A Look Inside This Week's Whims

September 2023, 4th Edition

Hello, all!

We officially have two full weeks of school under our belts and everyone is settling into the Riley groove like real back to school pros. This year we're taking a few minutes every morning to come together for a stretch and moment of school-wide togetherness and it has been such a gift to see the children from the littlest in Wade Acres all the way up to our oldest Upper Schoolers engaging in this wonderfully grounding practice. These small but thoughtful acts can have such profound and lasting impacts on the children's days.

This week we have a free eye screening happening on campus on Tuesday, a deadline for the monthly order with Scholastic Books on Wednesday, and another Fireside Talk on Thursday - this one relating to Upper School Humanities, Math, & Science. While this week's Fireside Talk relates to the Upper School programming, it is open to ALL Riley families who wish to learn more about our generalappraoch as well as the Upper School at Riley. ALL parents are encouraged to attend all of these events and engage in the informative discussions that take place. We hope to see you there!

Wishing you all a lovely evening on this final Sunday in September!

Riley Fireside Talk: Upper School Humanities,

Science, & Math

Thursday September 28th, 4-5 pm

This past week we enjoyed our first Fireside Talk and we're thrilled to consider it a success full of lively discussion and shared ideas among facilitators and parents. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore how the Arts at Riley provide foundational support to the essential attitudes, values and skills development for our individual children.

We hope more families will join us for the next Fireside Talk on Thursday where the focus will be on the Upper School Humanities and Science program!

All evenings are open to all families and we encourage you to join us as we continue to discuss the Riley learning environment through the lense of traditional vs progressive education.

The Importance of Child Led Play

The below article is one that faculty were asked to read and discuss this month, and that we hope parents will read as well. This article supports the definition of play as an essential approach to engaging children with one another and with learning in a way that invites the development of intrinsic motivation, of self regulation, of awareness of the needs of others and of community, of problem solving and the importance of choice. Class time is not just “work” and recess is not just "play".

Play is an attitude and a skill that brings joy to our daily work together. The skilled educator, whether it be in the classroom or on the playing field, observes and works to find the balance between allowing children to work out what they need and providing the essential skills and guidance at the right time.

We hope parents will read the articles we share in WHIMS- we'd love to discuss them with you at our next Parent Coffee on Thursday October 19th!

Click below to access the article or come by the office for a copy.

Why Adult-Directed Sports Are No Substitute for Kid-Directed Play

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
