A Look Inside This Week's Whims
March 2023, 2nd Edition
Greetings, all,
Hope this weekly WHIMS finds you well and with minimal disruption from the time change. Daylight savings can be difficult on families so be easy on yourself this week as everyone adjusts. As children adapt their inner rhythms to DST, it's a great time to play hard in the afternoon and early evenings to meet those hour earlier bedtimes with more ease!
Thank you all so much for coming out to revel in all the hard work the children put into their special interests these past two weeks. We hope you walked away inspired and with a few fun new factoids to carry around!
March is full of fun events and you won't want to miss out! Next Thursday morning is a Parent Coffee, Friday is the Spring Equinox Dance, the following week we'll be enjoying an Art Night for moms on campus and Maine Maple Sunday, and at the tail end of the month our first ever Riley Parent Community Book Club! A vibrant community life is a huge part of the Riley ethos and we can't wait to share in that community with you.
May we all enjoy tonight's later sunset and have smooth bedtimes to boot!

Don't forget to sign up for skiing this Friday!
March 17th
And so March comes with each day on the mountain potentially the last for the season.. Take advantage of it while you still can and sign up for skiing this Friday!

The Spring Equinox Dance is scheduled on the earlier side so that our littlest friends can attend. Because of that we'll be gathering at dinnertime and we want to make sure everyone is well fed. Please sign up to bring something tasty to the potluck- suggestions included on the sign up sheet!
At the link below you'll find volunteer spots for easy to throw together things like chips and salsa or fruit, cheese, and cold cut plates, requests for crowd pleasing pasta bakes and roasted veggies, and even an option to contribute money towards some Flatbread pizzas. Hopefully something for everyone, and feel free to sign up for multiple items if you feel so inclined!

Riley Community Cookbook
As most of you are aware, this year marks the 50th anniversary of our dear little school and everyone has been hard at work thinking of ways to mark this milestone. With the help of my Reflection group and their associated adults and my friends at Wade Acres we are going to undertake a potentially amazing project that will last for the next 50+ years and has not yet been done: a Riley Community Cookbook!
Each family will be asked to provide one recipe per child for the book that the Riley children will transcribe and meaningfully illustrate, from our smallest citizens all the way up to leadership. This will result in a book that will be available for purchase and should arrive in time for the end of the school year.
The recipes can be anything! Old family favorites (bonus for any recipes from 1972), quick weeknight standbys, best lunch box, potluck classics- you name it! Ideally, it will be one that your child could also share their feelings about in a little blurb on their page but does not need to be that.
We will need recipe submissions by March 28th to ensure enough time for the children to complete the page work in time for the publication deadline. Please feel free to reach out to me (michelle.buczacz@rileyschool.org) with any questions you may have and thank you for making our community just that little bit brighter by being here!
Warmest regards,
Michelle Buczacz

Guarding Our Collective Health
The resurgence is here and to protect the overall health of our community we are really needing to maintain vigilance. Please MASK if there is any question of exposure or any symptoms. Hopefully by taking a few extra precautions we can put up a bit of a barrier against all the nasty bugs going around.
Please monitor your children for symptoms, and prioritize rest and recuperation over attendance whenever appropriate. Please prepare your children for mask wearing should they present symptoms while at school. And don't forget: children must be fever free for 24 hours before they can return to school. Thank you for working with us to keep the Riley community well!
| Project Act is another great resource for free covid tests. New test kits can be requested monthly (while supplies last) and come with 5 tests each. Thank you to Josh Brandoff for sharing this great resource! |

Become a steward of your watershed! Whether you are an experienced naturalist or are curious about what’s going on in your watershed, join Herring Gut and Georges River Land Trust in conducting community science surveys to test the quality of our waters. From salty coastal waters to fresh inland waters of the St. George River, you will identify and catalog both marine and freshwater invertebrates living in the St. George River Watershed as well as other water quality parameters. Each site will have other conservation focuses such as invasive species monitoring, bird observations, and rockweed surveys. Data collected in this community science project will be analyzed and used for future monitoring and management of our natural resources.
Ages: Open to scientists and their families ages 10 and up!
Each trail is about a half mile. While most trails are flat, participants should be prepared for uneven terrain to access the water. When seasonally appropriate, boots may be needed. More details will be sent 1-2 weeks prior to each event!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT
The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.
Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.
We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.
At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
