A Look Inside This Week's Whims

January 2023, 2nd Edition

With the first week of 2023 officially under our belts we're feeling inspired and invigorated for what lies ahead this winter. This week alone we're welcoming a new immersive Spanish language elective in partnership with the Penobscot Bay Language School, are honoring the life and leadership of Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. on campus Monday, and kicking off the 2023 Skiing & Snowboarding Club. Additionally fall's duck habitat has made its annual transition to winter skating pond, and we're so eager to welcome its reemergence with the children.

There are so many wonderful winter days to come!

And with that in mind, make sure to familiarize yourself with our winter weather policies (in the main column below). Inclement winter weather days are in this upcoming week's forecast with more to come on the horizon.

Stay warm, stay cozy, and stay informed, Riley community!

Service Day at Riley

Monday January 16th

Monday to mark Martin Luther King, Jr., Day we have planned a day of special programming that will both honor the life of and embody the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. We've queued up several films, a collaborative art project, an exercise in collective voice, and will be exploring with the children how we can be changemakers.

Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way. -MLK

Monday's weather looks awfully wintry! As always we encourage families to use their own discretion regarding attendance. Please read immediately below to familiarize yourself with our winter weather policies.

Please familiarize yourself with our winter weather school closure procedures below!

We follow RSU 13 for delays and weather cancellations. When possible info will be posted on FB and on WGME13. Sign up for automatic text messages from the WCSH6 Storm Center website.

In case of a power outage cancellation, call the school. If the answering machine picks up we do have power and thus school.

We do not do early dismissal but encourage families to make their own decisions re safety and to pick up at any time during the day. That said, there will be NO AFTERCARE on a day when local schools have an early dismissal.

As always, use your own discretion regarding road conditions in your area and choose safety over attendance. Please call in as early as possible if you choose not to bring your child in on inclement weather days so we do not worry about you.

Nueva clase de español en Riley!

We are so pleased to announce a new partnership with the Penobscot Language School.

Jared McCannell will be offering an immersive language experience for this next session of Electives. If there is adequate interest, we are looking at offering an on campus afterschool program.

And, as a very special celebration of this collaboration, The Penobscot School is offering:

FREE REGISTRATION FOR RILEY FAMILIES

It begins THIS THURSDAY

You need to act right away

Camden Winterfest 2023

Saturday, January 28, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Join the team to transform a crystal-clear block of ice into a sparkling sculpture!

Camden Winterfest 2023 will include, as usual, hot food, outdoor music, ice carving, the Polar Plunge, the Doggie Fashion Show, and a Kids Story Walk! They will also have kids crafts indoors this year.

Sign up for  ice carving hours  and being an ambassador for Riley. We also love volunteers who bring warming refreshments . This is a super fun day as well as a positive marketing opportunity for Riley. We invite other children to come wield a tool and never know exactly whether a prizewinning sculpture will emerge or not!

Contact Anna to get involved!

Skating Season at Riley

The ice is calling so pack your skates and helmets! Weather willing, we are all looking forward to a wonderful winter enjoying Riley's skating pond.

Helmets are required - no exceptions.

Aftercare Pottery with Leith

Pottery with Leith is a great opportunity to get focused studio time and to dive deeper into more complex projects, and it's not just for kids in Aftercare!

We have room available in our winter session so contact Leith for more information or Tam to register.

Apologies but this is not available to Wade Acres children.

Calling All Chainsaw Enthusiasts!

In the coming weeks we plan to bring in an arborist to fell some trees in need of removal in Riley's woods. Afterwards we'll need help turning this precious resource into firewood.

If you have chainsaw experience and can lend your time (or your saw!), please reach out to Craig Letowski. Date and time still to be determined.

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
