Written from the rooftop garden at Vestas Corporation in Northwest Portland:

Most days I'm wearing business casual and at my desk, or out in the field meeting with one of my managers or a client.  Occasionally I put on jeans, boots, and an orange shirt and go out in the field with the crew. That is where I was part of yesterday and today. Oddly enough, I like the work but I do it mostly to keep perspective on what we're doing.

Recently we've expanded to maintain a number of green roofs and rooftop gardens in the Pearl and Downtown at South Waterfront. Our clients include Vestas, OHSU, Multnomah County, and PSU. This work is unique and technical and quite frankly not always easy to pull off. I have been working with our team directly to make sure that I understand the challenges and needs of each site so I can help our team put together long-term management plans. We've been maintaining green roofs for over five years but have expanded rapidly in the last couple of years with this service.  Many of the roofs that we take over have inherent problems and each is unique, requiring unique solutions to fulfill our customer's expectations.

We are also working in and around more buildings that have LEED certification. We have been talking with many customers about the restrictions and expectations for landscape services around LEED buildings. We have been doing research to make sure that we were properly maintaining and helping customers achieve their goal of LEED certification and maintaining it.

One of our corporate goals is to stay on the cutting edge of landscape services. Green Roofs, Bio-Swales, Rain Gardens and LEED certified buildings take special and more sophisticated service to maintain. I enjoy going out in the field to help understand these new services and work with our team as we develop and perfect that expertise that we provide to you, our customer.

I'm tired, but I have had a lot of fun the last few days. I look forward to continuing to work with our team in the field as we continue to develop as an organization. (Oh, by the way, I should have put on sunscreen L)
