A Look Inside This Week's Whims

November 2022, 3rd Edition

Hello, Riley family! The week ahead will be short and sweet, and in keeping with the theme so, too, will be this week's Whims!

Important Reminders for ALL Families

-The first and most pressing information to remind you of is the call for each child to bring 2 potatoes, a squash, and a stick of butter to school by tomorrow. Tuesday is the campus wide Cooking for Community Thanksgiving event and we need all of these delicious ingredients to turn out mashed veg and tasty pies!

-Our annual appeal for The 50k Riley Children's Fund has set the goal of full participation from all Riley families- no gift is too small and all are needed! Please consider donating.

-Children are NOT to have cell phones on campus. They are unfortunately an irresistible distraction. Please be assured that we will call home anytime it's needed, whether for emergencies or simply because your child needs you. If you need to contact your child please call the office or text the admin line at any time. A speaker at this weekend's conference that our wonderful facilitators attended encouraged families to read iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy- and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood by Jean M. Twenge, PhD.

-Please send your children with ample warm, labeled clothing for the chilly days ahead!

In the main column of this week's Whims you'll find:

An excerpt from a recent email from Becky and The Board, and a request for all families to take an important survey..

event, Kyle's science class, and the fall play!

Here's to a wonderful November!

An Excerpt from a Recent Email from Becky & The Board..

In our last message to you we mentioned that the board has started the process of updating our strategic plan. As part of this process we’ll be looking to you to help inform and craft the future ofthe school. That engagement begins with a series of surveys in which you will have the opportunity to provide your opinion on Riley School specific topics. Today’s survey is the first ofthree, planned surveys that we’re asking you to complete. The surveys will include topics regarding all aspects of the Riley experience and your feedback will be a critical input to our assessment of the school's strengths and opportunities.

We strongly urge you to click HERE and complete the survey by November 30th.

The survey is anonymous, and is expected to take less than five minutes to complete. It’s critical that all parents respond to ensure that our data is accurate, and includes the perspective of all stakeholders.

Tis the Season for Giving

And Riley needs your help!

All School Cooking

for Community Meals Requests

The entire Riley School is again spending the Tuesday before Thanksgiving preparing donations for the St Peters Community Feast in Rockland.

We will be making 20 pounds each of potato and squash, while also baking 14 pies.

Becky will be taking Michelle's group to cook at the St Johns Episcopal in Thomaston where they will be joined by members of the parish.

How you can help...

Please send your child in with a squash, 2 potatoes, and 1 stick of butter by Monday November 21st.

If you have connections with a large kitchen, a fail-proof pie crust skill, or would like to join us in this community service, please contact Becky.

Science Class Requests

from Kyle Amergian

Kyle’s Science classes have been exploring renewable energy. They are beginning a study of solar power and planning to build their own vehicles. Please send in useful tinkering / building materials ex: wheels, rolls, dowels, bits of solid flat cardboard , hot glue sticks, etc.

Fall Play Requests from Michelle

We have 27 togas needed for the middle school play alone so this is a call for bedsheets! Any and all bedsheets; any color or pattern aside from ones with cartoon characters would be immensely helpful as well as any old Barbie dolls that may or may not be returned in their original condition.

Also, each middle school child will need an unpatterned set of base layer to wear under their togas. They will not be altered in any way.

The last item I'd like to put out a call for in this message is wigs and fake beards.Quite a few of those are needed as well and they do not need to look good, they are being used in a comedic way so being disheveled is not a bad thing.

The Riley Children's Fund

Annual Goal: $50,000

Raised to Date: $14,000

By now everyone should have received a letter from Riley asking for support of our Riley Children's Fund. Our goal in our 50th year is $50k with full participation from all of our Riley families.

Every child, whether full pay or discounted, is supported by this fund as our tuition cost before aid is still $1200 less than what it actually costs for a child to attend Riley. Every gift makes a significant difference and sends a message of support to our faculty, to our Board, and to additional outside funders. These annually requested donations are essential dollars that help bridge the gap between what Riley charges and what Riley costs.

We have kept our tuition levels lower than the actual cost per child in recent years to ensure that we are not setting a bar that would discourage well matched families from applying. We strive to meet families' needbased tuition assistance requests and are dedicated to building a strong community that does not exclude anyone based on finances.

Please know that we stretch every penny. Every day each of us gives as much as we can, and a little more, to each of your children. We ask that you consider a gift that represents a similar stretch, but that is appropriate and comfortable for your family.

We ask each of you to consider ways you can bridge that- a tax deductible donation, a contribution of essential skills, or leadership in a fundraising event.

Thank you!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
