafetysource.com, is a one-stop shop for all safety needs for any driver. The site offers helmets, gloves, boots, harnesses, suits, HANS devices and more. Emery is a hands-on owner who tests his equipment on the track to ensure comfort for every driver.
“I want to make sure people are in the best gear they can be in, so that they can enjoy motorsports for as long as possible,” Emery said. “I work with the customers to provide budget-friendly options that work for them. But we always want to put someone in the best gear they can afford. If you’re going bungee jumping, are you going to strap your feet to a $200 bungee cord, or a $5,000 bungee cord?”
John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, is pleased to welcome Emery and his company.
“Chris has been a friend of Laguna Seca for many years – back to his days as a fan in the stands – and we are happy to partner with him to provide the best safety equipment available for every driver who competes at our track,” Narigi said. “Safety is always paramount in everything we do.”
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s 2022 season begins with the Trans Am Speedfest (April 22-24), followed by the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, featuring the Hyundai Monterey Sports Car Championship presented by Motul (April 29 – May 1). Tickets are available by calling 831.242.8200.

New York Gothams
The franchise came to be in 1883 under the helm of John Clapp. Their first season saw them finish 46-50, in sixth place out of eight teams in the National League. The team was led by catcher Buck Ewing and pitcher Mickey Welch.
The Gothams would win 62 games in 1884, then with the name change to Giants, they went 85-27 in 1885 under
manager Jim Mutrie.
Ya gotta wonder, would a game between the San Francisco Gothams and the Los Angeles Robins be as intriguing as a game between the Giants and Dodgers? https://bit.ly/36tibac is a history of the first Gotham season.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
