A Look Inside This Week's Whims

November 2022, 1st Edition

Welcome, November! These first few days of the month have seen the sugar haze of late October begin to recede while our clocks fell back in time. In a day or two the weather will return to the regularly scheduled programming of cool days and frosty nights, and we'll find ourselves falling headlong into late fall and early winter. It's a wonderful time of year to get outside and enjoy all that beautiful Maine has to offer.

PLEASE BE SURE TO SEND YOUR CHILD WITH ORANGE BLAZE!

We've got a jam packed November ahead of us so check the updated school calendar, read your emails, and ready yourself for a good time! From disco parties to parent coffees, contra dances to community cooking - November has so much in store for the Riley community. Can't wait to experience it all together!

Theater Requests for the Fall Play

Hello Riley School community!

Play season is upon us and we are looking for items for props and costumes. We have 27 togas needed for the middle school play alone so this is a call for bedsheets! Any and all bedsheets; any color or pattern aside from ones with cartoon characters would be immensely helpful as well as any old Barbie dolls that may or may not be returned in their original condition.

Also, each middle school child will need an unpatterned set of base layers to wear under their togas. They will not be altered in any way.

More specific needs will go out when the show is eminent but to get started, we really need sheets. The last item I'd like to put out a call for in this message is wigs and fake beards. Quite a few of those are needed as well and they do not need to look good, they are being used in a comedic way so being disheveled is not a bad thing. As always, thank you for all you do and if you are interested in helping out with the creation of props and costumes, let me know.

Thank you!

Michelle

Bike Trail Maintenance and Improvements Underway

John Anders from SideCountry Sports, has begun work extending the multi-purpose woods trail that is specialized for young mountain bikers. This section is over ground that is less well drained and contains more boulders than the first 1100 feet.Completing the trail will require a few days and may, once the machinery is safely out of the way, require volunteer assistance, be prepared to tamp down the new substrate and surface.

Thank Yous to Our Wonderful Community!

First an annoucement, then some thank yous..

Theater upgrades are in progress!

The Riley Theater is on the way to providing audiovisual facilities for the school and for the community. This is a long anticipated and welcome step, and a fitting tribute to long-time Riley Board member, Charlie Chamberlain, in whose memory funds were collected.

The system has already been put to screen a movie for exhausted post halloween children. It includes speakers that can be moved outdoors for special performances.

THANK YOU

Our thanks to Dan and Sarah Merlo who have designed and installed the screen and projector in the theater and to Board member Tony Oppersdorff has taken the lead in making this happen.

Thank you to Muriel Curtis for a wonderful Friday Activity spent rowing with Station Maine!

Thank you to those who have made donations from the wish list ( and other ways!)

William Kinnane & John Petersen, Jamien and Jeremy Reynolds, and Mary Nelson!

And thanks for all the extra help with projects and maintenance we are getting from Craig Letowski, Nate Buczacz & James Whitehouse!

A Bees Wrap Discount for

Lunches with Less Plastic!

As we work to reduce food waste and single use plastics on campus, we're thrilled to share a discount code for Riley families from the incredible Vermont owned and woman owned company, Bees Wrap!

Use RILEY15 at checkout to receive 15% off your order with Bee's Wrap.

From Bee's Wrap..

Bee’s Wrap started with a simple idea: make it easy to cut down on plastic and store food sustainably. So, founder Sarah Kaeck turned to bees, nature’s most productive and protective foodies, for inspiration.

Infusing organic cotton with a blend of beeswax, plant oil and tree resin, she created a durable yet pliable beeswax food wrap that could be used again and again – helping people be like bees and do their part for the greater good of the planet.

From storing food in the kitchen, to packing sandwiches and snacks on the go, Bee’s Wrap is a small sustainable swap that adds up to make a big impact. Together, we can bee the change.

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
