A Look Inside This Week's Whims

May 2023, 2nd Edition

Happy Mother's Day and a wonderful Sunday wished to all, Riley community!

The week ahead will be one for the record books! All week long we'll be celebrating Spirit Week and Kite Week in tandem, preparing for Saturday's much anticipated 50th Anniversary celebration, welcoming Kim Bernard and her recycling machines to campus for an exciting art project, and tackling the mother of all to-do lists! There's much to accomplish and remember so we've included a check list of sorts below. Familiarize yourself with the calendar, upcoming to-dos and their deadlines, and enjoy the hurry scurry spring energy that comes with the final weeks of school.

  • Register your child for their Hurricane Island Field Trip. Registration was due Friday May 12th so please register today if you haven't!
  • Order your child's yearbook by Tuesday May 16th.
  • Brainstorm spirit week costumes with your child.
  • Share widely and bid generously on The Riley School Auction.
  • RSVP to the 50th Anniversary Celebration.
  • Return your contracts for next year.
  • Submit your deposit for next year by June 1st.
  • Reserve the evening of June 2nd to enjoy the spring plays.
  • Visit the Farnsworth to see the Pottery Exhibit.
  • Donate egg cartons.
  • Pack a waterproof bag in child's backpack.

All the details for the above list are in the email below so pour yourself a cup of tea, get acquainted with all that's on the horizon, and start crossing what you can off the list! Thank you so much for working with us to make the end of the school year a spectacular one. Can't wait to see you bright and early tomorrow morning on Medieval Monday!

If you have not yet RSVP'd please do so below. Letting us know you'll be there allows us to communicate to vendors the crowd size they'll be serving.

Additionally, if you plan to camp out overnight please indicate your interest on the registration questionnaire. Children need an accompanying adult, and to keep everyone safe we're asking that each adult camping be responsible for no more than 2 children.

RSVP today for the 50th Anniversary Celebration!

Spirit Week 2023

Get in on the fun May 15th-19th!

Spirit week begins tomorrow so check out the schedule below and encourage your children's creativity! No need to rush out buy things though. Spirit week is a great opportunity to practice resourceful thinking and costuming! Here is the line up:

Medieval Monday (no weapons) Princesses and princes, kings and queens, jesters, warriors…

Time Travel Tuesday Little you, future you, someone from the 70s or 1920s or 1800s or 2300. It's up to you!

Wacky Wednesday The whackier the better! Mix things up!

PJs Thursday You know, wear PJs! Or whatever you sleep in..

Fandom Friday Dress like your favorite book character or author, scientist, musician, facilitator, sports person, president-someone of whom you are a FAN!!

Kite Week 2023

May 15th-19th

Kite week is a long standing Riley tradition that the children look forward to every year and it's finally here! For a week children are given opportunities to explore the ins and outs of kites and the wind that sends them flying.. And then.. if/when the wind is just right.. we have a KITE DAY!

Keep an eye out for a special flag or wind catching item in driveway to indicate “This is KITE DAY!” Families are welcome to join us on that day. Please, please let’s keep this simple as children will make a kite at school and we would prefer that you not run out and buy a new kite. The children have a lot of fun making their own, testing each iteration, and repairing them. This approach also removes the pressure and anxiety of trying to avoid damaging their special kite.

While throughout the week children will be exploring handmade kite designs, they are welcome to bring a kite from home on Monday to have one ready to go all week. But only if you have one and aren't worried about damage! The free-spirited and welcome exuberance of Riley’s Kite Day may not be the best place for it to stay safe outside of adult hands and the facilitators allow the children to experience all of the joys of kite flying, including the crashing. We will have several on hand during the week to catch that perfect breeze at any time!

How you can help: we'll happily add any newspaper you've got laying around to our Kite Lab!

Hurricane Island Trips

May 22nd & 23rd

Earlier this week you should have received an email regarding your child's Hurricane Island Field Trip. More information will follow, but currently the top priority is for all children to be registered for this amazing field trip. If your child is not registered- they will not be able to attend this field trip. No exceptions.

Registration takes around 10 minutes so please plan appropriately. Registrations were due Friday May 12th so if your child is currently still unregistered, please make time this evening if possible. The email you received contains detailed registration information so please refer back there with registration questions. Thank you for helping us make this wonderful opportunity come to life for your children!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
