Extended Summer Heat Will Result in High Water Bills

As we enter early fall, the weather appears more summerlike with temps in the 90's this weekend and no rain in sight. Good news for September barbeques but not good news for your operational budget as late summer water costs will be greater than normal and significantly greater than 2013. The weather graph below shows that we have had 50% greater irrigation need since August 1st compared to last year. This will get even worse as we go through the end of September as at this point last year we had several stretches of rain and  most irrigation was turned off by the 15th as the end of September had record setting rain. This year is appearing quite the opposite as there is still no rain in even the longest range forecasts. The current wind increases water loss and keeps the watering need as high as a mid-summer day.

Many of our customers have approved the conversion to Weather Based Irrigation controllers. These automatically adjust the irrigation based on the actual weather, not one's prediction. Weather Based Irrigation is watering more now than a normal September but that is because it is needed. The good news is that it will automatically reduce irrigation as soon as the heat subsides and/or we get rain. Our manually programmed irrigation controllers are also still programmed to water heavy due to the unseasonable heat and we will reduce those as the weather subsides too. This will take a little longer thus the water and money saving value of Weather Based Irrigation.

Enjoy the great fall weather but prepare for larger than normal water bills L
