A Look Inside This Week's Whims

May 2023, 3rd Edition

Hi, all,

Whew! What a week. Spirit Week, Kite Week, the 50th Anniversary party, and more filled out this beautiful week in May to the absolute fullest. Hopefully you've had a chance to catch your breath this weekend! The week ahead should be a tad quieter, though there are still some items to check off the to do list if you haven't gotten to them yet.

  • Prepare for Hurricane Island field trips
  • Return your contracts for next year.
  • Submit your deposit for next year by June 1st.
  • Reserve the evening of June 2nd to enjoy the spring plays.
  • Visit the Farnsworth to see the Pottery Exhibit.
  • Donate egg cartons.
  • Pack a waterproof bag in child's backpack.

The most important reminder is that of the Hurricane Island field trips happening Monday and Tuesday of this week. Children attending should NOT be dropped off at Riley. For drop off/pick up locations and times, and a detailed packing list, please refer to the email you received regarding your child's specific field trip.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you in the morning!

Hurricane Island Trips

May 22nd & 23rd

It's time to head to Hurricane Island! By now you have received a detailed email regarding your child's HI trip containing drop off/pick up locations and times, and a detailed packing list. Monday and Tuesday's groups have slightly different morning travel plans so please be sure to look over your email carefully and drop your child off with all they need to make this year's trip to Hurricane Island a success!

Monday's Group, 5/22

Meet at Rockland Ferry Terminal by 8 am

Tuesday's Group, 5/23

Meet at Journey's End Marina by 8 am

The Jellyfish Takes a Journey

June 2nd, 5 pm

Hello!

As you may know, your child is going to be in their second play of the school year on June 2nd. The name of the play is The Jellyfish Takes a Journey. It is a Japanese myth that explains how the jellyfish became the gelatinous creature we know it as today.

I'm writing to ask that, if you are willing and/or able to send in clothing that your child or others could use as costumes, that would be wonderfully helpful. For this play, the children all need to wear shorts and t-shirts or tank tops under their costumes. We are still looking for another 1 or 2 kimonos or kimono-like garments as well. Please send items in no later than the start of this week, that will illuminate the gaps that will need to be shopped for leaving plenty of time to acquire missing items. As always, thank you for your help, support and all you do.

Warmly, Michelle

Celebrating 50 Years of Riley

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to celebrate half a century of our wonderful school! What a lovely evening of art, music, food and community. Though the weather dampened our plans a bit we still had a nice turnout with many memories made! Saturday was also the culmination of your spring auction, which was a fantastic success thanks to so many of you. Both events exceeded our goals, and we are thrilled and grateful!

Thank you to Caroline Saxe-Cobaugh for all the hard work on the spring auction, and thank you to John Petersen for putting together the incredible Porch Party celebration! You were both integral parts of this weekend's success and we're so grateful to have you in the Riley community.

This was truly a group effort so a huge thank you to all faculty, auction contributors, and community members who donated, bid, and more! Your support is so deeply appreciated!

Riley's Got Spirit!

This year's spirit week was a runaway success. Every day children and facilitators alike looked forward to seeing how their peers creatively executed the day's theme. The children-chosen themes were a delight to play with and we already can't wait until next year!

This is YOUR Whims!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
