A Look Inside This Week's Whims

October 2023, 1st Edition

Happy October, Riley families!

The leaves are falling and every so often a faint whiff of woodsmoke floats by on the breeze.. it's safe to say fall has officially arrived in the midcoast! Time to pull out the cozy layers and woolen hats because tis the season for cool mornings and warm afternoons. A friendly reminder: please pack your children's bags with back up clothes, particularly socks, and label all of their belongings.

If you have not already, please order your household's FREE Covid tests to have on hand as we head into this year's cold and flu season. We've had multiple confirmed Covid cases from within our school community and we are asking that all families work to limit the spread of Covid and illness in general. This includes erring on the side of caution and keeping your children home when they are unwell, testing for Covid, communicating with the school regarding your child's health, and masking when returning to school (2 days for a regular bug, 5 days for Covid). Family healthcare is community healthcare; join us in caring for the health of our Riley community!

This Tuesday we're kicking off our monthly Women's Art Night series. We'll be exploring block printing on linen- hope to see you there! On Thursday our wonderful facilitators will be putting on another Fireside Talk. This week's topic is...Middle School! All families are encouraged to attend. Read below for more in-depth info on the above events and more!

See you in the morning!

Women's Art Night: Blockprinting

Tuesday October 3rd, 4:30 PM*

Join Anna in the art room on Tuesday for an evening of community and craft! Last year we tried Ukrainian egg dyeing and worked on the Riley 50th anniversary quilt, and this year is sure to hold so, so much more!

Tuesday we'll be carving block prints and printing on linen- all materials will be provided. Please bring a snack and/or drink to share with the group if you can, though it's certainly not required!

If you have an idea for a future Art Night, reach out to Anna!

*The Art room will "open" at 4:30 for Art Night but feel free to trickle in as your schedule allows.

Optional: BYOB & snacks to share!

Riley Fireside Talk:

Middle School

Thursday October 5th, 4-5 pm

This past week we enjoyed our second Fireside Talk and we're so grateful to all of you who showed up to engage with our facilitators and Riley programming.

We look forward to more families joining us for the next Fireside Talk on Thursday October 5th where the focus will be on the Middle School!

While each Fireside Talk has its own unique focus we welcome and encourage attendance to all families regardless of their child's age. We look forward to growing a deeper understanding of "The Riley Way" as we continue to discuss the Riley learning environment through the lens of traditional vs progressive education in upcoming Fireside Talks.

Childcare provided by Riley Facilitators!

Please let us know if you can come.

Big Field Day

Every Wednesday After School

Riley families are invited and encouraged to enjoy the BIG FIELDS on our gorgeous campus after school on Wednesdays.

Children can teach you their recess Big Games,  families can use the volley ball net or the soccer goals, play Ultimate Frisbee, or simply enjoy the fields together.

This will be an entirely parent supervised time for families as faculty will be in afternoon meeting. Children cannot be left without a designated, responsible adult.

We would love to identify a parent coordinator to field questions and ideas and communicate any special plans that may emerge. We have had one volunteer to help orchestrate Ultimate Frisbee!

If you are interested or able to participate or coordinate, please contact Lindsay, Parent Community Coordinator, at pcc@rileyschool.org

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
