 As Summer Fades,

So Will Summer Flowers

It is called seasonal color and its season is coming to an end. Hard to believe on these summer like days with the temperatures in the upper 80's and low 90's, but Fall is near and as the weather turns, the summer color will begin to fade. Most plantings will last into October but the peak is here and most will soon begin to fade.

Flowers are some of the most fun and gratifying segments of landscape maintenance. We get to play designer and work on new and creative designs, then plant and nurture while they get established. When they burst into maturity in July and August, we all can enjoy the planning and work that goes into the planting.

Although we do much testing and planning to produce outstanding displays, we do not always hit it perfect. The example is our Zinnias that struggled early this year and were slow to fill in and mature. We had to replant several plantings as some plants even failed. This is the first time we have had such trouble with Zinnias so it was a surprise. The same occurred a few years ago when Downey Mildew struck Impatiens. As we discover new problems, we adjust our program to avoid in the future. We won't be using Zinnias again until we find out what the problem was.

In addition, we also plant test beds at our office to try new combinations and varieties to see if they are worthy of use. Below is our current test bed at our Hillsboro Office. Some of these will make it into our rotation in the future, stay tuned.

We are also beginning to plan our fall change-out. Our grower, Tanasacres, is busy growing our pansies for planting beginning next month.   Stay tuned for more details of our winter pansy planting coming soon.
