A Look Inside This Week's Whims
March 2023, 3rd Edition
Hello, Riley community!
What a week it's been. Not only were we all adjusting to Daylight Savings Time, it would seem that all the germs found our little school by the sea this week. We were so sorry to cancel the dance but look forward to rescheduling in April when our overall health as a community is better. May we all be on the mend and with returned vigor in the days ahead-
Maine Maple Sunday is this coming weekend ! We are so excited to share in this highly anticipated annual event with you and the larger community. Please invite your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and beyond to share in this special day celebrating the seasonal work of sugaring and the beautiful campus and community of Riley.
This week's WHIMS is full of a wide array of invitations and requests so take a minute to look things over. We've got a Women's Art Night tomorrow night, the Scholastic Book Fair, Maine Maple Sunday and Riley's first ever Parent Book Club upcoming! We are also soliciting ideas and donations for Riley's Spring Auction, and requesting family recipes for Riley's first ever cookbook (one from each student, please!).
Be well and stay informed, and see you at Maine Maple Sunday!

Guarding Our Collective Health
This last week was a doozy for our community health wise and we look forward to seeing everyone with restored health in the days ahead. Please monitor your children for symptoms, and prioritize rest and recuperation over attendance whenever appropriate. Please prepare your children for mask wearing should they present symptoms while at school. And don't forget: children must be fever free for 24 hours before they can return to school.
Thank you for working with us to keep the Riley community well!
| Project Act is another great resource for free covid tests. New test kits can be requested monthly (while supplies last) and come with 5 tests each. Thank you to Josh Brandoff for sharing this great resource! | |
Maine Maple Sunday
Sunday March 26th, 10-2
Join us in celebrating the changes of the seasons on Maine Maple Sunday!
During your visit you can take a guided walk through the woods where you'll learn how to identify maple trees and how seemingly simple tree sap is turned into golden sweet maple syrup.
Stop by and check out our Book Fair with special guests: newly hatched baby chicks! Enjoy live music featuring steel band performances and sea shanties, and get your creative juices flowing with some maple inspired printmaking and art. We will have maple cotton candy, maple pancakes (gluten free option available!), maple hot dogs, maple s'mores kits, and fresh popcorn by donation.
Maine Maple Sunday at The Riley School is a beloved annual event and a great opportunity to share our wonderful school with the wider community. Come hungry, bring friends, and leave happy!

Riley Community Cookbook
As most of you are aware, this year marks the 50th anniversary of our dear little school and everyone has been hard at work thinking of ways to mark this milestone. With the help of my Reflection group and their associated adults and my friends at Wade Acres we are going to undertake a potentially amazing project that will last for the next 50+ years and has not yet been done: a Riley Community Cookbook!
Each family will be asked to provide one recipe per child for the book that the Riley children will transcribe and meaningfully illustrate, from our smallest citizens all the way up to leadership. This will result in a book that will be available for purchase and should arrive in time for the end of the school year.
The recipes can be anything! Old family favorites (bonus for any recipes from 1972), quick weeknight standbys, best lunch box, potluck classics- you name it! Ideally, it will be one that your child could also share their feelings about in a little blurb on their page but does not need to be that.
We will need recipe submissions by March 28th to ensure enough time for the children to complete the page work in time for the publication deadline. Please feel free to reach out to me (michelle.buczacz@rileyschool.org) with any questions you may have and thank you for making our community just that little bit brighter by being here!
Warmest regards,
Michelle Buczacz

One Month Left to Donate to Riley's Spring Auction!
In celebration of Riley’s 50th year we will be holding an online spring auction with items donated by Riley community members and local businesses. Are you an artist, maker or craftsperson? Do you have a skill you could use or teach someone to do? We want the auction to be inclusive and community led! Contact Caroline Saxe-Cobaugh at caroline.saxe.cobaugh@gmail.com with questions, donations or if you want to volunteer.
The teachers have come through with many generous donations, including artwork, musical performances and more. Parents, now it’s our turn! Get creative, this is not your typical auction, and any ideas or contributions are encouraged and nothing is too small.

Become a steward of your watershed! Whether you are an experienced naturalist or are curious about what’s going on in your watershed, join Herring Gut and Georges River Land Trust in conducting community science surveys to test the quality of our waters. From salty coastal waters to fresh inland waters of the St. George River, you will identify and catalog both marine and freshwater invertebrates living in the St. George River Watershed as well as other water quality parameters. Each site will have other conservation focuses such as invasive species monitoring, bird observations, and rockweed surveys. Data collected in this community science project will be analyzed and used for future monitoring and management of our natural resources.
Ages: Open to scientists and their families ages 10 and up!
Each trail is about a half mile. While most trails are flat, participants should be prepared for uneven terrain to access the water. When seasonally appropriate, boots may be needed. More details will be sent 1-2 weeks prior to each event!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT
The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.
Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.
We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.
At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
